" July 16, 2010 -- Denver Post

Paul McCartney rolls back the years at Pepsi Center love fest

Is it perverse to call Paul McCartney "Beatlesesque"?

Of course it is, since he's the most enduring member of the most enduringly popular rock band in history. But one couldn't help thinking that as McCartney dashed onto the Pepsi Center stage Thursday night - particularly since he was wearing an outfit more than a little reminiscent of his old band from Liverpool.

A black, high-collared suit and black boots were accented by McCartney's trademark Hofner semi-acoustic bass, an instrument that the thin performer still dwarfs.

Even at 68, McCartney is a ridiculously charming, unreasonably boyish performer with a strong, gorgeous voice. He still rises from his piano in triumph or lifts his guitar skyward after nearly every song, clapping and dancing and spurring the audience to greater expressions of adulation. He's clearly enjoying his job.

And so was the crowd. A standing ovation greeted McCartney's appearance, one of many he would receive throughout the night. People waved homemade signs with messages such as "Can't Buy Me Love, But This Is Pretty Darn Close." They unfolded giant paper hearts and waved them above their heads.

McCartney responded in kind, repeatedly connecting with the audience by telling stories, dedicating songs to lost friends and lovers and generally being an earnest, sentimental chap.

Playing as a quintet, McCartney's crack band effortlessly traversed his songwriting catalog, including older numbers "All My Loving," "Paperback Writer," "Blackbird," "Eleanor Rigby" and other Beatles classics in which decades instantly melted away. Noisier, more ornery songs from McCartney's "alter-ego" band, the Fireman, or songs from his soft-rock days with Wings ("Band on the Run," etc.) sounded just as vital and fussed-over, if less memorably so.

McCartney, of course, is more than the Beatles, even if that group's songs received the strongest applause of any during his long, sold-out set - which was delayed by nearly an hour (reportedly because of a late flight), initially causing long lines to form outside the venue shortly before the advertised set time.

And there were the occasional missteps, from a distressingly bass-heavy "I'm Looking Through You" to an awkward, pyrotechnics-ridden "Live and Let Die."

But fans were entirely forgiving of both the late start and the mixed-bag song list as McCartney delivered a bewildering number of pop and rock classics, hit after brilliant hit. And he's an expert at working the crowd into a lather, walking on stage with a giant Colorado state flag and waving it above his head just before he began his first encore song.

McCartney last played Denver five years ago, and after his Thursday night performance, it would be a shame if another five passed before his return. "

Paris Hilton says reports that she was detained on the French island of Corsica for possession of marijuana are "completely false."

Agence France-Presse was among news outlets to report that police briefly held the heiress Saturday after she arrived at the airport in Figari on a private jet from Paris. The report, which cited police sources, said police found less than a gram of cannabis in Hilton's handbag and that she was soon released without charge.

"So sick of people making up rumors about me," Hilton tweeted in her defense Saturday. "The latest one about me is completely false too. Don't believe what you read. Silly nonsense."

Hilton later added: "The stories saying I have been arrested are completely false! I am having the best vacation of my life!"

Hilton was recently detained in the South African city of Port Elizabeth during the World Cup on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The case was later dropped and no charges were filed.

U2's massive 360° Tour has helped propel the band to Number One on Forbes' annual report on top-earning musicians. Bono and Co. scored the top spot on the list by netting $130 million in the past 12 months. They're followed by AC/DC — who just wrapped their 108-city Black Ice world tour on June 28th — with $144 million. Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and Britney Spears round out the Top Five.

Forbes calculates rockers' earnings based on net income from ticket sales, record sales and endorsement deals between June 2009 and June 2010. Unsurprisingly, album sales didn't drive most artists to the top of the list — giant tours and strategic corporate team-ups were responsible for most of the profits. Lady Gaga is the youngest performer in the Top 10, bringing in $62 million to score her first-ever appearance on the list thanks partially to partnerships with Polaroid, Virgin Mobile and Monster, who puts out her Heartbeats ear buds. Gaga just edged out Madonna, who has made the countdown for the past four years and raked in major cash last year on her giant Sticky & Sweet Tour.

Power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z both appear in the Top 10 individually, although Beyoncé out-earned her husband by $24 million last year. Kenny Chesney is the highest-ranked country musician on the list at Number Nine, earning $50 million dollars.

U2's 360° Tour requires $750,000 a day in overhead, but the giant show earned the band $311 million in gross box office receipts in 2009 alone. The band was recently forced to postpone the summer leg of the trek to spring 2011 due to Bono's back injury, which required surgery. Other touring woes may have an effect on the list next year considering this summer has been especially cruel on live acts. "In today's world artists have to tour to make money," Pollstar editor Gary Bongiovanni told Forbes. "They can't just sit at home and collect their royalties and expect to make their mortgage payments."

" Paul McCartney, rock star, family man, northern lad, contender for most famous person on the planet, is leaning back on a squashy sofa. In just a short time, he will announce that he is not going to lunge forward and kill me. However, for now, he's musing on his favourite-ever vegetarian ingredients.

"Could I have a few?" he asks eventually. You can have as many as you like, you're Paul McCartney. "OK, so olive oil, balsamic. There's this great hummus you only seem to be able to get here, 'Amvrosia' Ambrosia with a v, I use that a lot. Lemon juice, salt, spinach leaves, rocket leaves, plum tomatoes. You see, it's getting good already."

You're a decent cook then?

"I'm not bad. I can turn a meal out."

McCartney loves steamed vegetables. "If I go on tour and eat a lot of restaurant or hotel food, I come back, and it's like, yeah, broccoli! So, if I'm cooking, I'll be steaming vegetables, making some nice salad, that kind of stuff."

Do you follow recipes?

"No, I just make it up, like Linda did."

We meet at the wonderfully named Hog Hill Mill, McCartney's private recording studio in Sussex. As so often happens with extraordinarily famous people, there is that initial disbelieving lurch when he's there standing in front you famously youthful face, slightly boppy "musical" movement to his walk, 20 years dropping away when he smiles.

The upstairs room where we talk is full of memorabilia from all points of his 50-odd year career. Just before our meeting, McCartney went to the White House to receive the Gershwin award for popular music, and sang "Michelle" for the Obamas, which he describes as a career high. "Obama leaned over and was singing it to her. Someone later said they were like a couple of teenagers."

At just turned 68, McCartney seems like a bundle of energy himself. After our interview, he will return downstairs to the studio to play with a new computer programming system for music. He's not anti-technology then? "Not really, but this is the only time I'd sit with my head in a computer for six hours." Are you the type who gets bored when they don't work? McCartney thinks for a moment. "Probably."

We're here to talk about Meat Free Monday an idea McCartney first heard about in America, which he feels ties in with the UN's 2006 Livestock's Long Shadow report, which outlined how the livestock industry was responsible for more greenhouse gases than transport. "Though the UN, who are presumably carnivore, went further they said, the best thing you can do for the planet is go vegetarian," says McCartney.

He felt that one day a week was "do-able". "If you ask people to go completely vegetarian, it may be too challenging. This wasn't asking so much."

What would he say to those who argue that one day a week isn't enough? "I think any move in the right direction is enough. If you want my real point of view then, yeah, I would encourage people to go vegetarian, but that's not what this campaign is about. And it's not what the UN campaign was about."

McCartney says he has a lot of friends who eat meat, and likens it to religion. "I wouldn't want someone to be bossing me, saying, 'You should be a Buddhist.' I'd say, 'Lay off, I'll make my own mind up, thank you!' Similarly, I don't want to go laying it on people 'You really should be vegetarian.' I like them to come to it themselves."

What food did McCartney enjoy BV (Before Vegetarianism)?

"Just normal restaurant food really. I'd go to America and have the biggest steaks in the world. So big I'd have to give half of it away. Or I'd have chicken kiev with all the butter oozing out of it. That was great."

U2 is reportedly in the studio today, but it's anyone's guess where and what they're working on. Dave Hollister, an R&B singer/wongwriter/producer, posted on Twitter about 30 minutes ago that he's "in the studio working with U2! Man I'm excited! Bono baby!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Dave Hollister tweet

Hollister is a former member of the R&B quartet BLACKstreet and has also released several solo albums. You can learn more about him at allmusic or Wikipedia.

" Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.
Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.
Got some pretty little women there, I'm gonna get me one.
Standing on the corner, crawl straight in my hand
With my Kansas City Baby, now by the Kansas City world.

Well the water in the city, well, taste like Georgia Pie
Going to Kansas City where it tastes like sugar, oh I know it.
Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.
Got some pretty little women there, I'm gonna get me one.

Kansas City, here every night you gave me none
Kansas City, surely looked like they were done
You know they turned it around now Baby, gonna scratch it, gonna run.

And rock with my Baby, rock with my Baby, one more time
Rock with my Baby, Kansas City Baby, one more time
Went to the city for, for this souvenir in my hand.

Well I might take a plane, might take a train
If I have to walk you won't grind in the same.
Oh, Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.
Got some crazy little women there, I'm gonna get me one. "

With the U2 360 Tour set to resume in a little more than two weeks, activity should be picking up at the Olympic Stadium in Turin, Italy. The city even offers a nearby webcam for those of us who want to keep an eye on The Claw as it's being built.

Italian fan site U2place.com reports that U2 has booked the stadium for stage arrival/construction as of today (July 21), and they say the band could show up as early as Monday, July 26th, to start tour rehearsals. In other words ... here we go!

" FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ICONIC ROCKER, BRIAN RAY, RELEASES SOLO SINGLES FROM UPCOMING ALBUM THIS WAY UP

RAY BALANCES TOURING THE WORLD WITH THE PAUL MCCARTNEY BAND AND MAKING A SOLO STATEMENT WITH WILD GUITARS AND BIG HOOKS

Award winning songwriter, singer and musician Brian Ray, best known as the ultimate sideman guitarist and bassist for Paul McCartney, takes a step out front in the spotlight and releases two songs from his upcoming solo album This Way Up.

Brian Ray has been a songwriter and in-demand recording and touring musician for acts like Etta James, Smokey Robinson, Rob Stewart, Kelly Clarkson, and Chris Cornell (whoever Brian wants to name here) to name a few, but for nearly a decade Brian Ray has been touring the world's most iconic venues and stadiums in the Paul McCartney band. "I have been on one hell of a ride with this band" says Ray. "Just the last 8 weeks alone have been mind-blowing, including a gig in Mexico City for 110,000 screaming fans, playing in the White House for President Obama and the First Family, and the Isle of Wight Festival, just to name some big moments for us recently."

On Tuesday, July 6th, in the midst of Brian's summer tour of duty, THE ICON MUSIC GROUP (a Sony distributed label) will be releasing world-wide the Brian Ray advance solo singles "I Found You" and "Happy Ending" wherever digital music is sold. The album is slated for release later this summer. "I Found You" was written by Brian Ray and Oliver Leiber (son of Jerry Leiber of Leiber & Stoller). "It's a rambunctious song, an expression from the best part of me, looking in every possible place for the love and peace we all wantand finding it right before my eyes, where I least expected it!" The song features a "guitar marching band" with approximately 40 guitars "having a guitar tantrum" says Ray, along with a big marching drum beat. Notably the song also features some of Ray's rock star pals: Scott Shriner (of Weezer), drums and bass by Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher (of Elvis Costello's band) and Adam MacDougal (of The Black Crows) on wild Wurlitzer piano. The second single "Happy Ending" (also penned by Ray & Leiber) is a modern rock "post sexual revolution, where the hell are we now? kind of song" according to Brian. "It's about a guy trolling the internet, hooking up, finding 'her', then discovering that HE wants more than just a casual fling, while SHE smiles and slips out the door." The song also features Shriner (of Weezer), Russ Irwin (of Aerosmith) and Jason Page. Both songs were recorded and mixed by Joe Zook (Weezer, OneRepublic, Pink, Leona Lewis) and produced by Brian Ray.

"Both Rui DaSilva (Icon Music Group Chairman) and myself are thrilled and honored to have Brian Ray join our label," commented Rob Christie, President of Icon Records. "It's iconic rock to the core."

Brian can be seen this summer on the North American leg of McCartney's tour, resuming July 10th in San Francisco, then on to more high-octane shows at various stadiums and arenas throughout the U.S. and Canada."Playing alongside Paul McCartney is a privilege beyond description. It isn't a job, it's a way of livingand I'm more than a little bit addicted to it!" says Ray."He is an inspiration to me and to the band at every show. Besides singing like a god, his music is right at the top of my favorite songs ever written. He is the ultimate entertainer; he performs with so much passion, grace and abandonpure rock & roll nitro with just the right amount of glycerin."

Brian Ray's advance solo singles are available, at iTunes; Amazon.com and wherever digital downloads are sold.

July 25, 2010 -- The Kansas City Star
Review | Paul McCartney at the Sprint Center

Paul McCartney performed at the Sprint Center on Saturday evening, July 24, 2010 in Kansas City.

When tickets went on sale for Paul McCartney's first show in Kansas City in more then 17 years, the ticket prices - as high as $250 - made even some hard-core Beatles fans mutter and stew. Saturday night during his show at the Sprint Center, McCartney took some of the sting out of that sticker shock with some impressive numbers of his own.

The show lasted about 12 minutes shy of three hours. The setlist comprised more than three dozen songs and touched many phases of his Beatles, Wings and solo careers. McCartney, who turned 68 in June, sang every one of those songs in a voice that started off strong and did not falter all night.

He left the stage only briefly before each encore. He also played an array of instruments - bass, guitar (lead and rhythm), ukulele, mandolin, piano - and acted like a cheerleader, master of ceremonies and earnest curator of the music that made him a legend.

Of the 15,000-plus who attended this show, most, I'm assuming, will put it down as one of their favorite shows ever, and not because they're rationalizing the ticket price. It was one of those shows - certainly the year's best, certainly among the best ever at the Sprint Center and probably among anyone's shows of a lifetime. Expectations were high coming in; he exceeded them.

He opened with some classic Wings, "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" and then "Jet," from the "Band on the Run" album. Then came "All My Loving," the first of 23 Beatles songs. For the first third of the show, he shuffled them among his post-Beatle catalog, songs like "Highway" from his "Fireman" album and "Let Me Roll It," which he appended with "Foxy Lady" as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

McCartney was all-business most of the night, but he sprinkled some light chit-chat and anecdotes into his performance. He talked about Hendrix performing live "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" only days after the album had been released. He told the crowd he played "Paperback Writer" with the same guitar he used to record it, an Epiphone Casino. He kept saying how glad he was to be in Kansas (he was pardoned for that), but he also grunted a few lines of "Kansas City," the one from the musical "Oklahoma!"

He did not acknowledge Ringo Starr but he paid tribute to the Beatles who have passed on, first with "Here Today," a hymn for John Lennon. A few songs later, for George Harrison, he played a version of "Something" that started off as a jaunty ukelele number (Harrison was a master of the uke, he said), that turned quickly into something heavier and more like the original. All the while, black-and-white images of Harrison appeared on the video screen behind McCartney and the band. Later, he would end "A Day In The Life" with several choruses of "Give Peace a Chance."

He brought a four-piece band that added lots of bright, clean harmonies and played the best-known parts of the best-known songs close to the ways everyone knows them. The video screens showed mostly stage and crowd shots. During "Blackbird," the main screen shows an image of a tree in white silhouette, and a moon descended from above. During "Live and Let Die," flashpots and fireworks detonated from the foot of the stage. The show, which plateaued a bit during the first hour, picked up considerable steam in the second, starting with "My Love," then a version of "I've Just Seen a Face" that had some Buck Owens flavor. When the crowd gave that one a big ovation, McCartney dubbed this "cowboy country."

He would toss in a couple recent numbers, like the frothy ditty "Dance Tonight," and then another "Fireman" song, the joyous "Sing the Changes," in which he proved he can out-anthem Springsteen and Bon Jovi combined.

The show took off from there, to another level of energy and connection between him, his band and the crowd. The mood was infectious. When he sang "Lady Madonna" and then "Get Back" during the first encore, a couple of KCMO police officers watching from the back of the lower level smiled and bobbed their heads gently.

It wasn't just the fail-proof pure-gold set list, songs that carry so much sentiment and so many memories - including the dazzling performance of "Paperback Writer." It was the energy coming off the stage, most of it from a guy who seemed to be getting as much joy and satisfaction out of the night as everyone else. His stamina was astounding. So was his ability to change gears, dramatically and seamlessly. Like going from the warm and honeyed version of "Yesterday" to the primal screaming of "Helter Skelter." Or from "Let It Be" to "Live and Let Die" and then "Hey Jude," which ignited the loudest sing-along of the night.

He ended the evening with the reprise version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - "we're sorry but it's time to go" - then "The End" from "Abbey Road," which includes one of his most famous lyrics, the one about getting as much love out of life as you put into io it. It was the perfect close to a show that will be enshrined by most who saw it and were stirred into a deep and warm sentimental state. In the end, maybe money can't buy you love, but it can sure buy you three unforgettable hours of nostalgia and joy.

Paul McCartney treats packed Bridgestone Arena to three hours of gems

There were no curtain drops, flashing lights or explosions when Sir Paul McCartney stepped onto the stage at Bridgestone Arena Monday night. Just a 68-year-old rock legend - and arguably the world's most famous living musician - emerging from the shadows and calmly greeting a Nashville audience for the first time.

It was the audience that made the moment pure pandemonium - this was, of course, the former Beatle's first time performing live in Music City, some 46 years after his famous band first arrived in the U.S. As the cheers refused to die out in those first moments, McCartney gestured at the crowd to his bandmates, as if to say, "I'm going to like these guys."

McCartney and Nashville got along splendidly Monday night, as he and his four-piece backing band treated a packed house to three hours of Beatles, Wings and solo gems.

"Oh man, it's great to be back," McCartney said after the opening one-two punch of "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" and "Jet." "This is such a cool scene, I'm going to take a second here, just to take it all in for myself."

After taking it in, McCartney composed himself and quickly snapped his band into Beatlemania classic "All My Loving," to the house's delight.

Crowd-pleasing Beatles cuts were spread deliberately across the first half of McCartney's set, thrown in whenever the procession of post-'60s tunes needed an extra jolt of energy. In a way, McCartney's forced to be his own opening act at his shows. His laudable solo output doesn't deserve short shrift, but the spectre of the Fab Four - and the knowledge that the set will progress into a parade of their best-known tunes - can't help but hover perpetually over the evening.

An early mini set of piano-driven songs, including late Beatles cut "The Long and Winding Road," was probably the night's lowlight - both McCartney and his fans are too young at heart to deserve a smooth, bordering-on-schmaltzy run of tunes. But from there, the evening artfully ramped up, moving from acoustic-based classics ("I'm Looking Through You," "Two of Us," "Blackbird") to ukulele tributes to departed Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison, as well as few of Macca's finest moments, both famous ("Eleanor Rigby") and obscure ("Ram On").

"I knew we were going to have a good time," he said after wrapping up "Band On the Run." "It's Nashville, baby."

An appearance by the almost-never-performed-live "White Album" cut "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" ensured that the good time continued, though neither Lennon-driven compositions "A Day in the Life" nor "Give Peace a Chance" were done total justice by being combined in a medley. Luckily, that last moment of serious emotional weight made way for pure, unabashed fun.

The jaw-dropping array of pyrotechnics and fireworks that accompanied "Live and Let Die," as it's been for decades, left the crowd screaming for more and McCartney comically plugging his ears. He sang official set-closer "Hey Jude" with the same soul-shouting bravado he's given that tune since 1968. The song has its jaded, radio-weary detractors, but no one seemed to be refusing to sing along Monday during its epic refrain.

McCartney returned for the show's first encore triumphantly waving a giant Tennessee state flag. "You like your music in this town!" he said between "Daytripper" and "Lady Madonna." He picked out a sign held by a young man who looked about 12 in the front row, which read "Let me play a song with you." McCartney brought him on stage, but after being unable to determine what instrument he could play, instructed him to "just groove" for the next number. The fan dutifully shook his hips and joined in on the choruses of "Get Back," and his Caddyshackevoking moves became a running joke between McCartney and his band for the rest of the evening.

McCartney also invited up a young woman whose sign noted that she had a tattoo of his Beatles-era bass guitar on her back, and wished for the star to sign it. McCartney obliged on stage, and showed the crowd his signature.

A few of the Beatles' bombastic, would've-been arena rockers (they were recorded after the band retired from touring) closed out the evening: the proto-heavy metal number "Helter Skelter," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" and swan song "The End."

A torrent of confetti washed down upon the crowd as McCartney headed off the stage. Normally, it's the sort of spectacle that bands use during the climax of their closing song, but it was saved for just the right moment Monday night - as a living legend, live for the first time before a Nashville audience, sincerely thanked his fans and said goodnight.

July 27, 2010 -- Macca Report News Exclusive!!!!
by Sandy Lopez (Macca Reporter)

Paul sings Tequilla and Ram On for Nashville, kid dances on stage with Paul, Macca signs a Hofner tatoo

The concert started around 8:15 pm even though the ticket called for a 7:30pm start. The weather in Nashville was stormy. North of the city a tornado touched down just after 7pm. There were power outtages everywhere with heavy rain and dangerous lightening but everything was fine inside Bridgestone Arena. There was not an empty seat in the house.

Nashville Concert Highlights

Right before "Get Back" a man in the front row held up a sign that said: "I would love to sing with you." The man was referring to his 10-year-old son sitting next to him. Paul asked the boy, "Do you really want so sing with me? He nodded yes. Paul looked over at the man. "Are you his dad?" The man nodded. Paul asked, "What does your son play?" Paul realized that the two didn't understand English very well. As it turns out they were from Mexico. Paul brought the kid onstage and talked to him in Spanish. He wasn't sure if the kid could sing so he told him to dance, which the boy did. Macca suggested, "How about we play, you groove?" The kid rocked his fists and Paul did it back to him. At one point the boy came over to the microphone with Paul and sang along with him. Paul said, "Oh you do sing."

"Mrs. Vandebilt" went over very big with the Nashville crowd.

After "Got To Get You Into My Life" a woman held up a sign that read: "I want a hug." Paul said, "I want a hug too!" Paul hugged himself for her.

Rusty and Brian where dancing around with their guitars and Rusty's guitar broke! A roadie came running out with a replacement.

Right before Paul sang "Ram On" he pointed to several signs in the audience requesting the song and said,"I can see signs requesting this next one. I will do it for you, and you, and you... For all of you really."

Whe Paul introduced "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" he said, "....There's a bit in the middle (of the song) that you might want to sing along with. I'll say "Now YOU" and that's your clue."

For the first encore Paul carried the Tennessee flag and Wix had the Union Jack. For the second encore Paul came out dancing like the Mexican kid saying, "If you go to a party, that's the move. You saw it here first!"

Before "Helter Skelter" a woman with a Hofner tattoo on her lower back had a sign that read, "Your Hofner is tattooed on my back, will you please sign it?" Paul said, "Later when I have time." Later, Paul told her to come onstage. At first he was concerned that the tattoo might be in an area that he wouldn't be able to sign. He said, "I don't know if I can sign this. I could get in trouble for that," which got laughs. When it was done, the woman got a kiss and she gave Paul a hug.

After "The Long And Winding Road" Paul said, "If you watch this broadcast (Gershwin Prize PBS) on Wednesday you will get to see Faith Hill sing this song. "

Signs in the audience

A family held an 8 ft. banner that read: "We are so proud of you congratulations on the Gershwin Prize." Paul pointed to and nodded at the banner which had a photo of him and Obama on it.

"Will you sign my butt?" Paul said, "I'm not doing that."

"Free massage here".... He pointed that sign out and giggled.

End of the show autographs

A man brought a framed portrait of Paul he did and Paul signed it for him.

Paul signed a Beatles Rock Band Hofner

Claw is Built; U2 Expected Soon
Posted: July 27, 2010
By: m2 / @mattmcgee

U2 has apparently not arrived in Turin yet, but when they do, the U2 360 tour stage will be ready and waiting for them. U2place.com has posted three photos from inside Olympic Stadium. Here's one:

...

Turin stage

It looks like everything related to the Claw itself is done, except the video screen is missing. And the stage where the band and gear goes isn't there yet, either.

Meanwhile, U2Italia.com says that the band may not arrive in Turin until Thursday, and rehearsals could start on Friday.

The second week of December is firming as the window of U2's return to Brisbane, provided Bono bounces, ah... back from surgery.

Moves are under way to get the Irish rock monolith sorted for a Suncorp Stadium assault, the preferred venue after the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre left a bad taste in the group's mouth in 2006.

It's understood police licensing have signed off on the event, however, a well-placed industry insider said U2 management were still awaiting a medical report on Bono's back before locking a date in.

The frontman's slipped disc, injured during rehearsal in Germany in May, has cost his insurance broker more than $18 million, The Sun has reported. This forced the cancellation of the band's "360 Degrees" tour, which had already made them the music world's biggest earners in 2009-10 with $130 million according to Forbes magazine.

It's been widely rumoured the Irish touring juggernaut will restart in Oz, where the lack of AFL and rugby league games over summer make it easier to book stadium dates at short notice.

U2 in Turin, Rehearsing New Songs?
Posted: July 28, 2010
By: Matt McGee / @mattmcgee

U2 has arrived in Turin and already rehearsed two new, never-before-heard songs at Olympic Stadium. That's the word from this article on Italian site U2place.com, which got the news from fans hanging around outside the stadium. The article says that Bono's voice and Edge's guitar were "readily recognizable" inside the stadium. Commentary: No doubt that U2 knows fans are listening outside the stadium and will spread news online about everything they hear/see. So, to begin day one of rehearsals with two new songs is a bit of a throw-down. It would've been quite easy and predictable to crank out "Get On Your Boots" and "Vertigo," but no.

UPDATE: U2place.com has now removed the mention of two new songs being rehearsed and says the fan reports are a bit confusing.

Fans outside the stadium also report that U2 is expected to move some of its rehearsals to the Palaisozaki, an indoor facility adjacent to Olympic Stadium. That'll give the band freedom to work on the show (presumably) out of fans' sight and sound. They did a similar thing last summer while rehearsing in Barcelona.

Irish rocker Bono has been soaking up the sun with top music star Will.i.am -- sparking rumours they are set to collaborate once more.

The Black Eyed Peas frontman is the latest of Bono's A-list pals to jet to the south of France to keep him company as he recovers from his recent back troubles.

The U2 singer has had regular hush-hush visits recently from VIP friends, including Rod Stewart and Lance Armstrong.

The Dublin star (50) and his family have been holed up in their Eze villa for the past month, while he recuperates from his serious spinal surgery last May.

The Herald can exclusively reveal that his most recent impromptu visitor was concerned pal Will.i.am (35).

The pair met up for a top secret dinner in one of the plushest areas in the millionaire's playground of Monaco

Bono invited the top US singer-producer to visit him after hearing that Will.i.am was performing an exclusive DJ set in nearby St Tropez last week.

The singer, who was recently linked to Cheryl Cole, is rumoured to have been paid a mesmerising €100,000 for a two-hour set at a private party in the exclusive Byblos nightclub.

A source close to the singers revealed: "Will.i.am hates helicopters but he willingly jumped on one to spend a few hours with Bono. They've been friends for quite a number of years and have loads in common aside from music.

"Obviously Will.i.am produced a few tracks on the last U2 album, so it's no surprise that their latest meeting has prompted speculation that he and Bono could be soon ready to hit the studio together again."

Bono is expected to return to the stage in Turin on August 6.

he Kinks Vs Van Halen: Battle Finally Commences.
gbarton / News / 26/07/2010 12:15pm

It’s taken him more than 30 years, but the The Kinks’ Dave Davies has finally offered his opinion on Van Halen’s cover of You Really Got Me. His verdict? “I’m sure Eddie Van Halen played better when he was drunk.”
Classic Rock’s Rob Hughes met up with Davies last week and they got talking about Van Halen’s 1978 cover of The Kinks classic.
Davies didn’t seem overly impressed by the VH version. Here’s what he had to say:
“Van Halen’s version was very Middle America. It was like, ‘Hey man, look at me with my tight trousers! Here’s our version of You Really Got Me!’
“There’s the thing: good art isn’t always about having the comfiest technique. I shouldn’t encourage him, but I’m sure Eddie Van Halen played better when he was drunk. But it must be a good record if people like it.
“We got pissed off though, when we played America. The Kinks had an album out called Low Budget [1979] and we ended up touring and playing stadiums. Some kid came up to me after one of the gigs and said: ‘I like your cover of Van Halen’s You Really Got Me.’ You have to smile sometimes.”

July 29, 2010 -- Charlotte Observer

Paul McCartney in Charlotte: 'Absolutely amazing'

Anticipation was high Wednesday before Paul McCartney hit a Charlotte stage for the first time in 17 years.

Backed by only a four-piece band, McCartney hit the Time Warner Cable Arena stage around 8:20 p.m. in a snazzy pinstriped jacket and his famed violin-shaped bass guitar for the opening of "Venus and Mars," which quickly segued into "Rock Show" followed by "Jet."

Wings' bluesy "Letting Go" captured the big rock 'n' roll feel of McCartney and his band, a group of seasoned players who balanced professionalism with charisma. That was particularly true of animated drummer Abe Laboriel Jr., who clanked his cowbell, sang backup and even danced during "Dance Tonight."

"You're a great crowd already," McCartney praised, only six songs into the set.

He picked up a Les Paul for "Let Me Roll It," soloing madly through a few instrumental bars of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" (a trick he repeated toward the end of the show during "I've Got a Feeling"). Hendrix's was the first of many tributes paid to fallen friends and loved ones, including his late wife Linda, for whom he played "My Love."

He played part of fellow Beatle George Harrison's "Something" (a huge crowd sing-along) on the ukulele that Harrison gave him. And he remembered John Lennon with an intimate solo acoustic rendering of "Here Today," a song McCartney wrote after Lennon's death. Later in the set, the combo of "A Day in the Life" and "Give Peace a Chance" was an even more poignant reminder of Lennon's legacy.

One fan complained of having seen him play the same songs repeatedly on this tour, but added that over 38 years and multiple shows, she's never seen him play a less than fantastic show.

For those who had never seen McCartney, or at least not since he played Raleigh in 2002, the inclusion of "Paperback Writer," the moving "Let It Be," the pyrotechnics-powered "Live and Let Die" and "Hey Jude" (played at a psychedelic piano) were essential.

At 68, McCartney proved impressive in both stamina and voice. As one police officer working the arena pointed out, he didn't rely on a bevy of backup singers.

"There are no words," said Rock Hill-based music promoter Stephanie Moore, 28, of her second McCartney show - her first was at age 11, an experience she says changed her life.

Back 17 years later and again with her parents, she beamed shortly before the show's end: "Absolutely amazing. My advice is to start saving up for next time he tours. Go see him. No matter the price."
