Greatest Christmas songs/albums ever
Dec 8th, 2008 at 5:13am
Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
Let's discuss the greatest Christmas songs and albums ever.  Here's my nominees.

Songs:

1. Father Christmas (Kinks)
2. Blue Christmas (Elvis)
3. I Hate Christmas (Oscar the Grouch)
4. Happy Xmas (John Lennon)
5. Little Saint Nick (Beach Boys)

Albums.

Phil Spector (runaway winner.  Love it through and through despite some questionable song choices (Marshmallow World?)

A Reggae Christmas.  Excellent from tiny RAS Records including Freddie MacGregro, Eek-A-Mouse, and drum titans Michigan & Smiley.  May be hard to find now.

The Christmas Song - Nat.  Of the big three crooners, this is the best half-hour.  No crap songs like Sinatra's Mistletoe and Holly (Oh by gosh by golly!).

Sesame Street Christmas.  Anyone with kids appreciates the fact that Sesame Street music is so good, otherwise we'd all be tortured for hours.

The Ventures.   The songs sort of evolve out of the the usual sound.   Extremely cool.

George Winston, December.  Whoa!  Major mid-80s New Age flashback when you put this on!  Hard to believe this style of music was "it" for a year or two.  Paints a nice picture late at night.

This of course, is the tip of the iceberg.  I forgot about Chuck Berry and Keith's version of his song, Springsteen, and a million other nominees.  What are they?  I'm tired of the same old  War horses couldn't drag me away

Happy Xmas!

The best Xmas collection for me has been Time life collection, it includes (for me) the artists who made most familiar Xmas songs famous, like Bing Crosby with "White Xmas, Nat King Cole doing The Xmas Song, in other words other people have covered these songs, but in my mind I'll always remember the people who first covered them & made them famous.

Its a shame about Kirsty MacColl, very pretty and such a great voice.  She died a hero.

G em g em
G am
Come down to the manger, see the little stranger
C d g
Wrapped in swaddling clothes, the prince of peace
G am
Wheels start turning, torches start burning
C d g
And the old wise men journey from the east

Chorus:
Em d c g
How a little baby boy bring the people so much joy
Am
Son of a carpenter, mary carried the light
D g
This must be christmas, must be tonight

A shepherd on a hillside, while over my flock i bide
Oh a cold winter night a band of angels sing
In a dream i heard a voice saying "fear not, come rejoice
It's the end of the beginning, praise the new born king"
Chorus

I saw it with my own eyes, written up in the skies
But why a simple herdsmen such as i
And then it came to pass, he was born at last
Right below the star that shines on high

Seriously,it really doesn't get better than this:

Mary grows a child without the help of a man
Joseph get upset because he doesn't understand
Angel comes to Joseph in a powerful dream
Says "God did this and you're part of his scheme"
Joseph comes to Mary with his hat in his hand
Says "forgive me I thought you'd been with some other man"
She says "what if I had been - but I wasn't anyway and guess what
I felt the baby kick today"

Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe

The child is born in the fullness of time
Three wise astrologers take note of the signs
Come to pay their respects to the fragile little king
Get pretty close to wrecking everything
'Cause the governing body of the whole [Holy] land
Is that of Herod, a paranoid man
Who when he hears there's a baby born King of the Jews
Sends death squads to kill all male children under two
But that same bright angel warns the parents in a dream
And they head out for the border and get away clean

Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe

There are others who know about this miracle birth
The humblest of people catch a glimpse of their worth
For it isn't to the palace that the Christ child comes
But to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums
And the message is clear if you've got [you have] ears to hear
That forgiveness is given for your guilt and your fear
It's a Christmas gift [that] you don't have to buy
There's a future shining in a baby's eyes

Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe

"Merry Christmas Baby" has many great versions, including Elvis, Charles Brown, Tina Turner, and (my personal favorite) Otis Redding.  Jethro Tull's "Christmas Song" is cool.  So is The Pretenders' "2000 Miles."  "Run Rudolph Run" rocks.  It ain't Christmas without the Chipmunks:  "We've been good but we won't last/Hurry Christmas, hurry fast."  But Number One will always be (especially today) "Happy Xmas (War is Over)."

thanks nasty - i have you to thank for turning me on to the ventures' xmas album, which i can dig, for sure. i also enjoy the booker t and the mgs xmas album, and of course, keef's run rudolph gets a mention, though he never did follow through on releasing it every year, no matter what Wink and, while not a xmas tune, tom waits likes to bookend his postcard from a hooker song with silent night, so i will include that here, too. oh, and fear's f*ck xmas should be on this list, so i will add it...

i have a jacob miller xmas album, but i dont have a turntable set up to listen to it, so that will have to wait til next year...

on the other side of the coin, that dave matthews tune makes me wanna hurl every time i hear it and ditto for the video for hall and oates' cover of jingle bell rock. there are a number of others, but i dont want to be el scrooge on the list...

I'll buy that.

James Brown also did it - he did a ton of great and hilarious Xmas songs, but my favorite is called Merry Christmas, I Love You - which gets kind of overlooked because it has the same title as the Charles Brown tune.  Also recommended are Go Power at Christmas Time and Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto.

Solomon Burke's Presents for Christmas is SB channeling SC, Sam Cooke.  It is majestic.

For White Christmases, I think I'll take the Drifters' version, with Clyde McPhatter's exuberant vocals.  I think we had a big debate on this board last year about the moroseness of the Otis Redding version and exactly what it meant.  Anyway, this year I ride for Clyde.

On the blues tip, Sonnyboy Williamson (II) did a tune called Santa Claus.  The cops arrest SBW as he goes through his baby's dresser drawers looking for his Santy Claus!

Old time blues/primitive fans are directed to the fantastic Dust-to-Digital comp Where Will You Be Christmas Day? for a great comp of 78s in the gospel, blues and calypso stylee.  Greatness.  http://dust-digital.com/christmas.htm

My current blue X-mas jam is Bukka White's awesome Christmas Eve Blues, a tune he did for Blue Thumb's great Memphis Swamp Jam LP in the late 60s.

Top jazz raves include Fats Waller's Swingin' the Jingle Bells, Harry the Hipster's unbelievable Santa's Secret (turns out Santa smokes pot) and Miles Davis and Bob Dorough's Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern).
