Neil Young box set due in '09
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO - More details have been revealed about the first volume of Neil Young's comprehensive career retrospective, which is expected to be released on DVD and Blu-ray discs next year.
A five-minute preview posted on YouTube boasts the 10-disc set, "Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1: 1963-1972," is "the most ambitious artist collection ever produced."
It has 128 tracks, including 43 unreleased recordings.
Because the package is being released on DVD and Blu-ray, the music can be packaged with thousands of images of photos, lyric sheets, letters and memorabilia.
The set also includes hours of video in high definition and a 236-page hardcover book.
The release of the box set has already been delayed but it's tentatively scheduled to go on sale Feb. 24 for more than US$300.
Young plans to release more box sets in the future chronicling the rest of his career.
He has also released a number of concert recordings recently - including "Live at Massey Hall 1971" and "Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968" - with more to follow.
Young said earlier this year that he waited for new technology to come along before compiling all his archived matter, because he didn't think CDs would do the project justice.
The Blu-ray package can also be updated through the Internet when new material becomes available.
"Previous technology required unacceptable quality compromises," Young said in May in a statement.
"I am glad we waited and got it right."
