We have further information from the University of Ottawa about Coulter's non-appearance last night.

Last night, the organizers themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. to cancel the event and so informed the University's Protection Services staff on site. At that time, a crowd of about one thousand people had peacefully gathered at Marion Hall.

So…no word of violence at all, just a peaceful protest. Ann Coulter simply chickened out, and the decision was entirely hers and the organizations that invited her.

Never mind, there was no infringement of open discussion here, just another example of right wing cowardice.

Oh, wait — it gets worse. Here's Ann Coulter's description of the event.

The police called off my speech when the auditorium was surrounded by thousands of rioting liberals -- screaming, blocking the entrance, throwing tables, demanding that my books be burned, and finally setting off the fire alarm.

I don't know. Setting off a fire alarm after that chaos of rioting, screaming liberals sounds a bit anticlimactic, you know. As that link also reveals, most of the people in that mob were her fans, politely lined up to attend her lecture.

We also know it wasn't the police who shut down the talk — it was the organizers. Her people.

The University of Ottawa denied responsibility Wednesday for the cancellation of Ann Coulter's speech there, a claim ridiculed by the conservative commentator's team.

Miss Coulter, in the middle of a three-speech tour of Canada titled "Political Correctness, Media Bias and Freedom of Speech," had received a warning about Canada's hate-speech codes and possible "criminal charges" from Francois Houle, the school's academic vice president and provost.

Before the speech, organized by the International Free Press Society Canada and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, the venue was picketed by about 1,000 yelling demonstrators, and student Web pages had been calling for violence against Miss Coulter. On Tuesday night, she was advised by security that her safety could not be guaranteed.

"The organizers themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. to cancel the event," the university said in a statement posted on its Web site on Wednesday that also characterized the demonstrators as having "peacefully gathered."

The school said it "did not at any time oppose Ann Coulters appearance. Whether it is Ann Coulter or any other speaker, diverse views have always been and continue to be welcome on our campus."

Canadian lawyer-activist Ezra Levant, who was scheduled to introduce Miss Coulter at her speech, called the statement "a weak attempt at damage control" now that the school's handling of the speech "has exploded in their face."

"The police and security said it was not safe to proceed," Mr. Levant said. Sgt. Dan Beauchamp of the Ottawa Police, which sent about 10 squad cars to the event, told reporters Tuesday night that "it's a public-safety issue."

Mr. Levant has agreed "to be Ann's lawyer" in bringing a hate-speech claim against Mr. Houle, saying his letter helped create a threatening environment against Miss Coulter.

"The university itself helped to whip up the problem," said Mr. Levant, who also accused school officials of being "desperate to distance themselves from Francois Houle's outrageous letter. Note that they did not talk about their love for free speech to Ann Coulter last week - it was all about limits, 'restraint' and possible prosecutions. Clearly, they realize they made a gross error - and are facing a massive Canadian and international backlash."

Although President Obama repeatedly said he had no idea how health care politics would play out, Vice President Joe Biden told a fundraising audience Wednesday the White House would have been doomed without it.

"If we were unable to move the ball on this issue, not only in the political sense might we be dead," Biden said, according to the pool report filed on the event. "But in terms of being able to deal with other major issues on our plate, we would've been done. Absolutely done."

not odd at all... not odd either that Limbaugh is a huge race baiter... it's just like how it was ok for protestors to shout down represenatives trying to hold town hall meetings and squashing debate and talk, yet they are bitching about coulter, being protested in Canada and shut down... like somehow an american, who is self admitted into to starting arguments deserves free speech in another country... who BTW, she and others put down for socialistic healthcare....
All i know is a disagree with them and they seem to think i beleive what i do b/c i have bad info... yet, once again, more ironic that a brookly hipster... they were fine with bad intel to go to war...

Geesh! Ya think it might have just a little something to do with the fact that the President and the US Congress just told the American people to go fuck themselves? You expect the public just to grin and bear it?! I do not condone any violence period, but that is not the point. When the Representatives of the people blatantly disregard the will of the people, and especially on a matter as important as health care, then there will be some people that say and do things that they normally wouldn't consider doing.

It's like Dubya used to say, "Elections have consequences."  The people won the last election; the corporations, their Repugnican lackeys and their douche bagger--excuse me, douche partier--dupes, lost.  Maybe you reactionaries will do better in the next election, but if it's anything like Riffy's previous predictions--WMDs in Iraq, Obama as toast, health care as Waterloo--I wouldn't bet on it.

ROTFLMMFAO!!! Oh yeah, BJ. Keep on telling yourself that "the people" are behind him! Care to explain to me why independents and young voters are fleeing from this Marxist fuckstick in droves?! If this absolute horrible health care law were so god damned popular with "the people" then why the hell is Barry still trying to sell it with these non-stop campaign style rallies? I mean right this fucking instant this babbling fool is on TV again trying to advance the lies of just how great this massive centralized governmental power grab is going to be.

For the first time in US history states are lining up to sue the Federal government because this bullshit is going to totally bankrupt them. Every single poll shows that the vast majority of Americans do NOT like a bill (now law) that was forced through congress with the most slime ball means possible, and against the will of the governed.

Ain't socialized medicine gonna be great?! 160 brand new government agencies, and 16,000 new IRS agents to "enforce" this Marxist plan! I guess those 16,000 IRS agents are there to help "the people", huh BJ? Oh, and in another case of "Obama is an incompetent fool" files, these 16,000 new IRS agents were not financed in the pages of this 2300 page law! So when asked about how they were to be funded? By "enforcing" the law! That's how.

People in this country hate what this clown represents BJ. I know you find that hard to believe being a true believer and all, but it is true. It's going to be very very bad for liberals come November. And when a new Republican administration is in power I hope and pray that they start a federal investigation in all of the shady dealings by Barry, Rahm, Axelrod, and the whole lot of assorted leftist bastards that are trying to "fundamentally change" this country.

I got some news for you, sunshine. Obummer will easily go down as the worst president in US history. Unfortunately the economic damage that he has already done will take decades to undo. Hell, he hasn't even destroyed everything that he plans to yet! He's still got Cap and Trade, and Comprehensive immigration reform.

He's a joke BJ, and the joke is about to be on you. People have started to figure his Marxist ass out. As I always said they would.

Maybe he will grant amnesty like Reagan or even raise taxes higher or if you get your wish, b/c you hate him more than you love America, maybe unemployment will be as high as it was when Reagan was president.... which btw, he blamed on Carter....

so, now the death threats are real, right?

You do remember, this healthcare bill was what both Clinton and Obama said was priority? And who won, Obama did... so... you also know, that a special election in Mass, making 41 senators out of 100, isn't a national election, and is 10 short of the majority... so, what part of, this is what the people voted for, do you ont get? disagree, yes you do... but that isn't right or wrong is it? Care to expalin the comment you made about blood running in the streets or how a pictire of two black men as you denied the threats against elected officials are relevant as well as sane? Us moraon are all waiting to here you justify cals for violence and race baiting...
it came, flacid and slow!

Hey Pdog. You've got zero game. You are historically illiterate. Take a good hard look at Reagan's jobs numbers again. There was only a very brief period where the unemployment numbers were even close to what this clown has given us. Plus, Reagan did inherit an economy that was in worse shape than what Barry got. Unemployment was at 12%. When Reagan left office the unemployment rate was 4.5%, and it was the single largest expansion of wealth in the history of the country. It also saw a huge swath of people mover from the lower middle class to the upper middle class.

Well, if you don't count the War of Yankee Aggression...a dozen or so states were "up in arms" over the end of slavery too. Seems the lack of slave labor was going to totally bankrupt them.

...

If Fox News had existed in 1860, which side would they have taken? Calm down, Mr. Nankerphelge, it's not a strawman, I'm just wondering.

Richmond Police Detail Shooting Of Cantor’s Office

The Richmond Police Department is investigating an act of vandalism at the Reagan Building, 25 E. Main St., Richmond, Virginia. A first floor window was struck by a bullet at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. The building, which has several tenants including an office used by Congressman Eric Cantor, was unoccupied at the time.

A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.

The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies.

At this time there are no suspects.

Demzo Violentino
Josh Marshall | March 25, 2010, 5:03PM

I came down with some kind of bug today. So from a bit after Eric Cantor gave his press conference this morning until a short time ago I was pretty much out of commission. So I read David's post below about the alleged attack on Cantor's office fresh, not knowing any of the reporting the team had done on the story. And I'm a bit surprised -- or maybe not so surprised -- that Cantor can even walk down the halls of Congress now without friends and associates snickering at him for making such a fool out of himself. Putting together Cantor's statements to the press and the police report about the incident, Cantor's claim seems to be that he was attacked by one of those Renaissance military engineers from Italy who first discovered the parabolic ballistic equations that allowed you to shoot artillery nearly straight up in the air and have it hit your enemy on the way back down.

In case you haven't read David's piece, Cantor went before the press this morning to try deflect criticism of Republican for creating a climate of hysteria and eliminationist rhetoric that has contributed to this rash of violent incidents and acts of vandalism against members of Congress who voted for Health Care Reform. Cantor rather improbably claimed that it was Demcorats fanning the flames of violence and recounted a chilling tale of a recent incident in which an attacker fired his gun through the window of Cantor's office in Richmond.

Alas, the police report shows that when the police investigated they determined that an unknown person had shot a firearm into the air and that on the way back down the bullet broke a window in a building where Cantor has an office. We always try to be extremely cautious when describing these sorts of attacks because often the motivation behind them is inherently ambiguous. But this seems to be a caution Cantor doesn't have much time for since, in need of an incident to create a false and preposterous equality, he determined not only that this unknown assailant was an aggrieved proponent of universal health care but that he or she has an exceptional grasp of trigonometry.

Riffy

Reagan had the lowest job approval rating and highest unemployment of any sitting president. He also raised taxes higher than anyone else ever did and.... drum roll, granted immunity to illegal immigrants. I'm not illiterate, as you like to say, those are facts.... and off the top of my head, Reagans numbers were higher, and the year was 1982, long after Carter was gone, and around as much time as  Obama has been president... oops, wait, no a year longer actually. Reagan left office in 1988, so it's easy to say now... Clinot presidency saw a tremendous groth of jobs and incomes from lower class moving up, but you call him scum... this healthcare will help millions of lower class uninsured, isn't that a good thing...
