Good advice. Care to compare our respective electoral predictions? As you may recall, mine was "Obama in a landslide" the moment McCain picked Palin. What was yours again?
I'm glad you are on the debate team, and not the hate team. I do hope you can see the difference from conservatism and racism, I know you can... I just needed to say it!
Obama is going to be like the Evlis of Presidents, let's hope he doesn't croak on the crapper!
I understand the difference between conservatism and racism clearly. Cracks like "affirmative action baby" directed at a person whose achievements are due solely to his substantial abilities are nothing but racist. I challenge Glencar to provide
any proof that Barack's admission to Harvard Law (or to Columbia or Occidental) was a product of affirmative action. I would also be interested in any evidence that Clarence Thomas was even
close to being the most qualified person for a Supreme Court appointment, and not merely appointed because of his race.
Now, as to conservatism and racism, it is true that they are not equivalent. On the other hand, opposition to advances in civil rights has always been associated with conservatism. Conservatives like to point out that many Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of
1965 while many Democrats opposed it. What they fail to note is that, in the mid-Sixties, you had two types of elected officials who are now essentially extinct: liberal or moderate Republicans and conservative Southern Democrats. Liberal (so-called "Rockefeller") Republicans joined Northern Democrats in supporting civil rights. Conservative Republicans (chief among them Barry Goldwater) joined racist, reactionary Southern Democrats in opposing civil rights. This is why Goldwater won only in the Deep South (and his native Arizona) and why Republicans had a virtual lock on the South from that day until this election. Of course, conservatism is generally associated with opposition to every form of progress, from belief in the heliocentric theory of the solar system through rejection of the Divine Right of Kings in the Enlightenment right down to the teaching of evolution today. That is the legacy of conservatism: to wrongheadedly fight progress every step of the way.
