Joey, what's the fucking point?

Tyaransen asks Bono about a release date for U2's next album. Says Bono:

I think next fall. I mean, as always, it'll be ready when it's finished, although I never feel like a U2 album gets finished, we sort of finish the songs live. But when it's nearly finished, we'll release it. And that will be probably next fall. We want to get it right. I mean, look, why would anyone want another U2 album? Lots of people have them, why would they want another one? It just better be really great, and the reason why we didn't put out Songs of Ascent was that we felt that the next thing people need to hear from U2 is not an art project, that it has a rock 'n' roll heart, even if it's not rock 'n' roll music. It has the songs, you play them live.

"Hey Joey, what's new"

1. Several songs

By my count, nine songs that I heard in Denver were not in the Las Vegas setlist. (I'm not including "Magnificent" as a new song, even though the version they're playing now is quite different from what I heard in 2009.) On Saturday, seven of the first 13 songs U2 played were not played the last time I saw them. Perhaps the most notable new song of all is "Zooropa," a song that was played in the U.S. for the first time in Denver.

2. Merchandise

Obviously, the tour T-shirts are updated with the new dates for the current tour. But there were also items I don't recall seeing before. See our recent blog post, PHOTOS: U2 360 2011 Tour Merchandise, for a full look. I liked the white/red U2 360 shirt that's numbered "9" in this photo:

3. Intermission video

The old video of a clock counting down (at an increasingly rapid pace) is gone, and now the intermission in between the opening act and U2 is a video that shows the current time in various cities around the world ("What time is it in the world?") as well as a variety of factoids. This video continued for 30+ minutes before it began to replay any factoids.

4. No more BlackBerry

You couldn't go anywhere without seeing a BlackBerry logo during the 2009 North American shows. They were outside, inside and probably backstage, too. But now? Not a single BlackBerry logo anywhere in the stadium. The sound/mixing desk is now covered with the U2 360, ONE Campaign and Amnesty International logos/names.

5. Aung San Suu Kyi video message

You know the old Desmond Tutu video was getting old when fans could recite it word-for-word in the GA line, complete with the rolling Rs when he said "Grrrrrreat!" That video has been replaced with a video greeting from the recently freed Aung San Suu Kyi, making for a powerful moment immediately after U2 plays "Walk On" in her honor.

6. Amnesty International lamps in "Walk On"

Speaking of "Walk On," there's still a small army of volunteers that walk on the stage while U2 plays. But rather than holding Suu Kyi masks in front of their faces, the volunteers are carrying Amnesty International lamps. When they leave, the volunteers place the lamps on the stage in front of them, and the lamps stay there as U2 begins the encore. It's a cool image with the lights circling the outer stage.

7. LED jackets

Before "Zooropa," the whole band does a quick change into new jackets that debuted in Denver. Each jacket has LED lights all over the front, back and arms -- and the lights flicker on and off as the band plays several songs. It's a pretty cool effect. Here's how it looked during "City Of Blinding Lights" on Saturday.

8. U2 Green Team

The band has taken some hits since the tour began in 2009 for its environmental impact. One new, small gesture in that direction was the appearance Saturday of the "U2 Green Team" outside the stadium. It's a group of local volunteers who spend about 90 minutes cleaning up the mess in the GA line. Their reward? No cash, but a free ticket to the show.

There were other new things that happened during the show, but these are the main ones that caught my eye. Aside from the show itself being generally fantastic, it was nice to see something quite different from what I remember seeing in 2009.

(c) @U2, 2011.

" May 25, 2011 -- Chicago Sun-Times

Paul McCartney coming to Wrigley Field? (FIRST reported by The Macca Report on May 11th)

Paul McCartney's long road might be winding through Wrigley Field this summer.

A source in local event production tells the Sun-Times the Cubs are angling for two concerts by the former Beatle at Wrigley Field, possibly July 31 and Aug. 1.

Neither the Cubs nor McCartney's public relations agency would confirm the dates.

"We've heard those dates, as well," said Bennett Lawson of Ald. Tom Tunney's (44th) office. "We can't confirm it. The Cubs haven't come to us with a performer or specific dates. We know they would like to do something this summer."

The Cubs are out of town July 26-Aug. 4.

"The schedule is tighter for them [this year] than in previous years," Lawson said. "They need a certain time for set up and take down and it has to be June, July or August. We still need City Council approval, which can happen quickly."

Thus far, the only 2011 McCartney concert officially announced is a June 10 stop at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

McCartney is currently on tour in South America, completing another leg of his Up and Coming world tour that began last year. Many concerts on that tour have been announced piecemeal, and not always very far in advance.

After launching concerts in the historic North Side ballpark with a Jimmy Buffett show in 2005, the Cubs agreed to schedule shows at Wrigley every other year. However, after the Police played Wrigley in 2007, programming increased with two concerts in 2009 (Elton John and Billy Joel, and Rascal Flatts) and one late last summer (the Dave Matthews Band, Sept. 17-18).

McCartney was expected to be a Wrigley performer last year. The Dave Matthews dates took place after an encore Elton John & Billy Joel tour collapsed in the planning stages.

McCartney was last in Chicago playing two shows, Oct. 18-19, 2005, at the United Center.

The concert would be McCartney's first stop in a Chicago baseball stadium since Aug, 20, 1965, when the Beatles played on a plywood stage set up in front of the center field scoreboard at Comiskey Park.

That stop was part of a two week tour that included gigs at the now-razed baseball stadiums Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and Candlestick Park in San Francisco. A year later the Beatles appeared together for the last time at Candlestick, now the home of the San Francisco 49ers football team. "

"  By the time U2's tour wraps in November in Omaha ,  Nebraska, it will have passed the $1.8 Billion mark.

360 will have sold 19 million tickets to 110 shows, which will be enough to capture the "highest attended tour ever" record as well. The Rolling Stones also currently hold that record as well, with 6.4 million tickets sold for their Voodoo Lounge tour.  "

Steve Martin: McCartney slammed my vocals

Sir Paul McCartney took lead vocals on Steve Martin's track Best Love, telling Steve he has a "terrible" voice.

Music icon Paul teamed up with Steve for the song, which appears on the latter's latest album Rare Bird Alert.

As much as Paul appreciated the track, which is about marriage, he didn't think too much of actor/musician Steve's vocals and decided he should take lead.

"Paul arrived [at the session] and said, 'You know, when you said you were a terrible singer, I thought you were being humble, but you weren't,'" laughed Steve in an interview with guardian.co.uk.

Steve enjoys singing, although his true talent lies in playing the banjo and piano. He is also a famously gifted comic, achieving success in stand-up and appearing in hits such as The Pink Panther movies. The star always tries to bring a little humour when he performs, although insists music is at the heart of every concert.

"I've never advertised that it's comedy," he added. "I'm sneaking in a bit more because I never want people to be disappointed. And I don't feel that they do. They leave in a really good mood, and informed, in some way."

Joey, can you fax jb the Winnipeg set list?

Main Set: Even Better Than The Real Thing, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots - Oh Canada, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World - Where Have All The Flowers Gone, All I Want Is You, Stay, Beautiful Day - Heart of Gold, Pride, Miss Sarajevo, Zooropa, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, I'll Go Crazy (remix) - Discotheque - Life During Wartime - Psycho Killer - Please, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone, Happy Birthday

Encore(s): One, Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Where the Streets Have No Name, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You

Comments: The Royal Canadian Air Force does a flyover shortly before the show starts. The fan-read poem before Beautiful Day this time is actually the lyrics to You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Winnipeg's Bachman Turner Overdrive. At the end of the main set, Bono leads the crowd in singing Happy Birthday for Amnesty International, which is 50 years old this year. Although Moment of Surrender is on the printed setlist, the show ends after With or Without You.

Paul McCartney: 'The Beatles could have been lost to the Army'

Paul McCartney has revealed that The Beatles almost would never have been formed if they hadn't narrowly missed having to join the Army.

The group started out in 1960 - which was the year that compulsory National Service was finally abolished in the UK for men aged 18 to 51.

He told the Radio Times: 'A couple of years earlier, we would have been in the Army, and it's very doubtful that The Beatles would have formed.

'We would have been at Aldershot, or wherever, in various camps, and might not have even met.'

He added that as young men, he and bandmates John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison didn't understand how badly their hometown of Liverpool had been damaged by World War II.

'The places we played we called 'bombies', only later realising these were bombsites,' he explained.

'It still didn't click with me. It was only later I thought: 'Oh! There was a house there. A bomb destroyed it - and now we're playing football on it'.'   "
