RALEIGH -- Debbie Holt was ready to close Cooper's BBQ for the day when she got a call. From U2.

Well, from U2's private jet services coordinator, a man she knows only as Maurice.

Holt, who co-owns the landmark Raleigh barbecue joint with her husband, Randy, was shocked early Saturday evening when she got a call from Maurice, requesting enough food for 25 people: barbecue, pork rinds, five fried chickens, pig skins, ribs, cole slaw, hush puppies.

The band was 30 minutes away from landing at RDU and then dashing to its performance at Carter-Finley Stadium, but could she please have the food ready for them at 10:50 p.m. sharp, just before the band's scheduled departure?

Why, yes, Holt said calmly.

The band had heard all about Cooper's, Maurice said, and they were hoping to get some of what they'd heard was the nation's best barbecue before they left town. Would she take a credit card?

Nope. Cooper's doesn't take credit cards, Holt said. The cost of the order would be $276.77, including a $50 delivery fee.

Maurice said he'd check to see if there was enough cash on the plane and call her back. A few minutes later, he called back, still airborne, and said the food mission was a go. He hung up, and Holt screamed.

"I had to be a grown-up on the phone, but I haven't been grown up since," she said.

Holt and her husband scrambled to cook everything fresh and fried to perfection. Randy Holt and cook Chess Smith heated the chopped, Eastern-style barbecue and made sure the hush puppies were properly greased.

"We close at 6 every day," said Holt, who once managed the restaurant for an owner who bought it from the founder of the place, the late Clyde Cooper. "But when U2 calls you, you do what you have to do, honey."

They threw in fresh banana pudding for good measure.

Debbie Holt and her 14-year-old daughter, Ashley, took their van to the private lot at RDU where U2's jet was waiting.

"I screamed like a little girl," she said.

The pair was escorted by eight security guards into the back of the jet, near ovens and kitchen space. They worked in the tight confines of the jet while the band was roaring through the final moments of their stadium show.

Debbie Holt was still holding on to a pan when guitarist Dave "The Edge" Evans appeared, fresh from the show, standing six inches in front of her. He was the only band member they met.

"He said, 'Hi, how are you? Did you bring me food?' I lost it when I saw him," she said. "If I would've known he would move that close, I would've kissed him."

The Edge and staff members tore into the pork skins and loved the banana pudding, said Holt, who has co-owned the restaurant with her husband since the summer of 2008.

This isn't the only time Cooper's, which opened on New Year's Day in 1938, has seen celebrity attention. The Rolling Stones, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and the Allman Brothers have visited the restaurant, Debbie Holt said. Just last week, Clay Aiken dropped by for a bite, she said.

Holt and her daughter left the jet after about 20 minutes. Maurice handed them $300. Not much of a tip.

"But U2 is something else, honey," Debbie Holt said. "I don't care, and I've been a crazy woman ever since. I'd much rather serve them than go to the concert."

" October 5, 2009 -- Telegraph (UK)

Paris Fashion Week: Stella McCartney

McCartney unleashed a fireworks parade of pink, orange, electric blue, sunflower-yellow, and turquoise sundresses for spring/summer 2010.

Stella McCartney is a designer generally known for her muted palette in subtle shades of flesh, grey and cream.

But for next spring/summer she is moving into The Tropics.

McCartney unleashed a fireworks parade of pink, orange, electric blue, sunflower-yellow, turquoise and purple, in her show this morning at the Paris pręt-ŕ-porter season.

The showing, in the Palais de Tokyo, drew a celebrity-packed front row, including her father, Sir Paul McCartney, and his girlfriend, Nancy Shevell; the author JK Rowling; the actresses, Charlotte Rampling and Gwyneth Paltrow; Princess Caroline of Monaco; Twiggy; Dasha Zhukova, the girlfriend of Roman Abramovich, who is currently pregnant with her first child; Yasmin Le Bon; and Laura Bailey.

Stella McCartney's collection dazzled, with a whirling, swirling parade of halter-necks, minidresses and floor-grazing sundresses, in a blaze of hand-painted wisteria and roses, printed on silk and chiffon.

Giant ruffles adorned necks, bared shoulders, and danced around knees and ankles.

The Russian star model, Natalia Vodianova, twirled in a Sunray-pleated, one-shouldered baby-doll dress, in a hot-pink and scarlet, wisteria-print.

Bright orange bustiers came with loose, cropped trousers in strawberry-pink silk; a strapless, A-line dress was in electric blue, silk shantung; and a similar, ruffle-front jacket was paired with violet silk, crepe-de-chine trousers.

McCartney showed her softer side with plunge-neck lace blouses in white and cream; a new, wrapover trouser, in beige and cream; and a coffee, ribbed vest, worn with culottes in chocolate linen. Playful romper-suits, long T-shirt dresses and a sexy, crossover body, with ruffled edges came in shadow-dyed, stonewashed, cotton and stretch-knit.  "

U2's 360° Tour is selling out globally, but no lines formed for No Line on the Horizon, an album that has sold 1 million copies in seven months -- shy of the tally that 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb racked up in two weeks.

"We didn't have a hit," Bono says. " 'Get On Your Boots' is going over better and better live, but that spongy funky sound didn't connect with rock radio. If your first single doesn't go off, it can knock the momentum. We believe in the songs and we want people to have them in their hearts and their iPods."

Missing 2008's fourth quarter hurt sales, which in an era of rampant piracy no longer reflect the music's reach.

"You don't know how far the music travels," says bassist Adam Clayton. "The new songs get a great reaction live. Nobody's yawning or groaning. Releasing it outside that last quarter made it more uphill. Other factors skew the numbers. The record business is collapsing, and radio and the media."

What's beyond Horizon? A trio of albums, starting with the ambient Songs of Ascent, containing surplus material from Horizon sessions. It may include the buzzed-about "Every Breaking Wave."

"It's a very intimate affair," Bono says. "They are beautiful love songs, where the object of love is not always obvious."

The band also wants to finish its shelved rock album with producer Rick Rubin, and Bono and Edge are wrapping up songs for the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical.

"That's a monster album, a wild ride with very big songs," says Bono, who hopes the pair's project will evolve into a U2 album with special guests. "Edge and I knew it had to be dramatic, melodic and character-based. We'd just dream up the maddest stuff. Spider-Man may be the funnest project I've ever been involved with. Never a dull day, never a dark day until a few weeks ago when we woke up to the news that the production company had run out of cash."

Bono asked Canadian promoter Michael Cohl to help get the project on track. Spidey may be delayed but won't be derailed, he says.

Release dates are indefinite.

"The Spider-Man collection is the most developed but the least appropriate to the band," Edge says. "We've got so much material at different stages of completion, it's going to be a nice problem when we've got a few weeks to look at it."

In America, we believe big time in publicizing the shit out of 'we ain't talkin'.' First we make goddamn sure that everybody knows we ain't saying anything. Then we get three jets for each syllable, Van-Ha-Len, and ya gotta line 'em up so that it spells out. We reconnoiter a super studio somewhere tropical, salt water, solar power, fly the entire mad dog and Englishman retinue, wives, girlfriends, household pets, favorite paintings, don't pack light. Bring the palm trees, and we'll go get someplace with a vaguely French name like 'mosquito.' We'll spend three months down there, 90 days metric, putting together an entire album and rehearsing said material plus all the classic VH stuff by loading all of this 80 to a 120 person entourage onto between four and seven great, grandiose tall masted sailboats, and touring adjacent islands and playing at thatched roof, propeller in the ceiling bars on Friday and Saturday nights. I would hire the Coen Brothers and Sonnenfeld as our cinematographer to make a documentary with a twist. Build a sub-plot or four or five. Dinners on Friday nights will be replete and complete with 40-plus guests, doesn't include the 120 original members-Quentin Tarantino, Heidi Fleiss...now I'm just going off the top of my head here, this is just the first 38 seconds of recon here. Then it becomes suddenly evident that we must tour. Well, that means we have to rehearse in Paris, London, NY, Miami and LA. Just to get the flavor, because you play like what you ate for dinner. And then we run the band through its paces in the Pacific Rim and South America. And we leak, dribble, ooze and supply the internet with all the most colorful, rumor-mongering, gossip, detailed, tabloidal...'they were chasing him and nine paparazzi were killed in a tunnel.'
--David Lee Roth, on how he would record a new Van Halen album.

**** SIGH !!!! *****

" The iconic cover of Abbey Road, which shows the band crossing the street. McCartney is barefoot, similar to how corpses are typically buried; while Lennon, dressed in all white, is theoretically the preacher; George Harrison, in denim, is the gravedigger; and Ringo Starr, in a dark suit, is the mourner. A license plate in the distance reads "28IF," supposedly signifying that the bassist would have been 28 years old had he lived.

* Played backwards, a bit of gibberish between "I'm So Tired" and "Blackbird" on the "White Album," appears to be Lennon's voice saying "Paul is dead, miss him, miss him."

* Lennon appears to utter "I buried Paul" during the outro to "Strawberry Fields Forever," on the "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Years later, Lennon confirmed what close listenings suggest: Actually, he inexplicably says "cranberry sauce."

* On the "Sgt. Pepper" album cover, wax effigies of the band members appear to be looking down on a flower arrangement in the shape of McCartney's familiar violin-shaped Hoffner bass. "
