Poll Results: U2 Fans Don't Trust Bono on New Album News
Posted: June 29, 2012
By: Matt McGee / @mattmcgee

Poor Bono. For years he's been the main mouthpiece of the band, especially when it comes to talking about what U2 is doing in the studio and how the band's new albums are progressing, sounding and so forth. He's known for grand statements, like the comment at the beginning of June that U2 had just had its best three weeks in the studio since 1979.

That prompted us to run a new poll question on our home page asking how much U2 fans believe Bono's proclamations about new albums and studio progress. The results? About 60 percent of the 2,160 fans who voted said they find Bono either "not believable" or "mostly unbelievable." Less than 10 percent found him "fully believable" on these matters. Ouch.

...

We've just posted a new, related poll question: Which band member do you find most believable when discussing U2's studio and new album work? We'll leave Bono in there as an option to see if he can redeem himself. Cast your votes on our home page, www.atu2.com.

Yitzhak Shamir, Former Israeli Prime Minister, Dies at 96, Officials Say

Yitzhak Shamir, who emerged from the militant wing of Israel’s pre-state militia and served as prime minister longer than anyone except David Ben-Gurion, promoting a muscular Zionism and expansive settlement in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, died Saturday. He was 96.

His death was announced by the Israeli government.

As head of the right-wing Likud bloc, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now leads, Mr. Shamir served as premier from 1983 to 1984 and from 1986 to 1992. He had withdrawn from public life over the past decade, silenced by Alzheimer’s disease

Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney will end the Olympics opening ceremony with Hey Jude and he'll ask the stadium's 60,000 spectators to join him for a sing-along

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney will close out the Olympics Games opening ceremony with a performance of Hey Jude - and he'll ask the stadium's 60,000 spectators to sing along with him.

One billion people are expected to tune in to watch the spectacular three-hour show, which is being directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle and is costing £27 million ($42 million) to produce.

The largest harmonically tuned bell in the world will ring to mark the start of the ceremony at 9pm (4pm ET) on July 27 - and the pop legend will bring it to a rousing finale at midnight (7pm ET).

McCartney prompted rumours Hey Jude was on his Olympics set list last month when he reportedly refused to perform the song at the Queen's Jubilee concert.

Sources now confirm to the Sunday Times the song will mark the end of the ceremony later this month.

They have also revealed a darker side to Danny Boyle's Isles of Wonder spectacular - named after a line in Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

As well as a 'green and pleasant land' celebrating Britain's rolling fields and rural heritage - the show will include a 'History Parade' celebrating the NHS, immigration and protest movements, and shining a light on the country's darker past.

The green set will transform into a bleak industrial landscape and performers will recreate the Jarrow march of 1936, when 200 men walked to London to protest poverty and unemployment in the north east.

There will also be a tribute to the suffragette movement, led by an actress portraying Emmeline Pankhust.

And a celebration of Windrush of 1948, when West Indians sailed to Britain in search of a new life - played out to a calypso soundtrack.

Britain's National Health Service will also be honoured by a parade of real nurses pushing hospital beds around the arena.
Performers will pay tribute to the Beatles by dressing in outfits inspired by the Sgt Pepper album cover

Performers will pay tribute to the Beatles by dressing in outfits inspired by the Sgt Pepper album cover

And there's room in the show for a tribute to the Beatles, as performers dressed in Sgt Pepper-inspired military uniforms fill the inside of the stadium.

A detailed soundtrack will accompany each performance, changing as the 'History Parade' progresses to the present day, including an all-female urban dance group, who'll perform the background music as a group of BMX bikers recreate stunts.

One highlight is expected to be the appearance of five Olympic rings which will converge and burst into flames in a spectacular pyrotechnic display - before Sir Paul McCartney closes the event with a performance of Hey Jude.

There will be three final rehearsals for the opening ceremony in the Olympic stadium the week before the Games, featuring up to 60,000 people, including 900 schoolchildren.

The volunteer performers are not being paid but will receive travel and food costs, and officials have sent out letters warning those taking part not to divulge any information about what they are doing.

Such is the pressure to get the ceremony perfect that officials have warned that any children unable to make every practice session will be prevented from performing.

The opening ceremony, which will be attended by 60,000 spectactors inside Stratford's Olympic Stadium, including the Queen, is due to begin at 9pm on July 27.  "

Paul McCartney 'Lost It' when Performed With Brian Wilson

Sir Paul McCartney "lost it" when he got to perform with The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson because he was overwhelmed by the opportunity.

The Beatles legend sang at a charity concert on the Beach Boys star's hit 'God Only Knows' and admits he was very overwhelmed by the opportunity.

He explained: "We were doing a benefit together, and I was OK on the actual performance, I held it together, but at the sound check I lost it, because it's very emotional, this song, I find it.

"I can sit and think 'Oh my God, I'm singing it with Brian', it just got me. I couldn't do it."

Paul admits he and bandmate John Lennon used to compete with songwriting, not just with one another but also the Beach Boys, and thinks it inspired them to do better.

Speaking on Absolute Radio's Ronnie Wood Show, he added: "Brian Wilson sort of proved himself to be like a really amazing composer, and I was into chords and harmonies and stuff at that time, and we ended up, it's kind of like a rivalry; we'd put a song out, Brian would hear it, then he'd do one, which is nice.

"It's like me and John, you kind of try and top each other all the time. But he eventually came out with 'God Only Knows'."

ROCK ROYALTY JOIN FORCES TO PROVE MUSIC IS ART

Rock legends Sir Paul Mccartney, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey and Ronnie Wood came together (June 29) to celebrate pop artist Sir Peter Blake's 80th birthday.

The foursome posed for pictures as they partied at London's Royal Albert Hall in honour of Blake, famous for designing the cover of The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The artist, who currently has an exhibition at the concert hall, was seen enjoying a drink with McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell, and later cut a cake in front of guests including Beatles producer Sir George Martin and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, according to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.  "

Adam Clayton's Ex-Assistant Gets 7-Year Jail Term
Posted: July 06, 2012
By: m2 / @mattmcgee

Carol Hawkins, Adam Clayton's former personal assistant, was sentenced to seven years in jail today for embazzling (EU)2.8 million from him over a four-year period. Hawkins was convicted last week on 181 counts.

According to the Irish Independent, Judge Patrick McCartan had some complimentary words about Adam during today's sentencing:

"Mr. Clayton seems to this court from what has emerged from this case to be a good employer, a person who was capable of showing care and compassion, who gave the accused a second chance."

The judge ordered that funds from the sale of an apartment in New York City that Hawkins bought be used to repay some of the money she stole.

Adam was not in court today for the sentencing.

Builder blagged his way onto stage to sing with Paul McCartney

Blagging became a fine art for a builder who found himself on stage singing with Sir Paul McCartney, and then meeting the Queen as a member of the Military Wives' Choir.

Michael Armstrong, who is also a budding pop star, was backstage at the Jubilee concert, outside Buckingham Palace, helping his manager Lisa Davies and Sir Cliff Richard, by doing odd jobs such as organising press meetings.

A huge Paul McCartney fan, Mr Armstrong, 38, stood at the side of the stage to see his hero perform as he launched into his encore rendition of Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da.

He said: "They were ushering all the other stars on stage and I thought 'I'm going to take the chance to get on stage'."

"It was fantastic to get to perform with Elton John and Paul McCartney."

But then Mr Armstrong of Sandersfield Road, Banstead, became trapped on stage.

He said: "When the song finished there was no way to get off the stage and I was introduced to the Queen as a member of the Military Wives group.

"It wasn't what I expected when I got there," he said.

Mr Armstrong is no stranger to the music world. He was fixing the kitchen of music promoter Lisa Davies last summer, and left one of his demo CDs with her.

He then signed to her Upbeat Synergy label and has since worked around the clock, rubbing shoulders with established stars including Chris de Burgh and The Eagles.

"It has been pretty crazy, unlike any other 12 months of my life," he told the Mirror.

He added: "It is fantastic, as someone who has written songs and been a singer all my life, to say I played Buckingham Palace with Sir Paul McCartney. There's nothing left to achieve is there?"

Although Mr Armstrong is releasing his debut EP Paler Shade of Blue on Monday, his family are keeping his feet on the ground.

He said: "I've got three sons and they're rather excited for me, but they are excited for a few minutes when they see me in a magazine and then they want to play on the PlayStation again."

Paul Supports Humane Society International's Be Cruelty-Free Campaign

Paul has given his backing to Humane Society International's Be Cruelty-Free campaign, the largest-ever global effort to end animal testing for cosmetics worldwide. In many countries, animals such as rabbits, mice and guinea pigs continue to have cosmetic chemicals dripped in their eyes, spread on their sensitive skin or injected into their blood. Such testing is already banned in Europe, and a further ban on the sale of cosmetics that have been newly tested on animals in other parts of the world is due to come into effect in March 2013. Paul has sent a powerful message to consumers across the globe to sign HSI's Be Cruelty-Free pledge and help end the suffering for good.

Paul said:
"The ugly truth about testing beauty products on animals is that it causes them unimaginable pain and suffering. If every cosmetic tested on rabbits or mice had a photo on the packaging showing these animals with weeping swollen eyes and inflamed skin, I believe everyone would leave cruelty on the shelf and go for the cruelty-free option instead. So, let's stand up for those defenceless animals by supporting the Humane Society International's new Be Cruelty-Free global campaign to end animal testing of cosmetics worldwide. Go online, sign the Be Cruelty-Free pledge today and help HSI achieve a world where no animal has to suffer and die for the sake of cosmetics."

Animal testing for cosmetics such as lipstick, hairspray and moisturiser is banned across the European Union, but is still permitted in most countries around the world. In some regions, including China and parts of South America, such testing is even required by law.

HSI believes that testing cosmetics on animals is both unethical and unnecessary. Cosmetics can easily be produced the cruelty-free way, by using the thousands of existing ingredients for which safety data are already available, combined with advanced non-animal testing methods such as 3D human skin and advanced computer models.

"We're thrilled to have Sir Paul's support for our Be Cruelty-Free campaign in Europe because so many consumers are still unaware that animals still suffer for cosmetics testing and that their purchasing choices can make a difference to animals," said Troy Seidle, director of research & toxicology for HSI. "We agree with Sir Paul that if the truth about animal suffering was on the cosmetics label, ethical consumerism would prevail. So we hope that people across the globe will join Humane Society International and Sir Paul in our effort to turn the whole world cruelty-free."

The Be Cruelty-Free campaign combines consumer campaigning and political lobbying with corporate and scientific outreach. Be Cruelty-Free has been launched by HSI and its partners in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, India, New Zealand and the United States.  "
