from Blabbermouth.net

The Pulse of Radio reports that executives at concert giant Live Nation are looking at 2011 tours from the likes of VAN HALEN to save the live music industry, according to a report in USA Today. Live Nation executive chairman Irving Azoff told analysts on a Monday (October 4) conference call that the concert business will end 2010 with a whimper, with Azoff saying the industry is "still not seeing a consumer recovery" in ticket sales. But Azoff said he was optimistic about next year, specifically mentioning VAN HALEN and FLEETWOOD MAC as two acts that could lift ticket sales out of the doldrums.

Other potential 2011 moneymakers that Azoff mentioned included the cast of "Glee", AVRIL LAVIGNE and CHRISTINA AGUILERA. The latter canceled a tour this past summer because of poor sales.

Other acts that saw a dip in ticket sales this year included the JONAS BROTHERS, AEROSMITH, GOO GOO DOLLS, THE EAGLES and others.

Azoff also said that Live Nation hopes to earn money by selling more items like CDs, DVDs of that night's concert, T-shirts, posters and other memorabilia.

VAN HALEN's 2008 reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth grossed more than $93 million and drew nearly one million fans to 74 shows.

Recent rumors have indicated that a new VAN HALEN album is in the works for a 2011 release. The new album would be the first with Roth on the mic since 1983 and first full studio effort since 1998's "Van Halen III".

U2 producer Steve Lillywhite has accused The Irish Times of misquoting him, in the headline on an article which appeared in the run-up to his appearance at The Music Show.

The news story was headlined "Producer admits last U2 album was a failure" – but the man who produced Boy, October and War, and later co-produced both How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and No Line On The Horizon for the band, with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, insists that this is not what he said.

“I never called U2 a failure,” he told the audience at the panel ‘Are Producers The Real Stars?’, where he appeared alongside Van Morrison and Waterboys producer Mick Glossop and Julie Feeney.

“It was said that I said No Line On The Horizon was a failure. That is a complete misquote, I never said the word ‘failure’ to that journalist.”

In fact the words do not appear in quotes in the article and so the headline – presumably tagged on during production – is totally unrepresentative of what was written by Irish Times reporter, Ronan McGreevy.

“I just wanted to clarify what I said (here),” Lillywhite continued. “I was saying that with albums like The Joshua Tree, which is set in the desert, the album and the sound invokes this mood as a whole, you just feel it. I just said that I didn’t think No Line On The Horizon did that as well. It was meant to invoke the whole feel of north Africa, of Morocco, and I didn’t think that was achieved as well as on other albums, where the atmosphere hits you. I would never call any of U2’s work a failure, and I did not.”

A sub-headline on the news story says that the album sold only “a fraction” of previous albums, by which one would normally understand that sales were well down on previous efforts. In fact the record has gone to No. 1 in at least 14 countries. outperforming even Achtung Baby. Its sales of over 5 million copies, against the 9 million sold by its predecessor How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb have to be seen in the wider context of shrinking record sales – and so represent a relatively good result for the band in a diminishing market.

Lillywhite is currently seeking a retraction from the newspaper.

“You’d expect better of The Irish Times,” he said afterwards. “They’re supposed to be a newspaper of record.”

Hot Tours: Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney earns the No. 1 ranking on this week's Hot Tours chart as sellout crowds at shows in Charlotte and Philadelphia produced $7.1 million in box office grosses. Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte hosted the rock legend's Up and Coming Tour on July 28 with $2.2 million in ticket sales and 15,477 fans in the house which is the top-grossing event reported this year for the venue, and the second highest on record, based on box office stats reported to Billboard. Only The Rolling Stones, with the first concert ever held at the arena, grossed more from a single concert at the arena ($2.4 million) on Oct. 21, 2005.

Also included among this week's McCartney totals are two sold out performances at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The $4.8 million in tickets is the highest gross reported this week for the tour. Attendance at the arena was 31,825 for both nights (Aug. 14-15). "

Love me do: Yoko reveals it was Paul who saved her marriage to John

It became a legendary event in John Lennon's increasingly eccentric life - famously known as 'the lost weekend'.

And now, on the day John Lennon fans around the world are celebrating what would have been his 70th birthday, his widow, Yoko Ono, has revealed what happened during those days when John disappeared with their pretty personal assistant.

And despite a well known war of words with Beatle Paul McCartney, Yoko credits Macca with actually saving their marriage.

John and Yoko had separated in the summer of 1973 after a period of marital strife, and subsequently Lennon began a relationship with his personal assistant May Pang - a collusion Pang says was entirely orchestrated by Yoko.

Yoko continued to stay in touch with her errant husband but it was not until they met backstage at an Elton John concert in November1974 that they became reconciled.

But the surprise element of the story is that Yoko reveals Paul McCartney stepped in and brought the couple back together.

That the two were not on good terms and a feud developed after Lennon left the Beatles is well known.

Yoko tells The Times: 'I want the world to know that it was a very touching thing that he did for John.

'He was genuinely concerned about his old partner. Even though John was not even asking for help - John, Paul, all of them were too proud to ask anything - he helped. John often said he didn't understand why Paul did this for us, but he did.'

As Yoko recounts, Paul and Linda McCartney visited her in New York early in 1974, and they talked long into the night.

Paul asked Yoko what would make her take John back and she told him that if John courted her she would perhaps consider it.

Paul then visited John in Los Angeles where he was living with May Pang, and according to Yoko advised him on how to get Yoko back.

The fact that John immediately tried to court Yoko, and came back to New York, was hugely important she says.

He made several attempts to woo her, including taking her to a Man Ray exhibition and to see a film, after she watched him perform at the Elton John concert and realised it could all begin again.

Less than a year after they were reunited their son Sean was born, on John's birthday.

To mark what would have been John's 70th birthday Yoko is in Iceland today to light the Imagine Peace Tower in Reykjavik bay's Videy Island.

She lights the Tower every year on the same day, sending a vast beam of light shooting upwards into space, and it remains lit until December 8, the day he was murdered by MDC outside the Dakota building in New York where they lived.

Yoko also reveals that John preferred to celebrate her and their son's birthdays rather than his own, explaining that they would usually have a quiet, private party.

He was not happy about reaching 40, she added, but believed had he reached 70 he would have been 'energetic and very wise and enjoying life'.

There are a number of Lennon anniversary celebrations, notably a massive re-issue of solo Lennon material which Yoko personally remastered.

It is the largest project of its kind since the much-acclaimed reissue of the Fab Four's catalog in 2009.

There will also be a concert in Japan on December 8, the day of his death.

The Dream Power Concert will have Japanese artists singing Lennon songs and all the money will go towards schools in Africa, Asia and South America.

Yoko is at pains to point out that Lennon's children enjoy a normal relationship as brothers, and her and Sean were photographed recently with Lennon's first wife, Cynthia and their son Julian at the premiere of Nowhere Boy, the film about John's early days.

She ends the interview by saying that she feels John is still with her, guiding her and giving her ideas. 'Yoko in her own words' will be broadcast on Radio 6 at 8pm tomorrow.

Today, May Pang lives just outside New York City, and has two children.  "

After postponing its second North American leg due to back surgery for frontman Bono, U2 is back in fine form and wraps the sold out second European leg of the record-breaking 360 tour tonight at Olympic Stadium in Rome.

The band will take a break until they start up in New Zealand in late November and then head to Australia for a series of stadium shows with rapper Jay-Z opening.

U2 will return to North America next year for its make-up dates and sources say they are adding a few more shows to that route. The band is also planning shows in Capetown and Johannesburg, South Africa, in February, their first trip to that continent since the PopMart tour in 1998. In the spring, the band will likely head to South America before returning to North American shores.

The tour seems to have lost no momentum on its march toward becoming the highest-grossing tour in history; two shows in Mexico City sold out quickly at 85,000 tickets each for shows at Azteca Stadium in May of next year.

Macca in daft elf 'n safety jig

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY did a bizarre dance and put on a weird squeaky voice as he mocked a thug cyclist who screamed abuse at a woman pedestrian.

The yob on the bike nearly knocked over Macca, 68, and a string of others as he tore along the road.

The ex-Beatle, heading for his office in Soho, Central London, jumped out and yelled after him: "Ooh I'm so scary, I'm so scary."

Witness Mark Thorburn, 37, said: "The cyclist was telling everyone to f*** off out of his way.

"Paul danced like an elf and put on a squeaky voice to take the mickey. It was the funniest and most surreal thing I've seen."

Paul McCartney in Paris
By Royston Ellis

On Thursday, October 5, 2006 at Le Bristol Hotel in Paris, by sheer chance, I met up with Paul McCartney, and we recalled our earlier meeting in Liverpool in June 1960.

On that occasion I was backed by the then Beetles when I read my poetry to music provided by Paul, John Lennon, George Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe.

It was because I was a beat poet and the boys played beat music that I suggested to them that they spell their name with an "A." Thus they became the Beatles from June 1960 - and went on to Hamburg and then fame and fortune. I left England too and found a different fame and fortune.

In Paris that day 46 years later, I was sitting in the lounge of the bar sipping a champagne cocktail when I noticed a slim man with a jowly face and a fine thatch of hair sweep in, accompanied by three men and one woman. He led the way into the alcove but apparently there weren't enough seats, so he sat himself at the bar counter.

I thought at first he was French and just happened to look like Paul McCartney whose likeness I knew only from old photographs as I do not have television or receive English newspapers at my home in Sri Lanka.

So I wasn't sure if I was seeing the real Paul McCartney. I listened carefully but because of the chatter in the bar couldn't hear if he was speaking English.

I gave a passing steward my business card and asked him to give it to the man at the bar.

Paul took the card and looked at it quickly. He stopped what he was saying and asked the steward where I was.

The steward indicated where I was sitting and I stood up as Paul turned on his bar stool and got to his feet. We embraced fondly, shaking hands.

I told him he looked good, reacting to how smooth his face seemed, if slightly puffy. He actually looked quite athletic and dashing and I was conscious that I looked so much older. And in the course of our conversation, he referred to me being a couple of years older.

He told his companions excitedly that he was a boy when he knew me. "We met when Royston came to Liverpool and stayed at the Gambier Terrace flat. We spent the night together."

I told him I didn't remember that.

He grinned and explained that we spent the night talking our heads off. He said that he and the boys were fascinated because I was a beat poet from London. He said that he remembered a line from one of my poems: "Grease me in easy, grease me in easy" he quoted.

I told him that actual words were "Break me in easy."

He said that his version sounded right and I told him I was surprised he remembered.

He explained to his friends that I was very important to them then. "The things you told us. You remember telling John, George, Stuart and myself that one in four people were gay? We looked at each other and wondered which one it was."

I commented that at that age and that year none of us knew much about anything. I recalled travelling with him and John in a van and Paul asked me about the slang being used in London. And I explained to them then about benzedrene nose inhalers."

"Yes!" said Paul, almost nostalgically. "You turned us on."

He asked me what I was doing and I told him I was still writing and had more than 60 books published, many under different names, but I was no longer a beat poet.

He commented then on how earlier that day he had been walking in the Place de la Concorde and thought how amazing it was that the old buildings remained intact while people had become modern. He sounded philosophical, saying that it was the same with us.

He thought that like the buildings we hadn't changed, even though it was 46 years since we had met, and we were drinking champagne in Paris instead of tea in Liverpool.   "

McCartney Designed Stone's Special Tattoo

Actress Emma Stone has Sir Paul McCartney to thank for making her first and last tattoo a one-of-a-kind experience - The Beatles legend drew the artwork she's having inked to celebrate her mother's recent triumph over breast cancer.

The 21 year old met McCartney while filming Zombieland with actor Woody Harrelson last year and struck up an unlikely friendship with the rock icon after spending a day at his house.

She says, "I got to spend a pretty fair amount of time with Woody... He's just the greatest guy in the world. Probably the best thing I've ever done with Woody... was hanging with Paul McCartney. They're really, really good friends.

"So we go to his (McCartney's) house and he makes us veggie burgers. Can you imagine? It was unbelievable. It (burger) was so good. We just sat around and I was in a funk, I couldn't believe I was there with Paul McCartney."

And Stone decided to take advantage of her new friendship when it came to marking her mum Krista's new clean bill of health.

She says, "My mum and I are going to get tattoos. We've never gotten tattoos before and probably never will again, but her favourite song is Blackbird by Paul McCartney, (it's) my favourite song as well, and she just went through a pretty crazy two years.

"Two years (ago) she got diagnosed with breast cancer and she's out of the woods now, which is amazing, and so... I wrote a letter to Paul McCartney, asking him if he would draw two little bird feet because he wrote the song, and he sent them to me. He drew two little blackbird feet and so I'm getting the tattoo right there (inside of wrist). He's a good guy!"

Paul, Nancy, Ringo, Barbara Bach and Stella attend Mary McCartney's photo exhibit

Last night at the Michael Hoppen Gallery is the private view of images from Mary McCartney's first book, "From Where I Stand," documenting her more than fifteen years of work as a photographer. Mary seems to have always had the natural instinct to observe and document the people around her, shying away from the spotlight that has shone on her family ever since her father, Sir Paul McCartney, became one of the most popular musicians of all time.

Over time, Mary also began to photograph advertising campaigns for her younger sister, Stella McCartney, which brought Mary closer to the fashion industry and inevitably led to some enviable behind-the-scenes moments, where Mary of course always had her camera at the ready, capturing many living fashion icons on film, including Kate Moss, Daphne Guinness and Bjork.

"I wanted to pick shots that stand alone," says McCartney of the images she selected for the book. "I like the photographs of other people that inspired me to be a photographer that make me think: Who was that person? Where was this picture taken? What was the feel behind it? What the emotion behind it? Those are the things that intrigue me and drive me as a photographer."

In advance of the event, I met with Mary over breakfast to get learn more about the images from her book linked to the fashion industry, each of which seems to have it's own special story, which we can share exclusively with BoF readers today.

"We chose this as the cover image because it's quite arresting. It was a personal moment for Stella and I after a night out bowling in America. I like that you can see her little bowling socks. Having been on the other side of paparazzi before, this was just a fun way of commenting on it."

Sir Paul McCartney dedicated a Q Award to his late wife Linda

The singer and songwriter appeared at the ceremony to collect the Classic Album prize for 1973 disc 'Band On The Run' - which he recorded with Wings, a group which included Linda, and is considered his most defining post-Beatles album.

Paul leaves the Q Awards

Paul told how the recording of the record was a "struggle" because of circumstances which arose around it being made in Lagos and his personal difficulty of following The Beatles legacy.

He said: "As they were about to leave to record the album, two band members left the band and then when they arrived in Lagos - where it was recorded - they were mugged and lost the tapes. "

'Doting dad' Paul McCartney's half-term holiday

Despite being one of the world's most famous faces, Sir Paul McCartney recently confirmed his desire for himself and his family to lead as normal a life as possible.

Taking his seven-year-old daughter Beatrice on holiday to Cyprus, the former Beatle was described by fellow hotel guests as a "doting dad".

The 68-year-old star was spotted in the gym every morning as well as in the hotel restaurants for many of his meals.

One source told the Daily Mail: "He was very charming, pointing out directions to one of the restaurants for one guest."

Sir Paul was joined on holiday by his girlfriend, American heiress Nancy Shevell and a nanny. "
