Sir Paul McCartney's battle to free elephant

Paul McCartney has helped to free an elephant kept chained in the dark for seven years.

The Beatles legend and actress Pamela Stephenson, 62, pleaded with India's forest minister Dr Patangrao Kadam for the animal's release.

Yesterday it was revealed that 13-year-old Sunder will be rescued from his shed hell in India's Maharashtra district and moved to a wildlife centre.

Angry Sir Paul, 70, had written: "I have seen photographs of young Sunder, the elephant kept alone in a shed at a temple and put in chains with spikes.

"Years of his life have been ruined by keeping him and abusing him in this way.

"Enough is enough. Get Sunder out."

Mimi Bekhechi, of animal welfare campaigners PETA, said yesterday: "We are grateful to the forest minister for agreeing to liberate Sunder.  "

" Either Israel is engaged in the most elaborate ruse since the Trojan Horse, or it is on the cusp of a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

What’s alarming is not just Iran’s increasing store of uranium or the growing sophistication of its rocketry. It’s also the increasingly menacing annihilationist threats emanating from Iran’s leaders.

Israel’s existence is “an insult to all humanity,” says President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. “Anyone who loves freedom and justice must strive for the annihilation of the Zionist regime.” Explains the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Israel is “a true cancer tumor on this region that should be cut off.”

Everyone wants to avoid military action, surely the Israelis above all. They can expect a massive counterattack from Iran, 50,000 rockets launched from Lebanon, Islamic Jihad firing from Gaza and worldwide terror against Jewish and Israeli targets, as happened last month in Bulgaria.

Yet Israel will not sit idly by in the face of the most virulent genocidal threats since Nazi Germany. The result then was 6 million murdered Jews. There are 6 million living in Israel today.

Time is short. Last-ditch negotiations in Istanbul, Baghdad and Moscow have failed abjectly. The Iranians are contemptuously playing with the process. The strategy is to delay until they get the bomb.

What to do? The sagest advice comes from Anthony Cordesman, military analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, hardheaded realist and a believer that “multilateralism and soft power must still be the rule and not the exception.”

He may have found his exception. “There are times when the best way to prevent war is to clearly communicate that it is possible,” he argues.

Today, the threat of a U.S. attack is not taken seriously. Not by the region. Not by Iran. Not by the Israelis, who therefore increasingly feel forced to act before Israel’s more limited munitions — far less powerful and effective than those in the U.S. arsenal — can no longer penetrate Iran’s ever-hardening facilities.

Cordesman therefore proposes threefold action.

(1) “Clear U.S. redlines.”

It’s time to end the ambiguity about American intentions. Establish real limits on negotiations — to convince Iran that the only alternative to a deal is pre-emptive strikes, and to convince Israel to stay its hand.

(2) “Make it clear to Iran that it has no successful options.”

Either their program must be abandoned in a negotiated deal (see No. 1 above) on generous terms from the West (see No. 3 below), or their facilities will be physically destroyed. Ostentatiously let Iran know about the range and power of our capacities — how deep and extensive a campaign we could conduct, extending beyond just nuclear facilities to military-industrial targets, refineries, power grids and other concentrations of regime power.

(3) “Give Iran a face-saving way out.”

Offer Iran the most generous possible terms — economic, diplomatic and political. End of sanctions, assistance in economic and energy development, trade incentives and a regional security architecture. Even Russian nuclear fuel.

Tellingly, however, Cordesman does not join those who suggest yielding on nuclear enrichment. That’s important because a prominently leaked proposed “compromise” would guarantee Iran’s right to enrich, though not to high levels.

In my view, this would be disastrous. Iran would retain the means to potentially produce fissile material, either clandestinely or in a defiant breakout at a time of its choosing.

Would Iran believe a Cordesman-like ultimatum? Given the record of the Obama administration, maybe not. Some (though not Cordesman) have therefore suggested the further step of requesting congressional authorization for the use of force if Iran does not negotiate denuclearization.

First, that’s the right way to do it. No serious military action should be taken without congressional approval (contra Libya). Second, Iran might actually respond to a threat backed by a strong bipartisan majority of the American people — thus avoiding both war and the other nightmare scenario: a nuclear Iran.

If we simply continue to drift through kabuki negotiations, however, one thing is certain:

>> Either America, Europe, the Gulf Arabs and the Israelis will forever be condemned to live under the threat of nuclear blackmail (even nuclear war) from a regime the State Department identifies as the world’s greatest exporter of terror.

>> Or an imperiled Israel, with its more limited capabilities, will strike Iran — with correspondingly greater probability of failure and of triggering a regional war.

All options are bad. Doing nothing is worse. “The status quo may not prevent some form of war,” concludes Cordesman, “and may even be making it more likely.”

PAUL MCCARTNEY HELPS RESCUE AN ABUSED ELEPHANT

You can add “animal rights activist” to Paul McCartney’s resume. The superstar singer-songwriter and Knight of the Realm teamed with former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson and PETA to successfully advocate for Sunder, an elephant who was living in deplorable conditions in India.
According to the Times of India, Sunder’s handler mistreated him and kept him chained in the dark for seven years at the Jyotiba Temple in Maharashtra, India. When the situation became public, McCartney and Anderson both drafted letters to Indian officials asking them to step in.

“I have seen photographs of young Sunder, the elephant kept alone in a shed at a temple and put in chains with spikes,” McCartney wrote. “Years of his life have been ruined by keeping him and abusing him in this way. Enough is enough. Get Sunder out.”

India’s Forest Minister, Dr. Patangrao Shripatrao Kadam, intervened in the situation, and on Thursday it was announced that Sunder will be removed from the temple and placed at a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center near Bangalore.

“The difference between Sunder’s cruel life in chains at the temple and his new journey to freedom, love and care is like night and day,” a PETA spokesperson said. “We are grateful to the Forest Minister for agreeing to liberate Sunder and let him enjoy things that are natural and important to him for the first time in his life.”

Joey, this is not gonna help flank pain!

Fans generally expect U2 to release 2-3 more studio albums before the band calls it a career. In mid-June, our home page poll question asked fans to guess how many more studio albums U2 will release and almost 63 percent of respondents said two or three. Fans cast a total of 1,925 votes over a two-week period.

Three albums was the most popular choice, getting just 12 more votes than two albums. There are also almost nine percent of fans that are optimistic enough to think that U2 will release six or more additional studio albums (which could take a good 25-30 years at the band's current pace). Full poll results are shown below.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr Among Artists Supporting Anti-Fracking Campaign

Surviving Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are among the many stars who are supporting an environmental campaign launched by John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and son Sean. The Artists Against Fracking coalition seeks to put an end to hydraulic fracking, a method of extracting natural gas from deep in the earth that some say can potentially contaminate water supplies and release harmful chemicals into the environment.

The initiative was organized after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced recently that the gas companies may soon start fracking in the state. An online petition asking Cuomo not to allow the mining technique to be used in New York has been posted at the Artists Against Fracking website.

Others artists who are backing the anti-fracking campaign include David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, Patti Smith Group, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, ex-Santana/Journey singer/keyboardist Greg Rolie, The Allman Brothers Band's Warren Haynes, The B-52s and Bonnie Raitt.

"Protecting our drinking water is fundamental to life," notes Sean Lennon in a statement. "And people worldwide know that as a species, we are near a tipping pointWe all have a responsibility to preserve the planet's life-support systems for future generations."

" Mark David Chapman 'embarrassed' by John Lennon murder; says he thought about killing Johnny Carson or George C. Scott  "

" John Lennon's killer told a parole board that as a Christian, he is "embarrassed" over his crime, and that he could have just as easily gone after Johnny Carson or George C. Scott.

The new details came out at Mark David Chapman’s seventh hearing, which took place on Aug. 22. The transcript was released Wednesday, after the Beatle killer was denied parole and ordered to remain at Wende Correctional Facility in western New York.

“So this is obviously very embarrassing for me now, having committed murder.”
- Mark David Chapman

Chapman told the board he was living in Hawaii when he decided to kill Lennon “because he was very famous.” He also thought about killing late-night TV host Johnny Carson and actor George C. Scott.

“If [Lennon] was less famous than three or four other people on the list, he would not have been shot,” Chapman told the board.

Lennon was gunned down at the entrance to his Manhattan apartment building on Dec. 8, 1980. Chapman recounted how he staked out the building, and even approached the rock and roll legend earlier in the day for an autograph.

“He was very kind to me,” Chapman told the board. “[He was a] very cordial and very decent man.”

Nonetheless,  Chapman, who said he “was so compelled to commit murder that nothing would have dragged me away from that building” waited until Lennon returned from a recording session and then shot him.

“When Mr. Lennon passed me I turned, pulled out my weapon and shot him in the back,” Chapman said.

Chapman, who was carrying a copy of the J.D. Salinger classic “Catcher in the Rye,” said he fired five shots with a .38-caliber revolver, hitting Lennon four times in front of his wife, Yoko Ono.

Chapman said he bought the murder weapon in Honolulu, and got the hollow point bullets from a police officer pal in Atlanta who did not know of his plan.

Chapman claims to be a Christian, dating back well before the murder he committed at age 25.

“So this is obviously very embarrassing for me now, having committed murder,” Chapman told the board.   "

Berry Gordy, Paul McCartney to play Motown piano

In town for a concert last summer, Paul McCartney made his first-ever visit to Detroit's Motown Museum, the legendary two-story "Hitsville USA" building where a generation's worth of musical gems were created.

McCartney, a contemporary of Motown stars such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, "was just thrilled to be in the space," said Lina Stephens, the museum's curator, who gave McCartney and his bandmates a guided tour that day.

McCartney was also excited to come across a pair of pianos.

"He came to the first piano - even though there's a sign on it that says, 'Please do not touch' - he went up and played the piano," Stephens said. "He said, 'I'm sorry I have to,' and he played."

When the group arrived at Studio A - the famed Motown recording studio - McCartney found piano No. 3. This one, though, had a cover over the keys.

He was told it couldn't be played due to deterioration, and McCartney moved on.

The next day, he called with an offer to have the damaged 1877 Steinway grand fully restored.

More than a year later, that process has been completed.

The restored 9-foot Victorian rosewood will have its coming-out party at a Sept. 18 charity event in New York City before returning to its home on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

McCartney and Motown founder Berry Gordy will play the piano at the New York event, dubbed "Project: Harmony," said Motown Museum Board of Trustees Chairwoman Robin Terry, Gordy's grandniece. The event will benefit the Motown Museum.

"We'll unveil the piano and then the two of them will play the piano, and we'll have some fun and leave it to them to make of that what they will," Terry said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.

The piano will eventually go back on display at Studio A, where it has been housed since the museum's opening in 1985.

Terry said the piano made its way to Motown when the studio acquired Golden World Records in 1967, a facility that was redubbed Motown Studio B and used by musicians and songwriters to create music by Wonder, Gaye and other Motown greats.

The piano was restored by Steinway & Sons to professional recording quality, Terry said, with all of its internal components - soundboard, keys, hammers, pins and strings - restored. The piano's case was left as is to preserve its authenticity, while the legs, which were not original, were replaced.

While the original strings and hammers were worn beyond repair, they were retained and will be returned to the museum for exhibit.

McCartney's publicist didn't return a message from the AP seeking comment, but Terry said: "Paul McCartney, he orchestrated the process, moving the piano, getting it to Steinway. ... It wasn't just a monetary thing. His soul was in it. He wanted to make sure that this contribution was made, and he followed it through from beginning to end."

While they didn't cross paths all that often during their respective heydays, The Beatles and Motown artists were members of a mutual admiration society.

Beatles manager Brian Epstein did promote Motown revues in the United Kingdom, which were popular with fans and stars alike. And Four Tops singer Abdul "Duke" Fakir recalls being at a party with The Beatles, where the Fab Four peppered his group with questions about how they sang their harmonies and achieved other elements of their sound.

According to Stephens, McCartney "was pretty tickled" during his tour to find a photo of himself and Beatles bandmates Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon alongside Gordy's father and Gordy's three children.

McCartney "talked about the fact that he had always heard about and been conscious of Motown and getting his hands on those first Motown recordings and things," Stephens said. "It was kind of completing a circle for him in a lot of respects."

Joey, why does jb feel Gross is simply out of reach?

The official photo book of the U2 360 tour has a new name -- From The Ground Up -- and is due in stores just in time for the holiday shopping season.

We first reported on the book almost a year ago (October 2011) when it was being called "U2360°: The Official Story of the Greatest Spectacle in Stadium-Rock History." But book cover images (seen at right), a listing on Amazon.com (plus other shops) and an email today from U2.com all show the title as From The Ground Up.

Despite the name change, the book still features photographs by Ralph Larmann and text by Dylan Jones, editor of British GQ magazine. That Amazon.com page lists the publication date as November 27, 2012.

Coincidentally, the U2.com email also tells paid members not to order the book because part of the 2013 membership plan will be a special edition of the book "with a little something extra" that includes more live tracks from the U2 360 tour (like those found on U22).
