Rare Paul McCartney Recording of 'A World Without Love' Surfaces
Song was taped at Peter Asher's family home in 1964

To the small but growing list of rare Beatles tapes that unexpectedly pop up, add one more: Paul McCartney's solo performance of "A World Without Love," the debut 1964 single by Peter and Gordon that hit Number One in both the U.S. and the U.K.

The only known McCartney version of the song, the tape – featuring McCartney singing and accompanying himself on acoustic guitar – was unearthed a few months ago by Peter Asher, half of Peter and Gordon and the brother of McCartney's girlfriend at the time, Jane Asher. In early 1964, McCartney was living in the Asher family home, sharing the top floor with Peter. "He had two tape machines and I had one – we were both into taping," Asher says. "Paul told me about the song and played it for me."

As Asher soon learned, nothing became of the song. "No one wanted it," he says. "John didn't like it or something." (The song has been credited to Lennon-McCartney, but McCartney apparently wrote it alone.) Billy J. Kramer, a Merseybeat singer of the time, also turned it down.

Not long after McCartney played "A World Without Love" for Asher (who taped it on a reel-to-reel deck), Peter and Gordon, the duo Asher formed with Gordon Waller, landed a record deal. Immediately, Asher asked McCartney if the duo could have the unfinished ballad. "Paul said, 'Absolutely,' but I had to nag him to write the bridge. It came several weeks later, just in time for the session." As a result, the tape in Asher's possession doesn't feature the song's bridge.

Asher discovered the recording (a DAT tape of the reel-to-reel original) in a storage space in L.A. Currently, there are no plans to release it, but Beatles fans can hear it in Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the '60s and Beyond, Asher's touring show, which plays shows in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Clear Lake, Iowa, over the next few weeks. Also on the tape, from the same bedroom recording, is McCartney singing an early version of "I'll Follow the Sun," with a quicker, friskier tempo than the ones the Beatles used for their recording of the song.

Joey, what's got jb on edge?

Larry Mullen Jr. told Dave Fanning that U2 will "hopefully" have its next album released by September, and it will be the album with Danger Mouse producing. He also suggested that U2 wants to release a second album "shortly afterwards," comparing it to when Zooropa was released less than a year after Achtung Baby.

Paul & James McCartney In The Studio - Father, son unite

Paul McCartney dropped into the studio recently - to work with his son, James McCartney.

The only son of Paul and Linda McCartney, James McCartney has a somewhat hidden musical career. An able musician in his own right, James McCartney contributed to 'Flaming Pie' and 'Driving Rain' by Paul McCartney in addition to working on 'Wide Prairie' by Linda McCartney.

Releasing a solo EP back in 2010, James McCartney has been carefully refining his craft ever since. Currently in the studio, the musician received a well known visitor a few days ago - his father, Paul McCartney.

Tweeting to fans, the former Beatle wrote: "Having fun in the studio with James on his new album".

Paul McCartney also tweeted a picture of the pair at the mixing desk - find it above.

Aside from music, the McCartney family have also been busy working on a new advert. The latest campaign for Linda McCartney Foods features the entire family in animated form, while Elvis Costello supplies

Sir Paul McCartney 'embarrassed' by the state of his old sheep

Sir Paul McCartney has confessed he is embarrassed when visitors see the state of his sheep - because they live to be so old on his farm.

The vegetarian musician keeps a flock at his property, but as he refuses to send them to an abattoir they are there until they die of old age.

In an interview for Radio 4's The Food Programme to be broadcast on Sunday, (12:30 pm GMT) (7:30 am ET/6:30 am CT) he points out that few people ever see elderly sheep and are surprised by their appearance.

"I live on a sheep farm so we shear the sheep, but they die of old age - and you know what, it's kind of embarrassing, because none of the other farms have got old sheep," he said.

"They're all gone before they're old - they just die like we do. It's life, it's death, it's what happens.

"We just give them a good life and I take the wool from them. but it can be embarrassing. you know, people say 'look at the state of your sheep' and I say yes they're very old and you know there is only one alternative - send them to the knacker's."

In an interview with presenter Sheila Dillon, Sir Paul talks about his vegetarian lifestyle and his desire to encourage more people to try eating less meat.

It comes as his late wife Linda's veggie food range is given a new push, with a TV ad campaign and new products. The ex-Beatle is also publicising the idea of taking a break from animal products with "meat-free Mondays".

In the programme, to be broadcast on Sunday at 12.30pm, he explains: "Basically what we're saying with the meat-free Monday campaign is that out of your seven days, you might think of one day being meat-free. we're not really pushing it too heavily. we're not saying you should go veggie, it's good for you.

"We're saying 'just try one day', and a lot of people say that's very do-able, a very accessible idea, and they enjoy it.

"There's all sorts of economic arguments that in a recession, meat tends to be the expensive bit of what you buy, so generally speaking, I think it's a good idea."

Joey, what's jb got on tap this fall?

Bono, The Edge and Adam were all on hand Thursday night as longtime friend Guggi opened a new art exhibit at Kerlin Gallery in Dublin. (Here's a bunch of photos.) But the newsworthy part of the night, for U2 fans at least, is what The Edge said to a writer from the Irish Sun about U2's next album:

"We're looking at having it out around the end of the summer."

That echoes what Larry Mullen said a couple weeks ago -- "I'd say we will be finished by the summer - and hopefully we will have something released by September." And Paul McGuinness made similar comments earlier this week.

Keep your fingers crossed...
