Hey Bucky I know you're a fan of history, as am I, so why not let's compare Iraq with,.....say....D-Day? On June 6th, 1944 we lost more troops in 24 hours then we have in the years since we entered Iraq.

not to be nitpicky, but this is not true. the allies suffered 2500 KIA on DDay (about 1200 of which were on omaha). we've lost what - 4200 KIA in iraq so far? somewhere around there.

So tell me.

Was Papa Obama a Muslim or not??
I mean..during the campaign, it was all a dirty little racist scare tactic manufactured by the EVIL RIGHTIES.

Hmmm...but now, while trying to cast his "spell" on the Muslim world, President Barack HUSSEIN Obama is "bragging" about his Muslim roots.

Talking out of both sides of the mouth.
Nothing new about that as far as I can see.

Same as the old boss."

Meanwhile old Osama is still threatening to kill us all.

Ain't life grand???

just to put it into perspecive LJ:

america is still the greatest country on the friggin' planet. that, essentially, is all you need to know.

(i will, however, await riffy's rant with bated breath.)

Obama's father and stepfather were both Muslims.  I've never heard anyone deny that.  The EVIL RIGHTIES' lie was that Obama was/is also a "secret" Muslim.

...

Despite  that, a majority of Americans voted for and elected him to be the President of the United States. Go figure!  That's the way things work around these parts. Don't like it? Wait till the next
election and try again. OR - move to Russia!

USA! USA! USA!

I don't claim to be an expert on stem cells - apparently you do because your wife slept at a Holiday Inn express once.  But from what I do know, there is still scientific controversy as to whether or not embryonic cells are truly any better than adult stem cells in forming any specific type of cell.

or, more accurately, my wife studied genetics and medicine for about ten years, racking up thousands in student loans, and decided to go into primary care instead of dermatology. d'oh! i, however, am by no means an expert. but the stories she tells me of patients in their 30s that are now suffering from terminal cancers...or the fact that half the adults in my family develop alzheimer's of some sort....or every time i turn on the TV and see michael j fox doing the shakey shakey thing....just makes me wonder why those on the right are opposed to it, seeing as those stem cells will get tossed anyway.

Quote:
And your "why not try" argument presupposes that we have not already tried.
But we have.
Federal funding was not available in this country for embryonic stem cell research.
But is has been in other countries for years, and if privately funded, biotech companies are certainly not prevented from such research.  So all of this research has been going on for years, on all types of stem cells to create "cures" for all sorts of diseases.  And what do we have so far to show for it?

we have a headstart on the problem. we have ten years of groundwork that scientists today and tomorrow will be able to use to cure said diseases. we ain't going to find a cure for parkinson's overnight...these things take time...and we just lost 8 years. thanks, dubya!

Tee to the hee hee...I can't wait to hear the answer to that one.

As for the D-Day figures, your total is incorrect, according to http://www.ddaymuseum.co.uk/faq.htm . Traditionally, the figure for the allies was indeed thought to be 2500 KIA, but that has recently been proven wrong.  The Americans lost 2499 by themselves, with 1915 losses for the other allies.  However, that doesn't change the fact that Mr. Riffhard is talking out his ass, as usual.

In addition, those troops were lost in a military engagement in a declared war, while the Americans killed in Iraq were not.  But what exactly is the point of this comparison, anyway?  If someone used a similar logic and said that we lose more people in car wrecks every day than we did on 9/11, would that be a cogent argument? Of course not.  Is Mr. Riffhard suggesting that the people who died and continue to die in Iraq don't matter because we've lost more on other occasions? I hope not, but his "logic" could certainly be used to support such a premise.

Well if we're going to start talking about the death toll on Oma Beach specifically I'll concede your point. However, let's, for the sake of argument, say that the Iraq War has been nothing like the carnage the US suffered at Iwo Jima.

As per the CAFE Standards, and how they are responsible for more deaths annually than the annual death toll in Iraq.

Here--->A number of studies have documented the lethal consequences of requiring carmakers to improve fuel standards.

*     According to a 2003 NHTSA study, when a vehicle is reduced by 100 pounds the estimated fatality rate increases as much as 5.63 percent for light cars weighing less than 2,950 pounds, 4.70 percent for heavier cars weighing over 2,950 pounds and 3.06 percent for light trucks.  Between model years 1996 and 1999, these rates translated into additional traffic fatalities of 13,608 for light cars, 10,884 for heavier cars and 14,705 for light trucks.12

*     A 2001 National Academy of Sciences panel found that constraining automobile manufacturers to produce smaller, lighter vehicles in the 1970s and early 1980s "probably resulted in an additional 1,300 to 2,600 traffic fatalities in 1993."13

*     An extensive 1999 USA Today analysis of crash data found that since CAFE went into effect in 1978, 46,000 people died in crashes they otherwise would have survived, had they been in bigger, heavier vehicles.  This, according to a 1999 USA Today analysis of crash data since 1975, roughly figures to be 7,700 deaths for every mile per gallon gained in fuel economy standards.14

*     The USA Today report also said smaller cars - such as the Chevrolet Cavalier or Dodge Neon - accounted for 12,144 fatalities or 37 percent of vehicle deaths in 1997, though such cars comprised only 18 percent of all vehicles.15

*     A 1989 Harvard-Brookings study estimated CAFE "to be responsible for 2,200-3,900 excess occupant fatalities over ten years of a given [car] model years' use."  Moreover, the researchers estimated between 11,000 and 19,500 occupants would suffer serious but nonfatal crash injuries as a result of CAFE.16

*     The same Harvard-Brookings study found CAFE had resulted in a 500-pound weight reduction of the average car.  As a result, occupants were put at a 14 to 27 percent greater risk of traffic death.17

*     Passengers in small cars die at a much higher rate when involved in traffic accidents with large cars.  Traffic safety expert Dr. Leonard Evans estimates that drivers in lighter cars may be 12 times as likely to be killed in a crash when the other vehicle is twice as heavy as the lighter car.18

riffy, you could also argue that the govt should lower the speed limit to 15 MPH. that way, the death tolls on america's roads will drop to almost nil.

as far as the death toll on DDay, jesus, every book i have ever read has said about 2500. that website you quoted says 4414 but then goes on to say 2500 at other places in the text. sounds as if the research is ongoing and not officially official...is it accurate?

My proposal for dealing with all the debt is to completely cut off the boomers. No Social Security and no Medicare. Sorry mom and dad, you squandered it already, no use sticking the next generations with YOUR debt.

Why should the soldiers be the only ones sacrificing right now?

"just makes me wonder why those on the right are opposed to it"

It is a highly charged issue for those on the right that are pro-life.
And given the fact that the research into stem cells -- even embryonic cells - has been ongoing here and abroad despite the ban on federal funding, many on the right do not see the need to lift that ban and further condone those who consider a human embryo the moral equivalent of a recycled can.

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said large U.S. budget deficits threaten financial stability and the government can’t continue indefinitely to borrow at the current rate to finance the shortfall.

“Unless we demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal sustainability in the longer term, we will have neither financial stability nor healthy economic growth,” Bernanke said in testimony to lawmakers today. “Maintaining the confidence of the financial markets requires that we, as a nation, begin planning now for the restoration of fiscal balance.”

As for the door/window thing, please use it as an example of Obalama's stupidity more often! throw in "Austrian language" & "profit/earnings ratio." And admit than Diamond Joe Biden is actually dumber than any of us thought. Why, he's dumber than those on the Left claim Sarah Palin is. I think even Obalama would agree with me at this point.

I thought this a.m.'s speech was pretty good. So very complicated issues. Glad I got to listen and weigh in without ANY influence by pundits.

Issues that are important to me were handled well, imo:
--Women's rights (could hear a pin drop in that room with this topic)
--Strong Security against Al-Queda
--Israel's right to exist and her strong SOLID bond with US
--Recognition of Holocaust (yes Mr Ahmadinejad it DID happen and it will NEVER happen again)

He needed to walk a tightrope and I think he succeeded.

See. I DO have the ability to be fair and balanced!

Shockingly I agree. Barry didn't completely throw the USA under the bus. So in that regard it far exceeded my expectations. He gave a decent speech for at least part of it. However, he idiotically claims that Iran should have the right to go nuclear for "energy purposes"! He's kidding, right? This is the same exact thing that Madeline Notbright said when NK continued to disregard UN sanctions back in 2000. We see where that got us. And who, pray tell, is giving Iran help on their nuclear "energy program"? Why it's none other than North Korea!

NK is enriching weapons grade plutonium at a record pace and has fired seven medium range and intercontinental missiles within a month. They too told us they needed to go nuke for "energy purposes"! Now Barry's gonna believe that Iran, which sits on a literal ocean of oil, needs to develop nuclear "power capability"?! Really? Does Barry think that the mullahs, and Ahmadinejad are so concerned about the environment that they want to explore alternative energy?! LOL! So Barry says it's cool if Iran goes nuke for power while at the same time killing any chance for us to use nuclear power here!?!?

The level of naivety from the Barry Admin is staggering when it comes to the complete lack of support for Israel and the ambivalence shown towards a holocaust denying madman with a hard on to "wipe Israel off the planet".

Other than that massively stupid display of redundant stupidity it was an adequate speech.
