"how could we all have been so blind?"

Dude, you are the one that is CONSTANTLY saying that politicians lie - all of them, all the time, about everything.

Given that speech that was only a few years ago, do you honestly believe him now?

HA!!

Here is the cost/benefit of the latest federal government program:

WASHINGTON -- "Cash for clunkers" could have the same effect on global warming pollution as shutting down the entire country _ every automobile, every factory, every power plant _ for an hour per year. That could rise to three hours if the program is extended by Congress and remains as popular as it is now.

Climate experts aren't impressed.

Compared to overall carbon dioxide emissions in the United States, the pollution savings from cash for clunkers do not noticeably move the fuel gauge. Environmental experts say the program _ conceived primarily to stimulate the economy and jump-start the auto industry _ is not an effective way to attack climate change.

"As a carbon dioxide policy, this is a terribly wasteful thing to do," said Henry Jacoby, a professor of management and co-director of the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change at MIT. "The amount of carbon you are saving per federal expenditure is very, very small."

Officials expect a quarter-million gas guzzlers will be junked under the original $1 billion set aside by Congress _ money that is now all but exhausted.

Calculations by The Associated Press, using Department of Transportation figures, show that replacing those fuel hogs will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by just under 700,000 tons a year. While that may sound impressive, it's nothing compared to what the U.S. spewed last year: nearly 6.4 billion tons (and that was down from previous years).

That means on average, every hour, America emits 728,000 tons of carbon dioxide. The total savings per year from cash for clunkers translates to about 57 minutes of America's output of the chief greenhouse gas

given what speech? are you talking sbout the youtube stuff? i saw speeches and interviews, edited... no idea what context... did he lie then or is he lying now? did he change his postion? the question you're asking is very vague?
The genral answer, yes, politicians, almost all, lie and mislead... but asking me if I beleive him now, based on something he said years ago... You might as well ask me if I beleive Poweels speech to the UN now, that hew gave years ago? I didn't beleive him then and now know, Powell later found out, he presented misleading info... time has the effect.

You just realized the fuel standards aspect of this is horrible... I know we aren't FB friends, but there was something on my FB about it, Riffy actually may have been a aprt of it, and it came up. i didn't say anything, b/c it's just part of my, same as the guy before argument. see, b/c it's just like bush, stupid expensive... it is boosting the economy, but so does alot of other shit you can thow money at, that isn't hurting the planet.
Do you somehow think i support this cash for clunkers program? do you really think i support something that is helping put more gas guzzlers on the road? do you think i like Prius drivers, some of the worst most horrbile drivers i've ever encountered? can you really answer these questions?

I'm just curious.
Two people have now said that the legislation does not exist.
How do you know?
Are you guys seriously tracking the bills in Congress.
I mean, BRAVO if you are, but knowing a thing or two about the federal legislative process, my bet is you are either parroting something some political group says or you are hoping that it isn't so.

But honestly - do you really know?
There is that now-famous radio interview with Obama where he said he was unaware of a specific provision of his own legislation -- something about eliminating private carriers.  Did you look at that provision?  Have you followed it as it gets debated?

I do watchCspan, and I know how much legislation changes, that even the authors aren't aware of changes and concessions...
I said, I am not aware of any legislation saying that private insurance will be elimited, a claim that has been made... So, you're wrong on both assmuptions, i'm not parroting any group, not am I wishful thinking. I asked for anyone cliaming that private insurance is to be eliminated, as has been stated, to prove it, back it up. I think that is where your question may be be directed, Riffy said it... is he parroting anyone by chance? I have had music on all day... no news, a little goggle... and RO n FB.
To answer your last question... hell no, i do not know, and I'm willing to do my best to find out. people who think they know, and are absolute, unwilling to see any other views, are not people who teachable, amicable or nice to play with...

I wasn't a proponent of this. Seems like a good idea, but it's a lot of money for a questionable gain. Good for the auto industry, I suppose. And it's always good to lower pollution. This might make larger impacts in the cities, I don't know.

Fancy scientists aren't really very fancy at all. They are highly regarded by me, true. They open their research to peer scrutiny, and usually are humble. Work tirelessly. Bring understanding to the planet. What's not to like.

My problem is with religion, where this scrutiny is taboo. The flock is told some book is the word of God. They are told their very soul depends on their ability to live by this text. Not the slavery part anymore. Punishing your children with paddles is back however. Thanks to the Faith Based Initiatives, there are many reports of this punishment being doled out in the elementary schools down south.

Lets take 1st century social ideas and apply them today. It's working so well in the mid east, we had to follow suit  . . .

Just another thought on this health care debate which hasn't been really discussed. That is this. Notice how the leftists, socialists, stateists, Marxists always frame the debate in terms of "us against the insurance companies". The implication couldn't be more clear, or more wrong headed. Even some on this very thread have made snarky remarks along the lines of "Right wing wackos are now defending big insurance programs!" It's really pretty damned pathetic.

The truth is that these same leftists see absolutly nothing wrong with big government, but they must tear down their perceived villian aka big insurance, big oil, big pharma, big banks, the auto industry, the coal business, big business in general. We have to have an enemy afterall! This tactic is straight out of Rules For Radicals-" Identify the enemy. Freeze it, and destroy it" Is that not exactly what Obama, and his cabal of leftists are doing?

The real argument from those of us on the right is the rights of the individual vs big government. I mean the blatant hypocricy of these leftists is astounding! Remeber these are the same exact people that always scream about a woman's right to abortion. They rail vehemently, "The government has no business in deciding what a woman wants to do with her own body! Every woman should have the right to choose! blah, blah, blah...." and on and on. So how is that that these same people are now completely ready to hand over their medical records and all of their health care choices to a big federal government agency?! Remember lefties, you won't be in power forever. In fact I'd wager that you won't be in power for more than a couple of years with the current rate of anger that you are creating. At that point it will be the rightwing that would have total say on what happens to you, medically speaking, should Barry get his wish. So you see, the truth is that a vote against this boondogle is really a vote for your rights too. I don't want the right or the left making those choices for me. I'll keep what I've got, and thank the government to keep their hands off, and out, of my medical history!

However, if you leftists want to continue to twist the debate into a framework that you feel suits your position better fine, but be ready for when a conservative gets elected and then declares abortions illegal henceforth. Sound good to you? Didn't think so. So why in the world would support, or even contemplate, the federal government in handling your health choices now? Are you folks really that shortsighted?

"Ahhh. I see. Some lawyer. Anonymous source."

Jesus, you of all people shouldn't be a "shoot the messenger" type.
Ain't that what got you hung out to dry?

Yeah she is a big conspiracy theorist and yeah she is a birther.
But if I had a Kenyan birth certificate for Obama, I would want to find a lawyer.
Anonymity in such matters is not unusual.
It isn't like an anonymous source being quoted and you cannot confront the accusation.
The copy is out there to be reviewed.

I have seen claims that it is a fake, but that is not surprising.
Obama has a lot of supporters that would really prefer that this woman and the certificate be discredited.

I really never bought into the whole birther thing.
Seemed to me that Clinton Inc. would have used that during the campaign if it were true.
Yet we have a Kenyan birth certificate.

"My problem is with religion, where this scrutiny is taboo."

Are you kidding?  Religions, especially Christian religions, are under attack constantly by people just like you!
You judge these people as kooks, lumping them together as if their beliefs are somehow inferior to yours.

"The flock is told some book is the word of God. They are told their very soul depends on their ability to live by this text."

And yet they CHOOSE to go, in most cases.
Sure there are sects that force membership by their children.
But most churches are open to those who wish to believe.
They have faith that some things do not have to proven by scientists to be true.
I am not one of those people, but I respect and tolerate their beliefs because I have yet to see them causing any problems with thier beliefs.

"Punishing your children with paddles is back however. Thanks to the Faith Based Initiatives, there are many reports of this punishment being doled out in the elementary schools down south."

It is rather telling that funman rails against Christianity, and Christians in particular, as being intolerant. I guess his tolerance only extends to those that he agrees with. Hypocrisy much?

you keep arguing something that doesn't exist, and that is an elimination of prvt. ins. and people being forced into a govt. run system.
The rest of what you're stating is def. where me and you differ. I'm not against big biz, I'm against biz unregulated and operating special interests groups and lobbys that directly influence legislation and give them an unfair advantage and the abiltiy to screw over the citizens of the USA... that's not commie or socialist... I'm anti-fascist.
Where I do agree with, at least on point, is that having private industry bear the blame is wrong. If in the theory a company was regulated and providing what the consumer is paying for, this debate regarding how they operate ends for me. I want healthcare for everyone b/c I don't want sick people bankrupting the hopsitals and already existing social system. As we stand that's what is happening, b/c untreated illness and people using ER's for first care are killing us already. The way things are going, private ins. is forced to raise premiums, cut benefits and it is b/c hopsitals are not getting paid for ER visits or the people showing up are draining the services. What is being proposed actaully can eliminate some of the cost and burden on both hospitals and insurance companies. That is a real part of the legislation, not this made up stuff you claim is going to force insurance companies to close shop.

Kid probably needed a good paddling.
You coulda used some in your childhood, fuman.

It is rather telling that funman rails against Christianity, and Christians in particular, as being intolerant. I guess his tolerance only extends to those that he agrees with. Hypocrisy much?

This just in:

A former Blackwater employee and an ex-US Marine who has worked as a security operative for the company have made a series of explosive allegations in sworn statements filed on August 3 in federal court in Virginia. The two men claim that the company's owner, Erik Prince, may have murdered or facilitated the murder of individuals who were cooperating with federal authorities investigating the company. The former employee also alleges that Prince "views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe," and that Prince's companies "encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life."

In their testimony, both men also allege that Blackwater was smuggling weapons into Iraq. One of the men alleges that Prince turned a profit by transporting "illegal" or "unlawful" weapons into the country on Prince's private planes. They also charge that Prince and other Blackwater executives destroyed incriminating videos, emails and other documents and have intentionally deceived the US State Department and other federal agencies. The identities of the two individuals were sealed out of concerns for their safety.

It might do you well to sit down with Mick Taylor and few of the old timers at this board and clear the air over a few beers.
