" The Jew  "

" Scattered by God's avenging hand, afflicted and forlorn,
Sad wanderers from their pleasant Land, do Judah's children mourn;
and e'en in Christian countries, few breathe thoughts of pity for the Jew.
Yet listen, Gentile, do you love the Bible's precious page?
Then let your heart with kindness move to Israel's heritage;
who traced those lines of love for you?
Each sacred writer was a Jew.
And then as years and ages passed, and Nations rose and fell,
though clouds and darkness oft were cast o'er captive Israel
the oracles of God for you were kept in safety by the Jew.
And when the great Redeemer came for guilty man to bleed.
He did not take an angel's name, no, born of Abraham's seed,
Jesus, who gave His life for you -
the gentle Saviour - was a Jew.
And though His own received Him not, and turned in pride away,
whence is the Gentile's happier lot? Are you more just than they?
No! God in pity turned to you - have you no pity for the Jew?
Go then, and bend you knee to pray for Israel's ancient race;
ask the dear Saviour every day to call them by His grace.
Go, for a debt of love is due
from Christian Gentiles to the Jew.  "

" There are no two ways to say it: I love touring. It's one of the most interesting parts of the job. Sure, the days are long and the schedule can be gruelling but it's always a total blast to be on the road with Paul. Since my last report, I've been particularly fortunate to accompany Paul to South America for a series of concerts I'll never forget.

The action kicked off in Peru on 9th May with Paul's first ever show in the city, which was greeted with incredible scenes of Macca mania. Like last year in South America, hundreds of fans once again set up a makeshift village outside the stadium days before the show started to ensure they got the best possible position at the front once the doors opened. Must be a Latin thing! Similar scenes greeted us when we moved on to Chile two days later for Paul's first performance in the country since 1993. Thrilling fans who had flocked from across Chile for the event, Paul played a rocking set that lasted nearly three hours and had many in tears -- particularly when the man himself addressed the crowds in their native Spanish. Fans and media even camped out overnight outside the hotel afterwards hoping for a glimpse of Paul -- with one group of fans even storming the lobby in the early hours singing Macca's hits at the top of their voices! Didn't get much sleep that night!

Two sell out shows in Rio followed, Paul's first in the city in 21 years. To say the city was excited was something of an understatement! I travelled with Michelle Lawley who looks after travel, security chief Mark Hamilton, Paul 'Wix' Wickens and the tour videographer Charlie Lightening and within minutes of leaving the airport on the way to the hotel, I'd spied at least five huge Macca billboards! The local PR rep had called me to say fans camped outside the venue were singing Paul's songs at full volume and the version of 'Let It Be' I could hear in the background certainly sounded very impressive!

The show itself was certainly all they hoped for and the coverage in the days that followed was nothing short of spectacular. Paul was on the front of all the major newspapers and, thanks to Google Translator, I discovered the reviews couldn't have been more positive either. Mind you, even with my terrible Spanish, I could work out headlines such as 'Monumental', 'El Grande Del Rock', 'Beatlemania Remecio Lima', 'Macca El Concierto Mas Esperado Toda Nuestra Historia' and 'Espectaculos' were only ever going to be good.

There was no time for Paul to rest after the shows though. He returned to London to prepare for something very dear to his heart, the exhibition of Linda McCartney's photographs that was held at the Phillips de Pury Gallery in early June. The exhibition featured 26 images taken from the newly published Taschen book 'Linda McCartney: Life In Photos'. Made in collaboration with Paul and his children, the book is a moving testament to Linda and her exquisite photography.

As Stella McCartney explained on the evening "I think the whole thing has an underlying sadness to us as a family, because you remember what an amazing woman she was and you really see that through her eyes and through her work. I personally found it quite fulfilling and quite humorous. The humour in the book and the way she saw us, especially in the family life was really refreshing to me."

Paul added: "We used to say, 'When are we ever going to look at these?' - because you don't. You take all of these family snapshots and they remain in your camera, or in your drawer. So we said that we would choose one day a year and we'll just get all of the scrap books out, and we did that a bit. But as Stell said, this whole process was great for that. We had all the old photos and finally we got to look at them all."

Paul and his daughters Stella and Mary visited the exhibition for a private view with friends and family including Sir Peter Blake, Jo Whiley, David Gilmour, Chrissie Hynde, David Walliams, Tracey Emin, Sam Taylor Wood, Aaron Johnson and Jools Holland. Afterwards, the team and Paul's friends went for a private dinner at The Wellington Arch on Hyde Park Corner to reminisce, laugh together and enjoy the amazing views in a fantastic location. As Paul said to me on the night, it was certainly "a memory location" as it was such a unique and unforgettable place to be. A very fitting end to a special evening

Of course, Paul was back on a plane returning to the Up and Coming Tour in the blink of an eye afterwards. This time, he found himself in Las Vegas, where he attended the 5th anniversary of Cirque du Soleil's Love show and played two huge live dates at the famous MGM Grand to bring his record-breaking Up and Coming Tour to a spectacular end. Fans couldn't believe their eyes as they watched Macca deliver one of his best shows yet watched by none other than Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, George Harrison's widow Olivia and legendary Beatles producer, George Martin. All stood and joined in as Paul sang 'Give Peace A Chance' in a scene that fans present will definitely never forget. Critics were bowled over too, with the Las Vegas Review-Journal declaring "Some thing's are ageless, and McCartney's one of them."

Certainly, there's no question that Macca has more energy than the rest of us put together. Within days of finishing the Up and Coming Tour in Las Vegas, Paul astounded us all by announcing the first dates on a brand new tour, to be titled 'On The Run'. The tour kicks off with two nights at Yankee Stadium in New York on the 15th and 16th July and we can't wait to see what Paul has up his sleeve this time. He's never failed to surprise us yet

Fans had one final treat in June too with the long-awaited release of 'McCartney I' and 'McCartney II'. Initially released a decade apart, the albums were Paul's first two solo releases after The Beatles without Wings or Linda and were re-mastered especially for the reissue.

"The nice thing about re-mastering, full stop, is that you can hear more," Paul says. "It just makes the quality better -- it makes you feel like you're there -- it sounds how it sounded when I made the record. It's a pure, more accurate sound and quality. Whatever the album has got going for it is exaggerated by being able to hear it better. So, it's got a kind of indie thing -- what would be called now, an indie thing -- but for me it was just knocking around, making some sound. Not worrying about how it was going to turn out, because with the Beatles it was more like, this is the next Beatles single. With this it was -- I wasn't really doing it with anything in mind and then other people were saying 'Oh, so that's your new album is it?' -- I was persuaded."

The releases were marked by Paul appearing on the cover of MOJO magazine and gaining a mountain of positive reviews, with respected internet music magazine The Quietus calling the albums "two outstanding records of his solo career." We couldn't agree more!

Finally, we've always known Macca has fans in high places (hello President Obama!) but word reached us this week that another musical legend has been talking of his admiration for Paul. Following his festival-conquering set at Glastonbury, none other than the iconic Paul Simon told one newspaper that he believed Macca was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Not bad coming from a man who wrote 'The Sound of Silence', 'Mrs Robinson and 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' to name just a few.

It's hard to believe that as I write, Paul is busy preparing for the start of his new tour in just a few weeks. Who knows where it will take us in the coming months? If the last year has shown me anything, it's that I can never second guess what's around the corner working for the most popular boss on the planet! I'll do my best to keep you posted as soon as it happens though. "

Ever hear that zen story about the buddhist monks that have taken a vow of chastity? They are walking along together through the woods and come upon a beautiful woman who can't cross the river.

One monk hesitates, but the other does not and just lifts her up in his arms and carries her with him across the river to the other side. She is thankful.

The two monks then start again on their journey, but the one monk is very upset with his friend, he can't believe he touched the woman and lifted her. He is upset for the rest of the long walk, and finally he can't hold it in anymore and he turns to the other monks and says How can you do what you did, we took a vow of chastity, we are not allowed to touch a woman, and you just did.

And the other monk calmly and peacefully smiled at his friend and said:

I only carried her briefly across the river. I put her down at the riverbank.
Yet you have carried her for many hours and are still carrying her. Put her down.

A Gentle Reminder of Paul McCartney’s Survival and Vitality
By JON PARELES
Published: July 16, 2011

The cheerful, childlike doggerel of “Hello Goodbye” — ”I don’t know why you say goodbye/I say hello” — struck an unexpected note as Paul McCartney sang it on Friday night to start his two-night stand at Yankee Stadium. “Who is this Derek Jeter guy?” Mr. McCartney asked. “Somebody said he’s got more hits than me.”

Paul McCartney performed a two-and-a-half hour show at Yankee Stadium Friday night.

At 69, Mr. McCartney is not saying goodbye but touring stadiums and playing marathon concerts. Friday’s set ran two and a half hours, with Mr. McCartney constantly onstage, and it had 35 songs, not counting a few additional excerpts. He played half a dozen instruments (though he didn’t show off his drumming), sang with only a few scrapes in the voice that’s familiar worldwide, and looked as if he was having a boyish romp as he navigated what endure as some of rock’s oddest hits. His hair grew more tousled with every song.

The set drew on Mr. McCartney’s various outlets from the 1960s on: the Beatles, Wings, his solo albums and his once-pseudonymous project the Fireman.

His concerts now are a gentle reminder of his survival and vitality. He paid tribute to John Lennon — with a lovely, imagined afterlife conversation, “Here Today” — and to George Harrison, starting Harrison’s “Something” by playing it on a ukulele Mr. Harrison gave him. The exultant “Back in the U.S.S.R.” has outlasted not only the corporate name B.O.A.C., the airline mentioned in the lyrics, but the Soviet Union as well.

As always, melody let Mr. McCartney put across musical and verbal non sequiturs few other songwriters could get away with: songs like “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five,” with its sudden interlude of Beach Boys harmony, or “Let ’Em In,” which switches from piano bounce to military tattoo, with whistling, and has lyrics that juxtapose Martin Luther and Phil and Don. (The Everly Brothers?) Melody easily carried Mr. McCartney through idiom after idiom: toe-tapping country in “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” hard rock in “Helter Skelter,” lilting ballad in “I Will,” something like ska in “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and the quasi-Slavic oompah in “Mrs. Vandebilt.” (Mr. McCartney announced that they loved it in Ukraine.)

There was more than a little familiarity to the concert for anyone who attended Mr. McCartney’s 2009 shows at that other new ballpark, the Mets’ Citi Field, or listened to and watched the resulting live album of CDs and a DVD, “Good Evening New York City” (Hear Music). Once again he wore suspenders over his white shirt. His band lineup hasn’t changed, with Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums, Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson on guitars and Paul (Wix) Wickens on keyboards. Two-thirds of the songs were the same, often in similar groupings and with the same arrangements and first-time surprises, like appending Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” to “Let Me Roll It,” or segueing “A Day in the Life” into “Give Peace a Chance” — a V-sign waving epiphany for the crowd — or explaining that the civil-rights movement inspired “Blackbird.”

But through his career Mr. McCartney has been reluctant to tamper much with arrangements from his albums. And it’s unlikely he’d want to deprive a full stadium of the chance to sing along with the na-nas of “Hey Jude,” or that he’d skip the pyrotechnics and fireworks display for “Live and Let Die,” or that he’d omit songs like “Yesterday,” “Let It Be” and “Band on the Run” (performed with video footage from the photo session for the album cover).

For freshness Mr. McCartney tossed off a Beatles song that, he announced, he had never performed live: “The Night Before,” with its skiffle bounce and barbershop harmonies. And some of the songs that weren’t on the Citi Field set lists were the most vital ones: particularly “Maybe I’m Amazed,” from his newly reissued 1970 solo debut album, “McCartney” (MPL/Hear Music), with its startling harmonic swerves and a vocal that fervently illuminated the song’s affection, happy incredulity and deep need.

Mr. McCartney has a trouper’s ability to make the routine look and sound spontaneous. His voice reveled in the songs, hinting at little improvisatory variations. After them he raised his instruments overhead in a mixture of exuberance and pride in musical craftsmanship. (When he sang “I’ve Got a Feeling,” the video screen didn’t show a heart — it showed pulsating speakers.) He perseveres, and entertains, by directly reconnecting to his songs across the decades and still having fun

Paul McCartney and Billy Joel Rock Out at Yankee Stadium
In surprise appearance, Joel joins McCartney for 'I Saw Her Standing There'

Thirty songs into his set at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night, Paul McCartney seemed like he was just getting started - and then he welcomed "a friend of New York and a friend of Yankee Stadium" onstage. It was Billy Joel, wearing a black jacket and baseball cap, who promptly sat down at the grand piano. "Are you ready for this?" McCartney asked him. "Yeah, man!" Joel responded. They kicked into a rowdy "I Saw Her Standing There," trading verses between Joel's furious piano solo, which he played grinning like the Beatles-crazed teenager he once was.

It was a perfect surprise for McCartney's second and final night at the stadium, a perfect warm July night that clouds had threatened early on. McCartney and Joel have collaborated frequently in recent years: McCartney surprised fans when Joel closed out Shea Stadium in July 2008, and Joel returned the favor the following summer appearing onstage when McCartney baptized Citi Field.

But Joel's presence was particularly welcome this time; he hasn't played a proper concert in two years and puzzled fans when he abruptly canceled the publication of his memoirs in March. When asked weeks ago if he'd join McCartney at Yankee Stadium, he said, "If he wants me to play, I'll play. You don't say no to Paul McCartney."

Like those Citi Field shows and all of McCartney's shows since he reemerged on the road in 2002 after years without touring he gave the people what they wanted. Joined by his four-piece band, he packed his three-hour set with quick blasts of Sixties pop ("Magical Mystery Tour," "All My Loving," "Drive My Car") and classic winding epics ( "The Long and Winding Road" and "Band on the Run"). And there was plenty of his classic cheesy humor. "Who's this guy Derek Jeter?" he asked the crowd. "I hear he has more hits than me!"

In recent years, McCartney has opted for sporadic runs of shows rather than full-on, consecutive-date world tours. In turn, he seems to relish the stage all the more when he does play live. He regularly played up his presence, lifting his classic Hofner bass above his head, air boxing, and mock-shaming the crowd for enjoying the over-the-top pyro in "Live and Let Die." Early on, he removed his military-style jacket to reveal suspenders, inciting several audience howls. "That's my big wardrobe change of the night," he said. "Hopefully there will be no malfunctions!"

The acoustic portion of the set featured gorgeous renditions of "I'm Looking Through You," "I Will" and "Blackbird." "How many people here have tried to learn that one on guitar?" he said; around one-third of the crowd in floor seats raised their hands.

He paid tribute to John Lennon "Here Today," written as a lost conversation with John Lennon and began "Something" on George Harrison's ukulele, until it grew into a gorgeous full band arrangement. These moments and several others are familiar to those who have seen McCartney in recent years, but it's hard not to enjoy them not matter how many times you've seen the show.

Still, there were several surprises most of all, Help's folky, dramatic "The Night Before," performed live for the first time, well, the night before. He also busted out several Wings classics; their 1974 rocker "Junior's Farm" and the groovy "Let Em In" and "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five." McCartney rocked out especially hard to "Mrs. Vandebilt" -- which he noted was a big hit when he played it in Ukraine.

McCartney ended with a homestretch of hits: "Let It Be," a "Hey Jude" sing-along and a raucous "I've Got a Feeling," which after finishing, the band sped into double-time and jammed off a James Gang-style blues riff. His third and final return to the stage featured "Yesterday," "Helter Skelter" and Abbey Road's closing medley. "I told you we were going to have a good time," he said during the encore. It was an offhand comment -- but it's still astonishing to see how much McCartney, at 69, still cares.

A peek inside Paul's concert

Paul McCartney's nearly three- hour Yankee Stadium con cert Friday was not a bad little event. Be sides future wife Nancy Shevell, future father-in-law Mike Shevell, former in-law Vanessa Eastman and Hollywood-handsome Hal Steinbrenner, it was 44,000 screaming fans. Top ticket -- $280. Paul & Co. reserved three rows. Grandstand cheapos with close-up views of Canarsie -- $34.

Here's what nobody saw: his hospitality suite in the sub-basement frozen zone. Large, red tape arrows lined the floor with felt pen marking "Wardrobe . . . Dressing room . . . " The previous Sunday night, as his equipment arrived, massive gates clanged shut behind, and iron barriers sprang up in front.

Uninvited multi-ton vehicles would've gotten locked in tighter than Kim Kardashian's bra. He rehearsed last week. Thursday, dress rehearsal. Friday afternoon, sound check. At 8:30 McCartney showed via a hidden backstage entrance, and a cart chugged him up the ramp. Listen, earning a few million every night ain't easy.

Stage, lights, audio, massive equipment rested on thick insulation padding to protect the grass. Fox-TV's chief White House correspondent Ed Henry, Nicole and Joel Klein, socialite Chappy Morris, Francine Lefrak and Rick Friedberg, 9/11 hero Joe Scafidi, looked at McCartney. Yankees president Randy Levine, who would not turn off his cellphone when the Queen received him at Buckingham Palace, alone looked down.

"Weather's great," he said. "Soaking rain hurts the field. We'll deconstruct the whole McCartney operation in one day."

Juicing up the Eighth Army of guard types, anti-terrorist types, NYPD types, FDNY types, doghandler types, and McCartneyniks were 550 handpicked security officers with blue shirts, khaki pants, earphones, walkie-talkies. And their boss? Nifty Lena Watson. No Twinky, she told me: "I personally check each one's schooling, background, and ID. Compared to when I was a Rikers security officer, this is a piece of cake."

P.S. The Yankees crew praised polite, friendly, low-maintenance Sir Beatle. "

Joey, tell jb to set the vcr to record.

If you're planning to tune in tonight to see Bono & The Edge talk to David Letterman on The Late Show, you won't be disappointed. They're the only interview guests on the show and spend three full segments with Dave talking about the U2 360 tour, Bono's injury and, of course, the Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark production.

But according to a friend of ours that attended the taping, there's also a nice surprise: an acoustic performance of "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of." It happened during a conversation about songwriting, when Edge suddenly reached behind his chair and grabbed an acoustic guitar so the two of them could sing the song. Bono explained to Dave that the song was written about late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence -- and also admitted that Larry called it a "sissy song." After Bono & Edge wrapped up their chat with Dave, the Spider-Man cast came out and performed "A Freak Like Me Needs Company" during the show's final segment.

The Late Show with David Letterman airs on CBS stations at 11:35 pm ET/PT. Thx to Suzy for the report from inside the Sullivan Theatre!
