Joey, what is jbs greatest fear right now?

Bono made a (somewhat) surprise appearance on RTE TV tonight in Ireland during the 50th anniversary special for The Late Late Show, and he made a few interesting comments about U2's album progress.

Host Ryan Tubridy began by asking Bono what the band is up to currently.

"Looking for the perfect pop song. Edge is in denial of his genius. I'm a little too sure of my own. Larry is suspicious of both and Adam sees merit in both. They're unbelievable. They really want it, though, I will say that. As a band there's no sense of entitlement. I think they're very aware that U2's gotta do something very special to have a reason to exist right now, so that's what we're doing. We're song writing -- you know the process. But it's -- they're amazing men. They really are extraordinary. They really, really want it."

"There won't be a U2 album unless there's something really special. You just gotta go to that place. You gotta dig a deep well and see what you can pull up. We've been through many songs and there's some great stuff. I would say we had the best three weeks in the studio that we've had since, like, 1979. Three weeks is all it should take...."

Later in the interview, he says he knows U2 has a great song "because the band will stop arguing."

Paul performs for the Queen June 4th

Earlier in the day, Paul was backstage at Buckingham Palace doing interviews for BBC One (TV) and BBC Radio Two.

Paul and Will.i.am (The Black Eyed Peas) did an impromptu interview with each other
for BBC Radio Two

The Queen's Jubilee Concert was broadcast live on BBC One TV with the audio broadcast on BBC Radio Two. BBC One blocked live video from the concert to those who lived outside the UK but there was a live internet broadcast (with annoying ads on screen) for anyone at venturetv.me.

Concert Set List (VIDEO)

1. Magical Mystery Tour
2. All My Loving
3. Let It Be
4. Live And Let Die
5. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da

Paul wore a new black jacket with military shoulder straps (epaulets). The collar and cuffs were adorned with a gold embroidered leaf pattern.

Macca took off his jacket right after "Live And Let Die" and flipped it inside out to show off his Union Jack (British Flag) lining. Paul also wore Union Jack suspenders and played a custom painted Union Jack Hofner bass for the finale song "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da."

"Live And Let Die" (1:27 secs in) had the usual fireworks and flashpots exploding 360 degrees around the circular stage. Inside the front courtyard of the Palace, fireworks also were shot off during the song.

All the performers took the stage to sing and dance along to "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da." The audience of 250,000 were invited to sing along at the appropriate part of the song.

When the song finished, the royal family took the stage in front of the performers and the Queen lit the national jubilee beacon (torch) with a gigantic crystal diamond. This was shown in it's entirety on CNN. Paul could be seen throughout the ceremony holding his Union Jack Hofner.

Following the ceremony was a spectacular display of fireworks bursting out of the roof of Buckingham Palace, which was lit with the red, white and blue colors of the British flag.

Paul McCartney ditched 'Hey Jude' from Jubilee concert for Olympics

Paul McCartney reportedly refused to play 'Hey Jude' during The Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert.

The singer didn't perform his usual closing number and instead surprised the audience with a rendition of 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da'.

According to the Daily Express, the former Beatle ditched a performance of 'Hey Jude' as he plans to use it during the Olympics opening ceremony instead.

A source told the paper: "Paul already knew he was performing at the Olympics opening ceremony when 'Hey Jude' is a definite for the setlist.

"Understandably, he didn't want to be performing the same song twice at two such high-profile events."

McCartney confirmed that he would be a part of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony on July 27, earlier this week.  "

Paul McCartney's big new gig - and his confession: He drank too much

Paul McCartney, who turns 70 on June 18, was knighted in 1997 by Queen Elizabeth for services to British music. His services to England and to music continue as he headlined the Queen's star-studded Diamond Jubilee Concert on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. But he confessed that he's not done with big fantabulous London gigs.

During an interview with BBC Radio 5, Sir Paul finally confirmed what had been rumored for months, that he will head a cast of 15,000 when he closes the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony on July 27 at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium that was built last year for the games. The rest of the lineup for the opening ceremonies has yet to be announced.

But there was another revelation from Sir Paul, a startling one: Britain's Express quotes McCartney as saying that as The Beatles were breaking up in 1969-70, and the aftermath in the early '70s, business pressures led him to get so constantly drunk that he was unable to write songs.

McCartney said he would attempt to escape all the trouble, taking his family to their sprawling get-away estate farm on Scotland's southernmost tip, the peninsula known as the Mull of Kintyre (on a side note, Paul's bagpipe-highlighted ode to the place, also called "Mull of Kintyre," was an international smash just about everywhere but here, spending nine weeks atop the UK singles chart, hitting No. 1 in five other countries and becoming the first British single to sell more than two million copies).

While there, "I overdid it, basically, he said. "I'd drink whiskey, of which there is a large supply in Scotland. I'd be getting like, 'heeeyyy, nice and fuzzy' and it's not a good (condition in which) to write, at least not for me it's not.

"I'd go into the studio, maybe have another drink and so on. I got to the point where Linda had to say, 'Look, you should cool it."

He explained the cause of his imbibing. "What happened was The Beatles, towards the end, was very constricting. You were in a corporate world suddenly. It's not what you get into music for, but it's there.

"It got very heavy, so me and Linda escaped with the kids, but the business hassles were still there. So, I think I was just trying to escape in my own mind, and I had the freedom to just have a drink whenever I fancied it."

This was not an option for McCartney when he was working with The Beatles in their studios at Abbey Road or at Apple Records headquarters, where their fable rooftop concert took place on Jan. 30, 1969.

"Me and John (Lennon) were always straight when we wrote (together), and it was normally in the middle of the day when you had your wits about you."

George Harrison's son weds model

The son of George Harrison has married in a ceremony attended by the remaining Beatles.

Dhani Harrison wed girlfriend Solveig Karadottir at his late father's Friar Park estate in Henley-on-Thames on Saturday (June 2).

The 33-year- old musician married the Icelandic former model in a secretive ceremony. The couple, who live in Los Angeles, only revealed details to friends the day before.

Guests included the two remaining Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney, 69, and Ringo Starr, 71, and actors Tom Hanks and Clive Owen.

In a speech Sir Paul -- who often described Harrison as 'my little baby brother' --said his friend would have been 'so proud' of his son.

The guitarist died aged 58 in 2001 after a battle with lung cancer. Dhani is his son with his second wife Olivia  "

Give Paul McCartney His Respect at 70

OK. Let me get this point out of the way right now. When it comes to The Beatles, my favorite rock and roll band of all time by far, I am always, definitely going to regard myself happily a "John" person.

You bet that I admired John Lennon's facility to turn a phrase, sing a rock and roll song and a ballad like "Julia" or "If I Fell." He could do it all with his singing voice. Plus, he was the wittiest person around in interviews. Lennon had an aura. His efforts toward promoting world peace also separated him from the pack. He went beyond music in his quest to make a difference.

Then there was his writing partner in the band, Paul McCartney. Because Lennon died in 1980, he was lionized as something of a Saint John, not merely an iconic rock and roll star. McCartney, meanwhile, kept chugging away in his workmanlike fashion in his solo career, as he had done as a Beatle as well.

The man who had written "Yesterday," Eleanor Rigby," "Blackbird," and "Hey Jude" still took second fiddle throughout history to Lennon's best work - "I Am the Walrus," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "A Day in the Life" and "All You Need Is Love."

It's about time for us to give Beatle Paul his due. He turns 70 years old on June 18. He has thrived, survived, and flourished in rock and roll over the years as a soloist. I saw him in concert at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium in recent years - and he was magnificent. Move over, Bruce Springsteen. Paul can hold his own on a stage against anyone. He clearly loved to play!

He has steadfastly maintained his dignity, too, when so many pundits chose to celebrate Lennon by knocking McCartney. It's a little bit silly to presume that we can't appreciate John's contributions without tearing down Macca.

It's a scary condition of life to put yourself into the public arena. Even the toughest-minded celebrity knows he or she is taking a chance and is at the mercy of the oft-savage media, which wants nothing more than to tear down a legend for the sport of it. I'm not always proud of my brethren - or myself. Yes, I admit it: I've done it as well. Hopefully not too often, at least.

It's funny in a way. When Bob Dylan was turning 70 a year ago, the media went cuckoo to honor the occasion with all kinds of retrospectives. But for Paul, we've seen almost no buildup in the press. I am not sure why - 70 is 70, and Paul deserves all of our appreciation and accolades for what he has meant to our lives over the past half-century. He is a special figure.

Happy Birthday, Paul! Enjoy June 18. Blow out all the candles. And thank you for everything.

Jimmy Fallon's 'Blow Your Pants Off': He tells EW the stories behind the songs and the stars

Jimmy Fallon's new album "Blow Your Pants Off "- a collection of weirdo experiments and famous-people duets from Fallon's late-night talk show - drops today, and all the big hits are there...

How did you convince Paul McCartney to perform with you?

Paul McCartney was the craziest one. He's my idol. I grew up listening to the Beatles. I was talking to him about the segment, and what we were going to talk about on the show. It's a true story that when he wrote "Yesterday," he originally wrote [sings], "Scrambled eggs/Oh my lady how I love your legs." And then he went to sleep. But he wrote that just so he could remember the cadence and the rhythm of the song. So I told him I had this sketch idea where he would sing the full song "Scrambled Eggs," and he goes [imitates McCartney], "I think I'll just do a chat, just a fun chat." And I was like, "It's written, one of our writers put it together, it's really funny." And he said, "Yeah, I think we'll just stick to some stories and have fun." So I said, "Can I just play it for you?" So I did it for him, and I said, "Do you want to do it?" and he said, "Only if you'll do it with me." And then I just passed out, because a Beatle just asked me to sing a duet with him. Cut to Paul McCartney singing "Scrambled Eggs" over my shoulder. I'm so proud that we get to do all these fun bits and release them on CD so that people who aren't awake when we do the show can hear them.  "

Joey, does jb sometimes think- ...

On at least one occasion, U2's mirror-ball lemon – the massive, mobile stage prop from which the band appeared for an encore every night during the PopMart tour – malfunctioned, trapping them inside. Fortunately for all of us, they managed to escape through a small door in the back of the lemon. But what if the door had also seized up? What if the band were stuck inside the lemon until only recently … what if they emerged to a world that never knew All That You Can't Leave Behind, the Slane Castle shows of 2001, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, the 360 tour … what if the band themselves had never experienced the triumphs and disappointments – and the attendant expectations – of the early part of the new millennium?

Cue the squiggly lines and flashback music.

Oslo, Norway. Six Months Ago. The 40-ft lemon slowly thrums to life, barely perceptibly at first but gradually gathering steam as assorted mechanical innards click into place. Cracked mirror panels fall to the ground as the lemon awakens, sending streams of sunlight to the corners of the now-abandoned Valle Hovin stadium. A reindeer sniffing around the edge of the stadium pauses briefly as the upper half of the giant piece of fruit awkwardly begins to rise.

Fourteen years have passed since Bono and the others were trapped inside the lemon. The U2 crew, emergency workers, and hundreds of fans who traveled to Norway with screwdrivers and crow bars have tried to free the band – all to no avail. Only now, for whatever reason, is the fruit willing to discharge its passengers. As the sun arcs over the Scandinavian sky and the lemon's upper half continues to creak open, U2 look upon the 21st century for the very first time.
