U2 360 Degrees, the most expensive rock spectacle ever, is here.

The tour, with a daily running cost of $850,000, arrived on six 747 jets to be assembled by a crew of 130.

"You compare a tour by the number of trucks they use," production manager Jake Berry said. "The Rolling Stones ran 46 trucks. We are running 55. This is the biggest."

The centrepiece of U2-360 is a so-called claw, an imposing bug-like structure that houses 200 tonnes of light, sound and video magic.

U2-360 stage designer Willie Williams said: "The breakthrough was to make it so big that it becomes part of the stadium. But, in a funny way, it's invisible because the performance area is not connected to the structure."

Indeed, the stadium of fans surrounding the claw and stage become part of the show, too.

"It's a cross between a rock show and a sporting event because you can see the other people," Williams says.

U2 redefined stadium rock with their Zoo TV and PopMart tours. But U2 bassist Adam Clayton says U2-360 is revolutionary. "We know it's a game changer," he said. "These football stadiums can be quite imposing for music. But this has a different atmosphere. There is humour to it, almost something ridiculous about it. You think 'How is this going to work?"'

In terms of box office receipts, U2-360 is working incredibly well.

It took $123 million to be the highest grossing tour of 2009.

A back injury flattened the band's lead singer, Bono, and tour profits, for most of this year.

U2-360 resumed in August with sellout dates across Europe. U.S. dates are scheduled next year.

U2's manager, Paul McGuinness, confirmed the $850,000 daily running cost of U2-360. "That's the overhead cost of being out here whether we play or not," McGuinness said. "It's important we play regularly. There is a discipline involved.

"Even though we're spending a lot of money, we're making a lot of money."

McGuinness knows U2-360 is a new model for stadium rock. "We've always done landmark productions, or so we think," he said. "Being able to play in the round, in stadiums, is the holy grail."

Put simply, in the round means up to 30,000 more seats, which equals lower ticket prices.

"I can assure you the costs of putting this show on are the highest in history," McGuinness said.

"But the audience looks at the show and can see what we spent the money on.

"They see an incredible spectacle."

Clayton agreed: "There is a financial risk when you do something that hasn't been done before. It's a bit like inventing the wheel.

"We've now proved you can do a show by hanging light and sound off a structure. But to build that structure is a very high price. You have to make sure your tour is doing all right." Clearly, U2 are astute businessmen.

But McGuinness said the numbers must never get in the way of creativity.

"The reason for being good in business is so you can do what you like creatively," McGuinness said.

"By and large, we have succeeded. There aren't too many instances of the business getting the better of the creative process."

Berry said U2-360 took the creativity of stadium rock to an end game -- purely because of cost. "It's like the Beijing Olympics," he said.

THE rumble of activity at Suncorp Stadium began three days ago and logistics teams are building up for three monster concerts this fortnight.

U2's 360 Degrees tour arrives in Brisbane next Wednesday and Thursday and the following week 40,000 fans will flood in for Bon Jovi's The Circle tour.

U2's tour reportedly costs $850,000 a day to keep on the road and the build and shows will eventually take in between 1500 and1700 staff in Brisbane to make it happen.

The U2 set is made up of a giant claw-like structure, estimated to cost about $30 million, upon which live footage of the shows is projected to cater for those sitting further back.

At the completion of the U2 shows, crews will tear down the massive set and start all over again for the Bon Jovi concert on December 14. Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham said an undertaking of this size required an enormous amount of planning.

"All up it would be close to six months," he said.

"It is everything from getting your ticket builds, which takes a fair bit of planning, to catering and toilet facilities that aren't normally available.

"Because we are having people on the field, you are using areas of the stadium that people don't (normally) use."

Mr Graham said concert organisers must be careful they do not damage the playing surface, particularly with an A-League Brisbane Roar v Gold Coast United match taking place just 12 days later.

"We will be covering the whole field with special purpose field protection," Mr Graham said. "It is a material that will allow the heavy machinery that is needed to build these enormous stages to be on the field without damaging it."

Cranes are used to hoist 52 tonnes of custom-designed video screen for U2. Bon Jovi will travel around the country with a four-tonne video screen.

Powering the sets is another consideration. With Bon Jovi's lights generating a whopping 6000 amps of power in their show, it requires a fair bit of customising.

"We also need to look at putting a full traffic management plan in place for the concerts and an operational management plan," Mr Graham said.

"We discuss that with various stakeholders like representatives in council, transport people and emergency services."

The final result for fans, the band and the stadium will be a week of very memorable music events for Brisbane.

"  joey  ..... i had no idea that macca wrote the middle eight melody to ' norwegian wood  '  "

That is right Some Guy  --- Since Macca had a significant role in crafting the melody ( middle eight )  and assisting with the lyrics to this masterpiece I am surprised he has not performed it in concert  -- yet !

" the "true" meaning of the phrase Norwegian Wood! This song came out when I was 12 years old and my English teacher recited it in class as poetry! When he did.. it became obvious to me that Norwegian Wood was a little secret code by Lennon that really meant "knowing she would"! Listen to the song again and see how well that phrase fits. And Lennon has admitted he was trying to hide the true meaning of the lyrics to hide his infidelity. I think it is obvious what he meant!  "

http://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/norwegian-wood-this-bird-has-flown/

" Although begun in Switzerland, Norwegian Wood was completed as a collaboration between Lennon and Paul McCartney. Talking to Rolling Stone in 1970, Lennon attributed the middle section to McCartney, although in a 1980 interview with Playboy he called it "my song completely".

I came in and he had this first stanza, which was brilliant: 'I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me.' That was all he had, no title, no nothing. I said, 'Oh yes, well, ha, we're there.' And it wrote itself. Once you've got the great idea, they do tend to write themselves, providing you know how to write songs. So I picked it up at the second verse, it's a story. It's him trying to pull a bird, it was about an affair. John told Playboy that he hadn't the faintest idea where the title came from but I do. Peter Asher had his room done out in wood, a lot of people were decorating their places in wood. Norwegian wood. It was pine really, cheap pine. But it's not as good a title, Cheap Pine, baby...

So she makes him sleep in the bath and then finally in the last verse I had this idea to set the Norwegian wood on fire as revenge, so we did it very tongue in cheek. She led him on, then said, 'You'd better sleep in the bath'. In our world the guy had to have some sort of revenge. It could have meant I lit a fire to keep myself warm, and wasn't the dΓ©cor of her house wonderful? But it didn't, it meant I burned the fucking place down as an act of revenge, and then we left it there and went into the instrumental.

" December 4, 2010 -- Huffington Post
by Martin Lewis

Many Years From Then: Sir Paul McCartney Receives the Kennedy Center Honor

On Sunday December 5th, Sir Paul McCartney receives America's most prestigious tribute bestowed upon creative artists -- the Kennedy Center Honor. Beatles historian Martin Lewis, who has known Sir Paul and worked with him on several projects over the past quarter-century, has written this new appreciation of McCartney to mark the occasion. The Kennedy Center Honors event will be aired on the CBS network on Tuesday December 28th.

My mentor and first employer, former Beatles publicist, the late Derek Taylor, once described The Beatles as "the 20th Century's Greatest Romance." His poetic encapsulation of the majestic achievements of the lads from Liverpool was astute, and in that interpretation, Paul McCartney is the charismatic Aramis of the four musketeer-musicians who captured the world's heart.

Sir Paul McCartney has traveled a long and winding road from his childhood in Liverpool to the summit of receiving his Kennedy Center Honor in Washington D.C. By the age of just 27, with his three bandmates in The Beatles, he had already completely revolutionized popular music and created a canon of work that is heralded and unsurpassed in both critical acclaim and public popularity to this day. In the 40 years since the break-up of The Beatles, he has developed into a Renaissance Man for our times. A legacy of compositions and recordings in popular music, acclaimed classical works, poetry, paintings, award-winning animated films and a pioneering presence as an activist in many spheres -- including the instigation of the Concert For New York after the 9/11 attacks.

Born James Paul McCartney on June 18th, 1942 in war-bombed Liverpool to Mary a nurse and Jim a cotton salesman and jazz band aficionado, he grew up in municipal housing, in blue-collar districts on the outskirts of Liverpool. At the age of 14, he lost his mother to breast cancer, and he and his younger brother Michael were thereafter raised by his father with the support of extended family. Shortly after his mother's passing he taught himself to play the guitar and wrote his first song, I Lost My Little Girl.

One Saturday afternoon in July 1957, his friend Ivan Vaughan took him to the local church fete. Another of Ivan's pals was playing in a skiffle group that day in front of 400 villagers. (Skiffle was the British equivalent of homemade jug-band music.) McCartney watched the Quarrymen and in particular their scruffy leader, John. After the performance, Ivan introduced his two mates. It was the Big Bang that led directly to The Beatles. If that sounds like an exaggeration, consider this: Almost ten years later to the day Paul and his new pal John -- together with two other chums called George and Ringo, were performing live to 400 MILLION members of the global village on the world's first-ever satellite TV hook-up. "All You Need Is Love" was what they sang that day. Love in all its forms was, and remains, the touchstone of Paul McCartney's work and family life.

Though John was older by nearly two years, Paul's comparative mastery of the guitar and knowledge of songs of the emerging rock 'n' roll from America placed him ahead of his new pal in musical craft and in the very early years Paul helped John's nascent musicianship emerge. So began a creative partnership and friendship that literally changed the world. Spurred on by a natural sibling-style rivalry, each drove the other to higher and higher creative achievements. Paul's innate gift for melody informed John's compositions. Lennon's affinity for words inspired McCartney to write ever more evocative lyrics ("wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door"). The teenage Paul had already started composing, and as he encouraged John to do the same, they became a writing team. They wrote together "eyeball-to-eyeball" in their earliest years. From 1964 onwards they primarily composed songs on their own -- yet they almost always turned to each other to polish and improve their songs.

In the span of a few years McCartney composed literally dozens of songs that became instant classics and have embedded themselves into the world's collective DNA. Songs such as "Can't Buy Me Love," "Yesterday," "Eleanor Rigby," "Here, There and Everywhere," "Penny Lane," "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be." As his three Beatle colleagues all married and settled in the Surrey countryside, it was McCartney who stayed in the heart of England's capital in the mid-60s and immersed himself in London's burgeoning counter-culture. He imbued theater, foreign films, art, Stockhausen, John Cage, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg. This eclecticism manifested itself in The Beatles' landmark Sgt Pepper album in 1967 -- a song cycle very much driven by Paul's vision. In these years, McCartney also became the first Beatle to score a movie -- the Hayley Mills film The Family Way, and he was the driving force behind their ahead-of-its-time Magical Mystery Tour film -- which impressed (among many) a young film student called Steven Spielberg...

After The Beatles broke up at their peak in 1970, McCartney elected to restart his musical career from a virtual ground zero by creating a new band that included his wife Linda. Wings grew slowly, but by the end of the 1970s had become one of the major musical attractions of the decade, with a slew of memorable hits and world tours under its span. McCartney had proven that he could start and lead a new band on the run to the top. His humanitarian side started to manifest itself with the landmark Concerts for Kampuchea in 1979, which he helped organize and at which he performed with many stellar peers.

The world changed after the tragic loss of John Lennon in December 1980, and Paul made changes in his life. He disbanded Wings and focused more on recordings and family than live performance -- though he gave one of the highlight performances at 1985's Live Aid. His 80s recordings included hugely popular collaborations with younger performers who McCartney was always happy to work with including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello.

It was in the 1980s and 1990s that McCartney broadened the creative canvas he worked on. He made a series of award-winning animated short films, re-kindled his love of painting and poetry. He also started composing acclaimed classical works. His philanthropy and passion for giving back led him to work with a team in transforming the derelict building that had housed his high school and turn it into LIPA (Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts) -- which has become Britain's finest such academy.

Post break-up, The Beatles had defied the laws of celebrity physics and they had never gone out of fashion. They were discovered afresh by each new generation. When McCartney returned to live performance in 1989, he discovered that in addition to his loyal fans from the 1960s and 1970s, he had a new fan-base that had grown up on his solo recordings in the 1980s and had also discovered him through the omnipresent recordings of his first group -- the one he was in before Wings... Since returning to the concert stage, he has made live performance a staple of his life -- touring the world frequently and bringing together multiple generations at every show.  "

It was Paul McCartney's big night as he was honoured alongside American icon Oprah Winfrey at the 33rd Kennedy Centre Honours, but it was his girlfriend Nancy Shevell who was turning heads.

The socialite millionaire was trying to act naturally as she posed alongside Paul and his 33-year-old son James in a figure-hugging lace dress on Saturday.

The Kennedy Centre Honours is far from a casual affair; the formal dinner for the prestigious annual celebration of the arts, honouring five individuals who have spent their lives 'enriching, inspiring and elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation,' was last year hosted by President Obama.

This year, secretary of state and former First Lady Hillary Clinton welcomed the honourees, who also included country musician Meryl Haggard, Hello Dolly! composer Jerry Herman and choreographer Bill T Jones.

The Kennedy Centre Honours are a distinctly American affair, and McCartney talked about how he had become a regular on the Washington awards circuit.

Earlier this year he received the George Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress, which included a concert at the Library and a tribute session at the White House.

'I'm getting my own personal parking lot,' he joked.

The former Beatle isn't the first Brit to receive the honour, however. Elton John, Julie Andrews, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor and Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have all been recognised for their contributions to American culture.

According to the Kennedy Centre, McCartney will receive the award for being 'one of the most successful songwriters and musicians of all time, whose work has continuously altered both the creation and perception of music all over the world.'

Saturday night's formal dinner will be followed on Sunday with a concert, the details of which are traditionally shrouded in secrecy.

However, Aerosmith frontman Steve Tyler let slip during a radio interview that McCartney had contacted him to perform.

'He asked me to sing the last four songs of Abbey Road so I said 'Umm OK.' (I'm) doing it,' he told American radio station 95.9 WATD-FM.

The Kennedy Honors will be broadcast on Tuesday, December 28th (9 - 11pm ET) on CBS. "

It's the biggest rig Lang Park has seen since Sam Backo.

But this monstrous structure will be well gone by the time the Broncos go around next year.

The centrepiece of U2 360° – the Irish supergroup's current tour – started being assembled at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium yesterday but anyone could be forgiven for thinking a HG Wells novel had come to life.

Advertisement: Story continues below The massive stage and "claw" supporting rig weighs about 590 tonnes and takes up almost half the stadium's playing field.

The four-legged structure boasts 92 speakers as well a 22 metre, 5000 pixel full HD screen, which rises up and down from the height of 30 metres.

The structure takes five days to assemble - one day to lay down the stadium flooring, three days to build the stage and one day to attach the lighting and sound equipment.

Tour director Craig Evans said the size of the production dwarfed any project in which he had been involved.

"The original theory Bono had [of] a show 'in the round' the idea was to make it so big that it makes the stadium feel small and creates an intimate feeling in a stadium atmosphere," he said.

"This show certainly succeeds in doing that. This stage does make the stadium feel small - it will create a feeling of intimacy with the band to the audience."

With Brisbane suffering through a recent bout of wet weather, stage manager George Reeves said Bono would be pushing ahead with the Suncorp Stadium gigs in spite of any downpour.

"He loves singing in the rain, in fact he loves singing in the rain so much that he sings Singin' in the Rain every time it rains so even if it's raining everyone should be prepared to enjoy the show as well," he said.

That is good news for the small group of U2 fans who began lining up outside Suncorp Stadium as early as Monday morning.

Sydney woman Katie Powell has been to every Australian U2 show since 1993.

She said the band's recent Melbourne show was very involving and stacked up well against previous tours.

"You are just surrounded all around by it and you see them move around the stage," she said.

"They don't stick to one part, everyone in the stadium has a fair view of the show."

The tour was launched in support of the band's No Line on the Horizon album in Toronto on June 30 2009 and has already played to more than four million people worldwide.

Tickets are still available for the Wednesday and Thursday shows.

" Sexy Sadie what have you done
You made a fool of everyone
You made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie ooh what have you done

Sexy Sadie you broke the rules
You layed it down for all to see
You layed it down for all to see
Sexy Sadie oooh you broke the rules

One sunny day the world was waiting for a lover
She came along to turn on everyone
Sexy Sadie the greatest of them all

Sexy Sadie how did you know
The world was waiting just for you
The world was waiting just for you
Sexy Sadie oooh how did you know

Sexy Sadie you'll get yours yet
However big you think you are
However big you think you are
Sexy Sadie oooh you'll get yours yet

We gave her everything we owned just to sit at her table
Just a smile would lighten everything
Sexy Sadie she's the latest and the greatest of them all

She made a fool of everyone
