Work continues in preparation for July 30 show at Magnetic Hill
Times & Transcript, July 19, 2011
By: Craig Babstock

With work crews finishing the grandstand seating at the Magnetic Hill concert site over the next day or so, attention will soon turn to building the massive U2 stage.

For anyone who has seen the band on its 360? Tour in support of 2009's No Line on the Horizon album, or seen photos from the shows, U2 performs under what looks like a massive claw.

According to information provided by the promoter, the stage includes a cylindrical video system of interlocking LED panels, and a steel structure rising 150 feet from the floor over a massive stage with rotating bridges. Long-time U2 show director Willie Williams and architect Mark Fisher, who have worked on the band's previous ZooTV, PopMart, Elevation and Vertigo tours over the last 20 years, have combined to create a 360? design, which affords an unobstructed view for the audience.

"We've had some great stages on the hill," says Shane Porter, manager of venues for the city's Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture. "The Bigger Bang Tour with the Rolling Stones was a great stage  an elaborate, impressive stage. But it's a coup to get something like this U2 stage here." You could fit the entire Stones stage in the janitors closet of the Claw. Back in the spring, the city created a stage pad to support the gigantic structure and at the same time made some improvements to the site's drainage system to help clear out water after heavy rainfalls.

The band played in Montreal for two nights on July 8 and 9 and a few days after those shows the aluminum seats began to arrive in Moncton. Workers have been adding those 29,000 seats to the grandstand over the past several days.

"The crews are finishing up that grandstand build and the bulk of the work should be completed in the next day or two, with some final touches after that," says Porter.

While details such as the location of food vendors and water stations are being worked out, the stage will be the next major project.

"It's on schedule and Sunday or Monday we should start seeing things fall into place," says Porter.

The public is able to check in on the progress through the webcam located at http://magnetichillmusicfestival.ca. The live video currently shows three sets of grandstands surrounding an empty space, but once stage construction begins, that view will change daily.

The city is also converting the old Magnetic Hill Zoo train station, near the zoo parking lot, into a permanent box office that will have 24 windows where people can purchase and pick up previously purchased tickets. The city hopes the new facility will help ease delays and move people more quickly into the concert site.

"There's been a spike in ticket sales with the nice weather, so we encourage people to get their tickets if they're planning on going to the show," says Porter.

The number of tickets sold so far has not been released, but Porter says the site can handle about 80,000 people. While the hill might be able to fit more people than that, a bigger crowd would be a challenge to get in and out of the site.

"We know 80,000 people is proven, so we're quite comfortable to stay in that area," he says.

" London wedding for Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell
Sir Paul McCartney, the former Beatle, is to marry the American Nancy Shevell in the British capital.

Keenly aware that a lavish wedding does not always herald a happy marriage, Sir Paul McCartney has modest ambitions for his union with Nancy Shevell.

Mandrake hears that the former Beatle is to marry the American divorcée in a quiet ceremony in London with only close members of his family present.

The couple will then fly to New York, where they will hold a party for friends and members of Shevell's family.

"Paul loves Nancy very much, but does not want a big wedding," says a friend of the 69-year-old musician.

He married his second wife, Heather Mills, 43, in an expensive ceremony in the grounds of Castle Leslie in Ireland in 2002. Three hundred guests, including the Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr, attended the wedding, which involved thousands of pounds' worth of flowers, and a five-minute firework display. Security guards had prevented photographers from stealing a glimpse of the preparations.

The couple separated four years later. Mills was awarded £24.3 million by a judge as part of her settlement when the couple divorced amid much acrimony in 2008. The settlement equated to £17,000 for every day of their marriage.

In May, Sir Paul proposed to Shevell, 51, with a vintage Cartier engagement diamond ring. She was previously married for more than 20 years to Bruce Blakeman, a lawyer, with whom she has a son, Arlen, 19.

Sir Paul's spokesman says the details are "speculation", but declines to comment further. "

Joey, what really scares jb?

Rumors were flying before tonight's U2 360 concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey, that Bruce Springsteen -- who was at the show with Patti Scialfa -- would join U2 on stage at some point. That never materialized, but the New Jersey crowd got a treat with what might have been the longest show of the tour. U2 played for well over 2.5 hours and played 26 songs rather than the normal 24. Check out the complete U2 360 East Rutherford setlist on U2tours.com, and be sure to share your photos and/or review if you were at the show.

and this!

WASHINGTON -- A newly released poll of Jewish American voters provides some comforting news to an Obama administration working feverishly to keep its popularity high among that group. Despite having a sharply unfavorable opinion of how he has handled the Israeli-Palestinian crisis -- and offering a mixed review of his handling of the economy -- Jewish Americans remain committed to President Obama heading into the 2012 campaign.

The national survey, which was sponsored by the progressive-leaning, pro-Israel group J Street and designed by prominent Democratic pollster Jim Gerstein, has Jewish Americans approving of the president’s job performance by a 20-percentage point margin, with 60 percent approving and 40 percent disapproving.

Paul McCartney Animated Feature on the Horizon

Now that Paul McCartney's two night stand at Yankee Stadium is over, more news from the ex Beatle.

I am told that McCartney has a new project in the works. Sources say that former New Line honchos Michael Lynn and Bob Shaye's Unique Films has been on the inside track for an animated musical film based on McCartney's children's book, "High in the Clouds." The book, co-written with Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh, was published in 2005 by Faber and Faber.

It's described on Wikipedia thusly: "When the characters' home, Woodland, is attacked by human development, a young squirrel (Wirral) is left without a home and without his mother. Guided by his mother's final words and aided by his fellow animal friends he meets on his journey, Wirral goes on a quest for the secret island sanctuary of Animalia. Wirral finds himself in an epic journey filled with evil realities and wild dreams. He and his friends experience tragedy, war, joy and victory, all in the name of freedom and peace." I've heard that McCartney has written several songs already and that work may be commencing soon. He can always throw in "Mary Had a Little Lamb" from the early 70s, too. But a McCartney animated children's movie? That's gold, kids.

By the way, Billy Joel did show up on Saturday night as I promised. Irrepressible Billy recreated his guest spot from 2009 on "I Saw Her Standing There." Friday vs. Saturday: the first night got "Hello Goodbye," the second "Magical Mystery Tour" as openers. First night: "I've Just Seen a Face." Saturday: "I'm Looking Through You." One reviewer from a major outlet must have fallen asleep at some point. "Let it Be" comes toward the end, not in the middle, of the show. McCartney's enthusiasm and unflagging work ethic are astonishing. Next June he turns 70, and you know there will be a blow out show somewhere to commemorate it. In the coming year he may also get married to the very lovely Nancy Shevell. "

Joey, I don't think jb's gonna make it.

St. Paul, Minn. — It's estimated 60,000 people plan to see the U2 concert Saturday at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium. It'll be the stadium's first concert, and U officials chose to start with one of rock and roll's highest profile bands.

U2 was supposed to perform at TCF Bank Stadium last summer, but the show was postponed after then 50-year-old front man Bono slipped a disc in his back.

Minnesota fans were left with a sense of longing.

Now, Bono's feeling better.

"Let's face it: he's got the best doctors in the world, and he's come back a better man for it, but us Irish are pretty tough you know," said Rocko Reedy, who has been U2's tour manager for the last 20 years.

When Reedy shows up in a town, that means Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. will soon follow.

Reedy sets the stage. For this tour, that means he's in charge of something the band calls "The Claw." It's a massive four-legged steel structure that's stands in the middle of TCF Bank stadium. It's about 2-stories tall, and blue with orange dots. The claw towers over the stage, giving the band access to all sides of the stadium.

Size is something Reedy is proud of.

"It's the biggest tour that's ever been produced —it's the largest sound system, largest video screen, largest stage, largest everything about it."

It's the biggest everything in a relatively new stadium that's never hosted a concert. But university officials said they are prepared for everything, including bad weather. There's a chance for severe thunderstorms Saturday evening.

Scott Ellison, the university's associate athletic director for facilities, said they have a plan for fans in the open air stadium.

"With the opening of the stadium we did a life safety plan in that is a evacuation for all scenarios -- weather, whatever might pop up," Ellison said. "If it's a thunderstorm and it's going to be lightning and hail, we'll probably try shelter in place, which is everybody into the concourse, into the bowels of the stadium, if it's worse than that, we'll probably evacuate out to outside buildings."

Whatever happens, Reedy said the band will keep playing.

"I have four Irishmen that are my bosses, but there's one boss above them, and he's up there and he calls the shots — especially when it comes to rain. "But I've seen these guy play in the driving rain, and the energy level just comes up."

And this concert will be worth the wait, Reedy said.

"When you're on a rollercoaster, the best part of the ride is right before you get to the end."

Minneapolis is the third-to-last stop on a two-and-a-half year tour. The band and crew are now like family, Reedy said, and that gives the performance an emotional charge.

"We have a staff of over 400 people out here with names like Bart and Rocko and Smasher, and all the rest of these guys that look like (professional wrestler) -type people," Reedy said. "But there's genuine love going on here, and it flows from the top."

"When you see guys hugging each other and saying 'I love you' and meaning it, there's a real family core going on here, and I'm going to miss it."

'When the night has come
'And the land is dark
'And the moon is the only light we'll see
'No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
'Just as long as you stand, stand by me...'

One of the stand-out moments in tonight's show in Minneapolis was when Bono brought on stage the Somali rapper K'naan to join in a duet of 'Stand By Me'.
'I want to introduce you to a very special spirit.
'Showing great leadership on behalf of his country, Somalia
'Get used to his name cos your going to hear it a lot...K'naan.'

The rapper, a former Twin Cities resident got quite a reception, as the stadium remembered the people of the Horn of Africa and that was followed by another poignant moment  introducing 'Stuck In A Moment': 'We wrote this for Michael Hutchence... but tonight you will understand when we play it for Amy Winehouse.'

Thunderstorms and severe weather were  forecast for today. We had rain in the morning and if it held off for the start of show, it was soon with us for the evening. But two years after buying their tickets,  nothing was going to stop the people  of The Twin Cities having a blast.
'Get on your boots in your fancy new stadium, handsome place for us to be hanging in tonight...'
Bono reminded us that Minneapolis was originally set to be the last night of the tour and the next two shows had  only been added when this leg was rescheduled. This show, however, marks 'the place to begin the end of tour party.'
'It's amazing to be on stage with these people,' he says. 'Really amazing. At the end of the last show I thought I heard thunder and saw lightning flash from behind me, I thought I 'd been hit by truck,
I thought Mike Tyson had jumped out... but it was Larry Mullen playing the drums.'
Then he felt the ground shaking beneath his feet and when he looked around it was the 'handsome Adam Clayton on bass, a force of nature'.
In this vision he also saw angels, 'some friendly, some wearing beanies but all creating chaos with a host of crazy harmonies.' Turned out it wasn't angels at all, 'it was The Edge on guitar and everything else...'
'And then I heard the voice of God .. and you know what God said?
'He said, 'If you think you're having fun now, wait till you get to Minneapolis...
'The end of tour party starts here...'

Didn't matter that by the time we reached 'Elevation' the rain was getting serious and continued pouring for 'Pride', 'Miss Sarajevo' and Zooropa'.  We were having a  wet and wonderful party. 'America in the rain, singing your heart out - and it's a beautiful heart'.
By 'Blinding Light's we were all 'singing in the rain' and so it continued: 'Don't know what's happening, but we like it,
'Just want to thank you for standing in the rain...'

'Despite all the bells and whistles,' reported The StarTribune,  first out of the blocks with their review of the show. 'U2 gave a performance that was both over-the-top and intimate, both epic and informal, both highfalutin' and fun.'

Did  you get wet in Minneapolis tonight? Were you singing in the rain? How was the start of the end of tour party for you? Add your own reviews and post your photos below  "

Fan on the run meets Macca in Detroit

Paul made a surprise visit before his Detroit concert to Hitsville Recording studios where the greatest Motown hits were recorded.

Lucky "Fan On Run" Rick Glover of Beatlefan magazine just happened leaving Hitsville when Paul's entourage pulled up.

"I was there just to see the building myself, said Rick. "As I was leaving, the cars pulled up."

Rick got a big hug from Paul who said, 'I always look for you' [at the gigs]".

Super fan Glover, who has been to a multitude of Macca concerts, always carries his "FANS ON THE RUN SIGN" which he holds up at every show he attends. You can read about his Macca adventures in Beatlefan Magazine.

Paul McCartney concert: A little luck, a lot of smiles -- even some tears

At times stirring, at times triumphant, and always irresistibly fun, this was Paul McCartney's night in Detroit.

Comerica Park, one of five stops on McCartney's summer stadium tour, was host to an evening of musical thrills and rich nostalgia for a spirited crowd of more than 30,000.

They'd gathered under the Detroit skyline for a long night of hits from the man who helped design the blueprint.

McCartney, trim and reciprocated with perhaps the most elastic and generous set he's ever played here, steering through a staggering array of Beatles classics, Wings hits and solo tunes.

Foreboding clouds and rumbles of thunder had greeted the multigenerational audience of families, older couples and young friends as they streamed into the stands ahead of the show. But in the minutes before McCartney took the stage at 8:30 p.m. - as "With a Little Luck" fittingly played over the PA - the sun began to break out in the distance.

A little luck, a little magic, a lot of smiles, even a few tears, as McCartney served up a set that launched with a bright "Hello Goodbye" and wound through nearly half a century of music.

The 69-year-old star, looser and chattier onstage than he's been in years, was a dependably delightful presence, pulling out the vintage Paul moves - fists pumping, fingers pointing, eyes winking at the audience.

"This is so cool," he said, pausing early to scan the crowd. "I'm gonna take a moment here to drink in these Detroit vibrations."

With fireball drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. an unmistakable presence in back, McCartney's veteran band provided the crisp ooohs on "All My Loving" and dark ahhhs on "Eleanor Rigby," wrapping their voices together for "Paperback Writer."

There was highlight upon highlight: There was a sterling "Maybe I'm Amazed," rousing "Let It Be," winsomely brisk "I've Just Seen a Face," punchy "Jet," jaunty "The Night Before," a charming "I Will," a racing "Back in the USSR."

The crowd roared as the regular set closed out with the reliable fanfare of "Hey Jude" and "Live and Let Die," punctuated with fireworks. As the show rolled past its 2-1/2 hour mark, McCartney led the band through an uptempo encore that included "Day Tripper" and "Get Back."

A second and final encore stayed on the Beatles theme, with the lilt of "Yesterday" rolling into the scalding energy of "Helter Skelter" into a glorious, show-wrapping run through the close of "Abbey Road": "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight" and a crackling "The End."

McCartney was energetic and versatile, heading to a piano when he wasn't with his Hofner bass or tapping a yummy collection of vintage guitars.

The performances were roundly top-notch, the occasional cracks in McCartney's voice more like little marks of ebullience, as on the high notes of "Let Me Roll It" and "Maybe I'm Amazed."

With a mix of enthusiasm and reverence, he talked about his visit to the Motown Historical Museum - the former studio complex on West Grand Boulevard that he called "the holy grail." (He'd spent about two hours there today, according to a museum official.)

"That took me back," he said, going on to recall his younger years studying Motown records to learn parts. He and his band then launched into a lively cover of Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike," picked "especially for Detroit," McCartney said.

He was in a reflective mood, dishing up anecdotes about Jimi Hendrix and late band mates John Lennon and George Harrison - including a ukulele-led rendition of the latter's "Something."

McCartney also referenced his first-ever trip to Detroit, with the Beatles in 1964.

"I was just thinking today about the first time we came over," he said. "The people of Detroit gave us a beautiful welcome -- just like you're giving us tonight."

July 25, 2011 -- The Detroit News

Paul McCartney takes Detroit by storm

Thunder and lightning raked across the sky over Comerica Park Sunday night, but it was no match for the fireworks Paul McCartney mustered onstage, both figuratively and literally.

His well-honed showmanship and impeccable music filled hearts and minds in the sold-out ballpark even before fireworks exploded over the stage during "Live and Let Die."

And he was a gracious visitor. McCartney gave heartfelt thanks to Detroit and Motown early on.

"We had a little time off today and we went to the Motown museum," McCartney told the crowd, six songs into the set. "Holy grail! When I was listening to records as a kid in Liverpool, learning the songs 'You Really Got a Hold on Me' (by the Miracles) and 'Money' (by Barrett Strong), wow! So we'd like to do a song we don't normally do, for Detroit and for Motown, one of my favorites by Mr. Marvin Gaye."

And with that, he led his tight band into "Hitchhike," one of Gaye's early hits. "Thank you Detroit, and thank you Motown!" the former Beatle said after a rendition rhythmic enough to make a Funk Brother smile.

Rain showers cooled off the audience earlier, and a boom of thunder hit just before 8 p.m., prompting the crowd to cheer - what a way to go, right? Watching an original Beatle from a $200 seat as lightning arcs across downtown Detroit.

But the rain let up by the time McCartney took the stage. He's racked up 69 years but looks as trim as when he first played Olympia Stadium in Detroit in 1964, a brash 22-year-old.

(Yes, at this point he'd have to sing "When I Was 64").

He strode onto the stage at 8:30 sharp on black Beatle boots, clutching his Hofner "Beatle" bass guitar.

"You say yes, I say no you say stop but I say go go go" were the first words we heard as he kicked off with the Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye."

Dressed in a black collarless jacket with red piping down the front over a white button-up shirt, McCartney shucked his jacket early on to reveal thin suspenders.

At one point, the former Beatle stopped the show, to "take a minute to drink in these Detroit vibrations," he said, nodding and smiling as the crowd cheered, wetting his finger and then waggling it in the universal sign for "hot"!

Let there be no mistake, McCartney can still sing. His voice has deepened over the years from the sparkling, high Irish tenor of the '60s, but there is a burnished suppleness to it that serves him well over what would be a long show for a 30-year-old. And in a pinch he can evince a fab winsomeness with a well-chosen high note.

There is no substitute, not even the Beatles' "Love" show, for singing the "Nah nah nah" chorus along with the real thing. For three hours, we were all fab again.

July 25, 2011 -- CBS Local News WWJ (Detroit)

Paul McCartney Rocks Comerica Park

Well, he's 69 now and Paul McCartney is still going strong. And, after more than three decades he's back in Detroit. The former Beatle will be in concert at Comerica Park Sunday night.

Speaking live on WWJ, Tom Wilson, President of Olympia Entertainment, says McCartney's backstage requirements are not too unusual.

Wilson says McCartney's team is "meticulous," ensuring that they deliver a great show every single night.

"As everybody knows, Paul became a vegetarian 30 yrs ago, with his late wife, Linda, and that continues, so a lot of requests for the crew and for Paul it's vegetarian meals," said Wilson.

Wilson has seen a number of McCartney shows, including several at the Palace of Auburn Hills. He expects it to be a great show.

Wilson told WWJ that if there are thunderstorms, than the show will be halted, but if there's rain, we'll all get a little wet, and maybe that'll feel good after this week.  "

Joey, this ain't good for flank pain.

It was the beginning and the end in the same night.

U2's concert -- nah, the Bonolicious spectacular -- Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium ushered in a new era of big-time outdoor stadium concerts (after a 33-year, Metrodome-dominated hiatus). It was also one of the last nights on U2's record-setting two-year, 110-concert (only two more to go) 360° Tour, which will gross an unprecedented $717 million.

"I think this is the place to begin the end of the tour party," said Bono.

Funny thing about the 360 Tour in Minneapolis -- it went full circle in the Twin Cities outdoor stadium concert history. The last biggie in 1978 at the old Met Stadium featured the Eagles and a hard-driving rain during Steve Miller's set in front of 65,000 people. On Saturday, the drizzle eventually turned into a deluge, and Bono and the boys played on, getting pelted by the downpour, along with nearly 60,000 jubilant fans.

"Unbelievable," Bono declared after "Walk On," "I cannot get over this."

Yes, it was an unforgettable show -- for U2's unstoppable fortitude, uplifting music and the invigorating rain.

Despite having the most expensive touring production in the history of popular music, the $25 million stage came with no roof. So U2 improvised with equipment (Bono held a U.S. flag umbrella for a bit and bassist Adam Clayton took his shirt off) and in song (with snippets of the Beatles' "Rain," "Singing in the Rain," and, of course, Prince's "Purple Rain").

Before the rain came, it almost felt as if the much-hyped stage was going to be the star of the show, not Bono or the music. Dubbed the Claw, the stage looked like a collision of a spider and a spaceship or a crab and a cathedral. The mammoth four-legged monster afforded the fans a 360-degree view of the band.

Despite all the bells and whistles, U2 gave a performance that was both over-the-top and intimate, both epic and informal, both highfalutin' and fun. The quartet kept it intimate by playing on a relatively small (for a football stadium) stage, surrounded by a circle walkway that every band member (including Larry Mullen Jr. on conga once) used to good effect.

Moreover, there were quieter musical moments, most notably "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," a duet by Bono and the Edge (who unleashed a stunning falsetto). In introducing the song, Bono mentioned that it was written for INXS' late singer Michael Hutchence but on this day, it would be dedicated to British pop star Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday.

Just two voices and an acoustic guitar made it feel like a living room performance -- inside a football stadium.

The Edge's wondrous electric guitar framed every song. Often sounding like a one-man orchestra, his vibe was less majestic than on previous tours but just as potent. He went for wah-wah funk on "Mysterious Ways," chilling sweetness on "Beautiful Day," punky slashing on "The Fly."

Bono, 51, came on like a rock icon, in leather jacket and pants, with his Tom Hanks hairdo and tinted glasses. But he was also very in the moment. The Irishman was well aware of where he was, acknowledging the new stadium and bringing out a former Twin Cities resident, Somali rapper K'naan, to sing a bit of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" at the end of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

The set list was heavy on hits, with a few tunes from 2009's No Line on the Horizon sprinkled in. There were many highlights but none brighter than the closing "Moment of Surrender." Bono asked for all the lights in the stadium turned off, as he delivered the soulful hymn, which took on a new meaning on this night, about U2 and their fans refusing to surrender to the rain.
