Republican lawmakers are raising concerns that ACORN, the low-income advocacy group under investigation for voter registration fraud, could be eligible for billions in aid from the economic stimulus proposal working its way through the House.

House Republican Leader John Boehner issued a statement over the weekend noting that the stimulus bill wending its way through Congress provides $4.19 billion for "neighborhood stabilization activities."

He said the money was previously limited to state and local governments, but that Democrats now want part of it to be available to non-profit entities. That means groups like ACORN would be eligible for a portion of the funds.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., told FOX News Tuesday that the money could be seen as "payoff" for groups' political activities in the last election. ACORN generally supports Democratic candidates and actively backed President Obama last year.

But he said the funding is just one example of frivolous spending items in the $825 billion package.

"It's just a long list of spending items. Not a real economic stimulus job creation bill," Vitter said. "It's line after line after line of favorite liberal spending programs, and it amounts to a big government bill -- not a job creation bill."

Democratic leaders in the House have already dropped federal funding from the bill for new contraceptive services and ongoing programs to stop sexually transmitted diseases after Obama told them that it did not fit in with the job-creating objectives of the package.

Obama plans to meet with Republican leaders on Capitol Hill Tuesday to hear some their input on the package. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama is open to suggestions.

"If there are good ideas -- and I think he assumes there will be -- we will look at those ideas," he said Monday.

Here's a bump.

Our new Treasury Secretary is a tax cheat.

Our new Defense Secretary is a former lobbyist, which Obama had to make an exception for in his new ethical guideines.

And our new Secretary of State has a husband who collects untold $$ from foreign governments but won't say who exactly.

Change We Can Believe In, most certainly!

seems to me our defense secretary is not new.

where was the outrage when members of the bush admin outed CIA agents, started unnecessary wars, and begun the socialization of the banking and auto industries?

both parties are fucked up...you know it...so why not relax, enjoy the ride and apply for your own bailout?

No individual bailouts for the weary.

I was denied a refi solely because my house fell in fmv, which is clearly a factoid beyond my control.

My mortgage broker informed me that the real estate bailout:

1). Is designed to help folks who don't need help; and

2).  He's getting laid off.

Clearly, this is shit that BO inherited.  But,  can his leadership cure this mess?  I think not.   With the best scenario, this is a long term problem.

You're right FG. He did inherit this mess. However, the unspoken truth is that the Democrats also created it! See Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They were the first dominoes to fall, and we were warned about this almost five years ago by none other than Bush. Guess who put the brakes on any and all oversight and regulation? Oh, and also please remember that Barry was the second highest paid politician from the board of Fannie Mae! He made $126,000.00 in just two and half years!! Now that's leadership that we can believe in!

You're right, Riffy.  Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac shit precedeed Bush and Co.   But, in any case, BO inherited this mess and it is unlikely he can fix it.

And, why did BO choose a tax evader for Treasury secretary?  Doesn't bode well for his agenda.

TODD HARRISON
How realistic is a North American currency?
Commentary: Uniting U.S., Canada, Mexico money could result from crisis
By Todd Harrison

Last update: 6:12 a.m. EST Jan. 28, 2009"World, hold on. Instead of messing with our future, open up inside." -- Bob Sinclair

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Thomas Jefferson once said: "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on." As the global financial system pushes on a string, investors are desperately trying to hold tight.
The New World Order is upon us, full of hope, promise and a fair amount of fear. In our recent discussion regarding the direction of our country, we noted the risks of catering to conventional wisdom and the implications for the U.S. dollar. See MarketWatch column on New World Order.
The Minyanville mantra is to provide financial news you need to know before you know you need it. That's a fine line to walk, as foresight often flies in the face of mainstream acceptance.
In 2006, it seemed counterintuitive to forecast a "prolonged socioeconomic malaise entirely more depressing than a recession." See Minyanville column.
For years, the notion of an "invisible hand" was conspiracy theory until we learned that the Working Group on Financial Markets was a central policy tool. See Minyanville column.
And now, as we gaze across our historically significant horizon, we must open our minds to thoughts and ideas that may seem foreign to folks conditioned by the past and stunned by the present.
Currency crossroads
As governments take on more risk -- as they price assets on behalf of the market and transfer debt from private to public -- the common denominator, or release valve, becomes the currency.

If our economic condition is allowed to take medicine in the form of debt destruction, the greenback will appreciate, and asset classes as a whole will deflate. If we continue to inject drugs that mask symptoms rather than address the disease, the likelihood of a seismic readjustment increases in kind.
The deflationary forces in the marketplace are pervasive, and the "other side" of our current equation, hyperinflation, may be years away. Given the magnitude, breadth and pace of the global financial epidemic, however, we must explore each side of the twisted ride.
Years ago, the Federal Reserve wrote a "solution paper" regarding the need to combat zero-bound interest rates. The concern was the flight of capital from the U.S. and an option discussed was a two-tiered currency, one for U.S citizens and one for foreigners.
Canadian economist Herbert Grubel first introduced a potential manifestation of this concept in 1999. The North American Currency -- called the "Amero" in select circles -- would effectively comingle the Canadian dollar, U.S. dollar and Mexican peso.
On its face, while difficult to imagine, it makes intuitive sense. The ability to combine Canadian natural resources, American ingenuity and cheap Mexican labor would allow North America to compete better on a global stage.
Experience has taught us, however, that perceived solutions introduced by policy makers and politicians don't always have the desired effect.
Unintended consequences
I've long contended that, much like the Internet prophecy proved true -- but not before the tech crash -- so too would globalization, albeit not without painful-yet-necessary debt destruction.
To get through this, we need to go through this. If we're not allowed to go through it, foreigners will seek alternative avenues. Remember, for holders of dollar-denominated assets, seeds of discontent have been sowing under the surface for years, with the greenback off 30% since 2002.
More likely than not, global leaders will watch how our new administration attempts to tackle the financial crisis before taking drastic steps. They understand that co-dependent risk exists as a function of the derivatives that interweave our financial infrastructure. If they could disassociate from our economic ecosystem without inflicting massive damage on themselves, they would have done so long ago.
If forward policy attempts to induce more debt rather than allowing savings and obligations to align, we must respect the potential for a system shock. We may need to let a two-tier currency gain traction if the dollar meaningfully debases from current levels.
If this dynamic plays out -- and I've got no insight that it will -- the global balance of powers would fragment into four primary regions: North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In such a scenario, ramifications would manifest through social unrest and geopolitical conflict.
This particular path isn't something one would wish for, but the cumulative imbalances that steadily built in our finance-based economy must be resolved one way or another. Therein lies the critical crossroads we together face as our wary world attempts to find its way.
Scary? Yes. Probable? Not so much, at least for the time being. Possible? Certainly, although I'll again offer that it could take years before the pieces of this prickly puzzle fall into place.
Effective money management dictates weighing the entire probability spectrum of potential outcomes and factoring them into our decision making process. While the notion of a seismic currency shift may seem obscure, we must respect the possibility long before it becomes front-page news.
For if we've learned anything through the last few years, proactive thought provocation is a necessary precursor to effective preparedness.

Moonie you are a first class grade A putz! Here we are witnessing the largest expansion of the federal government in US history, easily dwarfing that of the Democrat's demi-god FDR, the most massive redistribution of wealth in the history of the nation, an insanely pork laden stimulus package proposal that seeks to not only redistribute the wealth, but also reorganize the makeup of our entire society and all you can do is bitch about George W. Bush?! You're a putz!

Yes! What Cadillac Charles Rangal is trying to do here is skirt the 10th Amendment! Could some slip-and-fall trial lawyer dance around it in court? Sure! Are you offering your services tough guy? What is being discussed in that video is exactly what any rational sane individual can hear with their own ears! Namely, the reshaping of our country into a socialist Utopia that morons like Reich, Rangal, and Barry have been having wet dreams about for years!

Barry and Co. have written into this pork package over 4 billion for ACORN!!! 4 BILLION!!! Are you bitching about that? No! Hell no! Why should you concern yourself with Barry's attempt to give a committed Marxist group (and YES they are Marxist!) 4.6 billion dollars in my children's and my grand children's money! Just because they are under federal investigation in 11 separate states for voter fraud they should still get "our" money! Right, Moonie? Now that Barry is in charge look for all federal prosecutorial proceedings to halt against ACORN post haste! Another $650,000,000 is going towards digital converter kits for the "poor"!!! Boy that's really gonna help jump start the economy!! How many converter boxes will six hundred and fifty million dollars buy any way? You care not one bit about any of this? A conservative would, but you? Nahhhh! Let's just continue to bitch about Bush! Hey what about that German pope! He's a damned Nazi! Romney!! He's no conservative! He's a damned Mormon! You idiot! You are a real piece of work Moonie. Not one single conservative on this board sees you the same way that you see yourself! Not one. You'll have to trust me on this!

Yes, you are a straight up moron, and a putz. You're no conservative at all. In fact from now on I'm gonna start calling you Goober! That's right Goober! Just like McCain's little ass kissing buddy Lindsey "Goober" Graham! You are now officially Goober!

Shades of you're an idiot! Shades of liberal ass kisser! Shades of clueless conviction-less contrarianismship!

You'll have to excuse my attempt at stupid ass Moonie-speak. Oops, beg your pardon, Goober-speak. Guess I need to hit some hotel mini bars and watch some more MSNBC to get to your level of "true conservatism". LOL!

Riffy

You stridently asked what you stupidly and uninformedly believed to be a rhetorical question earlier in this thread about a 10th Amendment/Declaration of Independence argument you found on a Youtube video.  You were given a decent and reasonable answer, and a non-political and narrow one that didn't criticize you for anything else you were talking about.  You then bizzarely went off on tangents and misreadings, and now you're talking about Acorns, converter boxes, and Mormons, with all the usual, unoriginal jargon you think looks studied and compelling.

The most absurd bit of your post, which you have now done no less than 5 times on this thread that I can count, is continuing to believe you're persuasive or intelligent reciting some fact you happen to like, and then concluding that since no one else has mentioned it prior to your decision to do so, they must be on the wrong side of it.  Shades of Heller's Popinjay.  Riffy, the reason that childish trick works when Limbaugh does it is because he's preaching rhetoric to a choir, and he screens his calls.  You don't have those capabilities here, and you end up getting wrapped around your own axle.  Why don't you just admit you overreacted to the silly annotations you happened to see on some Youtube video, and other than googling "tenth amendment" after the fact, you never really read anything at all about what you claimed to know definitively?  You're still golden Spuds, no one can prove you wrong on all that other end of society stuff.

So, I looked at it a bit.  There are no guarantees in life, but I'll say with 99% confidence that whatever economic stimulus package gets passed, not a single one of the hundreds of thousands of parties fighting to get federal $$$$$$ (The Large Green), is going to cry the Tenth Amendment or the Declaration of Independence when they don't get what they want.  Sorry, dude.  In a country with legions of skilled constitutional lawyers of every political kind, with access to big $$$$$$ clients with interest of every type imaginable, not a single fucking one of them is going to pursue what will be forever known as........."The Riffy Doctrine."

P.S. All the true conservatives on the board think you might be turning quasi-flitty.  Shades of Bowers.  Shades of Hardwick.  Shades of Yard Pigeons v. Angola State Prison.  You'll have to trust me on that.

$335,000,000 FOR STD PREVENTION IN ECONOMIC STIMULUS BILL
Wed Jan 28 2009 09:58:30 ET

Democrats may have eliminated provisions on birth control and sod for the National Mall in the "job stimulus" -- but buried on page 147 of the bill is stimulation for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases!

The House Democrats' bill includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease education and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

In the past, the CDC has used STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called 'Booty Call' and 'Great Sex' put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds.]

"Whether this funding has merit is not the question; the point is it has no business in an economic plan supposedly focused on job creation," says a stimulated Hill source.

Developing...

Sounds absurd.  Sounds as absurd as nationalizing the mortage industry, buying up AIG, and all that other stuff supposed to save America that I was pissed off about months ago, back when you were defending it in your spastic ass "total economic catastrophe" phase.   Unlike you until roughly 8 days ago, I have long believed that the government should not spend its way into short term prosperity at the expense of long term stability.  That would seem to be to be especially true now, after the unheard of spending fiasco of the last 8 years.  But I'm glad you are finally there, Sasquatch.  Maybe you'll even be a conservative someday?

Money for sex disease, Jesus fucking Christ.  I'm going to denounce that.  There.  That's more than you did even.

This is cool.  Go get some more articles, cut and paste them here, and ask me if I'm for or against them.  I'll try to respond when I get back from the Super Bowl.  Just don't call me goober, though.  That's not nice, puffkin.

Plasma TVs?  Yeah, right.  In this economic mess that President Obama inherited, people are more likely to be selling their plasma (the blood kind) to pay the bills.

Lookie here Skee, don't take this personally, but I am not your political friend.  We can still be alcohol friends in Ronald-themed threads, but on this thread, you need to pretty much go pound piss, ya goddam liberal.

Caritas Christi, no true conservative I've ever encountered would do that.  Do his political friends know this?

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. That's not leadership. That's not going to happen."

"There will be time for them to make profits, and there will be time for them to get bonuses ... Now is not that time."

Barack Obama

"We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another -- that we cannot measure our greatness in the society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these."

"That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done -- that is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this race who understands that."

"That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls -- our souls are broken in this nation."

"So I am here right now because I am married to the only person in this race who has a chance at healing this nation."

"And Barack Obama will require you to work."

"He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism, that you put down your division, that you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones, that you push yourselves to be better, and that you engage."

"Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual -- uninvolved, uninformed."

Michelle Obama

And the kicker!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

C. S. Lewis

How do you like your messiah now Obamadrones?

His approval numbers are dropping like a rock! No shocker to any of us that knew what he was really all about!
