MICK JAGGER - SUPERGROUP PLAN FOR 2012 OLYMPICS

Rock icons MICK JAGGER, DAVID BOWIE and ELTON JOHN are reportedly set to form a supergroup - to play at the London Olympics in 2012.

The Rolling Stones are slated to perform at the opening ceremony of the games - and Jagger is said to be keen to include other members of the rock aristocracy.

He wants to be joined on stage by Bowie and John, as well as Phil Collins, Sting, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour, and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

The concert would be trumpeted as featuring the greatest rock "supergroup" of all time.

A source tells Britain's News of the World newspaper, "Mick feels the Olympics coming to London is a huge honour - and wants to make his own gesture with the band. It's early stages but Page, Bowie, and Morrison are already involved, although no-one is quite sure yet how the show will play out in its entirety.

"The Olympics people hope to use the template of the American football Super Bowl half-time show, where an artist takes over the field on a giant stage. Having the Stones on side for a project like this is a huge deal."

Makes it sound like it's in the advanced planning stages. Which is absolute bollocks.

The NOTW article (which isnt online yet) basically speculates on them not only playing at the event, but being joined at it by basically every British musician you can name over the age of 60 (and we all know how much the Stones hate these onstage superstar bun-fights). It also mentions that the Stones "have already held talks with Olympic organisers". Somewhat unlikely as they haven't all been in the same continent together, let alone the same room, since April.

The whole thought of it is staggering in it's sheer stupidity. Any performer would be a sideshow to a sporting event, and would get - what - maybe 10 minutes of performance time? As if they're going to share that with a melee of other performers whose only link is their age and nationality.

Something tells me the British Olympic Committee might also think it inappropriate for a festival of sporting excellence to be kickstarted by a display of wizened pensioners.

I dont think they should have played the Superbowl myself - for the simple reason that I dont think the greatest rock n roll band in the world should be a mere sideshow for ANYBODY -  but by "inappropriate" I mean from the perspective of the organisers, not my own opinion.

There's a huge difference though. The Superbowl at least was a Stones performance. No extra guests, and no multi-superstar dronealong. So, it wasnt TOO cringeworthy.

Also, the Superbowl takes place every year. The NFL are always going to have to come up with a major act as their half time entertainment, so factors such as the artist's age are less an issue. Britain hasnt hosted the Olympics since 1948 - a year or so before Mick and Keith even MET - and it'll never happen again in our lifetime. I would imagine the BOC would be more image conscious than the NFL would be as it's a one-off.

Add to all that the fact that six years will have passed between the two events. Six years in Stones time can make a huge difference. They got away with it in 2006. Whether they would in 2012 I'm not so sure.
