" December 31, 2010 -- Rolling Stone

Merle Haggard, a Kennedy Honor recipient, talks about what it was like to be sitting next to Paul at the Kennedy Honors

RS: What was it like hanging out with Paul McCartney?

Haggard: He's Paul McCartney, man. You can't forget that he wrote those songs. That kept going through my mind: I'm an aspiring songwriter and sat beside the guy that wrote "Yesterday." I recorded that.

Some guys are famous for some songs you don't remember, but that's not the case there. When they started "Hey Jude," with this wonderful orchestra, the building came apart. Everybody in the audience was singing it. It was a chiller.  "

It was a homecoming of sorts, but one fit for rock royalty. The historic Dromoland Castle flung open its doors in extraordinary circumstances this week for returning global superstars U2.

Despite being closed for Christmas, staff at the five-star hotel went back to work just for one night on Monday to welcome U2 singer Bono and guitarist Edge. The rockers had their travel plans disrupted by snow and needed somewhere suitably palatial to hole up for the night.

The stay came about after U2's Principal Management contacted the 16th Century castle, where a luxury suite costs €950 a night, to ask if they could put up some VIPs.

Dromoland Castle manager Mark Nolan said: "Principal Management told us the band had been flying back to Ireland from the latest leg of their tour in Australia. But because of snow their flight had been diverted to Shannon.

Bono had asked if it was possible to spend a night in Dromoland Castle before returning to Dublin."

Mr. Nolan had to tell U2's management that Dromoland Castle was closed for Christmas -- but said he would see what could be done.

The Dubliner then rang around staff to ask if they would cater for the biggest rock stars in the world.

"No one said no, in fact we were inundated with requests from staff to help out, unsurprisingly," added Mr. Nolan.

But with Bono and the Edge arriving at Dromoland in a matter of hours, the kitchen at the castle was shut with the head chef away.

So the hotel boss sought the help of his wife Maria to lay on the catering.

Faced with a famished U2, luckily Mrs Nolan had been doing some cooking for Christmas -- including a family-sized shepherd's pie, which she served when the musicians arrived at the castle.

The impromptu dinner party included 10 of U2's road crew and bass guitarist Chris Wolstenholme from English rock band Muse, who had been the support act on the Australian leg of U2's tour.

During the meal they were entertained by a trad band, with Bono lending his vocals to their set of Irish airs.

Sources say the party went on well into the night, with the members of the rock band joined by the skeleton staff at the castle.

Suites

Later the group retired to their luxury suites, which feature cottage-style decor based on 18th Century botanical drawings and upholstery designed by the French fabric house Pierre Frey.

The next morning, after making them breakfast, staff waved the band off as they went to catch a train to Dublin's Heuston Station. Dromoland Castle confirmed that U2 were paying guests during their stay.

"U2 were the nicest people you ever could meet and very engaging. They were especially appreciative of the efforts the staff at Dromoland had made. We would happily welcome U2 back anytime," said Pamela Foley, rooms division manager at Dromoland Castle.

Set among 410 acres of park and woodland, Dromoland Castle is regarded as one of Europe's top luxury retreats.

Former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush have both stayed there, as has Hollywood actor John Travolta.

U2 begin the next leg of their world tour in Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 13.

At the risk of over-analysis, this seems like good news: Cee Lo Green says his Gnarls Barkley partner, Brian Burton -- AKA Danger Mouse -- is "wrapping up" a project with U2. He says it in a Wall Street Journal article about celebrity new year resolutions:

I also just brainstormed with Brian Burton [aka producer Danger Mouse, his partner in the band Gnarls Barkley] and he's wrapping up the U2 project.

If you're looking for any bit of info about U2's album plans and the chances of a new album sometime soon, that seems to be good news. Back in October, Bono first let it slip that U2 had "about 12 songs" they were working on with Mouse ... err, Burton. There are separate album projects said to be in the works, including one with will.i.am producing. You can keep track of it all on our new U2 album page. (thx to @U2 forum member CherryYouDanceWithMe for the tip)

" January 4, 2011 -- NME (UK)

Paul McCartney asks Indian Prime Minister to declare national Vegetarian Day

Paul McCartney has written to ask Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare a national Vegetarian Day in the country.

Ther ex-Beatle urged Prime Minister Singh to introduce the meat-free day in order to celebrate compassion towards animals, reports the Press Association.

In the letter he wrote that a Vegetarian Day "would be a celebration of life".

McCartney has been a vegetarian activist since the mid-1970s, when he and his then-wife Linda both gave up meat.

In 2003 it was estimated by the UN food agency that 42 per cent of India's 1.2 billion population were vegetarian. "

JD: The bombast, and the pretension, and the absolute silliness of both the performances and the scenes with the band—like Larry Mullen crying at Elvis’ grave—I mean, come on! [Laughs.] It’s just so goddamn silly and bloated and pretentious and over-the-top. These were a couple of putzes from Dublin who heard the Sex Pistols and thought, “We can do that.” But Rattle & Hum plays 100 percent into the flag-waving, cannon-shooting, Martin Luther King-hailing, very worst aspects of U2. You know, this show is going to change the world; at the end of the day, this show had 100,000 people who paid $60 each, and I don’t see how that’s feeding Africa.

AVC: What if U2 really were asshole, full-of-themselves rock stars at the time? Should that be held against Ratlle & Hum? Isn’t the movie just an honest depiction of the band?

JD: Oh yeah, that’s true. I’m not saying it’s dishonest. It absolutely shows what they are. They are big, superstar rock stars full of pretension. But for the same reason I have no desire to sit through Saw VII—because torture porn makes my stomach hurt—so does Rattle & Hum. [Laughs.] U2 are assholes, the movie shows them as assholes, but that doesn’t make it any fun to watch.

" January 6, 2011 -- Digital Spy

Steve Martin 'proud to work with McCartney'

Steve Martin has suggested that it was an honour to have Paul McCartney perform on his latest bluegrass album "Rare Bird Alert."

The comedian told The AP that he remains surprised to have collaborated with one of his childhood idols on the track 'Best Love'.

"It's very hard to believe," Martin said."I was a kid when I first heard Paul McCartney, and if you told me one day that he'd be singing one of my tunes... I'm still flabbergasted."

Martin hit the top spot of the US bluegrass charts with his debut album The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo in 2009.

"Rare Bird Alert," which also features Dixie Chicks and The Steep Canyon Rangers, is released on March 15. "

There's a magazine ad currently running in Argetina which says U2 will play three concerts in La Plata -- but only two have been announced so far. The ad in Rolling Stone Argentina adds a show on April 3, 2011. Whether it ever gets announced is anyone's guess, but you can see the ad for yourself on U2tours.com.

According to USA Today, Bono will appear on Oprah next Friday, January 21st. This is the appearance that was taped last month at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. You can see some photos from that appearance on Zimbio, and you'll want to check your local listings for the exact airtime of next week's show.
