The new edition of Rolling Stone (dated June 30) includes a short article previewing the now-postponed North American U2 360 tour. The article says this about U2's current album situation:

Since wrapping up the 2009 leg in October, the band has been in the studio working on three albums simultaneously: Songs of Ascent, a second volume from the sessions for last year's No Line On The Horizon; the score from the Broadway musical Spiderman; and a set of entirely new songs.

This is not the first time that there's been talk of three album projects, but in the previous reports, the third project was said to be old material from the Rick Rubin sessions in 2006. The above specifically refers to "entirely new songs." We've updated our New U2 album page, accordingly.

Now that U2'S North American tour has been postponed because of Bono's back surgery, it's time for all involved to start totting up the cost. "U2's daily tour overhead spend is $750,000," says an Irish music-tour insider. "Bono's back has put them out of action for two months. They're insured for show postponement, but that's not the full story. The set-up costs of the three Claws they use was phenomenal. They don't need this, their insurance company doesn't need this and the global touring economy doesn't need this. It's not just the show day; it's the three of four days before setting up the stadium, one day stripping it down after, the 200 trucks, the drivers, the security, the merchandising people, the drinks and food people, the programme sellers, costume, make-up and hundreds of other people. U2 would have over 100 permanent touring personnel and an extra 200-300 working personnel at each local venue. It's the hotels, the flights, the food vouchers. It's like a small country coming to a standstill."

Arthur Fogel, chief executive of U2's concert promoter, Live Nation, says of the 3600 tour postponement: "There's no question this is monumental."

A million tickets had been sold for the band's North American leg, in July and August, now put off to allow Bono to recuperate from his back surgery in Munich last week after injuring himself during rehearsals. The band are looking at 2011 for the rescheduled dates.

Of severe annoyance to the band is the fact that there was also a high-profile Glastonbury Festival appearance (their first) at the end of June -- their spot has now been taken by Gorillaz -- for which the band had written a song.

The European leg of the tour, from August until October, is still officially on, but it will depend on the singer's recuperation. The emergency surgery was needed "to avoid further paralysis", said doctors after Bono developed severe compression of the sciatic nerve, along with a ligament tear and a herniated disc.

"He won't want reminding that he just turned 50 last month," says a source. "He has been throwing himself around stages for over 30 years. He's up there as the frontman for two and a half hours a night, and he's not one to do things by half measures. This is a very serious injury and sounds like it could be the result of cumulative damage. How things play out will be interesting. This is showbiz -- hundreds of millions of dollars rest upon a 50-year-old man's back disc."

All focus now will be on whether the singer is fit for the European tour. (There are no Irish shows this time around.) Bono may not climb up speaker stacks any more (something that always concerned other band members), but he still flings himself around a fair bit. As the focal point for 80,000 people each night, a certain degree of showmanship is required. People close to him say there is no way he will appear on stage without being able to give it "the full-on Bono treatment."

The band train hard before going the road, but in the months off between legs of the tour they can let themselves go a bit. This back injury was caused by Bono trying to get himself into shape for two months of touring after several months off.

What is particularly frustrating for the band is that this tour is perhaps their most significant ever. They've never spent as much money assembling a stage configuration as they have on the Claw, and they were prepared to go substantially into the red on the tour before seeing any profit.

With their latest album not selling as well as it could have, the tour has exceeded expectations. It was the most profitable tour of last year, but in this, its second year, it was supposed to resolve a long dispute over who is the most popular live rock band of all time.

U2's Vertigo tour (2005-2006) sits in second place as the highest-grossing music tour. Just ahead of it lies The Rolling Stones' Bigger Bang tour (2005-2007), which grossed $558 million. The Stones, though, played a lot more dates than U2. So far, the 3600 tour has grossed $311 million. Without Bono's back injury it would have easily grabbed the prize.

Guinness World Records (and bragging rights) will have to wait. But for the still intensely competitive Bono, having U2 make another piece of music history will be motivation enough to accelerate the recuperation process. For a few months, though, there is a line on U2's horizon.

Right-wingers are seriously up-in-arms about the fact that a Beatle -- a pot-smoking vegan hippie '60s musician -- made light fun of the Republican former president. Contributors to and readers of National Review's The Corner and House Minority Leader John Boehner are upset that Paul McCartney made a tacky Bush-is-dumb joke. It is the year 2010, and the Republican Party is outraged that a hippie made fun of a square.

This is what happened: Paul McCartney won an award from the Library of Congress, because even though he had probably the third-best solo career as a Beatle, Ringo is not yet properly recognized for his songwriting prowess and the other two are dead. Sir Paul played a concert for President and Mrs. Obama.

At the end of the concert, Paul McCartney made a joke. He said: "After the last eight years, it’s good to have a president that knows what a library is."

This made The Corner's Jay Nordlinger mad. He wrote a blog post headlined "Sir Jerk?" (Hey Paul, the Most Excellent Order of the Jerk Empire called....) Jay is just so mad that people say mean things about the good president, the one he liked. He is sick of name-calling and disrespect! (He does not, I take it, read The Corner regularly.)

Can anyone tell me why people are such schmucks? Why they are so graceless and clueless and nasty? I mean, Paul McCartney’s like the richest, most popular, most honored musician in the world. Does he not have it in him to behave like a gentleman — or at least a non-boor — while he’s being celebrated at the White House? Does he have to be the Wanda Sykes of popular music? Is it not possible to love Obama, as McCartney does, without hating Bush — or at least insulting him on a high, non-political occasion?

I don’t care that “Penny Lane” is a pretty tune, Paul McCartney is a horse’s butt. Let me amend that: He acted like one, on Wednesday night.

U2's decision to release U2 360 at the Rose Bowl this week was, no doubt, intended to help promote the summer tour of North America that was due to begin Thursday ... the same day the DVD will hit store shelves here. But with Bono's unexpected back surgery forcing a postponement of the entire North American tour (until some time in 2011), the DVD becomes more of a memento than a promotional release. After watching the Blu-Ray version of the DVD today, I'm happy to report that it's a fine memento of last year's tour, and possibly the best concert DVD U2 has put out.

Most of the press coverage and attention of last year's tour focused on U2's massive "Claw" stage -- a one-of-a-kind structure that let the band play in-the-round in a stadium while serving as the lighting system, video center, and sound rig all at once. And the stage certainly looks beautiful on the DVD, but let's be clear: It's Bono, not the Claw, who steals the show.

Bono shines throughout the concert. His voice sounds better than I remember at the four other U2 360 shows I saw last year; he has a few scratchy moments here and there, but the DVD really confirms that what sounded to some fans like a lack of interest is actually just very delicate, purposeful phrasing in some songs. He's in almost constant motion throughout the show: hopping, whispering, moaning and grunting, playing air guitar, sprinting around the stage, dancing, swinging on the hanging microphone, boxing the closest camera. This is his show and he's in full command of what he wants the audience to experience.

The stage, in fact, almost seems de-emphasized through the first half of the DVD. There are glimpses during some of the early songs, but I found myself thinking, "Show the stage. Now!" Instead, the focus stays on the band and the songs in the beginning of the show, and then the band and stage share our attention in the latter half.

The versions of "Beautiful Day" and "Until the End of the World" are terrific, and "Where the Streets Have No Name" is shot and edited with all the majesty it deserves, especially the transition from "Amazing Grace," which may remind you of the performance of "Streets" from the Slane Castle video shot back in 2001. For me, other chill-inducing moments included a shot at the end of "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," "MLK," and the ending of "Moment of Surrender."

Fans will be glad to know that there are only two to three songs with the overly fast-paced, abrupt edits that have plagued some of U2's previous video releases. The vast majority of song edits have a quick pace, but not to the point of distraction. If you saw U2 3D, this DVD will look and feel familiar; Tom Krueger handled cinematography on U2 3D and directs this U2 360 release.

More good news: As far as I can tell, all of Bono's snippets are included in the DVD; there are no awkward edits that disrupt the flow of the show. In fact, that extends beyond just snippets: They left in the funny/cute chat that Bono and Edge have early in the show about Robert Hilburn, the former Los Angeles Times pop critic who was in the audience. They also left in Bono's mention of YouTube. Scenes like those always seemed to end up on the cutting room floor on past video releases. (Think of Bono's NBA reference during the Elevation Live from Boston video.)

Of course, when it comes to editing the show, there's an elephant in the room that has to be addressed: "Breathe," the opening song of the concert, was edited out and placed in the Bonus Material section. I was as dumbfounded and disappointed as anyone when that news first came out a few months ago, but after watching "Breathe" today (after I watched the full concert), I'm actually glad they removed it. The camera work and editing aren't up the standard of the rest of the show and, to be frank, U2's performance of that song also seems lackluster in comparison. I still long for U2 to release a full, unedited concert ... but I think I understand why they didn't this time.

As much as I love this DVD, it's not perfect. There's a noticeable edit in "Mysterious Ways" where the audio and video don't match; Bono is singing, yet, on screen, the mic is not near his mouth. I also think some opportunities were missed to bring up the crowd volume, especially during the sing-a-long portions of "Unknown Caller." But those are minor quibbles to be sure. Slightly more than "minor" is this complaint: Aside from the new documentary, Squaring the Circle, the bonus material is pretty lame. The "BD Live" section has downloadable tour clips, but the same clips also seem to be available in the Bonus Material section; it also has tour photos that many fans will have already seen on Edge's Twitter account. The promise of new BD Live tour content this summer is now a moot point because of the postponement. Much of the other bonus material is stuff many fans will have already seen on U2.com or elsewhere online.

That said, Squaring the Circle is quite good. The documentary contains new video interviews with all four band members that appear to have been recorded within the last couple months -- after the tour ended. It has considerable contributions from Mark Fisher and Willie Williams, both of whom show photos and videos of the stage development that I'd never seen before. And there are a couple clips from a private meeting that included the whole band, plus Paul McGuinness, Fisher, Williams, Gavin Friday, Catherine Owens, and a few others -- a meeting that seems to be when Williams and Fisher first showed the band photos of the stage being built in Belgium. Oh, to have access to the raw footage of that meeting!

I should've mentioned this earlier: I've never heard a better-sounding U2 video. I'm no audiophile and couldn't explain why it sounds so good, but wow. We don't even own a tricked-out sound system or anything, but the audio quality was just stunning. The Blu-Ray video also looks terrific, but unlike some other Blu-Ray discs, it's not too perfect. The concert still maintains an almost gritty, live feel throughout.

If you loved the U2 360 tour, you'll love this video. I don't know if the Rose Bowl was U2's best performance of the tour, but this is one of the best concert videos U2 has released. I suspect that, after I watch it one or two more times this week, I'll want to remove "one of" from that previous sentence.

" Joey, have you booked a room for Wildwood this year ? "

********* SIGH !!!!!!!!!! **********

" June 11, 2010 -- Daily Record (UK)

Sir Paul McCartney: I know it'll be time to quit when I don't get buzz from Hampden roar

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has threatened to quit making pop music if the Hampden roar doesn't give him a thrill on a par with Shea Stadium.

Ahead of The Beatles legend's show at Scotland's national stadium, I joined Paul, his crew and entourage in Mexico City.

Paul, 67, insisted he still gets a thrill from playing to big crowds and is looking forward to the racket of the Glasgow crowd on June 20.

When Paul, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr performed live at the height of Beatlemania, they admitted they couldn't even hear what they were playing.

But despite the din of stadiums such as Shea in New York, Paul told why the Hampden roar will still impress.

He said: "I never get over that. I hope to never get over that because then you are jaded and if that happens then I'll give up. If I ever get to the stage of thinking, they're roaring - so what, I don't think I'll bother. But I don't. It's just the opposite. I can't believe it.

"Often I will watch other people's concerts and I think, look at their audience going crazy and that I wish our audience did that.

"Then I watched our tour film and they were doing that. Why don't I notice that? It is because I am performing and I can't look objectively at what is going on but when I do see a crowd going crazy it takes you back."

After more than 50 years in the business, Paul admits he still has a soft spot for the Scottish fans who took the Beatles to their hearts during a tour of Scotland in May, 1960.

Three years before Beatlemania - a term coined during the minitour of Scotland in 1963 - the Silver Beetles were the support for Johnny Gentle on a tour that took in Alloa Town Hall, Fraserburgh's Dalrymple Hall and Nairn's Regal Ballroom.

"Oh aye," Paul said, trying out an impersonation of what the Scots must have sounded like to him in those early days.

Back then, the band included Edinburgh-born "fifth Beatle" Stuart Sutcliffe, who died of a brain haemorrhage in 1962.

"The first thing we did was a Scottish tour with Johnny Gentle who was a wannabe rock 'n' roll star. We played Fraserburgh. They were very small gigs.

"The girls would ask, 'Whit's your name?' I'd say, 'My name's Paul Ramon.' They'd say, 'Ramon, oh that's great. Would you sign the book?' It was very cute.  "
