" Play with one Beatle, and it really f*cks up your jazz career : Denny Seiwell on Wings, and other things

http://youtu.be/D47r43is_Zc

Denny Seiwell had played with Zoot Sims and J.J. Johnson before joining Paul McCartney and Wings. His work on 1971's Ram, in fact, arrived even as he played dates with Billy Joel and James Brown, among others.

Elsewhere, Seiwell worked with Art Garfunkel, Rick Danko of the Band, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin and the Who. Still, it's his time with McCartney, which included a stint through 1973 in the first lineup of Wings, that remains his signature moment in rock.

Appearing on both Wings' debut album Wild Life as well as the follow up Red Rose Speedway, Seiwell would be part of the charttopping "My Love" and the Oscar-winning "Live and Let Die" singles before leaving on the eve of McCartney's sessions for Band on the Run.

In this SER Sitdown, Seiwell talks about that seminal association with Wings, even while going deeper into some of other fascinating career intersections -- and his belated return to jazz, always Seiwell's first love...

http://youtu.be/PX1kVV98Wlk

NICK DERISO: You were there as McCartney put together his first post-Beatles band in the early 1970s. There must have been an immense pressure at that point, but it didn't come through in the music.

DENNY SEIWELL: There wasn t really a lot of pressure. (Ace sessions guitarists) Hugh McCracken, David Spinozza and I were doing the Ram album, and we were making records with everybody -- from James Brown to John Denver. We were just caught up in the whole scene, because New York was such a great place in those days. You worked all of the time. So, he was just another artist -- a rather large one, of course. But when we went to work with him, he dissuaded the star power that he had just by being another musician in the studio with us. The Ram recording sessions were just an extraordinary experience for everyone -- including him, I believe. Every day he would come in with a song that he wanted to record, and we'd sit around and add some parts that would really make it shine, and start recording. At the end, we'd say, "My God, this is some really great stuff." It was just the three of us at any given time, Paul, Dave or Hugh on guitar, and me. Paul was playing guitar or piano, so we didn t get to hear bass parts or any of the finished songs or vocals. We worked with a pilot track. So it was really bare bones, and when I finally heard the final product, I was really knocked out.

NICK DERISO: At the time, 1971's Ram was roundly panned, but it's grown in critical stature over the years -- in particular, with the recent reissue. Why do you think it took so long for people to recognize that project as being one of McCartney's better solo records?

DENNY SEIWELL: I think a lot of people were just mad that he was leaving the Beatles, and going off and doing his own thing. I think that had a lot to do with it. I know the critics really did not see the value in that record, but I just thought it was a masterpiece. It's the best record I ever made, and I've made a lot of records.

NICK DERISO: A favorite moment from the new Ram set finds you, alone with Paul, on a musical outtake called "Rode All Night". What's the story behind that song?

DENNY SEIWELL: I was coming back from lunch, and Paul still had some energy. He wanted to do something, even though the mics had been torn down -- it might have been a weekend or something -- so we just started jamming. He started wailing, and I was playing along. We looked at each other like, "Wow, this is really cool," and the engineers were frantically trying to set up the mics and get the board set again. We played for, I don t know, 10 minutes. When we stopped, we said: "Did you get that?" And they said: "We re ready now, Paul!" (Chuckles.) So, that was Take 2. We just continued on in that vein. It was just a jam. He must have had a good lunch that day. As we were doing it, he was writing the song. We'd play for awhile, then he d sing a line or two. For me, I thought: Maybe this is Paul finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. He was realizing that he could make music with people other than The Beatles. For me, that's how I felt about it. I was so happy that he included it on the bonus disc.

http://youtu.be/ULko0NDCGQs

NICK DERISO: At the time, it was said that 1972's Red Rose Speedway was supposed to be a double album, and that seems to be indicative of a band that was clicking on all cylinders. But, not long after, you and Wings guitarist Henry McCullough left. What happened?

DENNY SEIWELL: Henry is a very organic musician. One day, we were up in Scotland working on Band on the Run, rehearsing it, and Paul pushed him into the corner. The vibe was, we had become a band. Henry, though, he liked to play things differently every time. He had a little jazz in him. But there were some other problems with Paul's old band, and the financial arrangements. And he kind of pushed Henry into the corner about playing his part the same way, every time we played -- the solo from "My Love," as an example. I think Henry had just had enough of it, and he left. I had no plans on leaving, but at that point I felt like we had really gone to great lengths to become a band, and to go down to Lagos and record Band on the Run without Henry -- it was just going to be a bunch of overdubs again like Ram. I tried talking to Paul into maybe postponing it for a month, and breaking in another guitar player, so we could be more organic about recording. He didn't go for that. Then some of these other problems started coming to the front, and I said: "It's time for me to leave, too." I was really pushing for an agreement; we were all working on a handshake. We had no contracts or anything like that, in those days. I don t think we could have even had one that was legal, because of the Apple receivership and the court case that was going on at the moment. So I was there at the best, and the worst time, if you will. It's one of the few regrets that I have in my life -- that I didn't sit Paul down and say: "Hey, we gotta talk about this." Today, we re still great friends. We love each other; we talk all the time. I wish him the best. But it's one of those moments that I wish I would have handled it differently. I never made music with anybody like Paul, and I had a very, very special thing.

NICK DERISO: Then there s your appearance on a James Brown record. I understand you got there via Hank Ballard. I wondered if you could help me sort out the turn of events that led to you playing on "Funky Side of Town " from 1972's Get on the Good Foot.

DENNY SEIWELL: It was another recording date. We were called in, and everybody in the band was white -- and everybody in the booth was black. It was really funny. James was producing Hank Ballard, and Hank is in the vocal booth just singing away. We ve got this tune going, and the band had found a really nice groove. James comes flying out of the control room, and he grabs Hank by the arm and he says: "Hank, this is too good for your record. This is going on my record." We cut maybe a couple of tracks that day with James; he was just thrilled with it. We became his band for a moment.

NICK DERISO: Was he familiar with your work with Wings? Did he know who you were?

DENNY SEIWELL: He did say something about the Paul McCartney thing, though I don't remember exactly what it was. He made some sort of a comment. I wish I remembered a little bit more from those days, but it was so hectic. We were just flying between dates. You'd finish one, you'd pack up and you'd run to the next.

NICK DERISO: More recently, you issued a jazz trio record (with organist Joe Bagg and guitarist John Chiodini) called Reckless Abandon that included some original music as well as some reimaginings of Paul's songs in that new context. What was it like to pull apart a track from your tenure in Wings like "Dear Friend" and completely rebuild it?

DENNY SEIWELL: This record was cut in my second bedroom, in my home studio here. It took no time at all. "Dear Friend", everyone has heard Paul's arrangement of it. We wrote down the chords, and said: "Let's play it as a ballad." We only took one take on that. It was miraculous. We played it through and said: "What the f*ck was that?" We listened to the playback, and said: "That was it. Don t touch it." Every time we perform that tune with the trio, it's always special.

http://youtu.be/ootxeG97bsU

NICK DERISO: What ultimately sparked the transition from playing with guys like Zoot Sims, Thad Jones and Anita O'Day into your second career as a rock drummer?

DENNY SEIWELL: I was in New York during those very early days when rock was becoming the mainstream music. It was going into TV commercials, and everything. The fact that I had a little background in Brazilian music, which is a straight-eight form, I got kind of popular in the studios. Then, I started to listen to the rock 'n' roll records, and I got caught up with the Beatles, Dallas Taylor and the Deja Vu album (issued in 1970 by Crosby, Still Nash and Young). There were a lot of records that just appealed to me. I thought: "This is really good. I get to hit the drums a lot harder." (Laughs.) Paul McCartney was my first rock 'n' roll band to speak of.

NICK DERISO: Is it a point of pride with you, though, or a point of annoyance that you re still mostly associated with Wings?

DENNY SEIWELL: A little of each. (Chuckles.) My line was always: "I was a jazz musician until I met Paul McCartney. You play with one Beatle, and it really f*cks up your jazz career." (Laughs.)

PAUL McCARTNEY CONFIRMS FIRST U.S. DATE OF 2013 "OUT THERE" WORLD TOUR

ONE NIGHT ONLY RETURN TO FENWAY PARK

Tickets For July 9 Boston Show On Sale Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at livenation.com or redsox.com

Paul McCartney has announced the date and location of the first confirmed U.S. date of his all new 2013 "Out There" tour:

On Tuesday, July 9, Paul will play Boston's Fenway Park, returning by popular demand for the first time since his August 5 & 6, 2009 shows set the record for the highest ever two-day concert attendance in the history of the storied ballpark.

Tickets to Paul McCartney's historic return to Fenway will be on sale beginning Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at ivenation.com or redsox.com. American Express® Cardmembers can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Tuesday, April 2 at 10 a.m. through Thursday, April 4 at 10 p.m. All times Eastern Standard Time.

As ever, Paul McCartney's "Out There" tour will feature hours of material from the most beloved catalog in popular music, with Paul performing songs spanning his entire career--as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course The Beatles.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For approximately three hours, many of the greatest moments of the last 50 years of musical history--not to mention the soundtracks of entire lives--are magically brought to life as only Paul can do. Last year marked 40 years since Paul's premiere tour as a solo artist and these past four decades have seen him play in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow's Red Square, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people and even a performance beamed into outer space! Having played with his peerless band of Paul 'Wix' Wickens (keyboards), Rusty Anderson (guitar), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums) and Brian Ray (bass/guitar) for over ten years, Paul never disappoints--as The Boston Globe agreed in 2009, hailing the show as "a nearly flawless performance that played heavily to favorites while allowing him to stretch out as an artist who is obviously still vital and relevant."

Paul is throwing himself into 2013 with full force following yet another landmark year in 2012, which saw him conclude his record-breaking "On The Run" tour, release his Grammy-winning Kisses On The Bottom album, accept a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, play at both the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics Opening Ceremony, be named MusiCares Person of the Year, and headline 12-12-12 The Concert For Sandy Relief--to highlight just a few memorable moments. With the "Out There'" tour and a new studio album in the works, it looks like 2013 will show no signs of Paul slowing down.

The "Out There" tour will see Paul and his band travel the world throughout the year, visiting both places of historical significance to Paul and new spots for the very first time. Further announcements and dates will be added in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to www.paulmccartney.com for official news and updates.

Paul Pays Tribute To Friend Phil Ramone

Following the sad news of music producer Phil Ramone's death, Paul said:

"Phil was a great friend of mine for many years. We first worked together when I recorded 'Another Day' in New York at A & R Studios. He was a very sweet man who combined this with expert knowledge of both engineering and production. I'll always remember him as a great friend that I knew, loved and admired over the many years that we worked and played together."

April 1, 2013 -- Belfast Telegraph (IE)

Paul McCartney must concentrate during concerts

Sir Paul McCartney sometimes finds it hard to concentrate while singing old Beatles songs on stage.

The former The Beatles legend loves performing for his fans and still enjoys singing the iconic songs which made him famous. However, as they are so familiar to him he occasionally realises he isn't paying as much attention as he should be.

"Don't ask," he replied, after admitting he sometimes thinks about strange things on stage. "It's scary, because sometimes I suddenly wake up in the middle of a show and think, 'Concentrate man! Come on, you've got an audience here!'"

Many other stars of the 70-year-old's era admit they tire of performing the same tracks over and over again. Paul sees that as a way to relive his youth and is often amazed by how talented he was at such a young age.

"I do enjoy them! One of the great things now is that I'm reviewing them every time I sing them," he told Q magazine, when asked about some of The Beatles' classics.

"I'm looking at myself now, singing it, but thinking of myself then, writing it. It's like time travel. Singing Eleanor Rigby and thinking, 'Keeping her face in a jar by the door,' that's a pretty cool turn of phrase. But some of the other things going on in my mind are nobody's business."

Just got in on the presale to see Paul in Seattle on July 19th, and a front row package is $ 2000.00, behind that they are $1500.00 and the lowest price available on the presale is $ 440.00. So I guess its not only the Stones that are charging off the wall.

" April 9, 2013 -- Indianapolis Star

Will Paul McCartney wing his way to Indy?

Former Beatle will launch 'Out There' world tour in May

Let it be here?

Paul McCartney has announced seven U.S. dates for his 2013 tour, and it's likely Indianapolis soon will be part of the rock 'n' roll icon's itinerary.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse plans to host a by-invite event announcement titled "Out There" - also the title of McCartney's tour - on Friday. The announcement will be preceded by an English breakfast, an appropriate meal to salute a musician who grew up in Liverpool and captivated the world as a member of the Beatles.

The "Out There" tour begins on May 4 in Brazil. The U.S. dates announced so far: May 18 in Orlando, Fla.; May 22 in Austin, Texas; May 26 in Memphis, Tenn.; May 29 in Tulsa, Okla.; July 9 in Boston; July 12 in Washington, D.C.; and July 19 in Seattle.

As a solo artist, McCartney performed at Bankers Life Fieldhouse (previously known as Conseco Fieldhouse) in 2002 and at Market Square Arena in 1990. He played two shows with the Beatles at the Indiana State Fair in 1964.

'Wings over America' To Be Reissued In May

This Spring will see another chapter unfold in the life of Wings, the UK rock group formed by Paul McCartney after the break-up of The Beatles and one of the most successful bands these Isles have ever produced.

To celebrate the release on May 27th of 'Wing over America' & 'Rockshow' we are relaunching the Wings Fun Club for a limited time only. These emails will keep you up to date with the re-issue campaign. We will also be launching a microsite for fans to leave their memories of the tour as well as featuring hundreds of exclusive photos from the tour! Keep checking PaulMcCartney.com for details... CLICK TO SEE WHAT IS IN THE BOXED SET

'Wings over America'

First, the historic live album, which documented the band's triumphant 1976 tour across North America, will be reissued in a range of formats. Fans and hardcore devotees alike will be especially thrilled with the stunning four-book, four-disc (3CD, 1DVD) Deluxe Edition Box Set. The box set's superior audio and video include the two-disc 'Wings over America' album remastered at Abbey Road, a bonus audio disc recorded live at San Francisco's Cow Palace, a bonus DVD containing the rarely seen 75-minute television special 'Wings over the World' and the photo gallery montage entitled 'Photographer's Pass'.

Moreover, the Deluxe Edition Box Set contains four exquisitely rendered art books packaged with an incredible array of exclusive memorabilia, souvenirs, mementos, keepsakes and never-before-seen photos and art work from this historic tour.

The spectacular 110-page commemorative tour book beautifully recounts the behind-the-scenes drama through dozens of live performances and backstage photos along with new interviews and liner notes from eminent music journalist David Fricke.

The 'Wings over America' leatherette-bound 'Tour Itinerary' contains extravagant memorabilia including printed 8X10 glossy band photos, a backstage guest pass, facsimiles of the invitation to the infamous end-of-tour party at the Harold Lloyd Estate in Beverly Hills along with 'Wings over America' concert tickets, original album artwork, tour posters, set lists, lyrics, press materials and much more.

'Look!', the box set's warm and intimate book of Linda McCartney photography features Paul and the band in their everyday life as they made their way across the country in the spring of '76.

Lastly, the set contains 'The Ocean View' an extraordinary hardbound compendium of drawings and sketches by artist Humphrey Ocean that captures the band on tour in relaxed and revealing ways. A striking artistic achievement in and of itself, the audacious 'Wings over America' Deluxe Edition Box Set is a must have for any McCartney enthusiast.

'Rockshow' DVD Release

Second, for the first time a DVD will be released by Eagle Rock of the live concert film 'Rockshow' which was shot in 1976 when Paul McCartney & Wings undertook the epic 'Wings over the World' tour which was the largest-scale tour they would ever undertake as a band.

Packed with all the classic Wings hits - plus some of The Beatles' and Paul's solo classics - the film is released on both DVD and Blu-ray formats. Although filmed on this tour at the enormous Kingdome in Seattle, 'Rockshow', originally a cut down version of the concert, was not premiered until November 1980 in New York and April 1981 in London.

It was originally released on Betamax (later on laserdisc) but it's only now that the complete full length concert is being made available fully restored from the original 35mm film and with restored & remastered sound, including a 5.1 mix for the first time.

'Rockshow' Theatrical Release

And then third, but by no means least, Eagle Rock has partnered with distributors Specticast who are releasing the film theatrically worldwide for a 'one night only' event on May 15th (see here for more details: www.rockshowonscreen.com) meaning the film will be shown in more than 500 cinemas across the world!

The theatrical release features an exclusive introduction with Paul McCartney, but there will also be an exclusive VIP premiere screening of 'Rockshow', with Paul in attendance and introducing the film, at BAFTA on May 15, 2013.

For 'Wings across America' Paul brought with him one the most sophisticated and dazzling rock shows of the mid-Seventies (it was a time when nobody worried about extravagance or expense) and the band would eventually perform to more than 600,000 people at 31 shows in the US and Canada, ending with three mind-bending nights at The Forum in Los Angeles. It's no exaggeration to say that the demand that greeted Paul McCartney & Wings (Linda McCartney, Joe English, Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch) in the spring of 1976 as they embarked on what would become their one and only North American tour was overwhelming.

Having released four consecutive chart busting albums including 'Red Rose Speedway', 'Band on the Run', 'Venus and Mars' and 'Wings at the Speed of Sound' not to mention 1973's Academy Award-winning James Bond theme 'Live and Let Die' Paul's solo career was in full flight and having not performed in the States for 10 years either solo or with The Beatles, excitement had reached fever pitch.

Now Paul gives fans the chance to be able to immerse themselves in a concert that is destined to live forever.  "

Joey, is jb hard enough?

■"Winter" (unused from No Line On The Horizon) - this song appears in the Jim Sheridan film, Brothers
■"Every Breaking Wave" Bono told Rolling Stone this is a "surging anthem" and would be the first single. U2 played a rough version of it a few times during the European tour in 2010.
■"If I Could Live My Life Again" - Bono says this song is "inspired by the great Argentinian poet Jorge Luis Borges." Bono said he had just begun the song while speaking with author Michka Assayas in December, 2005. Their interview appears as the extra material in the paperback version of Bono in Conversation with Michka Assayas.
■"Love Is All We Have Left" - a song Bono named during his May, 2006, trip to Africa as one that he had recently written. "It’s like an old Broadway tune. I thought it was a Frank Sinatra song," Bono said.
■"North Star," a song from the How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sessions which included a guest organ appearance from Michael W. Smith. In this CCM article (PDF download), Smith describes the song as a tribute to Johnny Cash. Bono and Edge performed an acoustic version of this song a few times during the European 360 tour in 2010. It also featured briefly in the Summer 2011 film, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.
■"Mercy", one of the last songs to get cut from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, described in Blender magazine as "a six-and-a-half-minute outpouring of U2 at its most uninhibitedly U2-ish." U2 played it regularly during the last couple weeks of the European tour in 2010, and a live version with different lyrics appeared on the vinyl release, U2 Wide Awake In Europe in late 2010
■"Lead Me In The Way I Should Go" -- a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in this February, 2003, interview with Bono in Grammy Magazine
■"You Can't Give Away Your Heart" - a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in SPIN magazine

Macca rehearsing next to The Rolling Stones in LA

Paul's band has been tweeting about rehearsing at the same place the Rolling Stones are rehearsing.

Brian Ray tweeted:

"An insane few days of rehearsal with the pleasant distraction of the Rolling Stones rehearsing next door to us. Listening to the Rolling Stones rehearse next door, with the urgency of a local rock band looking to break out was fairly inspiring."

Paul Wix Wickens tweeted:

"Good rehearsal day. The Stones are rehearsing next door so went to visit my lovely friend Chuck Leavell. Surreal with Charlie Ronnie etc."

Paul McCartney sings unperformed Beatles tracks on tour

Sir Paul McCartney gave his first ever live rendition of a selection of classic Beatles tracks at the opening night of his world tour in Brazil.

The singer performed tracks such as Your Mother Should Know and Lovely Rita on the first night of his Out There tour in the city of Belo Horizonte.

Many later Beatles tracks were never performed live, after the band called an end to touring in 1966.

The Out There tour will include the US, Canada, Italy, Austria and Poland.

Sir Paul will play three concerts in Brazil this week - before continuing to Florida in the US in the middle of May.

Saturday's gig also saw Beatles' tracks Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite and All Together Now given their first live rendition.

Sir Paul sang Eight Days A Week live for only the second time. The Beatles played it just once in 1965.

The show, attended by 55,000 fans, saw the veteran star performing solo acoustic versions of Blackbird and Here Today on a platform some 20ft above the stage.  "

Joey, where can jb read about concert tickets selling like funnel cakes?

Talk about massive potential for growth, this New U2 tour is the tiny acorn that becomes the giant oak!

There was a lot of chatter this past week about U2 tours, albums, new songs and the like -- none of it official or confirmed, but so much that we thought a recap is in order. Keep in mind these are just rumors.

It began last Saturday, when Spanish radio station iCat FM spread a rumor that U2 was planning to do six concerts in each of six different cities in 2014, followed by a more substantial world tour in 2015. For what it's worth, our source on Twitter said that this station correctly reported things like U2's Barcelona concerts in 2009 and the U2 3D film before they were announced publicly.

Then there was another Spanish report saying that U2 has confirmed to Universal Music that its new album will be ready for release this year ("probably in October") and will do a world tour starting in March 2014.

Lastly, some friends of one our own staffers were visiting U2's HQ in Dublin a couple days ago when they bumped into Dallas Schoo. Dallas didn't know anything about the six-shows-in-six-cities tour rumor, but did confirm that the band is working on the album now with Danger Mouse. (Note: How much work they're doing at the moment is anyone's guess, considering that Bono is in the U.S. this weekend and Adam is in Brazil. Adam did a radio interview today with Ireland's Today FM mostly talking about the Walk In My Shoes campaign. He did say again that U2's intention is to have the album out before the end of the year.)

We'll do more rumor recaps in the future as needed.

Paul McCartney: Beatle Swarmed By Grasshoppers

Sir Paul McCartney is unfazed by a swam of insects during a concert in Brazil - some of which landed on him as he performed.
Thursday 09 May 2013

Sir Paul McCartney has swapped Beatles for grasshoppers - after a stage invasion by a swarm of the creatures.

...
The grasshoppers stayed on stage throughout the three-hour performance

The star managed to complete his performance despite being buzzed by a cloud of the insects as he played on stage in Brazil.

Animal-lover McCartney carried on for almost three hours in Goiania as he remained unfazed by the grasshoppers, which even landed on him during the show.

One remained on his shoulder for much of the show and the musician introduced his new pal to the 47,000-strong crowd as "Harold".

...
The former Beatle is travelling across six countries over six months

As he sang Hey Jude, McCartney turned to Harold as he sang the words "the movement you need is on your shoulder", adding "it certainly is now".

The star opened his Out There! tour in Brazil this week and is due to travel across six countries in the coming months.

His set lists have included rarely performed songs such as Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite, All Together Now and Eight Days A Week, which he has played live only once before - with The Beatles in 1965.

...
Get Back! McCartney managed to complete his performance

Joey, does jb dream in color?

The latest U2-related rumor has a the real football/football twist. As U2 Brazil reported, a Brazilian journalist writer named Lauro Jardim recently wrote that organizers of the 2014 World Cup are in negotiations with U2 to either perform at the opening or closing of next year's tournament.

Nothing else was mentioned in the report, although U2 Brazil also pointed out that Bono has promised ex-Brazilian president Lula da Silva to attend the opening ceremony with him.

The only other rumor that I've heard lately was actually the news that Steve Averill shared at the U2 Conference last weekend, when he said that he's about to meet with the band to talk about the new album and discuss design ideas. That meeting should be happening any day now, presumably in Dublin.

It's not a guarantee that U2 will actually put out an album this year, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for all of us hoping they do.
