Holy Prepuce

The holy prepuce, or holy foreskin (Latin: præputium or prepucium) is one of several relics attributed to Jesus. At various points in history, a number of churches in Europe claimed to possess Jesus' foreskin, sometimes at the same time. Various miraculous powers were ascribed to it.

Review: Paul McCartney in concert

Paul McCartney knows how to make up for lost time.

Since the Beatles' final public concert on Aug. 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park, McCartney has performed in Oakland, San Jose, Mountain View and Daly City. But he went some 44 years without taking the stage in San Francisco proper.

That streak finally came to an end, in royal fashion, when Sir Paul brought his "Up and Coming Tour" to AT&T Park on Saturday night. The 68-year-old former Beatle opened the show with "Venus and Mars," the title track to Wings' fourth album, and went on to deliver nearly 40 other songs during a marathon three-hour set that thrilled the 40,000 fans in attendance.

"It's great to be back here," McCartney commented early in the night to the capacity crowd.

And it was great to have him back, even if it did take him a while to warm up. Credit that to the normally frigid July weather in San Francisco, which had fans wrapped up in ski parkas, wool hats and long scarves, as well as to a set list that initially focused strongly on second-rate (!!@#*!!) Wings numbers ("Letting Go," "Let Me Roll It," "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five") and mediocre (!!!) recent offerings ("Dance Tonight," "Highway").

There were, however, some highlights to be found in the first third of the show, including a high-flying take on "Jet" (from Wings' third and most successful record, 1973's "Band on the Run") and a compelling version of The Beatles' "Got to Get You into My Life" (from 1966's "Revolver"). Even the lesser musical moments must have thrilled big McCartney fans since some of those tunes rank as true rarities on the concert stage for instance, this tour marks the first time that the singer has done "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" live.

Still, it's safe to say that McCartney could have cut 30 minutes from the top of the set and very few would've complained.

Fronting a five-piece band, McCartney was in fine voice and performed on numerous instruments, from bass and guitar to ukulele and piano. He was also in great spirits, although he did point out on several occasions that the chilly weather wasn't ideal.

The weather, which included a fog bank so thick with moisture that it appeared to be raining at times, became a non-issue about halfway through the show as McCartney unleashed a flurry of sensational upbeat numbers. The first was the complicated Wings opus "Band on the Run," one of the finest rollercoaster rides in all of popular music, which led directly into a double-shot from the Beatles' "White Album" (1968) the colorful, bouncy "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (another rarity on the live stage) and the rocketing fan favorite "Back in the U.S.S.R."

McCartney stuck mainly with the Fab Four song book for the remainder of the main set the bluesy "I've Got a Feeling" (from 1970's "Let It Be"), the mesmerizing "A Day in the Life" (1967's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band") and the sing-a-long "Hey Jude" (released as a single in 1968). He also tossed in a taste of John Lennon's 1969 anti-war anthem "Give Peace a Chance" and then performed amid a fireworks display during "Live and Let Die," the title track to a 1973 James Bond film.

It was all Fab Four during the seven songs that comprised the two encores. The two highlights, the somber "Yesterday" and the raucous "Helter Skelter," served to properly underscore McCartney's amazing versatility. He's a man who can break hearts one minute, rock the house the next and come across equally convincing in both endeavors.

In all, it was enough to make fans forgive Sir Paul for his lengthy absence from San Francisco. Let's just hope that he plans a return visit soon like, how about tonight? Check your schedule, Mr. McCartney. We're free, if you are.

July 11, 2010 -- The Examiner San Francisco

A jolly Paul McCartney performs to a packed AT&T Park July 10th

There's nothing better than a performer who does a little jig with glee on stage because he is genuinely happy to be performing for you. Beatle or no, a Paul McCartney is certain to please, even if you're not so familiar with some of his more recent material. The evening of Saturday July 10, 2010 was a cool one, but not so chilly as some Giants fans might have experienced right on The Bay during a San Franciscan summer.

AT&T Park was packed and the energy was buzzing as fans awaited Paul McCartney's first performance in San Francisco since The Beatles' last concert tour appearance at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. McCartney said that things have changed since then, rather than just hearing the screaming girls, we have these "loud things."

I bought the $59 dollar seats, just to see what extra $10 would get me. Turned out to be totally worth it as we were in the View Box in second, row directly over home plate and right smack center.

McCartney and his band played a set list 35 songs long basically alternating between Beatles and non-Beatles tunes. From stage McCartney told stories about John, George, Linda, Jimi Hendrix, the Russian Military Defense Secretary ("I learn English from Beatles songs! Hello! Goodbye!"). Several times McCartney started singing randomly to himself or dancing a little joyous jig. McCartney is, we have to remember, a 68-year-old man, who might mumble to himself from time to time.

When the jumbotron cameras pointed towards the crowd we were entertained by some of the signs, which McCartney said he had to keep from distracting him from his lyric and chord memorization. One he read out loud in a silly American accent, "I saw you at the Cow Palace in '64, remember me?"

Twice during the night the audience was treated to some post-fourth-of-July pyrotechnics. Once, if you noticed it, was over in the East Bay in the Alameda area and once was the awesome light show during "Live and Let Die." So instead of a horn or string section, we got fireworks.

An especially moving moment was McCartney's tribute to John Lennon in a new (??? - Not new) song called "Here Today" enacting a conversation the two never had in life.

The screen behind the stage was full of goodies from clips from Rock Band and the film Hard Day's Night to a very amusing video of the Wing's Band on the Run cover photoshoot. There was also the puzzling Barack Obama screen saver. What WAS that? It was a little creepy.

The show was of course polished, but present of charming live moments including two restarts when instruments weren't cooperating. "We could just use the tape, like so many other life artists do.

McCartney's band was all-star, but it was drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. stole the show with his theatrics, dancing, back-up singing and "attempt" to copy Ringo's drum solo in "The End."   "

Concur My Stonesian Brother .

" Letting Go " is one of my all-time favorite Wings songs . That 1976 Wings Band friggin ROCKED but I really REALLY do believe that this current band is Macca's BEST EVER !!!!!

Every band ( ....including the Beatles ) eventually collapses under the enormous weight of Sir Paul McCartney's talent   -- hopefully this band will NEVER break apart .

Paul McCartney blows
San Francisco away

"This is such a scene I'm just going to take a moment for myself to just take it all in," Paul McCartney said, addressing an audience that had spent the previous hour or so cramming itself into every possible corner of AT&T Park. So a mere two songs into his set on Saturday everything stopped while the 68-year-old pop titan stood at the edge of the stage, mugging as much for the sea of raised cameras at his feet as for his own enjoyment.

The last time McCartney played in San Francisco was when The Beatles performed their final public concert at Candlestick Park in 1966. He returned on Saturday virtually unchanged - the same shaggy hair, titanium smile and desperate need to please. He was even wearing the same boots. "The only thing then is we couldn't hear a thing we were singing," he said, inspiring a fresh chorus of screams, only probably more ragged and breathless this time around.

You hear about all these things, but until you actually sit just a few yards away and witness McCartney in action for close to three hours, it's impossible to understand how they all conspire to make Sir Paul such an absolute whirlwind.

"It's character-building, this weather," he said, stripping off his suit jacket with a nod.

Tearing through five decades of rock history with a backing band that didn't miss a note, he kept bouncing and bantering throughout the night, even as large swathes of his fans fell back on their chairs in exhaustion. He even held onto "Helter Skelter" for the second encore, giving the song every bit of frenzy it required after having already delivered a powerhouse run through "Day Tripper," "Lady Madonna" and "Get Back."

What was really amazing was taking in the full scope of songs that have come out of this man: "Two of Us." "Eleanor Rigby." "Paperback Writer." "Yesterday." "Hey Jude." The audience may have heard it all before, but the thrill of hearing it again was undiminished. It was hard to believe that pop music was ever so good, that life was so good.

Unlike the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, who constantly destroy and rebuild their classics in ways that make the dogs in Potrero Hill want to put their paws over their ears, McCartney meticulously preserves his songs, delivering them precisely the way they sounded on the day they were etched in vinyl - integrity and soul intact.

Of course, it would be easy to nitpick with the set list. With his catalog, why bother with two songs from the little-heard album he released in 2008 under the name the Fireman? And why so much filler (!!!) by Wings? The thing is, the band made even those songs sound endearing.

McCartney has been playing roughly the same set for more than a decade but still managed to draw resonance in the most unexpected places: An acoustic take on "Blackbird" that made a stadium filled with 40,000 people feel like a living room; the heart-stopping pyrotechnics display that ignited "Live and Let Die"; and the quick run through "San Francisco Bay Blues," which saw him veering off the rigid set list. "We had to throw that one in," he shrugged.

There were also reminders of the loss he has endured over the years. There was "Here Today," a song he wrote after John Lennon's death as a peace offering to his former band mate. He brought out a ukulele George Harrison had given him for a moving version of "Something." And for Linda McCartney - whose absence still looms large over the stage after all these years - he reserved the elegiac Wings ballad "My Love."

But through his sadness he offered solace. And to the people singing along, fighting back the tears and raising their thumbs in solidarity, McCartney is not merely a survivor: He is an enduring force of nature. "

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled today that a government policy that can lead to fining broadcasters for airing a single curse word on live television is “unconstitutionally vague” and potentially a violation of the 1st Amendment.

This all came to light back in 2003 when Bono exclaimed during a live awards show that U2 winning a Golden Globe was “really f-ing brilliant.”

Of course, Janet Jackson’s exposed breast during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2006 didn’t help matters. Following that incident, Congress voted to increase the maximum fine for each violation to $325,000.

Today’s ruling will help prevent crippling fines for slips that censors aren’t quick enough to catch, and provide a little breathing room for…em…wardrobe malfunctions.

MORE VAN HALEN RUMORS - 2011 TOUR!:
Nothing going on in the world of Van Halen? Not on the surface maybe, but this from a brand new interview with Triumph frontman Rik Emmett:
"We're scheduled to go for a dinner tonight with a couple of guys from Live Nation that have flown into town and want to take us to dinner. I'm sure there's going to be some sort of a pitch. The rumours that have been sort of blowing in the wind are that Van Halen want to go back out yet again next year, but they're going to need some sort of support to make the packaging a little more interesting. Because Triumph hasn't really ever toured in any kind of a nostalgia way, I think Live Nation kind of goes, "Oh, yeah, you guys would be perfect for that." So, we'll see sort of the size and the shape and the glitter of the golden carrots that they have."
Full interview at: www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/Rik-Emmett-713.

And this comment from a source that contacted me over the weekend who had the chance to hear some new Van Halen material recently: I heard pieces...one has one of the best guitar riffs I have heard Eddie lay down in a long time, it made the hair on my arms tingle. DLR sounded great as well."
