1964: A hard day's night for The Beatles and their fans

 John Kelly, The Times-Picayune

Wednesday marked the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's murder, so a photo from The Beatles' trip to New Orleans seemed appropriate.

Early on the morning of Sept. 16, 1964, a series of mishaps left these girls, gathered at Lakefront Airport to greet the 'hairy Britons,' as our reporter referred to them, disappointed and caused the band to refer to New Orleans as the 'roughest' stop on their tour.

A helicopter scheduled to fly them to their motel blew a tire and replacement limousines were incorrectly dispatched to New Orleans International Airport. Their flight was diverted there, which left City Councilman Daniel Kelly scrambling across town, first to the airport and then to their motel on Chef Menteur Highway, in a vain attempt to present them with Mayor Victor Schiro's 'Beatles Day' proclamation. The band's vehicle took a different path from the others, so fans lining the planned route to the motel never got a glimpse of them. At the Congress Inn their limo backed into a Kenner police car as it sought to maneuver through the crowd. The foursome dashed into the lobby, through a utility room and finally into room 100.

The next day Mayor Schiro presented the group with the key to the city and John Lennon responded: 'I want to put my arm around you. You look like a nice fellow, Lord Mayor.' They performed at City Park Stadium at 9:30 p.m. that night before being whisked away to Kansas City.

John Kelly can be reached at [email protected].

MarksFriggincom Blogs about Howard Stern not getting Paul's autograph at the Apollo

Recap of Howard Stern's radio show this morning.

"Howard started the show talking about how he's actually awake this morning after staying out late at the Paul McCartney concert. Howard said his daughter Ashley, was there at the concert last night and enjoyed it. He said there was nothing better than seeing her singing along to ''Hey Jude.'' Howard said the concert was fabulous.

Howard said they packed the place with subscribers and with celebrities. Howard said he's not sure why they did that but he saw a lot of celebrities.

Howard said Jared had come up to him and asked about doing a meet and greet with Paul and he was going to try to get him and his daughter in. Howard said he had his wife and daughter's friend there too so he didn't want to go back there with just his daughter. Howard said he didn't want to put Paul under any pressure either. He said Jared told him he wanted to bring all four of them back stage but then he didn't know if he wanted to go back there or just go sit down. Howard said okay and went back so his daughter could meet Paul. Howard said he wanted to come through as a dad.

Howard said Ross or Jared came to him and told him to come back and do the meet and greet. Howard said he walked through the crowd and people were asking where he was going. He had to keep it a secret. Robin said it was almost like a pope kind of thing. Howard said he wouldn't have gone back there if he wasn't there with his daughter. He knows what a pain in the ass it is for Paul. Howard said the guy is 68 years old.

Howard said that he went back stage with Ashley, Beth and Ashley's friend. Howard said they got in a room and there were some people from the board of directors of Sirius there. He said that Chris Rock was there too. Howard said he was marched in there too.

Howard said he was thinking about how Ashley wanted an autograph so he felt terrible asking. He said he's never done that in his life. He said this was important to her though. Howard said Paul came in and he (Howard) asked him if he would sign a ticket as quickly as he could. Paul said that he'd do that but then blew him off saying he had to take pictures. Howard said he ended up not doing it and Chris looked at him like he had really committed a big faux pas. He said that Beth looked at him the same way and it just wasn't a good thing. Howard said they brought them all over to take pictures with Paul and did that but no autograph. Howard said he felt bad the whole concert. Howard said he shouldn't have bothered the guy.

Howard said his daughter asked him if he would have felt bad if someone asked him for an autograph back stage. Howard said he wouldn't. Howard said Paul may be on that no autograph thing that Ringo is on. Howard said he was handled and he just felt bad about the whole thing."

Paul McCartney Announces His Most Intimate Show This Century

Friday, December 17th Packed Lunch at the 100 Club, LONDON ( Necessary to win NET ! )

Tickets go on sale Wednesday December 15th at 10AM (GMT) 5AM ET

Tickets limited to two tickets per person.

National 24hr ticket hotline 08442 48 50 77 or online at www.ticketmaster.co.uk

Hot off the heels of rocking the world famous Harlem Apollo Theatre in New York last night, today sees Paul McCartney announce details for his most intimate show of this century and for what is set to be rock n' roll's most sought after ticket ever. After a year of performing in stadiums to millions of people across the world on his record breaking 'Up and Coming' Tour, Paul and his band will take it back to basics with a special stripped down show at London's famous 100 Club. Paul and his band will play a lunchtime show at the historic venue this Friday, 17th December, in what will be his smallest show since his headline grabbing gig at the Cavern Club in Liverpool back in 1999.

This show, which is a prelude to Paul's two UK shows on the 18th and 20th of December, is a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans to watch music's most loved icon up close and extremely personal. Paul has played the world's largest venues, he's performed groundbreaking outdoor shows in city centre's and parks across the globe and he's even performed live into Space. This unique concert will mean that those lucky enough to get tickets once they go on sale will witness a rare and special moment as the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music (as listed by Guinness World Records) performs to one of the smallest audiences he's ever performed to.

Paul said: 'I've played all sorts of different venues over the years and this kind of show presents a different kind of challenge to performing in a stadium. I love performing and I love connecting with audiences, be it in a stadium or arena or in a club. I'm looking forward to being able to interact with fans on a face to face basis, not to mention the smell of sweat and beer!"

In addition to this announcement there is more good news for music fans

EXTRA TICKETS TO BE RELEASED FOR HMV APOLLO LONDON AND LIVERPOOL'S O2 ACADEMY

Extra tickets are being put on sale for Paul's two record breaking sold out UK shows at the HMV Apollo and Liverpool's O2 Academy on the 18th and 20th of December respectively.

The shows both sold out instantly when the tickets went on sale last week leaving some fans disappointed that they had missed out on the chance to see Paul. Upon learning this Paul personally intervened and asked that a portion of his own ticket allocation went to fans instead.

Extra tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the National 24hr ticket hotline 08442 48 50 77 or online at www.ticketmaster.co.uks

These shows mark the end of an extraordinary year for Paul who made not only one but two visits to The White House, first when he received the Gerswin Prize for Popular Song from President Obama and just last week when he was presented with a Kennedy Honour for his contribution to American culture.

************ MACCA SELLS OUT IN LITERALLY SECONDS !!!!!!!! ******************

" December 15, 2010 -- PM.com

Tickets Sell Out in Seconds

100 Club Show Friday December 17th tickets instantly sell out.

Paul's most intimate gig this century sold out in mere seconds at 10 am today. A surprise announcement was released yesterday that Paul and his band will play a lunchtime show at the historic 100 Club this Friday, December 17th.

Paul said: "We are really looking forward to the show. I've never played at The 100 Club before and it's great to be playing at a venue with so much great history that has seen so many brilliant gigs over the years.

One of the reasons for playing The 100 Club, besides playing a small club gig, is so that we can be part of the campaign to help the venue stay open for a new generation of up and coming artists, like myself!"

Those lucky enough to have got their hands on one of the must have rock 'n' roll tickets this year will experience a once in a lifetime experience to witness one of the world's most loved icons in his smallest solo performance ever.

This show acts as a prelude to Paul's two UK shows on the 18th and 20th December at the HMV Apollo and Liverpool's O2 Academy respectively. Similarly these shows instantly sold out leaving some fans disappointed. This led to Paul personally intervening and tickets from his own allocation were released and once again were snapped up in a fan frenzy.

Paul is celebrating the end of an incredible year (which included not one but two trips to the White House) by returning not only to his hometown but getting up close and personal with fans at an astoundingly intimate venue.

Concert Itinerary:
Friday, December 17th Packed Lunch at the 100 Club, London
Saturday, December 18th Live at the Apollo - HMV Apollo, Hammersmith, London
Monday, December 20th Live at the Academy - O2 Academy, Liverpool  "

McCartney Plays the Apollo, His 'Holy Grail'

Paul McCartney played the Apollo on Monday, and was demonstrably proud to do so. "It's the holy grail," he muttered, early in the set. "I dreamed of playing here for many a year." Then he touched the Lucky Log, the hunk of elm that's long been placed on stage as a charm for the theater's Amateur Night performers.

Luck had little to do with it. The show, a special event and live broadcast for subscribers to Sirius XM radio in recognition of its 20 millionth subscription, ran two hours and a bit -- not quite the epic length of his stadium-and-festival shows over the last decade, but longer than a few "secret" club gigs he played in 2007. And nearly all of it amounted to a serious mission of pleasing: a trail of aesthetic breakthroughs, rave-ups and singalongs from the beginning of The Beatles through the end of Wings, with one recent solo-album cut ("Dance Tonight"), one very early Lennon-McCartney composition known to most as a late Beatles tune ("One After 909"), and one Christmas song ("Wonderful Christmastime," with singers from the Choir Academy of Harlem.)

There exist some listeners curious and genuinely interested in Mr. McCartney's loose moments and toss-offs, who feel that "Hey Jude" has penetrated deeply enough into the world's culture, who admire the intuitive out-take-iness of records like "Ram" and "McCartney II," and who wouldn't mind a little more texture in his shows. They may yet have their day, but this concert was not for them.

His band is the same it's been for most of the last decade, with the guitarists Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray, the keyboardist Paul Wickens, and the drummer Abe Laboriel Jr.; in a way their canned grimaces and corny gestures seem perfect, because they illustrate how much of the audience might dream of playing if given the chance to get on stage with Mr. McCartney, showing off but hitting all the marks. It's a machine that doesn't change arrangements from year to year, mostly replicating the original versions, down to the string parts on "Eleanor Rigby" as recreated by Mr. Wickens' synthesizer. It's also a loud, clear, efficacious, and sometimes bashing band, aiming to the back rows.

The Concord label recently reissued Mr. McCartney's 1973 album "Band on the Run," and the set got relatively deep into it: "Jet," "Let Me Roll It," "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five," and the title track. And this was where the concert hit its stride: songs with huge melodies and many parts. The Beatles part of the concert felt rather more typical and predictable, stretching from "I Saw Her Standing There," to "Eight Days a Week (WEBMASTER'S NOTE: What show was he at?),"to the "White Album" catalog of "Back in the U.S.S.R.," "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," and "Blackbird." And with "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude," anthem fatigue set in.

In the middle of the set, out of respect to the stage, Mr. McCartney introduced a song by an old Apollo star, Marvin Gaye. It was "Hitch Hike," which the Beatles played during the "Let It Be" sessions but never recorded, and it was going pretty well, with six women dancing on a platform behind the stage, Ready Steady Go! style. Then the house speakers turned off, only the stage monitors were audible, and a screech of feedback made Mr. McCartney recoil. After some delay the sound-system righted, and the band, with the dancers, took it again from the top. On one hand: that would have been hard to hear in the car. On the other hand: texture!  "
