" February 9, 2012 -- Macca Report News ABC VIDEO
from Laura Waskin, Macca Reporter

Paul McCartney gets his star on the "Paullywood" Walk of Fame

Paul McCartney received his star on the Hollywood walk of fame today. The star is located in front of the Capitol Records building.

Neil Young introduced Paul who was given a plaque that read "Paullywood" instead of Hollywood. James McCartney and Nancy Shevell were there as well as Herbie Hancock and Jeff Lynne. Young said that Paul was a great guitarist and that influenced him to become a guitar player.

About 1,500 fans showed up and chanted "WE WANT PAUL!" when the ceremony didn't start on time. When Paul showed up everyone went crazy, screaming and holding up signs.

In his speech Paul thanked his fellow Beatles, "I couldn't have done it without those three boys ... I want to say thanks those guys -- John, George and Ringo."

Every time anyone mentioned The Beatles, fans started screaming. Paul would gesture his approval by shaking his fist in the air.

When asked where Ringo was, Paul said, "Ringo is a little under the weather."

Paul talked about growing up in Liverpool and listening to Walk of Famers like Buddy Holly (Paul's star is next to Buddy Holly's) and never dreamt that one day he would get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Macca's speech lasted about 7 minutes. The whole ceremony took about 18 minutes and then Paul went back into the Capitol Records building.

Amen Me Stonesian Brother !!!! :

"  It also was a working night for McCartney, who capped an opening medley by the cast from the Beatles’ “Love” by Cirque du Soleil with “Magical Mystery Tour.”

At the end of the evening, McCartney turned the vast hall into an intimate jazz club with “My Valentine,” a song he wrote for new wife Nancy Shevell, and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” two cuts off his latest album, Kisses On the Bottom. He was accompanied by Krall on the piano.

He whipped off his jacket and raced to the piano for the Wings song “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five.” He strapped on the bass for a closing medley of “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End,” with Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and former Eagle Joe Walsh backing him.  "

Paul McCartney honored at all-star concert
Neil Young, James Taylor, Katy Perry part of all-star concert

Will the real Paul McCartney please stand up and take another bow?

Is he the perpetually youthful rock and roller who brought a sold-out audience to its feet several times during Friday night's Grammy Awards-sponsored MusiCares Person of the Year concert in his honor?

Is he urbane crooner who teamed up with Diana Krall, bassist John Clayton and a string section for a jazzy interlude of his new, self-penned "My Valentine" and the Tin Pan Alley chestnut "I'm Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," both of which were a delight?

Or is he the fabled singer-songwriter who had an array of fellow legends (from Neil Young to Tony Bennett) and young stars (including Katy Perry and Coldplay) lining up to salute him on stage with some of his most beloved compositions?

All three answers proved correct at the nearly two-hour MusiCares concert at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where McCartney was feted by in front of a nearly 3,000-strong audience. It included Yoko Ono, Smokey Robinson, Brian Wilson, David Crosby, Grammy-winning Oceanside troubadour Jason Mraz, Elvis Costello, Tom Hanks, Jimmy Jam, Virgin Airlines/Virgin Records founder Richard Branson, guitar hero Steve Vai and Joe Lamond, the president and CEO of the Carlsbad-based National Association of Music Merchants.

"Tonight, we pay tribute to a remarkable music icon," said Neil Portnow, the head of the Recording Academy, under whose auspices the Grammys and MusiCares are held. (Established in 1989, MusiCares provides assistance to musicians and members of the recording industry who need medical or financial assistance. The annual concert honors artists for both their creative and philanthropic work.)

Yet, while there were stars galore on hand to play McCartney's songs for (and to) him -- the lineup also included James Taylor, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Alicia Keys, Duane Eddy and Sergio Mendes -- it does them no disservice to say that a majority of their musical contributions Friday proved anti-climatic. That's because McCartney took to the stage before any of them, the first time in memory at the 23-year-old MusiCares concert that the artist being honored did not wait until the end of the evening to perform.

By doing so, the former Beatle immediately set the bar higher than more than half of the night's featured artist s could hope to match, thanks to his wonderfully inspired versions of the Fab Four's classic "Magical Mystery Tour" and the Wings' chestnut "Junior's Farm."

Both songs rocked with enough vim and vigor to suggest that McCartney is 69-going-on-19. So did his show-closing performance of most of the second side of songs from The Beatles' "Abbey Road" album, which culminated in an ecstatic series of solos by McCartney and the front line of his band, along with two guests on guitar -- Foo Fighters' leader Dave Grohl and Eagles veteran (and former Encinitas resident) Joe Walsh. Grohl and Walsh looked so giddy to be playing alongside McCartney that, at one point, it seemed that both were about to levitate.

Foo Fighters had the unenviable task of being the first to follow McCartney on stage at the start of the concert, which raised a record $6.5 million for MusiCares. Grohl and his band delivered a rendition of the Wings' favorite "Jet" that exuded energy, but lacked the flair and finesse McCartney and his four-man band had demonstrated with such seemingly effortless ease.

Alicia Keys proved more effective introducing her solo version of "Blackbird," McCartney's stirring, Civil Rights-inspired ballad "Blackbird -- "This song really had a personal affect on me; I never realized how much this song was about me" than she did performing it. Her voice that strained each time she delivered the chorus, which she inexplicably chose to do in a key lower than she seemed comfortable handling.

More strikingly attired than any other performer, Katy Perry wore a white, sleeveless gown and a pink, rose-shaped hat that rose more than a foot above her head. She bravely attempted "Hey Jude," struggling to achieve a level of emotional depth she seemed incapable of achieving and attempting to conduct an audience sing-along with a glittering silver baton. Still, it was an interesting misfire by Perry, who -- Grammy honcho Portnow later announced -- had pledged $250,000 to MusiCares.

The timeless Tony Bennett, the night's senior performer at 85, attempted to transform "Here, There and Everywhere" into a finger-snapping, rat-pack-styled romp. He did so with mixed results, an assessment that also applies to Coldplay's semi-unplugged take on "We Can Work It Out" and Sergio Mendes' bossa-nova-cum-smooth-jazz version of "Fool on the Hill" (the Beatles' song that gave Mendes a major hit in the mid-1960s). Rock guitar pioneer Duane Eddy, along with Bennett the only artist featured Friday whose career preceded McCartney's, played a tasteful instrumental reading of "And I Love Her" that would have fared better in a more intimate setting.

Far more rewarding was Krauss and Union Station's achingly tender acoustic version of "NO More Lonely Nights," a relatively obscure song from McCartney's 1984 album, "Give My Regards to Broad Street"; Norah Jones' sultry interpretation of "Oh Darling"; and James Taylor and Diana Krall's exquisitely understated versions of "Yesterday" and "For No One," both of which feature ace jazz bassist John Clayton.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse ripped into "I Saw Her Standing There" with a raucous, almost primordial sense of abandon, managing to simultaneously pay homage to the song and make it their own. Where Coldplay tiptoed and Keys and Perry tripped, Young (himself the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year honoree) let rip, and the results were electrifying, as McCartney later acknowledged to the audience.

"It's great for me to be here," McCartney said, prior to his grand finale. "For me, it's obviously fantastic to hear all these great artist playing my songs, Neil rocking out, and (some of) the younger artists adding nuances I didn't know were there."

The concert was not televised, but McCartney will be featured during Sunday night's Grammy Awards on KFMB/Channel 8. If his Grammy showing is even half as inspired, it should be a highlight. In the meanwhile, MusiCares -- which last year honored Barbra Streisand -- will have to search intently to find an artist to honor next year who can come close to equaling McCartney's legacy and his vibrant performance Friday.

MusiCares Set List - February 10, 2012

1. Cirque du Soleil performance from Love
2. Magical Mystery Tour - Paul McCartney
3. Junior's Farm - Paul McCartney
4. Jet - Foo Fighters
5. Blackbird - Alicia Keys

Paul McCartney has given his stamp of approval to an upcoming tribute album that will feature Alice Cooper, Kiss, Billy Joel, Steve Miller and other stars performing their versions of Beatles, Wings and McCartney solo material.

The seeds for the project were planted almost 10 years ago, when producer/music supervisor Ralph Sall, who handled the music for the 2003 film ‘The In-Laws,’ crossed paths with McCartney, who had three songs on the soundtrack.

“It grew out of that experience,” Sall tells Billboard.com. “A good idea goes a long way, but it was important that it be blessed by Paul.”

Sall — whose credits include 1991′s ‘Deadicated’ (a Grateful Dead tribute), 1993′s ‘Common Thread: The Songs of The Eagles‘ and 2000′s ‘Stoned Immaculate: The Music of The Doors‘ — spent more than two years putting the McCartney tribute album together. Its title, release date and label have not been disclosed, but Sall has revealed that an accompanying TV special, featuring footage from the recording sessions and interviews with contributing artists, is in the works.

“You can tell by the variety of participants that Paul’s music is truly timeless,” Sall says. “Whether you’re 8 or 80, everyone loves Paul McCartney.”

Joey, what gets jb's goat?

Pretax losses at the artist management company controlled by U2's manager Paul McGuinness last year increased seven-fold to €1.8 million, writes Gordon Deegan.

Accounts filed by Principle Management Ltd show the firm's revenues decreased from €4.8 million to €3.1 million in the year to the end of March 2011.

Mr. McGuinness, his long-time associate Trevor Bowen and U.S.-based Keryn Kaplan received aggregate remuneration totalling €1.6 million during the year.

The firm filed a pretax loss of €253,821 in 2010.

ILLNESS KEEPS RINGO FROM JOINING MACCA AT GRAMMYS

Ringo Starr's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Freund, has confirmed that he is "under the weather," as Paul McCartney said at last week's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

"Yes, that is true. Ringo has pneumonia and unfortunately he and Barbara regretted they weren't able to attend MusiCares and he had to cancel his participation as a Presenter in this year's Grammys," she tells Beatlefan Bulletin. Let's hope our favorite drummer is feeling better soon!  "

Cover Story Excerpt: Paul McCartney

The 69-year-old Beatle talks about his history, family and non-stop career

...

Twenty years ago, when Paul McCartney turned 50, he remembers his then-manager pushing the idea of retirement. "It's only right," he was told. "You really don't want to go beyond 50, it's going to get embarrassing." In June, McCartney will be 70 ("I'm never going to believe I'm 70, I don't care what you say," he says. "There's a little cell in my brain that's never going to believe that"), and he still has no plans to stop touring or recording. "You get the argument 'Make way for the young kids,' " he says. "And you think, 'F*ck that, let them make way for themselves. If they're better than me, they'll beat me.' Foo Fighters don't have a problem, they're good. They'll do their thing.

"If you're enjoying it, why do something else? And what would you do? Well, a good answer is 'Take more holidays,' which is definitely on the cards, but I don't seem to do that. I love what I do so much that I don't really want to stop. I'm just kind of casually keeping an eye on how I feel, and onstage, it feels like it's always felt. So for the time being, the band's hot, I'm really enjoying myself, still singing like I sang, not experiencing, touch wood, any sort of problems to speak of. If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

It doesn't hurt that his touring schedule has been reduced to shorter, intense bursts in recent years, largely because of his shared-custody arrangement for his eight-year-old, Beatrice. "We don't do the big sloggo tour, we don't do the big U2-Stones go-out-forever thing, and get a bit fed up with it," says McCartney, who's planning some dates for later this year. "What we do now is events and selective dates. Because of my custody situation, I can only do that. At first, we thought, 'Oh, God, is this going to be a problem?' and it's actually turned out to be some kind of a blessing."

He can see himself rocking well into his eighties. "I can imagine it," he says. "As to whether my imagination will come true, I don't know. The last couple of years, I've gotten into guitar so there's all sorts of little things that crop up that entice you forward, and you go, 'Hmm, I'd like that.'"

I broach the idea of actually dying onstage would he be into it? He recoils slightly, then smiles. "What kind of question is that? I must say, that's not in my imagination. Rocking on until a grand old age... the only thing would be when it's not pleasant anymore, then it would be 'That's a good time to stop.' But it's way too pleasant at the moment. And it pays. Good gig, man. But I know exactly where you're coming from, though. How long can this go on...?"

Johnny Depp Rocks Out with Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen

Following their closing performance at Sunday night's Grammy Awards, Sir Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen made their way to the Foo Fighters' after-party at Fig & Olive Melrose Place. No sooner did they get there than Johnny Depp arrived and grabbed a glass of wine and a seat in the lounge, cordially greeting friends and fans.

At one point, McCartney approached Depp and mimicked his signature Pirates of the Caribbean Captain Jack Sparrow walk -- which resulted in lots of laughter. Depp then joined the former Beatle and his wife for dinner; McCartney, a vegetarian, stuck to dishes like the spaghetti Mediterraneano and vegetarian paella. By the end of the evening, fast friends McCartney, Springsteen and Depp were seen discussing the night's big awards and all the winners. "
