Book Excerpt: Paul McCartney Goes From 'Eleanor Rigby' to 'Silly Love Songs' and Back Again
Read an excerpt from 'Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles' Solo Careers'
By Andrew Grant Jackson

...
Paul McCartney performs with Wings.
RB/Redferns

Originally a lot of the best rock lyrics were gibberish like "Awopbopaloobop." Then Bob Dylan married the poetry of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" to the sound of the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" and changed everything.

In the Sixties, Paul McCartney declared that he vaguely minded anybody knowing anything he didn't know. He was the man about town in London with actress Jane Asher on his arm, seeing all the highbrow plays. He listened to Stockhausen and symphonies while poets William Burroughs and Richard Brautigan recorded spoken-word albums in his buddy Barry Miles' Indica bookstore.

McCartney watched John Lennon pen "Revolution," then wrote his own more subtle and universal ode to Black Power with "Blackbird." Meanwhile, Mick Jagger was also doing his best to keep up with Dylan. His actress girlfriend Marianne Faithfull gave him the novel The Master and the Margarita, which Jagger transmogrified into "Sympathy for the Devil."

A minority of rock critics like Nik Cohn lamented that Dylan and the Beatles corrupted the nonsensical purity of mindless rock and roll like "Tutti Fruti." He felt the Sixties intellectual posers' attempt to be profound to be infinitely more annoying. Later critics like Lester Bangs would clamor for more moronic fun and Iggy Stooge and the Ramones would provide it. With stupid lyrics about sniffin' glue or having a "real cool time" and bein' "Loose," they were intelligent people masquerading as idiots to be funny and edgy.

But for the most part, as the Sixties became the Seventies, the rock intelligentsia was dominated by critics like intellectual visionary Greil Marcus and Jon Landau, who would become Bruce Springsteen's manager and prod him into becoming the successor to John Steinbeck. Their fast-moving brains demanded food for thought in the lyrics.

However, by the mid-Seventies, McCartney and Linda just wanted to get stoned and chill with the kids on the farm. When he downshifted from "Eleanor Rigby" to odes to comic books like "Magneto and Titanium Man," the critics lambasted him.

So he told the critics to stuff it with the most sublime disco-tinged mini-symphony any supermarket shopper ever heard. Opening with the sound of an automated assembly line like a craftsman clocking in on autopilot, he turned his supple bass into the lead instrument and proved he still had his ear to the ground by serving up the sweetest strings and tastiest horns this side of Philadelphia. Whereas in the Sixties the Beatles studied Motown, now McCartney took his cue from the current kings of slick soul, producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, whose label Philadelphia International featured acts like The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (with lead singer Teddy Pendergrass), Lou Rawls, The Three Degrees and Billy Paul.

"You're all just pizza and fairy tales," Lennon once sneered at McCartney. But Lennon's final statement for five years was a cover album of rock and roll oldies, so he was, too. "Silly Love Songs" marked the end of an era, just as Lennon's hibernation did.

There would be no more visions, just consummately crafted pop rock like there was pre-1966. Only the beat had modernized and it was Linda, Denny and Paul chanting "I love you" instead of John, George and Paul.

The instrumentation was happy, dammit, because McCartney was happy touring the US with his family. And just as he had been in synch with his generation when they were desperate for wisdom from his mother's ghost in "Let It Be," he was in synch with them as they just wanted to take Quaaludes, live out Saturday Night Fever and forget the My Lai massacre.

Culturally, America had reached an accord. Long hair, denim jackets and pot were (sort of) accepted by the mainstream ŕ la That '70s Show. The Sexual Revolution was even assimilated with Fifties nostalgia, when Happy Days' mom Marian Cunningham asked her husband Howard if he was feeling frisky.

Still, the critics needling McCartney to "live up to his potential" could periodically get to him. In later decades, he would intermittently team with taskmasters like George Martin, Elvis Costello, or Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich, or write a symphony, or bare his soul when his partner was murdered or his second wife betrayed him.

Had the critics of 1976 known how much more music McCartney still had in him, they would have understood that you couldn't be heavy all the time.

http://news.yahoo.com/iran-israels-existence-insult-humanity-093922735.html

" Iran: Israel's existence 'insult to all humanity'  "

"  .....TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity," Iran's president said Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said confronting Israel is an effort to "protect the dignity of all human beings."

"The existence of the Zionist regime is an insult to all humanity," Ahmadinejad said. He was addressing worshippers at Tehran University after nationwide pro-Palestinian rallies, an annual event marking Quds (Jerusalem) Day on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, support for radical anti-Israel groups on its borders and repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly made such calls, as has Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has denied allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at producing electricity and radioisotopes used to treat cancer patients.

Israel has been carrying on an increasingly public debate about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's official position is to favor diplomatic and economic measures to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, but Israel insists that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Israeli leaders say "all options are on the table," a clear reference to a military strike, if they determine that other measures have failed.

Iran has warned it would hit back at Israel if it is attacked, also threatening to strike at American interests in the region.

Ahmadinejad called Israel "a corrupt, anti-human organized minority group standing up to all divine values."

"Today, confronting the existence of the fabricated Zionist regime is in fact protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings," said Ahmadinejad, with a black and white scarf many Palestinians wear around his neck.

Demonstrators in Tehran set U.S. and Israeli flags on fire and chanted "Death to the U.S." and "Death to Israel" during their pro-Palestinian rally.

Iran and Israel have been bitter enemies for decades. Khamenei has called Israel a "cancerous tumor" that must be wiped out.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have intensified since 2005, when Ahmadinejad said in a speech that Israel will one day be "wiped off the map." The Iranian president has also described the Holocaust, when 6 million Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators during World War II, as a "myth."

Paul McCartney voices support for Russian punk band

The members of incarcerated Russian punk band Pussy Riot have gained a powerful new ally in their battle with Russian authorities over freedom of speech: Paul McCartney.

The former Beatle has come out in support of the female trio, whose members have been in jail for five months since mounting a protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral. They are facing possible seven-year prison terms.

McCartney, who performed in Red Square in 2003 in front of a massive audience that included Putin, has posted a letter of support on his web site (PM.com) for the three musicians stating:

"Dear Nadya, Katya and Masha,

"I'm writing to show my support for you at this difficult time. I would like you to know that I very much hope the Russian authorities would support the principle of free speech for all their citizens and not feel that they have to punish you for your protest. Many people in the civilized world are allowed to voice their opinions and as long as they do not hurt anyone in doing so I believe this is the best way forward for all societies. I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will to everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom.

"Wishing you the very best luck,

Paul McCartney"

Joey, why must jb stand his ground?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mark David Chapman, who shot and killed former Beatle John Lennon 32 years ago, will have his seventh parole hearing this week, New York state's Department of Corrections said on Saturday.

A decision on whether to release him will likely be made public by the end of the week, said department spokeswoman Linda Foglia.

Chapman's interviews with the parole board will take place at Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Alden, New York, where he is being held, she said.

" Netanyahu ‘determined to attack Iran’ before US elections, claims Israel’s Channel 10TV reporter adds: ‘I doubt Obama could say anything that would convince PM to delay a possible attack’ "

" Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “is determined to attack Iran before the US elections,” Israel’s Channel 10 News claimed on Monday night, and Israel is now “closer than ever” to a strike designed to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive.

The TV station’s military reporter Alon Ben-David, who earlier this year was given extensive access to the Israel Air Force as it trained for a possible attack, reported that, since upgraded sanctions against Iran have failed to force a suspension of the Iranian nuclear program in the past two months, “from the prime minister’s point of view, the time for action is getting ever closer.”

Asked by the news anchor in the Hebrew-language TV report how close Israel now was to “a decision and perhaps an attack,” Ben-David said: “It appears that we are closer than ever.”

In what was already destined to be a legendary moment in the history of live music, Paul McCartney surprised fans by joining Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band on stage for their encore to perform the classic Beatles songs "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist & Shout". But the plug was pulled on the audio plug towards the end of Twist & Shout because the show had gone past the local curfew time of 10:30 p.m. The Palladia telecast will present the performance of "Twist & Shout " to its end.

An annual 3-day event in London s Hyde Park, Hard Rock Calling 2012 is one of the world's premier outdoor rock festivals of the summer, featuring an eclectic mix of prestigious rock and pop acts.

Palladia s telecast will feature the top highlights of the festival including performances by Paul Simon and Soundgarden as well as featured artists such as John Fogerty, Lady Antebellum, Christina Perri, Tom Morello, Allison Krauss, the Punch Brothers and Iggy & the Stooges.

VH1 Classic will also air Hard Rock Calling 2012 on Sunday, August 26 at 9pm ET/PT.

In September 1967, The Beatles loaded a film crew onto a bus along with friends, family and cast and headed west on the A30 out of London to make their third film, this time conceived and directed by The Beatles themselves.

"Paul said, 'Look I've got this idea' and we said 'great!' and all he had was this circle and a little dot on the top - that's where we started." (Ringo)

In the wake of the extraordinary impact of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album and the One World satellite broadcast of All You Need Is Love, The Beatles devised, wrote and directed their third film, Magical Mystery Tour, a dreamlike story of a coach day trip to the seaside.

The film features a fabulous supporting cast of character actors and performers, (including Ivor Cutler, Victor Spinetti, Jessie Robins, Nat Jackley, Derek Royle, and the inimitable Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band).

Apple Films have fully restored the long out-of-print, classic feature film for October 8th release worldwide (October 9th in North America) on DVD and Blu-ray with a remixed soundtrack (5.1 and stereo) and special features.

A special, boxed deluxe edition will also be available, and, for the first time ever, there will be a limited theatrical release from September 27th.

* This new release also feature three new edits of some of the song performances, as well as scenes that were cut out of the original film.
