" John Lennon was producing Harry Nilsson's album Pussy Cats in Los Angeles (1974). Paul McCartney visited John Lennon and joined in a jam session with John for the first time in the studio since the split of The Beatles. At John's Santa Monica beach house, the two Beatles were relaxing with Keith Moon & May Pang by the swimmimg pool when this picture was taken. It is the last ever photograph of Lennon and McCartney together.  "

Beatlemania in Battersea as Kevin Spacey sings with his idol Paul McCartney

Kevin Spacey proved that even the biggest Hollywood star has his own idol, as he jumped at the chance to jam with Sir Paul McCartney.

The actor and Old Vic boss got the chance of a lifetime at a party for 500 at Battersea Power Station, which raised almost £700,000 ($1 million) for the theatre.

The former Beatle agreed to perform after four years of being wooed by Spacey. Finding himself stage-side, the actor politely asked the band's bouncers whether he could join Sir Paul - then ran past to start singing before they had a chance to say no.

The pair gave a rendition of Hey Jude - dedicated to Dame Judi Dench, who was in the audience - and broke into what appeared to be a Morecambe and Wise-style dance. "That might be my only chance to sing with Paul McCartney," said Spacey.

The musician declined to comment on Spacey's pop potential but said: "He rocked his socks off - it was fantastic. We loved having him up on stage."

Guests paid £500 ($760) a head, with £10,000 ($15,200) premium tables hosted by the likes of restaurateur Richard Caring and chairman of the Evening Standard Evgeny Lebedev. Party-goers included Joely Richardson, James Corden, Jeremy Irons, Sir Patrick Stewart, Neil Pearson, Stephen Daldry and Sir Peter Hall. Boris Becker and Bernie Ecclestone were also there.

Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic, and Sally Greene, the chief executive, co-hosted. Stephen Fry, master of ceremonies, insisted the arts in Britain "were never going to be replaced by more efficient arts from Japan or South Korea". The Waterloo venue hopes to hold a similar high-profile bash every year. Spacey acknowledged some had pondered his motives when he came to London. "I hope that as we're about to open our seventh season of work in September some of these questions have been answered," he said.

The theatre persuaded artists including Sir Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Jake Chapman and Banksy to put works up for auction. Chapman gave a £40,000 ($60,805) sculpture in exchange for Spacey voicing a cockroach in his first animated film. Banksy gave a painting that sold for £85,000 ($129,212).

Private equity boss Sir Ronald Cohen, who paid £50,000 ($76,000) for an Emin, said: "The Old Vic is a fantastic role model and deserves to be supported."

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Culture Minister Ed Vaizey spoke to thank the philanthropists and sponsors, led by hotel business W Doha.  "

What does Van Halen mean to you? Your uncle’s favorite band certainly can’t be identified by its singer, which went from the charismatic though mentally challenged David Lee Roth to the tequila pedaling, traffic law breaking bad boy in permed hair, Sammy Hagar, and finally Gary Cherone, who was one of those guys who sang “More Than Words”. They also made it clear their bass player was expendable, when Michael Anthony was kicked to the curb. So, do both Eddie and Alex have to be involved for it to be Van Halen? Surely Eddie at least, Alex always seemed kind of like a coattail rider to me.

Whatever the lineup, a new Van Halen record is a big deal. So news that the new record is almost complete and should be released in the first half of 2011 and that David Lee Roth will indeed be the singer (Bravewords.com), well, that means Van Halen is back to about a million middle-aged dudes. Of course, how long they can keep this group, which includes Van Halen: The New Class member Wolfgang Van Halen (and I don’t care where you are from, that name would kick ass if Van Halen were never even a band) together remains to be seen, but the die-hards would be better suited getting a ticket for the early dates should they decide to tour. Look for a single before the new year.

Sway?!

LOS ANGELES—Yesterday, anyone surfing the web and stopping by Craig’s List’s “musician” section for the Los Angeles area may have come across a post they never would’ve expected.  Apparently, the infamous rock group, Van Halen, had posted a message, stating they were looking for a bassist for their upcoming reunion tour.

The message from the band read:  “Bassist wanted.  Must be able to rehearse five days a week and tour for an extended period of time.  Must be over 21 and must not enjoy Jack Daniels whiskey.  Also, no five-string basses, please.  Call either Eddie or Alex at ***-**** or Diamond Dave at ***-****.”

During their last reunion tour, with David Lee Roth back as frontman after an over twenty year absence, Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang, played bass, replacing original bassist, Michael Anthony.  Apparently, the Van Halens and Anthony had squabbled over money and Anthony was asked to leave the band for good.  Being a family man to the bitter end, Eddie then asked his sixteen-year old son to join the group.  The tour was a success, though some fans did miss Anthony’s presence.

“It was a good show and all,” said longtime fan, James Franklin, 39.  “But it was weird to not see that Jack Daniels bass Michael Anthony used to play.  I mean, all he ever did was play quarter notes and eighth notes, which basically a chimp could do if you showed him how.  Still, he sang great harmonies and he was there since the beginning.  They should’ve done what they could to keep him.”

Now, according to the band’s manager, William Weinstein, Wolfgang Van Halen has also been asked to leave the band, due to the fact that he also asked for more money from the Van Halen brothers.

“What these bassists don’t understand is that this is Eddie and Alex’s band,” said Weinstein.  “These guys should feel lucky they’re playing to thousands of people every night.  Actually, Wolfgang wasn’t even getting paid on the last tour.  The spot in the band was Eddie’s early graduation gift for him, for when he graduated high school.  Now he’s asking for money?  Well, that’s not really how it works.”

Weinstein also went on to say that the band only received twelve email responses to their Craig’s List ad, which they found disappointing, but they still plan on taking each one very seriously.  Auditions begin as early as next week and the Van Halen brothers, as well as David Lee Roth, will be in attendance to make the final decision.

“Technically, Dave doesn’t really have to be there.  And, truth be told, the decision will up to Eddie and Alex because it’s their name that’s on the line.  Without them, there is no Van Halen.  Still, Dave’s been a good sport about the whole thing and he just wants to get back on stage to do what he does best, so he’s willing to do anything to get the ball rolling.”

The message on Craig’s List has still yet to be deleted, so anyone interested can still find it under yesterday’s posting.  But Weinsteiin does warn future prospects to understand, this may only be a temporary gig.  It all depend on how the members of the group gel together.

“Or, in layman’s term, it depends on whether or not Eddie or Alex are ‘on the rag,’ which is pretty much all the time.”

The Commercial Court has refused to admit an action being taken by U2 guitarist Adam Clayton against his bank and his accountants to its list.

Mr Clayton is suing Bank of Ireland Private Banking Ltd and chartered accounting firm, Gaby Smyth, over claims that his former personal assistant Carol Hawkins misappropriated more than €4m from his bank accounts over five years to November 2009.

He claims the bank and the accountants failed to detect the alleged extent of the fraud.

His application to have the action admitted to the Commercial Court, which fast tracks commercial cases, was opposed by the bank.

Senior Counsel, Michael McDowell, said Mr Clayton had not noticed €4.8m disappearing from his accounts for four years but seemed to think the bank should have noticed.

Mr Clayton is also taking separate legal proceedings against Ms Hawkins. The court heard an investigation is also being carried out by the garda fraud squad.

Mr Justice Peter Kelly said it would not be justified to make the Commercial Court's fast-track system available as the bank and the accountants would be under pressure to prepare the case speedily when the action against Ms Hawkins would not be moving so quickly.

He said it would be difficult for the defendants to get the necessary evidence while a garda investigation was under way.

" July 7, 2010 -- Liverpool Echo

Long and Winding Forthlin Road - home of Beatles legend Paul McCartney

The scene is Forthlin Road, Allerton, on a beautiful night. A man turns up with his son and knocks on the door of number 20. The man inside answers: "Yeah can I help yer?"

The visitor says "yeah" back, adding: "I used to live here."

The resident says: "I'm watching the telly."

And closes the door.

It's a great tale.

It's a Beatle tale.

Sir Paul McCartney often comes 'home' and isn't it ironic someone wouldn't 'let him in'.

He's proud of the place where he moved with mum Mary, Dad Jim and brother Mike in 1955, and where he wrote so many great songs with John Lennon.

Paul's proud that the National Trust made a controversial decision to make a Beatle home a 'must see' place back in 1996.

It's now a National Treasure, like him.

The fabulous pictures by younger brother Mike (born Peter and a fellow student at Liverpool Institute with George Harrison) are on the walls and show the house as it was in the late 50s and 60s.

Home has always been where the heart is for the McCartney clan.

To walk around the household like Lennon's Mendips it's all so surreal.

Wind our tape forward

A woman who makes models of houses takes her sketch pad to Forthlin Road

From her drawing she makes a painstaking scaled-down replica of the house.

Mabel Summers of Huyton recreated the number 20 homestead correct in every detail and Mike McCartney gave it the thumbs up when he saw it.

Mabel was so chuffed that she sent a photo of it to Paul just to let him know she'd done it.

Well, would you believe it . . . a few weeks later an envelope arrived at her Knotty Ash house a signed pic from Paul saying "From Mac to Mabel Nice One."

When you leave Forthlin Road you will see a bus go on its way into town the 86 collects at a bus stop around the corner from Paul's old house.

At one concert in London's Docklands I saw him standing there our Paul.

Arms aloft, before his encore, the Scruff from Speke said in a familiar soft Scouse accent: "Got to go, like, we're getting the 86 bus home."

The Beatles left Liverpool they had little choice.

But Liverpool never, ever left The Beatles "

1989 the number another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hittin' your heart cause I know you got sould
(Brothers and sisters hey)
Listen if you're missin' y'all
Swingin' while I'm singin'
Givin' whatcha gettin'
Knowin' what I know
While the Black bands sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes rollin'
Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Chorus

As the rhythm designed to bounce
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind
Now that you've realized the prides arrived
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough
from the heart
It's a start, a work of art
To revolutionize make a change nothin's strange
People, people we are the same
No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless
You say what is this?
My beloved lets get down to business
Mental self defensive fitness
(Yo) bum rush the show
You gotta go for what you know
Make everybody see, in order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say...
Fight the Power

Chorus

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant ---- to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother---- him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for 400 years if you check
Don't worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c'mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be

(Fight the Power)

Paul McCartney sings "Birthday" to Ringo Starr in NYC

CLICK TO WATCH VIDEO

Surprise "All Starr " Paul McCartney took center stage Wednesday evening at Radio City Music Hall to sing The Beatles' "Birthday" to his former bandmate Ringo Starr who turned 70 July 7th.

Ringo and his All Starr Band, who are currently on tour, were performing a concert at Radio City Music Hall when Paul walked out unexpectly to serenade Starr.

Ringo played drums as Paul belted out the vocals donning his signature Hofner bass. The crowd went wild.

At the end of the song Paul wished Ringo a happy birthday and said "I love you," They both hugged and kissed each other. Yoko Ono (who sang onstage earlier with Ringo during "Give Peace A Chance") was given a hug from Paul and Ringo as they left the stage.

In the house:
Barbara Bach, Ringo's grandchildren, Zach Starkey, Olivia Harrison, Joe Walsh, Gary Brooker, Mick Jones, Richard Marx, Billy Squier, Gary Burr, Peter Asher, Greg Lake, Max Weinberg, Brian Johnson, Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Jim Keltner, Mark Rivera, Jeff Lynne, Colin Hay, Spike Lee, Sid Bernstein

Earlier in the day Ringo and wife Barbara Bach greeted hundreds of fans at Times Square where Ringo declared "Peace & Love" to the world promptly at 12 noon as his birthday gift. "

Eddie Van Halen's wife and spokesperson Janie Van Halen has denied reports that that the band is putting the finishing touches on a new studio album. Speaking exclusively to RollingStone.com, she said, "What is going around is exactly that, rumors. I don't have any updates at this time."

A "source" told the MelodicRock.com web site late last month that a new Van Halen single is due at the end of the year. The report also claimed that the new album, the band's first with singer Dave Lee Roth since "1984," was nearly halfway complete and that it would be released in the first half of 2011.

MelodicRock.com added that "the relationship between Eddie and Dave remains as complex as ever, but there is a definite desire to get a new record completed."

Van Halen reunited with Roth in 2007 for a year-long world tour that grossed more than $90 million.

In addition to Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen, the current lineup features drummer Alex Van Halen and Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass.

Eddie Van Halen revealed to RollingStone.com last year that he had to undergo surgery for a cyst, bone spur and twisted tendon in his left hand, although he expected to make a full recovery.

Carlos Santana will reportedly cover the VAN HALEN classic "Dance The Night Away" on his upcoming collection of classic rock covers, which will feature guest vocals from Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, Chris Daughtry and others. There's no word yet on who will sing the Van Halen song.

" The Jew  "

" Scattered by God's avenging hand, afflicted and forlorn,
Sad wanderers from their pleasant Land, do Judah's children mourn;
and e'en in Christian countries, few breathe thoughts of pity for the Jew.

Yet listen, Gentile, do you love the Bible's precious page?
Then let your heart with kindness move to Israel's heritage;
who traced those lines of love for you?
Each sacred writer was a Jew.
And then as years and ages passed, and Nations rose and fell,
though clouds and darkness oft were cast o'er captive Israel
the oracles of God for you were kept in safety by the Jew.
And when the great Redeemer came for guilty man to bleed.
He did not take an angel's name, no, born of Abraham's seed,
Jesus, who gave His life for you -
the gentle Saviour - was a Jew.
And though His own received Him not, and turned in pride away,
whence is the Gentile's happier lot? Are you more just than they?
No! God in pity turned to you - have you no pity for the Jew?
Go then, and bend you knee to pray for Israel's ancient race;
ask the dear Saviour every day to call them by His grace.
Go, for a debt of love is due
from Christian Gentiles to the Jew.  "

Those donations will fund the Buhera Integrated Community Water and Sanitation Project. It will benefit 2,200 people in a region of Zimbabwe that has been greatly impacted by a cholera epidemic.

The African Well Fund is asking fans to support them in the Chase Community Giving challenge on Facebook. They are in the running for a $20,000 donation, but they need your support. If you have a Facebook account, please log in and vote for the African Well Fund by July 12. To place a vote, or learn more about the contest, visit their Facebook page.

Are they building a well to stuff Bono in it?

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

McCartney in Utah: Favorite songs from Sir Paul

Former Beatle and Wings frontman Paul McCartney will perform for the first time in Utah on Tuesday, July 13.

The 68-year-old native of Liverpool is the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music. According to Guinness World Records, he wrote or co-wrote 188 charted records, of which 91 reached the Top 10 and 33 made it to No. 1.

Virtually everyone has a favorite McCartney song, written either when he was a member of the Fab Four or during his prolific career as a solo artist and with Wings.

My favorites from Sir Paul's collection? "Paperback Writer," "Eleanor Rigby" and "I've Just Seen a Face."

In interviews conducted over the past few months, The Tribune asked musicians and entertainers from all over the world to name their favorites. Here's what they said:

Folk legend Joan Baez » "Let It Be"

Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff » "Yesterday" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"

Yesod Williams of Pepper » "Live and Let Die."

on Olazabal of Dirty Heads: » "I've Got a Feeling"

Joey Signa of Paper Tongues » "Let It Be"

Comedian Paula Poundstone » "Hey Jude"

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile » "Let It Be

Pop singer David Osmond » "Blackbird" and "Yesterday"

Classical violinist Jenny Oaks Baker » "Yesterday" and "Hello Goodbye"

Country singer Lee Ann Womack » "Helter Skelter"

Jared Watson of Dirty Heads » "Get Back"

Tom Gabel of Against Me! » "Blackbird" ("I play it for my daughter. She's 71/2 months.")

Rusty Anderson of Paul McCartney Band » "Helter Skelter," "Let It Be" and "Maybe I'm Amazed"

Singer-songwriter Katie Herzig » "Eleanor Rigby"

Deondra Brown of The 5 Browns » "Yesterday" and "Penny Lane"

Lily Tomlin » "Yesterday" ("It's so interesting to see the progression of their music, and their consciousness.")

John Campbell of Lamb of God » "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?"

Bryan Simpson of Cadillac Sky » "Blackbird"

Dance-music artist Girl Talk » "Temporary Secretary"

Blues guitarist JJ Grey » "We Can Work It Out"

SA Martinez of 311 » "Yesterday" and "Blackbird" ("What a genius, what a craftsman. How lucky we are to have these songs."

Country singer Heidi Newfield » "Hey Jude" and "Live and Let Die"

' joey  ..... why are the beatles so special to jb ?  ...... i mean  , what did their arrival mean for the usa ?  '

************ SIGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! **************

" July 9, 2010 -- Deseret News

Paul McCartney's music has inspired generations

James Paul McCartney - that's Sir Paul McCartney to all of us - will play Utah for the first time on July 13.
He won't be playing alone.

Sure, he'll have his band, including longtime guitarist Rusty Anderson. But he'll bring so much more, including every audience member's memories.

When McCartney was introduced to John Lennon in 1957, the two had little idea what impact they would have on pop culture in 20th and 21st centuries.

Americans, arguably, felt the impact in the keenest sense.

When The Beatles landed at New York's newly christened John F. Kennedy Airport on Feb. 7, 1964, the country was still reeling from the assassination of the airport's namesake.

America was looking for something happy, uplifting and inspiring.

Much to the older generation's chagrin, The Beatles filled that void for their children.

And, as they say, the rest is history.

Jeff Whiteley, director of the locally based Excellence in the Community Concert Series, blamed the Beatles for his career choice.

"My mother dropped me off at the Gem Theatre when I was in elementary school to see 'A Hard Day's Night,'?"

Whiteley said. "The kids were screaming in the theater just like the people on the screen. Every seat was taken. It was pandemonium and a formidable experience."

Whiteley became a bassist in junior high and took an interest in McCartney's playing.

"When we'd learn all these rock songs from different groups, we had to slow down to learn a Beatles song because the composition was more sophisticated," he said. "Instead of just chord charts and everyone banging away on the same chords, the Beatles songs were more composed and more akin to ensemble playing."

Speaking of composers, Kurt Bestor had the opportunity to arrange classic Beatles songs for a couple of projects.

One was an arrangement for Brigham Young University's World Championship Formation Team 10 years ago.

"That was a lot of fun," he told the Deseret News. "We used 'Yesterday,' 'Eleanor Rigby' and some other hits."

The other, Bestor said, was an elevator music arrangement.

"I do have an apology for Sir McCartney," he said. "I was hired by the Muzak Corporation to arrange 'Norwegian Wood.' I should hold up a sign at his concert that says, 'I'm sorry'?"

Bestor confessed he was a late bloomer when it came to appreciating the Beatles and McCartney.

"The Beatles did inspire me, but I was not really into rock music growing up," Bestor said. "It was either classical or funk."

Bestor appreciates the Beatles' experimental era.

"When they started coming out with more adventurous things, like 'Sgt. Pepper,' I started thinking how interesting these guys were becoming.

"When I listened to the 'Liverpool Oratorio,' (McCartney's) first classical foray, there were some things that seemed a little goofy for classical music. But his melodies and his understanding of music goes very very deep."

Sue Kelley, program director for KRSP 103.5 FM (aka "The Arrow"), said she's "such a Beatles fanatic, it's disgusting,"

"Paul, for me, is such an iconic figure," Kelley said. "He's a poet, a writer and humanitarian. But I loved the fact that he and (his late wife) Linda had such an incredible love affair.

"He wrote more than 101 love songs just for Linda. And the only time they spent apart was the 10 days he was in jail in Japan when he got busted for pot.

"There's something in the songs he wrote that speaks to everybody," she said.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" is Kelley's favorite solo McCartney song.

"Every time I hear the opening notes of the live version, my gut constricts and I stop," she said. "Even after working in rock music for 22 years, that song still brings tears to my eyes."

Derryl Yeager, artistic director for the award-winning Odyssey Dance Theatre, choreographed a repertory piece called "Let It Be," set to various Beatles songs, in 2002.

"Paul's music with the Beatles has inspired a whole generation, and I am particularly impressed at the rediscovery of the Beatles year after year with young and old alike," Yeager wrote in an e-mail to the Deseret News.

"It speaks not only to the amazing music they created, but also to the incredible lack of talent exhibited by most pop stars today."

Yeager also admired the fact that the Beatles put their music first.

"They mastered their craft and broke new ground as they tried to overcome their own hype and concentrated on their music," Yeager said. "Most so-called artists today seek fame and fortune alone, without having anything to say. The Beatles' example as artists is certainly something to emulate, and it is a major reason their music still holds up and inspires today!"
