the defense of idiots like riffy only call into question whether his defenders share his hatred, bigotry, and ignorance.....

I really thought he was going to mention Sanford for some reason... then again, Spitzer resigned and Sanford didn't... yet, that's ok... if these guys were gay, we'd have to point that out too, so we could align this argument to Riffy's homophobic feelings towrds Barney Frank... How often does Riffy use the term " limp wristed" when talking about politics and people who are liberal... Does anynoe now now what he is really saying?

Here's anther POV.
Does Riffy hate Gays? Muslims? Minorities?
If you've tread his posts, as long as I have been , I'm hard pressed to think anything different. He just used the word gay, to describe two people, and it didn't need to be used to make the point. He often says people here bash Xtianity, yet he openly calles mslims evil and disgusting. Must be Muslim season... oh and let's not forget, the dirlty liberal media, was once called the dirty liberal jew media. It wasn't that long ago either. These same voices weren't to keen on blacks, jews, women catholics ect... they were hard working white americans!!! Not an easy thing for a person to see painful stuff in themselves. I'll give Riffy credit, you can't spot self deception by yourself, and I really beleive he is courageous taking the risk he does to be called out on this shit, we all do.
Riffy is a former liberal himself. He admits that, but doesn't go into great detail about his transition and change. It seems to be described as an event, and awkening of some kind, like the lights just went on... I've pressed him, but only gotten soundbites. To this day, I've been skeptical about how much is true, and how he seems like a convenient " I used to be" and now "I've seen the light argument".
It has a bit of an evangelical ring to it. Then again alot of prophets and seers talk like that, with ferver and passion. It's the ones that can do it, without judgemnt upon others and condemning the lives of those who oppose them or just think or pray differently, those are histories great people, the rest fade away, unless they are so evil, the leave us with nothing but hate, death and pain.
Good luck with the gay thing Riffy. I will oppose you and anyone else til the day I die on this basic human rights issue. Remember, in 2004 your GOP, made this a big issue. I have alot of friends who denied human rights that I beleibe every human being should have. Kind of a big deal to me!!! You're not a bigot, you don't associate or belief in any biggotted ideas!!! BULLSHIT!!!

It's also been my experience that someone, like riffy, who calls his perceived enemies "pussies" rarely sees any.

All due respect LadyJane, but that's absolute rubbish. It's been brought up quite a few times in this topic that some people chose what they felt was their only logical choice regarding the options that were available. Who are these mysterious Obama worshippers on Rocks Off that only love him and refer to him as the Messiah and find no fault in him or any of his actions? I'm pretty sure they are a figment of Riffy's imagination. He screams and curses at anyone who disagrees with his rants and dismisses them as "leftists" and or "libs" whether they are or not.  His latest ploy of pretending to be victimized by these imaginary foes is laughable. How can someone lash out and attack for 300 pages, then play the victim? So back to your statement, there's plenty of middle ground. Some people are just sick of being yelled at by someone who has a terrible track record when it comes to predictions...

really?

LOL! Nice way to misrepresent this entire thread you silly little man child. Obama sucks. He always has sucked. He always will suck. Anyone that used any due diligence would have known that this guy was a radical far left Marxist. But I guess the cult of personality was too hard for some to resist. I have zero doubt that I knew, and continue to know, more about who Barack Obama really is than 99.999% of those that were foolish enough to vote for him. He was the only logical choice between himself and McCain?!?!?! ROTFLMMFAO!! Michael Vick was a more obvious choice for people that knew who the fuck this asshole was!! LOL!

Me playing the victim?!?! Again, I gotta laugh at your idiotic bias. Look pal, I'm not the one here that is being a bigot towards those who follow the Christian faith. You might want to look at the vile shit that some here have spewed about those of us who do practice our faith. Victim?! My ass! I just haven't a problem standing up to bigots! That you won't be honest about what some here are perpetrating is disgusting.

I may well call you, and those like you, libs, leftists, or whatever else that comes to mind. But the fact remains, you were stupid enough to vote for the most radical president in this nation's history. His election can be laid directly at the feet of those who were so foolish that they didn't know what they were voting for when they punched that ticket. Well he is now trying to fundamentally change the very fabric of the country, and millions of people are rightfully pissed and scared about it. I knew that he would do what he is now doing. In fact I've got 300 pages here to prove it. You, on the other, are still trying to defend the worst president in US history.

With this post I am done on this thread. I will be back though. In 2010 I am going to come back to this thread and I'm going to relish in the midterm Republican wins. I am going to laugh heartily at all those that supported this man for president. Watching Barry become a lame duck in only three years of his disastrous presidency will be a lot of fun, but what will really be fun is watching this clown get his leftist ass booted out of office in 2012, and to have his horrible legacy forever shadow the rest of his life.

If I have offended anyone on this thread, so be it. I have been offended by many of you as well. However, I have never been one to hold a grudge, and should any of us meet up for a Stones' show I will be more than happy to forgive and forget if you would be too. This is politics. It gets ugly. The old adage is true. Friends should never discuss politics or religion. We chose to ignore that age old wisdom. Having done so I would like to think that many of us can remain friends anyway. To a very small select group of posters that have gone out of their way to be nasty for nasty's sake. You can kiss my ass for eternity. To the rest of you, I hope that one day we can laugh about this thread over a cold pint.

See you in 2010! Or on another thread! LOL!

Ah yes, low hanging fruit...isn't that how the
Neocons referred to Iraq?

Oops. Pardon my hiccup. But sometimes it's
better to leave the low-hanging fruit alone.
It's often full of wasps.

It's admirable to see that you've moved on
from the Obama thread. Everyone was pretty
worried about your sanity.

I wonder - if, in 2010, the GOP hasn't made any particularly earth-shaking strides in regaining
the many many seats they lost when the nation kicked them to the curb  - if, in fact, the
nation continues to signal that they think BOTH parties are next to useless - will you spare
everyone your "I told you so" routine? We could just re-read some posts by your old friend
Tele instead. He told us so, too.

...

Because the folks you yelled and swore and frothed at for 300 pages - the Obamadrones?  There
aren't any of them there. Pssst...there never were.  Just honest Americans who wish the best for
their country and have an opinion differing from yours.

You can yell yourself blue in the face - in fact you have - and it doesn't change
anybody's mind, because the people you're yelling at are figments of Rush
Limbaugh's oxycontin-addled imagination.

...

OK, I'm going back over to the Obama thread! cya!

I thought this column by Thomas Friedman was pertinent to the meta-discussion about this thread (here and elsewhere).  Friedman's comments resonate with Gazza's criticism of the tone of some of the posts on this thread.  In that sense, this column might perhaps belong in the "polics" thread rather than the "politics" one; but I don't expect the administrators would agree.

It is ironic confirmation of middle of the roader Friedman's point that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has already dismissed him as a "nutjob."  If you read Steele's comments after Friedman's column, you will wonder whether Steele bothered to do the same.

Where Did 'We' Go?
by Thomas Friedman (New York Times)

I hate to write about this, but I have actually been to this play before and it is really disturbing.

I was in Israel interviewing Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin just before he was assassinated in 1995.  We had a beer in his office.  He needed one.  I remember the ugly mood in Israel then--a mood in which extreme right-wing settlers and politicians were doing all they could to delegitimize Rabin, who was committed to trading land for peace as part of the Oslo accords.  They questioned his authority.  They accused him of treason.  They created pictures depicting him as a Nazi SS officer, and they shouted death threats at rallies.  His political opponents winked at it all.

And in so doing they created a poisonous political environment that was interpreted by one right-wing Jewish nationalist as a license to kill Rabin--he must have heard, "God will be on your side"--and so he did.

Others have already remarked on this analogy, but I want to add my voice because the parallels to Israel then and America today turn my stomach:  I have no problem with any of the substantive criticisms of President Obama from the right or left.  But something very dangerous is happening.  Criticism from the far right has begun tipping over into delegitimation and creating the same kind of climate here that existed in Israel on the eve of the Rabin assassination.

What kind of madness is it that someone would create a poll on Facebook asking respondents, "Should Obama be killed?"  The choices were:  "No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care."  The Secret Service is now investigating.  I hope they put the jerk in jail and throw away the key because this is exactly what was being done to Rabin.

Even if you are not worried that someone might draw from these vitriolic attacks a license to try to hurt the president, you have to be worried about what is happening to American politics more broadly.

Our leaders, even the president, can no longer utter the word "we" with a straight face.  There is no more "we" in American poltics at a time when "we" have these huge problems--the deficit, the recession, health care, climate change and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan--that "we" can only manage, let alone fix, if there is a collective "we" at work.

Sometimes I wonder whether George H.W. Bush, president "41," will be remembered as our last "legitimate" president.  The right impeached Bill Clinton and hounded him from Day 1 with the bogus Whitewater "scandal."  George W. Bush was elected under a cloud because of the Florida voting mess, and his critics on the left never let him forget it.

And Mr. Obama is now having his legitimacy attacked by a concerted campaign from the right fringe.  They are using everything from smears that he is a closet "socialist" to calling him a "liar" in the middle of a joint session of Congres to fabricating doubts about his birth in America and whether he is even a citizen.  And these attacks are not just coming from the fringe.  Now they come from Lou Dobbs on CNN and from members of the House of Representatives.

Again, hack away at the man's politics and even his character all you want.  I know politics is a rough business.  But if we destroy the legitimacy of another president to lead or to pull the country together for what most Americans want most right now--nation-building at home--we are in serious trouble.  We can't go 24 years without a legitimate president--not without being swamped by the problems that we will end up postponing because we can't address them rationally.

The American system was, as the saying goes, "designed by geniuses so it could be run by idiiots."  But a cocktail of political and technological trends have converged in the last decade that are making it possible for the idiots of all political stripes to overwhelm and paralyze the genius of our system.

These factors are:  the wild excess of money in politics; the gerrymandering of political districts, making them permanently Republican or Democratic and erasing the political middle; a 24/7 cable news cycle that makes all politics a daily battle of tactics that overwhelm strategic thinking; and a blogosphere that at its best enriches our debates, adding new checks on the establishment, and at its worst coarsens our debates to a whole new level, giving a new power to anonymous slanderers to send lies around the world.  Finally, on top of it all, we now have a permanent presidential campaign that encourages all partisanship, all the time among our leading politicians.

I would argue that together these changes add up to a difference of degree that is a difference in kind--a different kind of American political scene that makes me wonder whether we can seriously discuss serious issues any longer and make decisions on the basis of the national interest.

We can't change this overnight, but what we can change, and must change, is people crossing the line between criticizing the president and tacitly encouraging the unthinkable and the unforgivable.

These are the same people that drafted articles of impeachment for Bill Clinton, and then went looking for a reason.

This situation is way beyond that.  Even the nutjobs who accused Clinton of murder and drug trafficking didn't lead to the poisonous atmosphere we have today - they simply dismantled the mechanism of impeachment.

We're "fortunate" here at RO to be able to see the sickness first-hand.

"It's coming you fucking morons. It's coming fast and hard, and none of you idiot drones are even aware of it!"

Although our friend refuses to define "it", it's obvious that he's not talking about anything legal. Maybe "it" isn't assassination - maybe it's only the military coup that others dream of. Either way, it's a sick world when either of those options are considered anything but treasonous.

There's a third thing... I think that they are slinking away like cowards, and these loud screams of hate and ominous warnings are the death throes of failure and we see the desperation...
Someone can be a racist, and also see black people doing something wrong and say something about it...
but!!!
if you're not a racist, and all you see is people doing something wrong, and have no solution, just blame, then you're more of a problem and useless!

SOME Republicans are (belatedly) trying to distance themselves from the lunatic fringe:

Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-S.C.) offered unusually blunt assessments of the fringe elements of his party and conservative media on Thursday, calling the popular and bombastic Fox News host Glenn Beck a "cynic" whose show was antithetical to American values.

"Only in America can you make that much money crying," Graham said of Beck. "Glenn Beck is not aligned with any party. He is aligned with cynicism and there has always been a market for cynics. But we became a great nation not because we are a nation of cynics. We became a great nation because we are a nation of believers."

Appearing before a crowd of Washington's elite power players and opinion-makers, Graham spoke largely without filter, offering acidic takes on subject well beyond Beck. The Senator called the birther community that questions the president's U.S. citizenship "crazy" and implored them to "knock this crap off" so the country could get on to more important matters.

"I'm here to tell you that those who think the president was not born in Hawaii are crazy," said Graham, who went on to dispel another myth: that Obama is a closet Muslim.

Speaking before The Atlantic's First Draft of History conference, Graham also ventured to call "crazy" a recent article on Newsmax, laying out how a military coup could overtake the Obama administration.

But he insisted that the demagoguery and wild emotions were prevalent to the fringes of both political parties. "There are people out there saying crazy things on our side of the aisle," he said, "there were people saying crazy things about President Bush. That's just the way it is. "

And he insisted that the opposition to Obama was (largely) not based in racial politics.

"How can you go from [the election]," he asked, "and then have a race problem a few moths later? There are people in this party who are having a tough time reconciling having a black president.... But most of these people carrying around crazy signs would applaud Alan Keyes. They are very passionate about their politics and if Alan Keyes spoke at their conference they go through the roof."

Reflecting comments made earlier in the day by his colleague and close friend, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Graham said he was deeply worried about "the passions of cable TV" whipping up the emotions of the public. "If you get rewarded for being a jerk you are going to keep doing it," he said, before labeling "Talk radio, MoveOn.org, and the 24-hour news cycle" as the main culprits in polarizing the nation.

"Can you imagine doing D-Day with cable television?" he asked. "Can you imagine writing the Constitution -- you know, O'Reilly says Ben Franklin's giving in on something. Can you imagine having to do that in this environment?"

I really disagree with the idea that the current situation is exactly like the left's protests against Bush. As I pointed out before, the left  was calling for impeachment, a legal, constitutional process, albeit one which was horribly misused during the Clinton fiasco. Another big difference: the left didn't have its own TV "news" network organizing their "grass roots" protests.

Still, it's nice to see a Republican admitting the batshit insanity of the riffraff.

Yep, agreed.

Even MSNBC gives to much coverage to the GOP fringe, and they usually do it with giggles at the irony of the fringe's hypocrisy.
Time to get serious, IMO.
