SHOVEL READY INDEED!

Mayor Richard Daley said today Chicago has compiled a wish list of "shovel-ready projects" to spend federal economic stimulus funds on should Congress approve a plan.

Unlike hundreds of other cities, however, Daley said Chicago won't make its list public.

"Yes, we do, we have our list, we've been talking to people. We did not put that out publicly because once you start putting it out publicly, you know, the newspapers, the media is going to be ripping it apart," Daley said.

"It's very controversial. Yes, we have ready projects from the Board of Education to the City Colleges to the Park District to the CTA and the city of Chicago. Oh yes. Us and New York decided not to do that. We thought we could go directly into the federal bureaucracies and the different departments," the mayor added.

Later, Daley was asked why he wasn't being more transparent.

"Read some of your newspapers. Heh heh," he replied.

President Obama has shown the dent in his shield. He’s sensitive about what people think of him. That’s understandable since there was very little negative coverage of him during the campaign. In addition, he had so much money he could drown out any negative questions about him. The networks and the mainline newspapers had to admit after the election they’d been a little slanted towards Obama in their coverage. You can’t blame them. As then-Senator Biden said during the campaign, “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

The coverage of candidate Obama was like a storybook with a very happy ending. Even during the campaign, there were hints of the thin skin on criticism. He didn’t want Maureen Dowd commenting on his big ears. His “people” tried to silence radio and newspaper voices in Chicago who were negative towards him. He threw reporters from newspapers that didn’t endorse him off “Obama Air” in the waning days of the campaign. He called out Sean Hannity and the Fox News Channel. Interestingly enough, when the Pew Research Center looked at the coverage of the candidates in the general election, Fox News Channel had almost an even split of stories about each candidate — they were indeed balanced.

Then there was the appearance of “pay to play” during the inaugural coverage. ABC News was the big monetary sponsor of Obama’s Neighborhood Ball and they were the only broadcast outlet to get an on-air interview with the new president on Inauguration Day. As a final nail in the Inauguration Day snub of the media, there was the swearing-in “redo” and no broadcast media sources were asked.

Krauthammer nails it again!

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, February 6, 2009; Page A17

"A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe."
-- President Obama, Feb. 4.

The Fierce Urgency of Pork

Catastrophe, mind you. So much for the president who in his inaugural address two weeks earlier declared "we have chosen hope over fear." Until, that is, you need fear to pass a bill.

And so much for the promise to banish the money changers and influence peddlers from the temple. An ostentatious executive order banning lobbyists was immediately followed by the nomination of at least a dozen current or former lobbyists to high position. Followed by a Treasury secretary who allegedly couldn't understand the payroll tax provisions in his 1040. Followed by Tom Daschle, who had to fall on his sword according to the new Washington rule that no Cabinet can have more than one tax delinquent.

The Daschle affair was more serious because his offense involved more than taxes. As Michael Kinsley once observed, in Washington the real scandal isn't what's illegal, but what's legal.  Not paying taxes is one thing. But what made this case intolerable was the perfectly legal dealings that amassed Daschle $5.2 million in just two years.

He'd been getting $1 million per year from a law firm. But he's not a lawyer, nor a registered lobbyist. You don't get paid this kind of money to instruct partners on the Senate markup process.  You get it for picking up the phone and peddling influence.

At least Tim Geithner, the tax-challenged Treasury secretary, had been working for years as a humble international civil servant earning non-stratospheric wages.  Daschle, who had made another cool million a year (plus chauffeur and Caddy) for unspecified services to a pal's private equity firm, represented everything Obama said he'd come to Washington to upend.

And yet more damaging to Obama's image than all the hypocrisies in the appointment process is his signature bill: the stimulus package.  He inexplicably delegated the writing to Nancy Pelosi and the barons of the House.  The product, which inevitably carries Obama's name, was not just bad, not just flawed, but a legislative abomination.

It's not just pages and pages of special-interest tax breaks, giveaways and protections, one of which would set off a ruinous Smoot-Hawley trade war.  It's not just the waste, such as the $88.6 million for new construction for Milwaukee Public Schools, which, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, have shrinking enrollment, 15 vacant schools and, quite logically, no plans for new construction.

It's the essential fraud of rushing through a bill in which the normal rules (committee hearings, finding revenue to pay for the programs) are suspended on the grounds that a national emergency requires an immediate job-creating stimulus -- and then throwing into it hundreds of billions that have nothing to do with stimulus, that Congress's own budget office says won't be spent until 2011 and beyond, and that are little more than the back-scratching, special-interest, lobby-driven parochialism that Obama came to Washington to abolish. He said.

Not just to abolish but to create something new -- a new politics where the moneyed pork-barreling and corrupt logrolling of the past would give way to a bottom-up, grass-roots participatory democracy. That is what made Obama so dazzling and new. Turns out the "fierce urgency of now" includes $150 million for livestock (and honeybee and farm-raised fish) insurance.

The Age of Obama begins with perhaps the greatest frenzy of old-politics influence peddling ever seen in Washington. By the time the stimulus bill reached the Senate, reports the Wall Street Journal, pharmaceutical and high-tech companies were lobbying furiously for a new plan to repatriate overseas profits that would yield major tax savings. California wine growers and Florida citrus producers were fighting to change a single phrase in one provision. Substituting "planted" for "ready to market" would mean a windfall garnered from a new "bonus depreciation" incentive.
After Obama's miraculous 2008 presidential campaign, it was clear that at some point the magical mystery tour would have to end. The nation would rub its eyes and begin to emerge from its reverie. The hallucinatory Obama would give way to the mere mortal. The great ethical transformations promised would be seen as a fairy tale that all presidents tell -- and that this president told better than anyone.

I thought the awakening would take six months. It took two and a half weeks.

Jesus fucking Christ, did you guys see this?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,489473,00.html

Am I reading this right?  I think this article is telling us that a captured Islamic Al Quada terrorist, who was involved in the 9/11 attacks on America, was subsequently released from prison in Quantanamo by George Walker Bush III, and then that very Islamic terrorist released by George Walker Bush III murdered an American citizen.  Did I read that correctly?  Did I miss something?

This isn't one of those Islamic terrorist murderers that George Walker Bush III negotiated with and pardoned.  We are talking one that was actually in prison and George Walker Bush let him go, so he could commit, and in this case DID commit, further acts of terrorism against America.

Do they Bush Geeks know about this?  Do they know where the website I found that link on is?  I found it on www.foxnews.com. ; Not even they could find a way to apologize for this cowardice and incompetence.  Surely, even the queerest of all Bush Geeks would just flat out condemn, with no qualifications, the clear dereliction of duty here - George Walker Bush III actively failing miserably to do the very thing he's paid to do.

Maybe we need a poll, like:

Do you think its a real, real good idea to release Islamic terrorists involved in the 9/11 attacks on America from prison, or do you think its a real, real bad idea?

Maybe that would help to put the chisel on this complex issue, for the Bush Geeks who are still on the fence with it.

Well we are one step closer to a full blown socialist state thanks to left wing special interests groups, the Democrats that are paying them off, and three idiot Republicans that are apparently signing off on the largest transfer of private sector wealth and power to the federal government in, not just US history, but the entire history of recorded civilization! Thanks for pissing my daughters future away you fucking Marxist bastards in DC!! All of the sudden the benevolent hand of the farthest left government headed up by Obama, and his socialist buddies Pelosi and Reid are going to decide how to spend the money of generations of Americans who have zero legal say as to how this money will be spent! Thanks you socialist clowns!

The USA has entered into very dangerous territory when it punishes capitalism and free market economics. The Sal Alsinsky loving Obama is a pure ideologue who detests capitalism! He seeks power and more power! Have none of you people figured this out yet? He is gonna make the assinine Bush spending practices look like a goddmaned cake sale, and liberals are just whistling "Happy Days Are Here Again" about it!

Sounds like some people need to really brush up on history and remember what made this country the most successful democracy/republic ever conceived by man. The scare tactics of the most far left ideological president ever has pushed us to very edge of nothing less than a complete socialist remaking of our way of life. The Obamadrones have been duped into giving over all of our individual liberties to the power and judgment of a group of people that claim that they know better than "we the people" how to live as a society. Not one of these enlightened liberals has yet to even try and defend this generational theft of a spending bill! Not one! They can't defend it because they can't even explain it without giving away the big secret of nationalized socialism!

We're about to be screwed for a long long time and we are allowing purely un-American principles win the day as a way of ramming a far left agenda down all of our throats. This is going to get very very nasty. The American people are going to one day wake up and realize that "Hope" and "Change" really means "Servitude" and "Obedience" to  a huge central government that is the very antithesis of what the Founding Fathers had in mind. We are throwing our entire American history down the shitter because of the messianic appeal of an ideologue that rails against that very history!

Here learn something before it's too damned late! Learn it or forever say goodbye to it!

It depends where the money is going. For all the talk about falling bridges & repairing the "infrastructure", this bill only spends 5% on fixing that. This is "going to blow a hole in the deficit" (LOL) and I think it's ironic that the same deficit hawks from the George Bush Era are now suddenly signing off on over $1.5 TRILLION to little proven effect.

Cher: Republican Rule Almost ‘Killed Me’

Friday, February 06, 2009
By Nicholas Ballasy, Video Reporter

(CNSNews.com) - Grammy award-winning singer and Academy award-winning actress Cher told CNSNews.com that living under Republican rule almost “killed" her, and she does not understand why anyone would want to be a Republican.

She also said that President Barack Obama’s “intelligence” and “spirit” are “so great” he will be able to do “more than than anyone could possibly do.”

“His intelligence is so great and his spirit is so great, I believe he will be able to do as much if not more than anyone could possibly do,” Cher told CNSNews.com at the “Declare Yourself” inaugural ball.

“I just think he’s totally the right person at this time in our history," she said. "He brings something more in his spirit than maybe another president could be even with the same intelligence. There’s something about him that brings more with his spirit, and that’s what Americans need right now. Republicans almost killed me.”

When asked to explain how Republicans somehow “killed” her, Cher was not specific.

“You know what? I have so – I try to be charitable and there are some really good Republicans, but I just don’t understand how anyone would want to be a Republican. I just can’t figure it. I don’t understand,” she said. “If you’re poor, if you’re any kind of minority – gay, black, Latino, anything. If you’re not a rich – I don’t know. If you’re not a rich born again-Christian, I don’t get it.”

Cher also said President Obama will not end the war in Iraq right away.

“I think as soon as he can. I don’t think it will be easy. It would be kind of simplistic to think that’s going to happen right away,” she said.

Cher rose to fame in 1965 as a member of the pop/rock duo "Sonny & Cher" with her future husband Sonny Bono. Among their hits songs were "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On." Cher won an Academy Award for her performance in the 1987 film "Moonstruck." She also won a Grammy award for her 1998 solo album, "Believe."
