Paul rumored to play 6 shows in the fall

It appears that rumors of Paul doing another US leg in the late fall is true (as reported first on the Macca Report). It is likely that the Midwest (Chicago , Minneapolis & Omaha in October?) will be included in this leg during October/November.

Also former Wings member Denny Laine will be attending the Pittsburgh shows this week.

Paul in Philly - Show 1 - August 14, 2010 - fan reviews and photos

Special thanks to Macca Reporters: DebbieG, Sandy Lopez, Bob Gannon, Chuck and Pam Gallagher, Wayne Young, Tom and James Liverani

Philly Sound Check first night details

Paul was very late due to his plane being delayed and heavy traffic from the airport. He was expected around 4:15pm but didn't arrive until about 5:20pm. Abe was there first. About 15 minutes later Wix arrived. Wix walked across the arena floor to the stage and stopped and posed for pictures with numerous fans. Rusty arrived next followed by Brian.

They went through a few jams-waiting for Paul. During the lulls-Paul's lady in charge of VIP ticketing, Shelley Lazar, kept us up to date as to Paul's unexpected delays, and was very pleasant to talk to sharing interesting anecdotes about Paul. Paul's tour director, Barrie Marshall, came out and spoke with a few fans.

There were approximately 100 people at the soundcheck including the Hewlett-Packard VIPs that seem to be at every show and sound check. Flaming Pie Guitar picks were given to everyone.

Once Paul arrived, he seemed tired at first, but the sound check went on until about 6:40pm. He was in good spirits though and did chat with fans from the stage. Paul stopped several times to confer with the band and they appeared to be making changes to how they were going to do things. They stood around the base of the drums and he wrote out things several times. Very interesting to see him craft his work.

**************  ***************** **************

The Concert Saturday, August 14th

The Philly crowd has traditionally been some of the most wild audiences when Paul is playing and this night was no different.

During the concert the band and Paul had plenty of energy. The band was laughing and having a good time all night.

People in the front rows were allowed to take pictures with point and shoot cameras and cell phones and Paul actually posed while singing and playing several times so people could get a better shot. There appeared to be many cameras in the Wachovia Center. Security seemed OK with this, but no video was allowed. Flash also was not allowed.

Paul told his usual story about being distracted by the signs and then made sure he read every one and told fans "You can put them down now, I've read them all." He clearly got a kick out of a few signs and pointed to the people who made them and nodded his approval. It is amazing how he can do so right in the middle of singing and playing and not miss a note or beat.

Brian and Paul were laughing and joking during a couple of songs.

Abe did his usual funny dance movements including the Macarena while hitting the foot pedal on "Dance Tonight." Abe and Wix were constantly laughing and smiling. You could tell they were all having a really good time.

Paul acknowledged the fans who held up "Ram On" signs just before playing the song on ukulele.

Rusty did his high leg kicks during several songs without missing a note as did Paul.

Paul told his story about how much George loved playing the ukulele and played "Something" and segued nicely from the ukulele to a complete electric version. The crowd loved the pictures of George on the screen as the song played and cheered loudly as the pictures went through the phases of George's life.

Paul told the crowd that "Here Today" was an imaginery conversation he had with John and you could hear a pin drop as he played. His voice did not crack as he sang this beautiful and emotional song but his eyes did tear up a bit as he stepped back after the song was finished. The crowd cheered loudly for this touching song.

After playing "Yesterday," Paul called up a woman from the front row who had held up a sign that said "I am a breast cancer survivor... " She wanted Macca to sign her body for a tattoo. She came up and Paul signed her lower back. Paul joked that he wasn't going to be signing anyone's "butts".

Right after that, he called up a young girl from the front row Dara Roberts. You may remember her story. She is handicapped and her parents were trying to get good seats up front because she is in a wheelchair. The Wachovia Center was only willing to supply them with seats further away from the stage despite them paying for the expensive tickets. Once the story hit the news, Paul's people stepped in and got her a front row seat!!

She was carried on stage by Brian Riddle and placed back in her wheelchair when she came on stage. Paul walked over to her on Rusty's side and gave her a big hug to the joy and jubilation of the crowd. Then Paul walked back to his mic and summoned her over to say "hello to Philadelphia". He held the mic down for her as she gave a robust "Hello Philadelphia" which was met with an earth shattering cheer from the crowd. Paul and band were smiling ear to ear.

Paul bent down and gave Dara a big hug and stroked her cheek.

Just before the encores Paul commented on how many young children he saw in the audience and said how much he liked that. Paul winked and pointed at Kelly and Patrick Gallagher sitting in the front row. He gave them long friendly nods of approval for the signs they made and smiled at them as they sang along. (see below)

This has definitely been a tour with filled dreams come true for numerous fans.

Autographs from the stage

Paul signed around 5 items after the last song.

Congrats to Chuck and Pam Gallagher and their two boys Kelly (13) and Patrick (12) Paul autographed their "High In The Clouds" book. His security man made sure that Paul got the book even as the confetti showered down on everyone including Paul. Macca waited until the security guard handed the book to him and the guard handed the autographed book to the kids.

He also signed a Beatles Rock Band drumhead.

Something I'd been dreading has happened over the past few set lists for the U2 360 tour: "New Year's Day" has crept back in. Great song, probably my second or third favorite off War, but they've kind of worn it into the ground live. For me, the U2 360 tour was refreshing in that, at least for the first couple of legs, there was no "Bullet the Blue Sky," no "Pride," no "I Will Follow," no "Desire," and no "New Year's Day." Great songs each, I love them all, but they needed a break.

U2, and its fans by extension, are in an extremely fortunate position in that they have three decades of material to work from. There's an entire generation whose knowledge of U2 starts with "Beautiful Day." Yeah, when you sing "Mysterious Ways" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday" they recognize them, but they don't know it's U2. This means that U2 has literally decades worth of flexibility in their set lists, and for each decade they're going to have fans in the audience. I loved that they dropped all those '80s songs and yet still had a set list full of hits. Do they really need to bring these songs back so soon? The band has more than gotten the value out of the songs, so let them refresh for a tour or two. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that.

McCartney christens Consol with high-energy show

Along with being the cute Beatle and the ballad Beatle, Paul McCartney was always the jet-set Beatle. He liked to be where the action was and, all these years later, he still craves that big spotlight.

He opened the new Mets stadium last summer, he hits the big charity blowouts, and Wednesday night, he answered the call to christen the Consol Energy Center in a city he hadn't played in 20 years.

At 8:23 (fashionably late), he took the stage, answering the future trivia question of what would be the first song played at Consol to a live audience. Sticking to the script of his current tour, it was "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" right into "Jet," a fun show-setting blast from the most beloved of his Wings' albums, "Band on the Run."

Either it's the vegetarian diet or there's an aging painting of him in the attic, because, at 68, Sir Paul looks nothing like "a relic from a different age," while having a remarkably youthful voice to match. He looks the same as he ever did in a black Beatles suit and he passed the rock 'n' roll shouter test quickly.

"We are the first people to play here -- and you are the first people to watch us play here," he said. "I think we look pretty cool."

When the Beatles played one of the first big rock shows at the Civic Arena in 1964, the Fab Four did their standard 30-minute set to 12,000 screaming fans, many of whom were there last night, and then ran for a plane.

Despite his age, the modern McCartney set runs nearly three hours and is packed with a Springsteen-sized 39 songs, about 22 of them from the Beatles catalog. The climax is pure Beatlemania, starting with a rousing "Ob-La Di, Ob-La-Da."

The early part of the set jumped through his career -- "Letting Go" from Wings (with a shredding solo by Rusty Anderson), the jubilant Beatles classics "All My Loving" and "Got to Get You Into My Life," and a contemporary shot with the noisy rocker "Highway" from his Fireman project.

The show was rich with tributes to fallen friends and loved ones. Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" was tacked onto a super-charged "Let Me Roll It," leading to a sorry about Hendrix learning "Sgt. Pepper" three days after it was released, which he called one of the greatest musical honors he experienced.

"My Love" was lovingly sung for Linda and "the lovers" in the house. The gentle acoustic "Here Today" was a love song for John Lennon, a "conversation we never had." Later, he even touched on his former writing mate's songbook with an abbreviated "A Day in the Life" (strange hearing his voice on that) paired with "Give Peace a Chance."

For George Harrison, he led a ukele sing along on "Something" that blossomed into a soaring Wings-like version. The gorgeous "Eleanor Rigby" was, of course, for all the lonely people.

As the show wore on, the Beatle never wore out, ripping through screamers like "Back in the USSR" and "I've Got a Feeling" 25 songs and two hours in. He climaxed the main set at the piano with a picture-perfect "Let It Be," a "Live and Let Die" that sounded like it blew up the Consol Center ("ay-yi-yi" he joked, holding his ears) and a joyous arm-waving "Hey Jude."

The hits kept coming through two encores highlighted by "Get Back" at a fast gallop and the bittersweetness of "Yesterday" quickly offset by the metal chaos of "Helter Shelter."

As for the evening's other star, the Consol passed its first test as a concert venue. As previously noted, it looks like a prettier Petersen Events Center on steroids and was able to accommodate the tour's screens, which were massive.

The long wait for Mr. McCartney to take the stage wasn't so bad as the arena was bathed in a soothing blue light ... with no clashing orange seats!

Did it sound better than the dome? Hard to say. It seemed shinier but so did everything about the place. Plus, the crew for this former Beatle would have made it sparkle in an airplane hangar.

When the singer yelled "How're the people in the back there?" they jumped up in a wave and seemed positively delighted.

Energy center indeed.  "

Can anybody tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good they die young
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Moonie?
Can anybody tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good they die young
You know, I just looked around and he's gone

Anybody here seen my old friend Saint Sway?
Can anybody tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good they die young
You know, I just looked around and he's gone

Didn't you love the things they stood for
Didn't they try to find the good in you and me
And we'll be free
Someday soon and it'sa gonna be one day

Anybody here seen my old friend Sir Stonesalot
I thought I saw him walk up over the hill with JB, Moonie and Sway

THE CONCERT

The show started around 8:10pm. People were delayed getting into the building because a couple of escalators weren't working.

Paul was in a terrific mood. He was very animated and was extremely interactive with audience all night. He talked directly to people throughout the show.

YE' MON!

Before Paul's introduction to "Highway" he said, "We played here last night, this is a really cool place. We are going to play some old songs and some new songs and some inbetween songs. This is a new song from the album made by my alter ego The Fireman."(Paul speaks with a Jamaican accent) "The Fireman is savin' the nation from the conflagration, in a spirit of jubilation and celebration, with a minimum of, perspiration. Irie!"

Paul commented about the audience being all ages and said he saw "a lot of really young people (in the audience)... I love it."

Hope Of Deliverance

When the time came for Paul to take off his jacket, female fans screamed. He said, "That's the wardrobe change for the night, but you never know," which encouraged more screams.

We Get Married

As Paul sang 'My Love" there was a couple in the front row, Luke and Mikala (sp?) who had just become engaged with a proposal during the song. The couple kissed and hugged. Paul searched the audience for the couple and upon spotting them, nodded and gave them a thumbs up. Mikala proudly held up her left hand sporting the engagement ring when a spotlight shined on the happy couple. After Paul finished "My Love" he made the 'heart sign" with his hands over his head. Then he ran down to the side of the stage where they were, pointed at them, gave them the 'thumbs up' and blew a kiss at them with both hands. Then he clasped his hands over his head and shook them in a victory gesture.

Go On Wave

During "And I Love Her" Paul's backside was showcased on the jumbtron to the delight of female fans, but Paul feigned annoyance when they cheered loudly for his butt waving.

Signs That Work

Right after "Eleanor Rigby" Macca said, "There are some signs requesting a song. For this nice girl over here... (he pointed first to Sandy Lopez holding a sign that read "RAM ON PLEASE!" He continued, " so this is for you... and you." (Paul points to another person with a similar sign). When the song finished he turned to Sandy for approval and she put her hands over her head in the shape of a heart. Paul nodded.

Baby Face Time On The Jumbotron

Right before "Dance Tonight" Paul said, "Right down here is a little baby. Hi there..." (waves to the baby) "That is a cute baby. He's not even, one year old." The baby was shown on the jumbotron. Paul said to the baby... "Can you see yourself on the big screen? If this baby is anything like the ones I know, he will be fast asleep in ten minutes time. Especially when the loud stuff starts." (Paul snores)

The Sprinkler

After "Dance Tonight" he said, "How do you like Abe's dance moves? We like the 'sprinkler'. The next time you're at the party, that's the move. You'll be really popular !"(Paul giggles at the thought). (WEBMASTER'S NOTE: To explain what 'the sprinkler' is, Abe pumps his elbow next to his head with one arm and with the other he points repeatedly like a lawn sprinkler while making silly faces. Followed by the Macarena dance.)

Hometown Hockey Fans Have A New Hero

Right after "Yesterday" Paul said, "This is the last night of our North American tour. Don't know if you noticed, but on this guitar, I always have a little sign on here, but tonight the mayor of Pittsburgh suggested I add another one. " On the video screens they showed the Pittsburgh Penguins sticker on the guitar right above the Detroit Red Wings one. The audience of course cheered except those from Detroit.

Tattoo Thigh Time

"I wish we could do everything that signs ask us to," said Paul. "But we just can't. But this one over here, she wants a tattoo on her thigh and can I sign it. What's a guy to do?," he quipped. The girl had a sign that read "I'm the girl on the flaming pie tattoo it on my thigh." When she was brought onstage, she gave Paul a hug, and touched his Hofner. Paul had her say "Hello Pittsburgh" then say her name and where she was from which was Philadelphia. The audience booed in protest. Paul said, "Now don't be like that." Then he said to her, "So what's yer thigh say?"

Smile Away

Paul was confused as to what she wanted. The woman grabbed her sign that Brian Riddle was holding so Paul could read her request. After he read it she took a photo of herself and Paul with her own camera by turning the lens towards her and clicking the shutter. When he signed her thigh, she extended her leg and lifted her skirt up slightly. Paul had to squat down to sign. She lingered on the stage and left after he patted her on the head to let her know it was time to leave. Paul waved bye, bye to her and said, "You'd just know she's from Philadelphia!" People booed again, loudly...

Rock-a-bye Baby

Later on in the show, he looked over to see if the baby was sleeping and said, "That baby, he or she is still rocking!"

Hey, Hey We're The ???

Band dance at the very end of the show: They all held hand as they bent over and crossed the left foot over the right in unison taking very small steps.

Brian twirled Rusty when they grabbed hands before they bowed.

Signs in the audience that Paul didn't see Sad

Macca ROCKS!
Paul Marry Me
My heart went boom...
Sign My Tattoos (several signs)
Sprinkle Us Abe

Someone threw a bouquet of flowers which Macca picked up and clutched to his chest. He waved the flowers when he waved to people.

more later...   "
