Accepting that this is nothing more than a hit piece, which I'd wager it is, the fact remains that whatever Sarah Palin does or doesn't know frightens me much less than what Obama thinks he knows.

From The TimesNovember 7, 2008
Timesonline.co.uk

My No 1 job as First Lady is to be First Mom

Helping working women and families is dear to the heart of the President-elect's wife. But so are sleepover strategies..

Michelle Obama

A few weeks ago at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, I shared with the nation some of the many reasons why I believed my husband would be an extraordinary president. It was the biggest speech I'd ever given. When I was finished, I headed backstage with my daughters. They turned to me, breathless with excitement.

“Mom,” Malia, our ten-year-old, said. “We have something important to tell you. We need to have a sleepover!”

That snapped me out of speech mode, with the bright lights and applause, and back into the role I love: Mom. The next night, 15 giggling girls - my daughters, the Biden granddaughters, and friends - took over our hotel room.

Now that Barack has been elected president, it will be an honour to be First Lady. I will work daily on the issues closest to my heart: helping working women and families, particularly military families. But, as my girls reminded me in Denver, even as First Lady, my No 1 job is still to be Mom. At 7 and 10, our daughters are young. My first priority will be to ensure they stay grounded and healthy, with normal childhoods - including homework, chores, dance, and the real football.

Our girls are the centre of Barack's and my world. They're the reason he ran for president - to make the world a better place for them and for all children. For us, and for millions of Americans, that's what this election has been about - making sure that America remains a country where everyone can fulfil their God-given potential.

Barack and I have travelled to every corner of the country, talking to people about their lives and dreams. Their stories have touched our hearts and strengthened our resolve. They've made us more certain than ever that, despite any differences we may have, there is so much that unites us as Americans. But times are tough. Parents are working harder than ever to raise their kids, pay bills, help out their parents and keep up with the rising cost of living. Caring for their families is their greatest joy - but it's harder to make ends meet.

We've talked to mothers whose salaries can't cover the cost of groceries - but if they take a second job, they can't afford childcare. More than 22 million working women don't have paid sick days. Millions of women are doing the same jobs as men but they're earning less.

It's even harder for military spouses. Their husbands and wives are away serving our nation for months at a time. So they have to be Mom and Dad. They're working, checking in on their in-laws, helping with homework, and doling out discipline - and every night, they're praying with all their hearts for their loved ones' safe return. These families aren't asking the Government to fix their problems. They're asking for it to understand what's happening to their families and to find ways to help.

As First Lady, I will continue these conversations with working women and military spouses, and I'll take their stories back to Washington to make sure that the people who run our country know how their policies touch their constituents' lives.

The struggles of America's families aren't new to Barack. He was raised by a single mom who put herself through school and built a career that she loved while still finding time to read to him each morning. So, he knows how heroic America's parents can be. That's why he is committed to restoring the middle class, cutting taxes for 95 per cent of all working Americans, establishing pay equity for women, and expanding family leave. He also knows that when our military goes to war, their families go with them. He's a strong advocate for predictable deployments and better healthcare - including mental health - for returning service people.

These issues are my passions. Now that the election is won, I'll keep working to find solutions that make a real difference in people's lives. With Barack serving as President, we will fill our home with talk of how to serve our nation's families better.

And occasionally, when our daughters insist, we'll host sleepovers, too.

The View: Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s Concession Speech Unites America
November 6th, 2008
by Stuart Heritage
Hecklerspray.com

On The View yesterday, bets were on as to exactly when Elisabeth Hasselbeck would spontaneously combust and/or claw wildly at her own face.

Because, judging by her fervent campaigning for the Republican party, Tuesday’s election win for Barack Obama seemed like literally the worst thing that could possibly ever happen to Elisabeth Hasselbeck in her entire life. But on The View yesterday, something strange happened.

On The View yesterday, Elisabeth Hasselbeck gracefully admitted defeat and declared her support for the president-elect. And, thanks to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s elegant speech, the partisan schisms that threatened to tear America apart were instantly healed. Well, in the parts of America that watch The View, anyway. So the chronically old and unemployed parts that can’t find their remote control to change channel. Isn’t that enough?

Over the last few years, The View has come to symbolise the political gulf in America better than anything else. One one side there’s a screaming fat lesbian, and on the other side there’s a shrieking, blindly-patriotic government sock-puppet, and in the middle are a couple of funny-looking old ladies whose names we’ve never bothered to learn. Perfect.

But recently, as the endless election campaigning slowly built to a crescendo, things on The View got a little bit out of hand. Rosie O’Donnell resigned and Elisabeth Hasselbeck started screeching at such a terrifying pitch and velocity that The View almost sacked her before she caused irreversible structural damage to the Earth’s core.

And so, after Barack Obama won the general election on Tuesday night, speculation was rife over what Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s reaction would be on the following day’s edition of The View. Scientists had narrowed it down to three likely scenarios:

1 - Elisabeth Hasselbeck would throw herself on a Samurai sword after the second commercial break.

2 - Elisabeth Hasselbeck would be punched unconscious by a victory-giddy Joy Behar.

3 - Elisabeth Hasselbeck would try and be gracious in defeat, only to end up choking to death on her own tongue while trying to force the words out.

In fact, none of those things happened. Realising that blindly following the word of the president without question has done alright for her so far, Elisabeth Hasselbeck declared that she’d do exact same thing for Barack Obama. Look, here’s the video…
http://www.hecklerspray.com/the-view-elisabeth-hasselbecks-concession-speech-uni...

We’re still a little unconvinced by this sudden turnaround. After all, given Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s froth-mouthed introduction speech for Sarah Palin a fortnight ago, we’re fully expecting that she’ll be announced as Palin’s campaign manager for 2012. If that happens - judging by the past - Hasselbeck will advise Palin to run on the twin messages of ’screeching like an alarmed dolphin in a fire’ and ‘bug-eyed scuttlebutt’.

But let’s concern ourselves with that later. For now, it’s just nice to see that the civil war that almost ripped The View apart has ended. And that means that we never have to watch another episode so long as any of us live. Wonderful.

Is that anything like a "sound byte"?   Something taken out of context and exploited? Or is Palin just empty headed?

If the McCain people were as good at real politics as they are at office politics, I'd be in a much better mood these days. I find it extremely hard to believe those allegations about her knowledge level. I'm sure she was a diva at times but even Tina Fey said that she was an extraordinarily nice woman & she's no fan. BTW I heard a recording of Maya Angelou (faux poet) on Harry Smith & she's now proud of our country. WTF? These assholes don't like America until one of their ilk gets in?

The anger I feel right now is palpable. For the 1st time in my adult life, I'm ashamed of my country. I know the feeling will go away but it's what I feel now. I can't help it. Having a charlatan & idiot in office does that to a man. Even one called Cinderella.

Translator's note:  This individual lives in Opposite Land, where it's Opposite Day every day.  The election of one of the most brilliant and authentic individuals to ever obtain the presidency would be expressed as "Having a charlatan & idiot in office" in Opposite-Speak.  An occasion which even political rivals describe as a day in which all Americans can feel proud would be described like this:  "For the 1st time in my adult life, I'm ashamed of my country."  Similar semantic reversals should be applied to any statements from this and other Oppositists.

Explain "brilliant & authentic" to me. Keep in mind 57 states & breathylyzers for asthmatic kids. And authentic people usually live real lives. All your asshole's done is write 2 autobiographies & raise hell among the losers of Chicago's Southside, for his benefit as much as theirs.

Gerard Baker of the London Times. He concludes thus:

Most remarkably, for all the transformation in US politics wrought by the past four years, Americans themselves do not seem to have undergone any great ideological conversion. In 2004 exit pollsters asked voters how they would identify their politics. The answers were 21 per cent liberal (Left), 45 per cent moderate, 34 per cent conservative. On Tuesday, the same question elicited these responses: 22 per cent liberal, 44 per cent moderate, 34 per cent conservative. President Obama and his jubilant supporters in Congress will surely not need reminding that this is still a centre-right country.

BTW I noticed Meg & the would-be censor(at least until the point where I stopped reading his inane posts) never answered my essential question: Is it fair that someone who works hard to achieve something in life via going to school, running up massive debts, working incredibly stressful hours & doing a demanding job should have extra money taken out of their wallets to give $2500 to some losers who a) don't pay taxes to begin with & b) never made a goddam effort to get ahead in life? This is an important question & smilies & empty-headed giggles aren't an answer. Keep in mind that when those people pay extra in taxes they might have to can some asses around the office which will result in more loafers requiring more handouts. Depression 2.0.

McCain's biggest mistake wasn't Palin. It was not running ads with this assholes speeches. I tell you, McCain was like Dole 2.0!

MILFORD, Conn. -- Barack Obama's former pastor, speaking Thursday at a forum about race and religion, criticized the media's coverage of a controversy that threatened to derail Obama's campaign and caused the president-elect to sever ties with his longtime spiritual leader.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. said the media took videotaped clips out of context that showed him making anti-American statements from the pulpit of the Chicago church where Obama had worshipped for 20 years.

The videos, which included Wright thundering "God Damn America" from his pulpit, dominated cable television for weeks.

Wright, speaking to an audience of about 200 people at a Milford church, said he was trying to convey the anger and desire for vengeance that people felt following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He said the media failed to explain that Wright was a proud Christian who was raised in a Christian home.

"Their intention was to use me as a weapon of mass destruction, to tear down that man's integrity," said Wright, former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

In a question-and-answer session with the audience, Wright said he didn't believe Obama shared opinions that were publicized on the video clips.

"Do you agree with everything your pastor says?" Wright asked. "Ninety percent of the people sitting in church don't agree with everything their pastor says. What I saw is not an index on what he did or does not believe."

Last spring's controversy was a stumbling block for Obama's campaign and prompted him to make an impassioned speech about faith and religion. Obama at first expressed support for Wright, saying that "I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother."

But six weeks later during a speech at the National Press Club, Wright offered eyebrow-raising opinions about the U.S. government, praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and hinted that Obama was distancing himself from the pastor for political expediency.

The next day, Obama said he was outraged and distanced himself from Wright.

Glenny, it's obvious you are venomously opposed to the policies of our new president-elect, which is your God-given right as an American.

But how does that make the guy an "asshole" and a "douchebag"?  Those are attacks on his character, not his politics.  What did he do, as a person, besides beat the pants off your candidate, to warrant such personal attacks.

Those are just flip names for him. I do think he's a piece of shit. He didn't just beat the pants off McCain; he ran ads calling him an angry, erratic old man. Why is it when the Dems run ads calling GOPers old, the MSM never takes them to task?

What is less than accurate about that?  He IS.  He showed anger in the debates, he announced suspending his campaign for a day without thinking it through, and he made old-man gaffes like reuniting Czechoslovakia and placing Iraq next to Pakistan.

Reagan, at 74, used his age for one of the best one-liners in presidential debate history.  McCain was genuinely funny on SNL, but he didn't have any charisma on the stump, far as I could see.

I think many of us appreciate you setting aside the personal insults on Obama, who for better or worse is our new leader and as such deserves some degree of respect.  Let's go get drunk

Rahm's Dad's a real charmer. He might actually need a censor!

It includes this nugget from the paper's interview of Emanuel's father in Israel, which I imagine we'll be hearing more about — or, at least, we would be if a similar thing had been said by, say, Sarah Palin's father:

In an interview with Ma'ariv, Emanuel's father, Dr. Benjamin Emanuel, said he was convinced that his son's appointment would be good for Israel. "Obviously he will influence the president to be pro-Israel," he was quoted as saying. "Why wouldn't he be? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to clean the floors of the White House."
