--"YOU SHALL BE GREETED!!!!"

Sixteen minutes after the lights went dark, three songs into his set, Bono made his way to the front of the most colossal -- and we're guessing the most expensive -- stage that Giants Stadium has ever seen.

"Try this," he told the crowd.

He plucked the fourth song from Achtung Baby, an album U2 released 18 years ago. Eighteen years did little to numb the effect of this particular song. "Mysterious Ways" still connects, aging as comfortably as the band members who perform it. It took a polite-but-expectant crowd and turned it into a yes-we're-on-board-now crowd during Wednesday night's show at Giants Stadium.

The show kicked off at 8:59 p.m., with steady plumes of smoke spewing from the center of the giant space needle that was perched atop the roof of the stage. The smoke drifted sideways, floating toward Section 303.

By 9:02 p.m., it was U2's turn to show that this elaborate stage was more than smoke and mirrors. Larry Mullen Jr. walked out first, waving to the crowd and taking a seat behind the drums. The Edge and Adam Clayton, the band's two guitarists, followed Mullen's lead.

Then came Bono, wearing his signature black jacket and inimitable pair of shades. The crowd came ready to scream.

U2 opened with three straight songs from No Line on the Horizon, an album that sold a bunch of copies but earned only mixed reviews from critics and fans. Bono kicked off the show with "Breathe," then played "Magnificent" and "Get On Your Boots."

Done with the obligatory new material, Bono launched into "Mysterious Ways." Could he top that? He didn't even need to sing the fifth song -- "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Bono moved the microphone away from his lips and let the crowd handle this one, tapping his heart in appreciation while the crowd filled in on lead vocals.

There were other sweet moments. He paid homage to The Boss, referencing Bruce Springsteen's 60th birthday and then playing a cover of "She's the One."

"Excuse us, Bruce," Bono joked afterward.

No song from the first half of the set was as touching as "Stuck in a Moment." For all the stage's bells and whistles, this song took a more minimalist approach. A few spotlights, a few microphones, and touching music.

No song from the second half of the set was as touching as the band’s 30-second cover of "Amazing Grace."

"The second half of the show featured some of the band's heart-pounding anthems and ballads, including "One," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "With or Without You" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." At the end of "Sunday," Bono told the crowd, "We send a message of love from New Jersey" and called for freedom of speech in Iran.

Was the gigantic stage -- with its cream-colored claw and orange buttons, with its radio tower-esque spire that stretched higher than the cheap seats -- really necessary? Maybe not. But the band tried to at least take advantage of the elaborate set. Bono sat on a rotating bridge during the start of "Beautiful Day." Clayton and The Edge took turns circling the outer ring of the 360-degree stage.

Its biggest drawback: Stadium shows make even the best performers look like ants. The size of the stage made these rockers appear even smaller.

Muse opened for the Irishmen on Wednesday night, playing a 47-minute set as most of the crowd filtered into the stadium.

The biggest rock band in the world came to New Jersey Wednesday night with a massive stage, its famously sweeping sound and something else: a sense of humor.

The juggernaut known as U2 played a refreshingly casual set at Giants Stadium, reducing the 60,000-seat venue, and the band's humongous, four-limbed, 150-foot tall stage set -- nicknamed The Spaceship -- to an almost intimate scale. (The band plays again Thursday at Giants Stadium.)

Bono played the amiable host, introducing his bandmates -- bassist Adam Clayton, drummer Larry Mullen Jr and guitarist The Edge -- as if fans might not be familiar with them.

In homage to local boy Bruce Springsteen (celebrating his 60th birthday), the band covered his classic "She's the One," then seamlessly moved into its own classic "Desire." Later, Bono dedicated "It's a Beautiful Day" to Quincy Jones, somewhere in the crowd, by blending that song with Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

It was a surprising approach from a band whose name has become almost synonymous with grandiosity and whose singer has become an influential humanitarian as well as a pop star. "I don't wanna talk about wars between nations," Bono sang on the new song "Get on Your Boots," though he added, "Not right now."

That was one of several songs the band played from its 12th studio album, No Line on the Horizon, including the moody title track. But for most fans, the high point seemed to be past favorites such as "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," on which Bono gladly let the crowd take lead vocals, and "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which he bookended with salutes to political dissidents in Iran.

Parts of the show centered on a vague space theme, with footage of astronauts appearing on a giant wrap-around video screen (hence the name of the "360-Degree Tour").

But the band made light of that, too. Walking over a bridge from the stage into the crowd, the somewhat diminutive Bono joked, "One step for a small man."

Sir Paul McCartney : Beatles were planning reunion before Lennon's death

Sir Paul McCartney has said that the Beatles were planning to reunite before John Lennon was shot dead in 1980.

The singer admitted that though they were set to receive huge offers yet they believed it wouldn't be as big as the 60's.

"We talked about it a lot. And we always said that, if we did, it might not be great, whereas the Beatles career had been," the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

"And even though the offers were huge, and there were sort of people going, 'I'll pay you this to do it,' we talked about it and we sort of said, 'Nah, this is it. There is something not right about it' ," he added.

McCartney believes they were an amazing band.

He added: "Looking back, you know, I'm a big Beatles fan. I think we were one hot band. And Ringo and I, whenever we get together, we look at each other and just go, 'We were a damn good group. Great band'."

McCartney was present with Ringo Starr, John's widow Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia at the launch of The Beatles: Rock Band computer game and the new digitally remastered catalogue of albums.

He spoke about the game: "I think it's really good. They have done really well in capturing our characters, which is one of the things we were careful about.

"We were very careful. We'd say, 'Well, George wouldn't move like that, Ringo didn't drum like that, I would have had the guitar that way'

"The guys who made it started saying, 'Well, we can do this and we can take you through your career, and we can start at The Cavern, then we do this and we get into the psychedelic period'."

U2 has announced the first set of dates in 2010 for the U2 360 tour, and they include a couple countries the band has never played before. Here's the list of announced dates from U2.com, but we don't believe this is the whole European Tour; for starters, the text on U2.com mentions Brussels, but it's not on the actual list, and two, there continue to be strong rumors of a show in Israel -- but these are still just rumors. It's also odd that there are no UK or Irish shows. Here's what U2 did announce:

August 10, 2010 - Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt, Germany
August 12, 2010 - AWD Stadium, Hannover, Germany
August 15, 2010 - Stadium, Horsens, Denmark
August 20, 2010 - Olympic Stadium, Helsinki, Finland
August 25, 2010 - Luzhniki, Moscow, Russia
August 30, 2010 - Ernst Happel Stadium, Vienna, Austria
September 3, 2010 - Olympic Stadium, Athens, Greece
September 6, 2010 - Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey
September 15, 2010 - Olympic Stadium, Munich, Germany
September 18, 2010 - Stade De France, Paris, France
September, 2010 - Olympic Stadium, Seville, Spain
October 2, 2010 - Stadium, Coimbra, Portugal

The dates in Moscow and Istanbul will mark the first time U2 has played concerts in Russia and Turkey, respectively. The Athens show will be their second in Greece. Helsinki will only be their third show in Finland.

Ticket sales for some of these dates start as soon as next week, so get yer wallet out. We also anticipate 2010 dates to be announced in North America,
South America, and Australia/New Zealand, if not others.
(Live Nation seems hellbent on making this the highest-grossing tour of all-time.)

U2.com has also announced a new subscriber package for 2010 and it includes ticket presale opportunities for members, plus a "unique remix album." Visit U2.com for more details about that.
