Paul McCartney's long and winding road to success

Paul McCartney is rubbing his eyes, literally and metaphorically. Literally, because when we met this week he had just flown back from playing a private gig in Las Vegas.

Metaphorically, because I put it to him that he should be rubbing his eyes over the fact that he still has a hectic touring schedule, is on TV showcasing his latest album, has gigs and an album planned for next year and will be headlining a benefit gig for Hurricane Sandy shortly.

And, his peers The Rolling Stones play in London over the weekend, with other big names from his era also prominently in action.

With McCartney, the enthusiasm and passion for his day job is undimmed.

"Yeah, I do rub my eyes at this," he admits.

"We all do. I didn't foresee it. The Beatles were on record as saying we didn't think it would last 10 years.

"But it kept on and kept on and it kept being good and we seemed to be the people who could do it.

"Now there is a great young generation of people who can also do it, but it tends to be that the people packing them in are the people who have the material, have hits and - I think that's important - songs that people know.

"I think they have stagecraft, they have an ability with an audience.

"I'm still cautious. I say, 'just put one show on sale'. I don't want to ever get too blasé.

"I don't want tickets not selling but then they ring me up and say Chicago's 40,000 seats sold out in six minutes, it's a record, and I didn't know it was even possible to sell out in six minutes, then you think of Madonna and Gaga and U2 and Coldplay and all the people who have played there and I just broke the record.

"What it does for me is that it's not that I'm being kind of cute about it, it's more the fact that when a big show like that sells out in six minutes, I then know when I go on to that stage that those people were that keen to buy a ticket that I know they are my friends and we can have a good time.

"It's a feeling that's not to be bettered. And I realise that in the early days half the reason for your nerves was you go on stage and think will they like me, will they like our songs?"

I'm talking to McCartney in his Soho Square office.

He's excited about the TV special, Live Kisses, in which he performed songs from his last album of standards Kisses on the Bottom, a mischievous title which is actually about signing kisses on a letter, a line from the opening number, "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter."

But we talk also (unusually for him) about his family, about John Lennon and The Beatles in the early days, about his happiness with his new(ish) wife Nancy, but also about the darker side to that era of innocence, the current clamour over Jimmy Savile, child abuse and inappropriate sexual relationships with adolescent girls in the sixties and seventies.

Few rock stars have made any comment at all, though some must be more than a little worried.

The biggest star of them all has said nothing until now. And, of course, he knew Jimmy Savile well, as Savile used to compere The Beatles' Christmas shows, and, well before their worldwide fame, travelled with them.

"[In] that postwar boom, girls and guys, it was a much more open scene free love and the Pill had just come in, so it was a completely different scene," McCartney said.

"The other aspect, of course, is that we, though not quite Jimmy, we were of the age of the girls, we were all young. So if you're now talking about a 17, 18-year-old boy with a 15-year-old girl, we all knew that was illegal.

"We knew it and it was like, 'NO'.

"But the closer we were in age, of course, the less it seemed to matter. We knew with under-16s it was illegal, so we didn't do it."

"What clean-living, law-abiding Beatles you were," I say. But he is adamant.

"We tried to make sure. We couldn't always be sure but there was a definite no-no involved in under-age kids. Hey, listen, we didn't have to worry. There were plenty of over-16-year-olds."

He has always had an enormously strong sense of family, and it strikes me that he has reached a point in his life where, at 70, still looking remarkably youthful, still genuinely with a twinkle in the eye and that seductive half-smile, with all the rifts between him and his former bandmates ancient history and only good feelings remaining, he is not just conspicuously comfortable with himself, but must be particularly happy.

"Yeah, thank you, I am. I'm a very lucky guy. I have a very lovely wife, I've got a young daughter who is very lovely."

Macca on SNL Last Evening

http://consequenceofsound.net/2012/12/paul-mccartney-and-nirvana-on-saturday-nig...

" December 16, 2012 -- Daily Mail (UK)

Smells Like Septuagenarian Spirit! Sir Paul McCartney joins Nirvana again for SNL appearance... and raises the bar yet again

More than a few people were skeptical when it was announced that Sir Paul McCartney was to perform with Nirvana at Wednesday's 12-12-12 concert... they shouldn't have been.

The Beatle legend rejoined the ' 90s icons for a second jam on Saturday night's Saturday Night Live and was on better form than ever as he helmed the fledgling band's performance of Cut Me Some Slack, a delicious marriage of McCartney melody and Nirvana's hard, driven rock.

Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love whined, of course, but the idea that her late husband - a massive Beatles fan - would have objected to the union is ludicrous.

What's more, the 70-year-old legend and Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and unofficial member, Pat Smear, have created something special and unique with the new blistering track.

'Cut Me Some Slack' is an apt title for the savvy McCartney, who was criticised for his under par performance of Hey Jude at the opening ceremony, as is the grungey change of direction.

He prepared the crowd at Sandy for it's searing tempo by reminding them that he could rock with (and before) the best of them by opening his set with the rip-roaring Helter Skelter from 1968's White Album.

It was mercurial Paul who was the driving force behind the Beatles most eclectic long-player so it's unsurprising he decided to mix things up again after the backlash to his greatest thumbs aloft anthem.

And it's worked; strumming on his cigar box guitar in simple jeans and grey shirt - Macca raised the roof at the New York studios as Dave Grohl worked himself into a sweat with his merciless beat.

Despite Courtney's lack of enthusiasm for the collaboration, the McCartney fitted in to the grunge band with ease even on their first high profile outing.

Dave took his seat behind the drum set while Paul sang, the collaboration will be included on the soundtrack of Grohl's new film 'Sound City Movie.'

During an evening that included performances by Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Kanye West, the duet stood out as a highlight, as the two musical powerhouses joined forces.

McCartney recently admitted that it suddenly dawned on him that he was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion while 'jamming' with some people recently.

'I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together,' he told The Sun.

'I said, "Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?" And somebody whispered to me, "That's Nirvana. You're Kurt."

December 16, 2012 -- Los Angeles Times

Paul McCartney, Nirvana members jam at '121212' concert

The reunion of the three surviving members of Nirvana with guest singer Paul McCartney for the "121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief" brought the first live performance of a new song they'd created together while jamming recently, the ex-Beatle said on introducing "Cut Me Some Slack" during their time together at Madison Square Garden.

"Recently, some guys asked me to go jam with them," McCartney told the crowd. "So I showed up, like you do, ready to jam. And in the middle of it, these guys kept going, 'We haven't played together for years.' So the penny finally dropped, I finally understood I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion."

The new song, not surprisingly, is a driving rock workout with a heavy backbeat full of distortion-drenched electric guitar work by Pat Smear in tandem with stinging slide guitar leads by McCartney, a sonic assault not far removed from one of the Beatles' signature hard rockers, "Helter Skelter."

A bit more surprisingly, McCartney's instrumental contribution came on a humble cigar-box guitar he played with a slide. The guitar, as it happens, was made here in the Southland by cigar-box guitar aficionado Matty Baratto, whose Cigfiddle creations were featured in a story I wrote last year about a modern-day revival of interest in the homespuncigar-box guitar tradition. (Webmaster's Note: Johnny Depp gave Paul the cigar-box guitar)

Baratto's instruments have made their way into other famous hands, including those of Keith Richards and Johnny Depp, and present-day cigar-box players also include ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and rocker Steve Miller.

After devoting himself on his recent "Kisses on the Bottom" album to songs largely drawn from the pre-rock era of classic pop, perhaps McCartney's next project will be "The Cigar Box Collection."

With his own  band, McCartney dipped into the Beatles' catalog for "Helter Skelter," "Blackbird" and "I've Got a Feeling" and turned to his solo repertoire for "Live and Let Die," "Let Me Roll It" and "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five." He also included "My Valentine," an original from the "Kisses" album that featured Diana Krall.

Here's the video from the live (121212 Concert) performance of "Cut Me Some Slack":

I continue to suffer from flank pain, chronic IBS, benign fasciculation, and other stress related conditions. This includes rectal irritation, burning sensations upon urination, swollen glands, loose skin, and a very painful bile duct. Lately, this stress has caused scalp twitching, which I fear is a symptom of a major, terminal ailment. My staff of physicians has recently informed me that my prostate is in fine shape, small and smooth, but I fear they have not performed an adequate amount of tests to confirm their diagnosis. Combine this with my fear of ALS, obsessive compulsive behavior, and heightened level of paranoia.

Saturday Night Live re-runs Paul Christmas show

Yesterday (December 22nd) SNL ran a 30-minute Prime Time (10 pm ET) rerun (edited) from their Christmas show aired December 15th, that featured Paul.

The "Monty sketch" and "Wonderful Christmastime" were shown in the rebroadcast taken from rehearsal footage -- none of which was seen in the original live broadcast.

Both the sketch and "Wonderful Christmastime" were better than the live broadcast.

I do Ron Ron - When Ronnie wed Sally
- Rolling Stone marries bride 31yrs younger than him

Rocker Ronnie Wood gets wed for the third time yesterday, to a bride 31 years his junior.

The Rolling Stone, 65, and 34-year-old theatre producer Sally Humphreys said "I do" in a ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel.

Ronnie declared: "I'm feeling great".

The guitarist married Sally in a low-key ceremony attended by star pals.

Rock royalty ... Paul McCartney with wife Nancy Shevell

She loves you ... Macca and Nancy later last night

And Ronnie, whose band's compilation album GRRR! was released last month, looked thrilled as the pair posed for snaps.

The beaming rocker, who wore a dark suit, black tie and pink socks, said: "It was excellent, so great. Brilliant." He sported a white buttonhole flower in his lapel and constantly clutched a cigarette pack.

Asked where they were going on honeymoon, he added: "Haven't decided yet."

Meanwhile 34-year-old Sally had looked stunning in a white figure-hugging, floor-length wedding frock. She changed to a shorter dress and beige coat before they left.

She had proudly announced of her bridal frock: "It's my mother's dress."

The star's eldest son Jesse, 36 - from his first marriage to model Krissy Findlay - was there with Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, who is expecting his child.

Sally's musician parents Alison, 63, and Colin, 66, also joined the 50-strong wedding party who crammed into the hotel's penthouse suite.

A source told The Sun: "Ronnie and Sally have been inseparable for months and decided to tie the knot.

"They didn't want to waste any time so organised the wedding pretty swiftly."

YOKO ONO TALKS ABOUT BEATLES BREAKUP IN NEWLY DISCOVERED INTERVIEW
by Dave Lifton

...
Evening Standard, Getty Images

Ever since the Beatles‘ split in 1970, Yoko Ono has been, quite unfairly, assigned a good deal of the blame. However, a long-lost interview from 1987 finds John Lennon‘s widow telling the real reasons for their breakup.

“The Beatles were getting very independent,” she told record executive Joe Smith (via the Huffington Post). “John, in fact, was not the first who wanted to leave The Beatles. [We saw] Ringo [Starr] one night with Maureen [Starkey Tigrett], and he came to John and me and said he wanted to leave. George [Harrison] was next, and then John.”

Although Ono credited Paul McCartney as the one who, by this time, was still a believer that the Beatles should remain a group, she believed that McCartney had his own agenda. In October, McCartney said that Ono’s influence on Lennon did not break up the group, and that his former partner couldn’t have written ‘Imagine’ without her.

“Paul was the only one trying to hold The Beatles together,” she continued. “But the other three thought Paul would hold the Beatles together as his band. They were getting to be like Paul’s band, which they didn’t like.”

The interview with Smith, who ran both Elektra and Capitol Records during a long career in the music business, surfaced as part of a series of interviews he conducted between 1986 and 1988 with more than 225 rock, pop and jazz legends, including Tony Bennett, Mick Jagger, Burt Bacharach, Little Richard and Aerosmith. This summer, Smith donated the entire collection to the Library of Congress, and many of the interviews can be streamed on their website.

Ronnie Wood Reveals that Paul McCartney Served as Best Man at His Wedding Along with Rod Stewart

Some interesting new details have emerged about Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood's recent wedding to theater producer Sally Humphreys. Previous reports revealed that Paul McCartney was among the attendees at the December 21 ceremony, but now Wood has told U.K. magazine Hello! that The Beatles legend also served as one of his two best men - along with his old Faces band mate Rod Stewart.

Ronnie said of his two pals, "They have always been very supportive of me and Sally." In addition, the 65-year-old rocker recalled that when he and Humphreys attended McCartney's 2011 wedding to Nancy Shevell, "Paul was saying at the time, 'Wow, this is wonderful, you two make a great couple.'"

About the wedding itself, Wood told Hello!, "It was a wonderful day," adding that he said to the nuptials' attendees, "I wish I'd met Sal earlier. I can't think of another girl more suited to me."

Ronnie's three biological children - his 36-year-old son Jesse, 34-year-old daughter Leah and 29-year-old son Tyrone - all were on hand for the ceremony. Regarding how his kids felt about him getting remarried, Wood said, "They are happy to see their dad happy."

" January 2, 2013 -- The List (UK)

Fast writer Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney feels "lucky" because he and Beatles bandmate John Lennon could write hit songs in just a few hours.

The two musicians were behind most of The Beatles hits, and Paul says during their 60s heyday they could write a hit in a matter of hours.

He said: "I'm lucky, because the way I used to write with John, it was normally a three-hour affair. It was never much longer than that.

"It depends how lucky you get. If you're lucky, it's pure inspiration. Those are great, because they just sort of fall out and you can't believe you're writing it so easily. Then some of them, it's 50-50, where you get a sense that you're having to work at it."

Paul says one of his most famous tracks, 'Yesterday', came to him in a dream, but he walked around with the melody in his head for a number of weeks before writing the song properly as he was convinced it was someone else's track.

He added: "There were oddities such as 'Yesterday', which I dreamt. I thought I was dreaming someone else's song. I wrote the words on a car journey while on holiday in Portugal, during a three-hour drive from Lisbon to the south coast, where I was staying in [The Shadows'] Bruce Welch's flat.

"Bruce, not so long ago, said to me, 'The first thing you said was, 'Have you got a guitar?' So there I was singing it, and he couldn't believe it. So he was the first person in the world to hear Yesterday."

"Looking for the perfect pop song. Edge is in denial of his genius. I'm a little too sure of my own. Larry is suspicious of both and Adam sees merit in both. They're unbelievable. They really want it, though, I will say that. As a band there's no sense of entitlement. I think they're very aware that U2's gotta do something very special to have a reason to exist right now, so that's what we're doing. We're song writing -- you know the process. But it's -- they're amazing men. They really are extraordinary. They really, really want it."

"There won't be a U2 album unless there's something really special. You just gotta go to that place. You gotta dig a deep well and see what you can pull up. We've been through many songs and there's some great stuff. I would say we had the best three weeks in the studio that we've had since, like, 1979. Three weeks is all it should take...."

Stella McCartney unveils Autumn 2013 preview at fashionable New York show
British fashion designer has the likes of Anna Wintour and Kim Cattrall out in force as she shows upcoming collection

Stella McCartney had the fashion pack out in full force as she previewed her Autumn 2013 collection in New York January 8th.

The likes of US Vogue editor Anna Wintour and a whole host of the stylish Hollywood elite were on the guest list - including Kim Cattrall, Mary Louise Parker and Alec Baldwin - as the British fashion designer treated them all to a glimpse of her upcoming collection.

Stella clearly meant business on the night too; donning a grey, utility chic jumpsuit for the occasion - which featured a drop waist, tailored trousers and chain detailing at the pockets.

Of course that wasn't all the fashion she was showing off though, as she treated her guests to a whole host of stylish new treats - including chunky perspex jewellery, furry bags, snakeskin clutches and monochrome looks.

Black and white was a clear trend for Stella's Autumn drop, with models strutting around the bash - and the flowing champagne tower - in a sea of monochromatic designs.

Billowing, striped trousers, optical illusion blouses and a structured mini-dress with a balloon-shaped skirt all made up the black and white trend, with androgynous loafers offsetting the bold look.

The trend for masculine fashion was alive and kicking too, with over-sized pocketed camel coats all nodding to the trend - along with similar tweed styles and capes.

The take on stripes continued with one model donning a maxi, long-sleeved red dress - featuring bold red stripes that graduated in different tones and shades.

Elsewhere, stripes featured on a chic blue shaded jumpsuit - with a split neckline and tapered trousers.

Snakeskin featured heavily when it came to footwear and accessories, with platform court stilettos and chic clutches and evening bags featuring the print, with chain-detailing straps.

Colour-pop - proving to be a huge trend for spring summer 2013 - made Stella's Autumn line, yet in darker shades of the hue - with androgynous loafers and platform stilettos in bright red all being displayed.

Stella's hotly-anticipated optical line was also shown on the night, with models donning oversized black and tortoiseshell frames.

Big, bold jewels were also high up on Stella's agenda, with a heart-shaped tortoiseshell choker and matching bangle catching our fashion eye.

And we'll most certainly be lusting after her black and while-swirled print perspex clutch, which is the perfect tote to be seen with FROW at Fashion Week.  "
