Sir Paul McCartney and Barbara Windsor bid farewell to Beatles movie star Victor Spinetti as they attend memorial service

Having developed a good friendship after working together on three Beatles films, Sir Paul McCartney led a star studded attendance at the memorial service of actor Victor Spinetti.

Carry On actor Barbara Windsor, who was one of the final people to see Victor before he passed, was also at the service on Tuesday afternoon.

Sir Paul and Barbara arrived separately at St Paul's Church, in Covent Garden, London, and both dressed formally in traditional black.

While the Beatles singer wore a smart black suit with an overcoat and sunglasses, Barbara opted for a black two piece with pink pinstripes and a matching blouse.

The ex-EastEnders star was greeted warmly by fans as they surrounded her and asked for autographs.

Sir Paul was also received well and gave a wave to the waiting crowds as he got out of his car.

Other notable attendees included Neil and Christine Hamilton, and stage stars Michael Ball and Christopher Biggins.

Veteran actor Victor, who starred in all three Beatles films, died at the age of 82 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The Welsh star, who also appeared in a string of acclaimed movies as well as taking roles in the West End and on Broadway, died after a fight with pancreatic cancer.

Close friend Barbara Windsor, on whose Radio 2 show he made a recent appearance, was one of his final visitors before his death at a hospice in Monmouth.

Spinetti's agent, Barry Burnett, said: 'He had cancer for a year, but he was very cheerful to the end. I spoke to him on Friday and he was talking about his plans and everything.'

The versatile actor was able to easily turn his hand from serious classical roles to comedy performances and roles in sitcoms.

He was also known as successful stage director, poetry writer and randomly became known for his appearances in a Jaffa Cake ad campaign as the Mad Jaffa Cake Eater.

However, for many fans, Spinetti will always be known for his roles in The Beatles' three live action films - A Hard Day's Night, Help! and Magical Mystery Tour.

It was his close friendship with the Beatles at the height of their fame which put him on the map.

Spinetti was born in Cwm, Wales, on September 2, 1933, attended Monmouth School and the Cardiff College of Music and Drama of which in later life he became a fellow.

However, his working life began as a waiter and factory worker before he sprang to prominence in three Beatles films of the 1960s: Hard Day's Night, Help! and Magical Mystery Tour.

The late George Harrison once said to him: 'You have got to be in all our films. If you are not in them, my mum won't come and see them because she fancies you."

During his versatile career, Spinetti appeared in more than 30 films, including Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew, Under Milk Wood, with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Voyage of the Damned, The Return of the Pink Panther, and The Krays.

His work with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop produced many memorable performances including Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be and Oh! What a Lovely War, which transferred to New York, and for which he won a Tony Award for his role as an obnoxious drill sergeant.

His West End appearances included Expresso Bongo, Candide, Cat Among the Pigeons and Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang, He also played the principal male character in the feminist play, Vagina Rex.

He also appeared on Broadway in The Hostage and The Philanthropist. With the Royal Shakespeare Company he appeared as Lord Foppington in The Relapse and as the archbishop in Richard III.

Spinetti also co-authored John Lennon In His Own Write, which he directed at the National Theatre. He also directed productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair.

His many TV appearances included Take My Wife, and the sitcom An Actor's Life For Me.

Spinetti also wrote poetry, notably Watchers Along The Mall, and prose which have appeared in several publications.

His memoirs, Victor Spinetti Up Front, was filled with anecdotes, including the claim that Princess Margaret was instrumental in securing the necessary censor permission for the first run of Oh! What a Lovely War.  "

Bono makes an appearance in BB King - The Life Of Riley, a new documentary about the legendary blues singer/guitarist that's showing soon in UK theaters. Morgan Freeman narrates the film, and Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana are among the other artists appearing. The official website says the movie will be in UK theaters beginning on October 15th.

The Guardian has a short clip online with part of Bono's appearance, and the film's trailer has a bit more of Bono's comments along with some scenes from Rattle And Hum. Enjoy!

The Beatles must be in the Genes

The Gallagher brothers grew up idolising The Beatles.

And now Liam's lad Gene is following in their footsteps after meeting Sir Paul McCartney.

Beady Eye frontman Liam kept his son up late on a school night to watch a screening of the remastered Magical Mystery Tour film in London on Tuesday.

They joined Macca, Liam's Beady Eye band-mates and David Walliams at the BFI Southbank.

The film, made by and starring The Beatles, had a poor reception when it debuted on TV in 1967 but you can see its influence in modern videos.

The music, including I Am The Walrus and Blue Jay Way, is not bad either.

Also in attendance was Beatles producer George Martin's son Giles, who tweeted: "First screening of Magical Mystery Tour, I sat next to Paul. It sounded fantastic well I didn't get prodded so I think we got away with it!"

A project spearheaded by Paul McCartney, Magical Mystery Tour was a TV movie that largely baffled audiences on its first screening in December 1967. The newly restored film, alongside a new documentary, titled Arena: The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour Revisited, featuring previously unseen footage of the band, will show on BBC2 this weekend (October 6).

As a teaser to the documentary, The Space, a digital arts service from the Arts Council in conjunction with the BBC, have put some extra footage of the 1967 film shoot online. In one piece, The Beatles visit a fish and chip shop in Taunton.  "

" Jobless rate falls to 7.8 percent in September "

" The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent last month, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years. The rate declined because more people found work, a trend that could have an impact on undecided voters in the final month before the presidential election.

The Labor Department said Friday that employers added 114,000 jobs in September. The economy also created 86,000 more jobs in July and August than first estimated. Wages rose in September and more people started looking for work.

The revisions show employers added 146,000 jobs per month from July through September, up from 67,000 in the previous three months. The unemployment rate fell from 8.1 percent in August, matching its level in January 2009 when President Obama took office.

The decline could help Obama, who is coming off a disappointing debate performance against GOP challenger Mitt Romney.

Stock futures rose modestly after the report. Dow Jones industrial average futures, up 30 points just before the report came out, were up 45 points after it was released.

The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note climbed to 1.73 percent from 1.68 percent just before the report, a sign that investors were more willing to embrace risk and moving money from bonds into stocks.

The job market has been improving, sluggishly but steadily. Jobs have been added for 24 straight months. There are now 325,000 more than when Obama took office.

The September gains were led by the health care industry, which added 44,000 jobs -- the most since February. Transportation and warehousing also showed large gains. The revisions showed that governments actually added 63,000 jobs in July and August, compared with earlier estimates that showed losses.

Still, many of the jobs added last month were part time. The number of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6 million.  "

50 Years Ago Today: The Beatles Released Their Debut Single, 'Love Me Do'
The surprise hit helped kick-start Beatlemania

Exactly 50 years ago today, on October 5th, 1962, a new single titled "Love Me Do" hit record stores all over England. It was the debut 45 by the Beatles – though, at the time, that name didn't mean much to many English fans outside of Manchester and their native Liverpool. (The band's frequent performances at the Star Club in Hamburg had already won them a devoted following in Germany, however.) The song was a surprise hit, rising to Number 17 on one of the many weekly charts around the U.K., a strong enough showing to convince EMI they had made a smart bet in signing the Beatles.

Paul McCartney began writing "Love Me Do" a few years earlier, in 1958, when he was playing hooky from school at age 16. Soon afterwards, he sat down with John Lennon to flesh it out. "It was completely co-written," McCartney later said. "It might have been my original idea, but some of them really were 50-50s, and I think that one was. It was just Lennon and McCartney sitting down without either of us having a particularly original idea."

Lennon had a slightly different recollection of events. "'Love Me Do' is Paul's song," he said in 1980. "Let me think. I might have helped with the middle eight, but I couldn't swear to it. I do know he had the song around, in Hamburg, even, way, way before we were songwriters."

The 100 Greatest Beatles Songs

The Beatles' setlist during the Hamburg days consisted entirely of covers by Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley and other American rock pioneers.  They eventually found the courage to work in their own material, beginning with "Love Me Do." The track worked surprisingly well in their set, and when they first visited Abbey Road studios on June 6th, 1962 for an audition with EMI, they played "Love Me Do" alongside "Besame Mucho," "P.S. I Love You" and "Ask Me Why."

Pete Best was still drumming for the Beatles at the time, but producer George Martin was unhappy with his playing. "George Martin was very used to drummers being very 'in time' because all the big-band session drummers he used had a great sense of time," McCartney said. "Now, our Liverpool drummers had a sense of spirit, emotion, economy even, but not a deadly sense of time. George took us to one side and said, 'I'm really unhappy with the drummer. Would you consider changing him?' We said, 'No, we can't!' It was one of those terrible things you go through as kids. Can we betray him? No. but our careers were on the line. Maybe they were going to cancel our contract."

Everybody in the band has a slightly different account of exactly why Pete Best was let go from the band two months after that first EMI session, but when the band returned to Abbey Road on September 4th, 1962 new drummer Ringo Starr was behind the kit.  They ran through "Love Me Do" around 15 times, but Martin still wasn't happy with the drum sound. When they returned for another go-round on September 11th, session drummer Andy White was brought into the studio, much to Ringo's shock and horror.

"I was devastated that George had his doubts about me," Ringo says in The Beatles Anthology. "I came down ready to roll and heard, 'We've got a professional drummer.' He has apologized several times since, has old George, but it was devastating – I hated the bugger for years. I still don't let him off the hook!" Martin let Ringo play tambourine during the recording of the song that day, but it hardly made up for the slight.

Ringo was vindicated when the "Love Me Do" single came out on October 5th, 1962 – EMI wound up using one of the takes with him on drums. When they re-released it the following April, however, one of the Andy White takes was used. That was also the version that subsequently wound up on Please Please Me in England and Introducing . . . The Beatles in America.

Everyone in the band was shocked when "Love Me Do" began climbing the British charts in late 1962. "First hearing 'Love Me Do' on the radio sent me shivery all over," George Harrison said. "It was the best buzz of all-time…After having got to 17, I don't recall what happened to it. It probably went away and died, but what it meant was the next time we went to EMI they were more friendly: 'Oh, hello, lads. Come in.'"

In early January 1963, the band released their second single, "Please Please Me." It shot to the top of the charts all over England, kick-starting Beatlemania throughout the country. It would be another long year, however, until the madness spread to America.

Paul McCartney's Liverpool home to feature in new Beatles 50th anniversary documentary

The childhood home of Paul McCartney will be among the places featured in a new documentary marking the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' Love Me Do single.

It is believed to be the first time cameras have been allowed to film inside the small council house in Forthlin Road, Allerton, where Paul grew up.

The 60-minute documentary also features interviews with friends and associates of The Beatles from the year 1962, including Iris Caldwell, who was Paul's girlfriend of the time and may be the person to whom Love Me Do was addressed.

Presenter Stuart Maconie is filmed in the garden and the front room of the Forthlin Road property - now owned by the National Trust - and also visits other landmarks such as the Cavern Club.

He said: "Paul's house in Forthlin Road may appear small by modern standards, but in 1962 it would have represented a new start for people coming from slum conditions.

"It would have been clean, warm, and well-lit, all the things its occupants wouldn't have had before.

"Council houses were means-tested, so the more important your job, the better house you got. Because Paul's mum was a midwife, theirs was one of the smartest houses in the street."

The Forthlin Road house was chosen for the programme, Stuart said, because it was where Paul wrote the bulk of Love Me Do while playing truant from school.

"It's amazing to think that the history of the world was changed by what started in these little rooms," he added.

The Beatles' First Single 'Love Me Do' Turns 50

Fifty years ago today, Beatlemania began to stir when the group's first single was released in the U.K. The A side was "Love Me Do," the flip side "P.S. I Love You."

"Love Me Do" was sketched out by Paul McCartney four years earlier when he was 16 years old, according to the late Ian MacDonald's invaluable "Revolution in the Head," a comprehensive guide to The Beatles' recordings. (It's believed John Lennon wrote the eight-bar middle section.) The version released on October 5, 1962, featured the four Beatles and was recorded at Abbey Road on September 4. An earlier version, with Pete Best on drums, was recorded in June '62; it can be heard on "Anthology 1" by the Beatles, released in '95. A week after the September 4 sessions, producer George Martin added session drummer Andy White to the group to re-cut the track, relegating Ringo Starr to tambourine a slight that irked Starr for decades; he released his own version of the song on his '98 album "Vertical Man." The White version opened the second side of the Beatles's U.K. debut album "Please Please Me."

Lennon played harmonica on all versions of "Love Me Do" and according to MacDonald, its lack of blue notes gave it "the blunt vitality of working-class Northernness" that appealed to some Brits. The song has but three chords, with Lennon's middle eight shifting to D before the song returns to its repeated C to G pattern. Though the song topped out at number 17 on the British pop charts, it serves as a telling introduction to the Beatles: raw, sparse and seemingly spontaneous with elements of rock and pop, the recording has no precedent in the then-current U.K. pop scene; and it features the voice of McCartney, who in short time would become one of the great vocalists in rock history.

Written by McCartney in '61, "P.S. I Love You" was recorded at the September 11 sessions with White playing drums and Starr maracas. A more sophisticated tune that "Love Me Do," it has the kind of chordal structure for which the group would soon be famous including the C# passing chord between the G and D in the verses and the deceptive cadence in the form of the Bb under the last word of the title. The blend of Lennon's acoustic guitar and George Harrison's electric guitar give the rhythm its uplifting texture.

It's said the group felt "P.S. I Love You" might've been a stronger debut single than "Love Me Do," but Martin was aware of a song of the same name that was a hit for Rudy Vallée in '34 and was covered later by Frank Sinatra suggesting he thought the Beatles might find an adult audience in addition to teens.

The two-sided single received little in the way of promotional support from EMI, the group's label, though the A side was played on Radio Luxembourg. Hearing "Love Me Do" on the radio, said Harrison, "sent me shivery all over. It was the best buzz of all time." With their growing strong fan base in England thanks to their live performances, the Beatles were on their way: They returned to Abbey Road in late November to cut Lennon's "Please Please Me." Afterwards, Martin told them: "Congratulations, gentlemen. You've just made your first number-one hit." And he was right. "

" Why Israel May Go It Alone "

" There are two clocks ticking, one in Washington . . . and one in Israel . . . neither of them in sync.”

" On the face of it, these words appear as if they were lifted from any report over the past year characterizing the discord over American and Israeli efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear program. But in fact they were spoken forty-five years ago by Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban on the eve of the Six Day War.

Eban had just returned to Jerusalem from Washington, where he was anxiously pressing the Lyndon Johnson administration to provide U.S. guarantees for Israel’s security in the event that Egypt attacked. Previously confident that America would have Israel’s back in the event of renewed warfare, Eban was now despondent at the likelihood that Israel would be forced to face the combined Arab armies alone, again.

For two weeks, Gamal Abdel Nasser had been building up his forces in the Sinai Peninsula to the point where they posed a credible threat to the young Jewish state’s existence. Now, Nasser had dismissed UN peacekeepers from the Egyptian-Israeli border and closed the Straits of Tiran, cutting off Israel’s vital access to the Red Sea, through which it imported a majority of its energy supplies. Nasser had provided Israel with casus belli and then proclaimed that “if war comes it will be total and the objective will be Israel’s destruction.”

“They will condemn us . . . and we ( The Jews ) will survive.”

Joey, what does JB think of the recently published letters from noted curmudgeon John Lennon to his old pals Paul & Linda, George Martin, and others?

"I was reading your letter and wondering
what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote
it. I resisted looking at the last page to find
out -- I kept thinking who is it … What the
hell -- it's Linda!"

J-j-j-j-j-joey....what does JB think of THIS:

PaulMcCartneyhopingtorecordunfinishedJohnLennontrack

Sir Paul McCartney has revealed he is hoping to enter
the studio with Jeff Lynne in a bid to finally complete a
John Lennon track which first resurfaced during work
on The Beatles‘ Anthology documentary series in the
mid-Nineties.

Speaking on the new Jeff Lynne documentary Mr. Blue Sky,
McCartney reveals he, Lynne and George Harrison had been
working on a second John Lennon-written song along side the
eventual single ‘Free As a Bird‘, but didn’t finish re-recording
the track as George thought it was ‘rubbish’.

...
“There was another one that we started working on but George went off it,”
McCartney remembers. “We were like, ‘No George, this is John’. He said,
‘It’s still rubbish!’. ‘Ok then’. So that one is still lingering around. I’m gonna
nick in with Jeff and do it, finish it, one of these days.”

...
JEFF LYNNE??? Fook that twat!

‘Free As a Bird’ was officially released in 1995 to promote the Anthology films,
and peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart.

WHY, Young Joseph, WHY????

...
Jeff Lynne was George's friend. You'd
think that, since George is sadly dead,
we'd at least be spared of having to put
up with Jeff Lynne on this, especially since
George didn't want to do it. He made
everything they did together sound
like ELO.

...
And who's playing drums?

Joey, could you wish jb a sweet Shmini Atzeret today? Thanks!

Shemini Atzeret (שמיני עצרת - "the Eighth [day] of Assembly"; Ashkenazic pron. shmini-atseres) is a Jewish holiday. It is celebrated on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (first month of calendar). In the Diaspora, an additional day is celebrated, the second day being separately referred to as Simchat Torah. In Israel and Reform Judaism, the holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined into a single day and the names are used interchangeably.

" October 9, 2012 -- Contact Music (UK)

Paul McCartney keen to rework on John Lennon track

Beatles legend Paul McCartney says he is keen to rework another lost John Lennon track with producer Jeff Lynne.

McCartney, 70, is plotting to return to the studio with Lynne and complete work on another Lennon tune which he and his Beatles bandmates gave up on while recording 'Free As A Bird' for the group's anthology project, reported Contactmusic.

The rocker has fond memories of working with Lynne on the Beatles best of, but he regrets not challenging the late George Harrison over a forgotten track that featured Lennon`s vocals.

"There was another one (track) that we started working on but George went off it... We were like, 'No George, this is John'. He said, 'It's still rubbish!' 'Ok then'.

"So that one (track) is still lingering around. I'm gonna nick in with Jeff and do it, finish it, one of these days," he said.   "
