I don't know what this topic was going be, you mean David Crosby & Roger/Jim Mcguinn were ego manics????? but being brought up in the 60's, The Byrds were a great band, they had the longest hair of any American band, I used to see their pics in Hit Parader, that used to publish the lyrics of songs, that was around 65/66, no music, just lyrics of the top songs of the day, along with articles, especially of The Stones, it was one of the few magazines of it's time that covered Rock Bands & Artists.

funnily enough i know exactly what you're talking about and agree entirely.

crosby is just flat out creepy - that passive/aggressive hippy fascist type of thing - and if mcguinn was half as talented as he thought he was he'd be a genius...he's insufferable

Gene clark left the band years before it happened, he didn't want to fly (By Aeroplane) that's a different question about Chris Hillman, after The Byrds he was a part of The Flying B.Brothers, with Gram Parsons.

They're earlier recordings are great. Mr Tambourine Man, Turn, Turn, Turn, I'll Feel A Whole A Lot Better, All I Want To Do etc.

I loose interest when it comes to the Gram Parsons country-rock bit.

Chestnut Mare is a good track, though.

"5th Dimension" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Perfect songs and sound for the time period in which it was made. I do love the early Byrds too...Smiley

One of the few songs that I heard and had to go out and buy that very day....I was 13/14 and walked home from school with my friend Claudia, telling her that I was taking my 95 cents to Woolworth's and buying the Byrds new single! Had to do that with "You Really Got Me" two years earlier. Incredible song, mostly written by Gene Clark with help from a couple of other Byrds, and possibly, one Rolling Stone {if you believe the stories}... Wink

while i am no great fan of crosby and mcguinn's personae - which was the subject of Motels' opener - i do like a lot of the music

unlike HTM tho, i prefer the Parsons era stuff

Sweet Heart of the Rodeo is a beautiful record - despite the fact it is probably responsible for the Eagles

the byrds were several different bands the first era ending when gene left in 66, then crosby fired in 67, gram and chris out in 68 which left jim the only survivor. each incarnation created some memorable music though like most groups they were the sum of their parts. post byrds crosby may have had the most lucrative career (the man does have a powerful voice) and gram the most renowned(partly due to his untimely death). gram gets alot of credit with creating a new genre of music which seems dubious considering the other members backgrounds, certainly he was a catalyst. sweethearts strongest track was penned by dylan(the byrds well) before and after gram. gene parsons should also be credited. gene clark had the voice and the writing skills. he left the byrds at their peak and went on to dillard and clark whos first record was as important as sweetheart and which counted bernie leadon as a member who also played with the burritos and was a founding member of the eagles. clark went on to record to the masterpiece no other which imo is the best record of any of the byrds alumni. hillman was the most talented instrumentalist of not only the core band but a leading light of the movement. a member not only of the byrds, but of the burrito's and later manassass. he still carries the torch today..........
