Irish rockers U2 have delivered a late Christmas present to their loyal fans this weekend by promising to release a new album by June.

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Independent at Leopardstown Races yesterday, U2 frontman Bono revealed the band had been working hard on new material in the run-up to Christmas and are hoping to have a new chart-topping album on shelves before the summer.

Speaking about the upcoming release, Bono described how the band had been putting in the hard work in the studio in recent weeks: "We are working away and we have a couple of yearlings in the stables that could really turn out to be thoroughbreds in the future," he said.

"As a band you are always trying to work on new material and we had some unfinished material from the last album.

"I would love to elaborate a bit more but unfortunately it is a democracy -- and sure isn't that the world that we live in?"

One person who had no problem elaborating, however, was U2 manager Paul McGuinness.

The legendary music mogul described how the world's biggest rock group are confident of having the album released by June.

"I have heard some of the stuff the guys have played and, yeah, it is great. Bono is always an optimist but he seems confident of getting a new record out by the end of the next six months. They're talking about June. By that time we will be ready to go back on tour and I think that will give it a different flavour."

Mr. McGuinness also described how sales of concert tickets "have been incredible" for the band -- despite the current recession.

"Most of the shows left are either sold out or close to being sold out, which is terrific. We're defying gravity at this stage -- it's incredible."

MOSCOW – Russia is considering sending a spacecraft to a large asteroid to knock it off its path and prevent a possible collision with Earth, the head of the country's space agency said Wednesday.

Anatoly Perminov said the space agency will hold a meeting soon to assess a mission to Apophis, telling Golos Rossii radio that it would invite NASA, the European Space Agency, the Chinese space agency and others to join the project once it is finalized.

When the 270-meter (885-foot) asteroid was first discovered in 2004, astronomers estimated the chances of it smashing into Earth in its first flyby in 2029 were as high as 1-in-37, but have since lowered their estimate.

Further studies ruled out the possibility of an impact in 2029, when the asteroid is expected to come no closer than 18,300 miles (29,450 kilometers) above Earth's surface, but they indicated a small possibility of a hit on subsequent encounters.

Some Guy , as you well know , whilst driving from Phoenix to Vegas one has to cross over Hoover Dam ( ...what with the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge a few years away from completion ) .

Anyway , what SHOULD be a four hour trip is actually FIVE FRIGGIN Hours as all the tourists stop to gawk at the Dam / Lake Mead . I gotta be honest my Stonesina Kin ..... Lake Mead was startingly , STARTINGLY low and looked as though it might only be around thirty percent full ( ....the lake is shaped like a martini glass so I am beginning to wonder just what in the Hell Hoover Dam is holding back ) .

" So much for Las Vegas' drinking water , Ronnie ! "

U2's massive 360° Tour wasn't just the biggest trek this year in terms of sheer size: the band's latest jaunt supporting No Line on the Horizon has also been named the year's most successful show by concert tracker Pollstar. Their research also revealed that despite the recession, concert ticket sales for the top 50 tours were up this year across the board compared to 2008's final numbers. That's thanks largely to U2, who easily surpassed all other acts by selling 1.3 million tickets during the first leg of their 360° Tour, grossing $123 million along the way.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band came in second with $94.5 million, ahead of Elton John and Billy Joel ($88 million), the return of Britney Spears ($82.5 million) and AC/DC's Black Ice trek ($77.9 million). Other notables on the Top 50 2009 list include Dave Matthews Band at Eight, Metallica at 10, Coldplay and Paul McCartney at 19 and 20 respectively and Kiss at 27. Reunion tours also found success on the concert circuit as Phish took 21, No Doubt came in at 24 and Blink-182 wound up at 31. Lil Wayne was the lone rapper to place in the Top 50, finishing at 26 on Pollstar's list.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, U2 finished in second place on the decade-end touring list behind the Rolling Stones ($869 million), grossing $844 million from their past 10 years of road trips. Even more impressive, every one of the 244 shows U2 played this decade was a sell-out, a stat no other artist can match.
