Paul McCartney in Puerto Rico
by Sandy Lopez (Macca Reporter)
After "Jet," Paul greeted the crowd at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum with "Buenas noches, boricuas!" (Good evening, Puerto Ricans!)
After "All My Loving," he said, "Oh yeah, vamos a pasarlo bien!" ( we're gonna have a good time tonight!)
After "Letting Go" he said, "Thank you very much everybody, for that great welcome - for us it's the first time to be here and it won't be the last..." (huge cheers from the crowd). "Yeah, like I say, we're gonna have some fun here tonight. We're gonna hava a par-tee! So I'm gonna take a little moment, and take it all in..." He pauses to look at the crowd.
After "Highway" he took off his jacket. "that's the big wardrobe change for the night. You know, they say the the people of Puerto Rico love their music, (loud cheers) and it's TRUE!"
After "The Long And Winding Road," he said, "Thank you, muchas gracias, yeah! As you notice, I'm going to try to speak a little Spanish this evening 'cos I learned a little bit when I was in school, la escuela, en Inglaterra (England), si! No problema, amigo, si! Mind you, what they taught us was crazy - what I learnt when I was in languages, "tres conejos en un arbol, tocando un tambor- que si , que no, que si lo he visto yo!" (Three rabbits in a tree, playing the drums, oh yes, oh no, oh yes I have seen it!) He giggled and continued, "Oh, yeah! En esta gira, es al primera vez que tocamos esta cancion especialmente para Puerto Rico " (on this tour, it's the first time that we play this song specially for P.R.) to loud cheers. Then he began "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five." After the song, Paul proudly snapped his skinny black braces (suspenders) against his chest.....
He introduced "My Love" in a mix of Spanish and English saying, "Escribi la proxima cancion par Linda, pero esta noche es para todos los enamorados. You know who you are! This is for you lovers!"
He told the "Blackbird" history in English, but did not relate the Jimi Hendrix story.
Before "Here Today" he explained, "OK, escribi esta cancion para John, manos arriba para John!" (hands up for John! - actually more like,'Stick 'em up for John!) Which received tremendous cheers. He urged, "so remember, SAY it!" when explaining the imaginary conversation in the lyrics. "That was for John, now then for YOU !'
After "Mrs.Vanderbilt," he told the Kiev story in English, followed by the the challenge of reading signs and called up a girl to get her arm tattooed, asking her' are you sure you want to do this?" YES, chirped the young girl, and happily held out her arm for Paul to sign before whispering something in his ear. He said something back to her before she bounced offstage, thrilled to bits ...
After "Eleanor Rigby," Paul said, "Esta cancion es para George, manos arriba para George!" meaning hands up for George , and explained in English what a good ukulele player he was. The crowd sang along in loud unison to "Something", amazingly together. "This next song we're gonna do, is an old song but until this tour we have we haven't played it so it's obviously the first time in Puerto Rico, but it is the first time for many years that we've played it live, okay? See if you recognize it !" Then he began "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da."
After "Back In The USSR," he teased the audience, asking, "Alright...are you boricuas?" and began a call-and-response chant prompting, "soy un boricua!" (I am Puerto Rican) Crowd- "para que lo sepas!" (so that you know it !) Paul - "soy un boricua!"
Crowd - "para que lo sepas!" which gets chanted a lot at sporting events according to my taxi driver! Then began "I've Got A Feeling" after which he exclaimed, "I've Got A Feeling" in San Juan tonight, hombre!"
Before" Paperback Writer," he said, "You know, we're changing our guitars, and the reason we're changing to this one...this was the original guitar used on the original record, and there's always people in the audience who love guitars you know, and they like looking at the guitars...This is an old Epiphone Casino, right? For those who, anyone who wants to know ..." After finishing "Paperback Writer," he said " We're having some fun here tonight, Puerto Rico! Si, amigo, Puerto Rico. "(then giggling at his own rhyme) "Thank you!"
When he finished "Give Peace a Chance" he said, "Oh yeah, a little peace right now!
"You're a beautiful crowd," he said to the audience after "Yesterday".
Before a blistering "Helter Skelter", Macca asked the audience, "You wanna keep rocking, don't ya? Ah, yeah, I KNEW it-okay, you asked for it !" After which, he thanked the crowd. "OK Puerto Rico, muchas gracias, boricuas! Thank you for this beautiful welcome you've given us to Puerto Rico, thank you !... Yeah, but there does come a time..." He began to pantomime sleeping and eating! "... but before we do, " he continued and proceeded to thank, "the best crew in the world" and also "mi banda magnifica!"
"We had a great night , hope you have too. Most of all, we'd like to thank YOU "
After "The End," he told the audience, "Hey, te quiero Puerto Rico!" (I love you!) Hasta la proxima!" and began to run off the stage, but caught himself in the most adorable way, because he forgot to say it in English. He shrugged and said, "SEE YA NEXT TIME!"
