Paul McCartney backs Israel animal rights group over fur ban

Singer and former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has lent his support to Israeli animal rights activists fighting to pass a bill banning all fur trade in Israel. If the bill passes, Israel will be the first country to ban the export, import and sale of any kind of fur. Last week, the bill was reviewed by the Knesset Education Committee in preparation for a second and third reading.

The activists working on behalf of the bill received support Sunday from Sir Paul, who said on his Web site: "I, along with members of my family, have been long-standing opponents of the commercial fur trade. The reason for this is simple - fur is cruel and unnecessary .... To skin an animal alive - as many are - for a product nobody needs is beyond comprehension."

McCartney is a longtime vegetarian for reasons of conscience and has been active for animal rights for many years.

His statement was prompted by a personal appeal from the Israeli organization Let the Animals Live. McCartney said that if the bill is passed, Israel will set an example for the rest of the world: "By banning such a cruel industry Israel would provide a shining example in care and compassion that others would be sure to follow," wrote McCartney  "

Cops: Man lured by ex, sodomized
Reply #3329 - Mar 17th, 2010 at 10:38am
Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
The 29-year-old man told his former lover that he had romance on his mind Sunday night.

His ex, Renada Williams, 28, told him she did, too, but Philadelphia police said she had on her mind a brutal plan of revenge against him.

With her former lover nude and ready for romance at her place, police said, two thugs, 16 and 20, showed up and brutalized him with a broomstick.

Police said they sodomized the man, then pummeled him with the broomstick. After the ordeal, the two tied up the unidentified victim with electrical cords.

The victim was so roughed up, he told investigators that he passed out and didn't know how long he'd been unconscious, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Police arrested Williams, of Church Street near Penn, Frankford, and the juvenile, 16, of Granite Street near Torresdale Avenue. They were charged with aggravated assault, robbery and related crimes.

The 20-year-old man is a fugitive, and an arrest warrant has been issued for him.

"They beat him good," Vanore said. "It was some sort of scorned relationship act on her behalf. She set him up."

The woman purportedly lured her ex with a phone call, but the unsuspecting man wasn't aware of the pair of males who lurked in a back room, Vanore said.

It "appeared that everything was going the right way for him," Vanore said.

Then the two males appeared and began to rough up the man, he said.

At some point, the woman and her alleged accomplices, who were only acquaintances, according to police, left the residence, the victim told detectives.

He was finally able to free himself and got to Aria Health/Frankford campus Monday night, where medical personnel called police.

Initially the victim didn't tell investigators about the sodomy assault, but later revealed the ordeal, police said.

" Sir Paul McCartney's Spicy Refried Bean Tacos with Mexican Corn Bread
Feeds 4-6

Ingredients
Spicy Refried Bean Tacos
230g canned refried beans
2 medium tomatoes, chopped small
1 tbs olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1-2 tsp hot chilli sauce or to taste
4 taco shells, warmed as per
instructions on pack
Grated cheddar cheese (optional)

For garnish
Sliced avocado
Sour cream optional
Shredded lettuce
Squeeze of lime or lemon juice

Mexican Corn Bread
1 free-range egg
2 tbsp olive oil
1-2 tbsp chopped fresh hot chilli pepper
230g tin sweet corn, drained, or 2-3 fresh ears of corn, kernels cut off
110g crème fraiche or sour cream
230g yellow cornmeal
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking powder
460g grated cheese

Method
Spicy Refried Bean Tacos
Crisp taco shells are filled with a spicy tomato and bean mixture, shredded lettuce, and grated cheese, and topped with sliced avocado and sour cream. (Vegans can omit the cheese and sour cream).

In a large frying pan gently fry the onions in 2 tbsp olive oil for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the refried beans. Add the chopped tomato. Fry till heated through. Season to taste with chilli sauce and a little salt if desired. Half-fill the warm taco shells with the mixture and top with shredded cheese and shredded lettuce (you can put the lettuce at the bottom of the shell if you prefer). Garnish with a slice or two of avocado and a dollop of sour cream.

Mexican Corn Bread
Spicy and deliciously cheesy! Serve it warm from the oven, or reheat slices in the microwave for 30 seconds (this will retain its tender crumb and moistness).

Beat the egg with the oil until blended. Add the chilli pepper. Stir in the corn, crème fraiche, cornmeal, salt, baking powder, and all but 110g of the cheese. Pour into a 20cm square pan. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Bake in a preheated 180°C oven for 40 minutes. Let cool slightly in the pan, than un-mould and serve warm.

Stripping Corn Kernels off the Cob
Remove the outer leaves or husks and all silk from the corn.

Holding the corn cob upright with the flat end firmly on a board, run a sharp knife down the length between the kernels and the cob to strip the kernels away.  "

" March 18, 2010 -- This Dish Is Vegetarian Blog

UK catering magazine features vegetarian advocate Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney appears on this month's cover of UK catering magazine Stir It Up. Inside the magazine McCartney discusses the Meat Free Monday campaign and shares a favorite recipe, Spicy Refried Bean Tacos with Mexican Corn Bread.

McCartney and his daughters, Stella and Mary, launched the Meat Free Monday campaign in 2009 to raise awareness of the environmental impact of meat production and consumption. Through the campaign, which has attracted more than 14,000 supporters, the McCartney's urge everyone to participate in at least one meatless day per week.

"Climate change is a really important issue and we all have to do our bit," McCartney explains. "Meat production contributes more to global climate change than transport. So changing the way we eat is a good place to start."

The former Beatles member hopes to see real change in 2010 with menus across the world in schools, universities, workplaces, and restaurants reflecting the public's growing interest in climate-friendly eating. Additionally McCartney would like the Meat Free Monday logo used as a guide to sustainable choices when dining out and shopping.

"When you are eating out, very often the only vegetarian choices are pasta and salad," says the singer. "It's no wonder some people think vegetarian food is a bit bland. I've been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and I know that there is exciting vegetarian food in every culture. If more people are going to really embrace the idea of regularly choosing vegetarian options, the food on offer has to reflect this variety."

To read the interview in its entirety and print out the recipe, visit Stir It Up Magazine [pdf].   "

Liam Gallagher has launched a scathing attack on U2, insisting he has never met anyone who likes them. Skip related content

The former Oasis frontman claims that Bono and co have to bribe people to attend their concerts and buy the band's records.

The singer, who is currently readying his first material since the demise of his old band last summer, ranted: "I have never seen a U2 fan, not ever.

"I have never seen anyone with a U2 shirt or been around someone's house that has a f**king U2 record," he claimed.

"I mean, where do their fans f**king come from? Where are they? I reckon they buy them," said Gallagher.

Elsewhere in the interview, he suggested the Irish rockers deploy "a big old shovel" to fill their concerts with fans.
