The single most important figure in the history of 20th century entertainment. Simple as that.

You can argue all you like - often with justification - who was 'better', but anyone who thinks that rock'n'roll would have had anything like the cultural impact that it had with anyone else as it's figurehead simply isn't paying attention or is just ignorant. As John Lennon put it, "before Elvis there was nothing".

It should also never be underestimated how important he was (and still is) to the image of the US overseas. All of it positive. For many of us in other countries, to put it simply, when we were growing up, Elvis WAS America.

Over at Traders Den there is a tremendous cd of Elvis studio rehearsal outtakes running that is well worth the grab for any fan.

ELVIS PRESLEY - LET IT ROLL (Madison CWP 014)

LINEAGE: SILVER -> EAC -> FLAC

Excellent stereo sound, please check the sample.

Let It Roll is a Madison (2006) release and features unreleased '70s alternate takes & unedited studio material in excellent sound quality, pretty much in the same quality as Danny Boy and Funny How Time Slips Away on Elvis - A Legendary Performer volume 8 .

This CD will show the ever-present talent of Elvis in his later period, but also his good humor and dedication while working in studio. The packaging will include a 16 page, illustrated booklet and relevant notes.

This CD should please all the fans with some rare studio and live recordings. Hear Elvis rehearsing It's Midnight before going into the first take of this song, a brief studio jam of Johnny B. Goode and having fun afterwards, one of his last performances of the song Help Me recorded at the closing show of the April/May '77 tour in Saginaw,MI., Elvis and the Imperials get down to cutting a terrific version of Bosom Of Abraham and more.

The version of My Way on this is the original 1971 mix and is far superior to that found on the Essential '70s Masters box set. The ending is properly done.

All the tracks on this CD are in full stereo and superb quality.

01 - It's Midnight (rehearsal) December 10, 1973
02 - It's Midnight (take 1) December 10, 1973
03 - Bosom Of Abraham (alternate take) June 9, 1971
04 - I'm Leavin' (master take 8, unedited) May 20,1971
05 - Always On My Mind (take 2, unedited) March 29, 1972
06 - Always On My Mind (take 3, unedited) March 29, 1972
07 - Promised Land (take 5, unedited) December 15, 1973
08 - My Way (master take 1, original 1971 mix) June 10, 1971
09 - Johnny B. Goode / O Holy Night (jam) May 18, 1971
10 - Patch It Up (master take 8, unedited) June 8, 1970
11 - Help Me (live multi-track) May 3, 1977
12 - Without Love (take 1) January 22, 1969
13 - Without Love ( takes 2,3,4 ) January 22, 1969
14 - Without Love (master take 5, undubbed) January 22, 1969

when people make arguments against elvis: 'just a white boy imitating black music', 'jerry lee lewis was better'...and blah, blah -
i can't imagine the level of ignorance....
some people will willfully reject elvis just do it...
but gazza summed it up perfectly.
there will never be anyone else who had that much of an impact on that wide a scale....
he was original, singular - the look, the moves, the voice....the legacy.
my mom saw him in 1956 at the houston colliseum and again at the houston astrodome in the mid-70s..
and she still gets a little misty-eyed when a song comes on the radio or when she sees his face in a magazine etc...
that's timeless.

well, she ain't yoko..
i think she's genuinely trying to preserve his legacy and to minimize the negative aspects of his later life, but people will always sneer - like you.
you can say marketing, shmarketing, but cilla seems genuine and don't even tell me about the karate instructor!
elvis was humanly flawed too and a woman has her perogatives.

I cannot echo Gazza's comments enough.

Elvis Presley was the KING. The recording he made between 1954 and 1958 changed everything. He was the first rock 'n' roll star and no one since has had the same impact. He was a cultural phenomenon and should be cherished and appreciated by all.

I also feel that his tring of immediate post-army singles are highly underrated. His Latest Flame/Little Sister, Fame and Fortune, Stuck On You, Surrender, Can't Help Falling In Love, etc. Elvis Is Back and Golden Records Vol 3 should be in everyones record collection along with the first two volumes and his imortal debut effort.

Not really. When I was a kid rock n roll was supplanting the boy scout cool spectrum, kind of crowding them out. But we didn't start any fires....Elvis started one though....

I can't of a better way of expressing that Gazza, one of my Sister's was crazy about Elvis when I was growing up, I was 11 in '64 when Stones/ Beatles & all those other English groups hit big time, I got into Elvis later on, & realized how great he was, I like him more from the 50's though, I think that period was special.
