MARION, Ala. – In central Alabama's Perry County, government workers already get a day off for President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Veterans Day. In 2009, they'll get one more: "Barack Obama Day."

The rural county, which overwhelmingly supported Obama in last month's presidential election, has approved the second Monday in November as "The Barack Obama Day." Commissioners passed a measure that would close county offices for the new annual holiday and its roughly 40 workers will get a paid day off.

Sponsoring commissioner Albert Turner Jr. said the holiday is meant to highlight the Democratic president-elect's victory as a way to give people faith that difficult goals can be achieved.

Perry County has 12,000 residents, most of them black. Voters there backed Obama by over 70 percent in a state that gave 60 percent of the overall vote to Republican John McCain based largely on strong support from white voters.

Then again, his policies appear to be the same as Bush, only he is willing to piss away a lot more money. Gates remains, no change in Iraq because he does not want to f-up what is perceived as a "won war", and the same Wall Street clowns who got us in this financial mess are now his economic brain trust.

it was a runoff, right? Was there more than two in the first vote? Usually runooffs aren't that close, if other candidates are left off the ballot, and turnouts aren't as high either...usually!

One half million jobs axed last month. Which really means 1.5 million jobs were axed, because around 2/3 of Americans do jack fucking zip when they show up at work anyway, so those jobs don't count in the final government figures.

1/2 million job axed. Holy biff. There are only 300 million people in the country and 200 million of them are either retired, underage, independently wealthy, permanently welfared, spastic, incarcerated, or retarded. That leaves 100 million people needing a place to go 5 days a week where they can pretend to be doing something productive. And .5 million positions in such places are now gone - 1 out of 200 displaced.

That is disturbing. As signficant and disturbing as George Walker Bush III's decision to turn the country into a Socialist mess was, this is even more so. To me at least. 1/2 million jobs. Holy fuck!
