' joey , what is jb's favorite beatles tune ? '

" If I fell in love with you
could you promise to be true
And help me understand
'Cause I've been in love before
And I've found that love is more
That just holding hands

If I gave my heart to you
I must be sure from the very start
that you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
don't run and hide,
if I love you too, oh please
don't hurt my pride like her

'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad
If our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
would love to love you
And that see will cry
when she learns we are two

'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad
If our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
would love to love you
And that see will cry
when she learns we are two
If I fell in love with you .... "

" September 10, 2009 -- Halifax News

McCartney banners going to the highest bidder - Profits will be donated to charity

The Paul McCartney street banners and bus boards are such hot commodities the promoter is giving them up for a charity auction.

Greg Cox of Power Promotions says people were calling from as far away as Missouri and California looking to buy them for as much as $500 each. Some even scaled 20-foot lampposts along Brunswick Street to get their hands on about 10 of them.

"That's when the light bulb went off and I said 'Maybe we should sell these suckers,'" Cox said. "Normally, street banners and bus boards end up in the trash. We recognized early, based on demand, that these had value. Donating them to charity was the obvious choice."

Never before have people been so hot after concert posters, he says, adding that he thinks it's because McCartney is so iconic.

"If you could compare him to any other performer, it would be the likes of Michael Jackson and perhaps U2," Cox said.

One fan told Cox at the concert he was keeping a $6 concessions ticket that said Paul McCartney on it as a souvenir. "Like anything with McCartney on it is of value to some of these people who enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he said.

Cox said Audrey McCombs was one of the people who bought a banner for a few hundred dollars. McCombs is the 19-year-old from California who made headlines and YouTube when McCartney called her up on the stage in the Halifax Common to sign her arm so that she could get it tattooed.

"She said 'I'm going to college. I've got this tattoo and I'd love to have one in memory of the night,'" Cox said.

The banners and bus boards were donated to The Arthritis Society. Heather Hanson, manager of development for The Arthritis Society, is excited about the donation.

"I went to the concert. Being there, I can appreciate how well the city (and concert goers) embraced Paul McCartney," she said. "I'm really thrilled."

With September being Canada's Arthritis Awareness Month, Hanson said the generous donation is also great timing and a fun and unique way to raise money for the organization. "Any time that you have a potential fundraiser like this, you also want to raise some awareness for your cause," she added.

The dates for the upcoming auction haven't been settled, but to check for updates, visit www.arthritis.ca. ; "

" jew won't see me......  "

" One of the privileges of my generation is the opportunity to watch the once-mighty play small clubs, but seeing someone of Roger Daltrey's stature didn't seem possible. But it's happening. In preparation for a flurry of activity by the Who in 2010, Daltrey is participating in a two-month jaunt where he promises to mine his own catalog for rare gems, and pull out Who songs that have not seen the light of day for some time. If the purpose is to get ready to grease the tracks for the big Who train, the most dedicated fans will have a chance to hang around the station for awhile.

After a long static period Daltrey and the Who are hardly over the hill. Three years ago they released Endless Wire, the rare occurrence of an old band making new music that actually matches the strength of their earlier efforts. On the side Daltrey has continued acting, such as an episode of CSI where he played a character that assumes four different disguises. And last year, The Who was honored at a Presidential ceremony at the Kennedy Center.

Not so long ago we didn't really expect much more from The Who, aside from another victory lap. So it is nice to know there are still some surprises left.

Sonic Boomers: How are you preparing for the tour?

Roger Daltrey: I'm just sorting through material that I can represent, old solo stuff that I have never done live, and songs that the Who haven't played for years. The idea is to get out there and sing, have some fun, and give people a good time during these miserable economic times.

SB: Do you need to play certain songs that you don't like, or that people will be disappointed to not hear?

RD: There will always be people who will be disappointed, with a catalog like the Who. I want to do songs that the Who haven't done in the last ten years, or if I do them it will be totally different, my version of what they should be. There is a lot that I haven't done live, like from my last solo album (1992's Rocks in the Head), which has four good rock songs that I want to play. With all this material it's more like: "what do I leave out?" People will be disappointed that I  won't be doing "Won't Get Fooled Again" and I won't. Or "My Generation." If they shout loud enough it will be easy enough to slip them in, but artistically I want to do stuff that is more of a challenge.

SB: What about playing in small clubs?

RD: I'm looking forward to the intimacy and talking to the audience, which is something that I don't really do with the Who. There will be a change in the amount of energy, and ability to reach out and touch the back wall, if you like.

SB: What are you usually thinking onstage?

RD: When I'm onstage with the Who I am always trying to get my brain together for the next song. You live all these words, and play the song as if it were the first time. It takes me to a space where things come naturally and subconsciously, which is much better than having something planned out. I don't think in a real sense. If I start thinking too much about it I lose my way. I forget the words.

SB: Do you use teleprompters?

RD: No.

SB: You've played more guitar with the Who lately. Does that take away from your singing?

RD: No, it's easier for the phrasing and the rhythm, if I am playing guitar. There are a lot of acoustic guitars on Who records, so it's nice to put some of it back. I don't swing the microphone as much, but the old eye and the old shoulder aren't good for that kind of thing anymore. I'm a bit worried about missing it, and whacking someone.

SB: You and Pete were honored last year at the Kennedy Center, where George Bush read a tribute. What were you thinking, then?

RD: I was thinking "what the fuck am I doing here?" It was not a political event, and it was a not a place to drive in your politics. It was totally surreal. Everyone was very gracious. I just went for the party.  It was great to have two days of people entertaining me rather than me having to entertain them. It was a wonderful event, especially with the history of the band over the last ten years, with John going. It's been a hell of a roller coaster.

SB: But when he introduced you Bush didn't seem to know who you were.

RD: It didn't matter. That's all personalities and politics. I don't give a shit about that. It was nice to be honored by America, which I have a great affection for. With all those other people, Morgan Freeman, Barbara Streisand, Twyla Tharp, all who are at the top of their professions, I wondered, how did I end up here?

So we accepted it, graciously. I didn't ever do anything great to deserve this, it's just what I do. I was wonderful to be honored by your country, and I was really proud of Pete. He is one of the great popular music writers of the twentieth century. He's made his mark, that's for sure. And I had the good luck to be the voice for that. And I have never forgotten how lucky I have been. During that time have I added something to the mix? Yes, there's no doubt. The two of us together have always had a lot more strength than either one of us individually.

SB: There has been some friction, though.

RD: There is still a tension between us. We respect each other, but we don't always agree. We have the courage to challenge each other all the time. It's a fiery mix. When Pete and I hit the stage together it's like, "fuck me, there's something dangerous going on here." We just know if one of us makes a mistake the other will jump right in. There aren't so many arguments anymore, they're just differences of opinion. We don't have the same drive to argue as we did when we were younger, but in some ways we will always be tied to our past.

SB: What about this rumor that Charlie Watts has left the Rolling Stones?

RD: If Charlie leaves the Stones, the Stones are all over.  I hope that they do another tour, where they strip down and be like when they started. For me, that would be magic. They're a great band. I hope that Keith can still move his fingers enough to play the way he plays. Mick is singing better than ever. But he should stop running around on those big stages. They don't need the circus anymore. They are great musicians.

SB: What is the future of the Who?

RD: It's very bright, which is the reason why I am doing this tour. We are going to be demoing stuff for a new album in December and I want to be in top voice for that. When we recorded the last one we hadn't been out for three years. But the Who will be gigging next year, we have some big events lined up. We could play Quadrophenia, or Tommy, or go with the show we have now, which is greatest hits with some more obscure ones put in. My dream would be go on the road and do Tommy for a week, Quadrophenia for a week and then the hits show the week after. With the Who we are never short of material.

SB: You could go on tour but not tell the fans what they are getting at a particular show.

RD: That's worth a try, isn't it?

SB: What is Zak Starkey's role in the Who? Is he is an official member?

RD: He's not a full member, but he is our drummer of choice. He fits so well into the Who. It's one thing to have someone who musically fits, but Zak's personality fits totally into the band. We have a very cohesive family on the road.

SB: Your CSI appearance was quite a showcase.

RD: I‘ve never seen it, although it was great fun. It was a most extraordinary week. I got to sing Frank Sinatra's "That's Life," which is a great song. I got the script and had some notion what to do with the characters, but had no clear idea until after they put on all the prosthetics. If you don't know what the character looks like it's hard to give them a body language and mannerisms. Then they put in the colored contact lenses, you look at yourself, and you are a complete stranger. I'm not sure that I've ever even seen CSI all the way through. It's not that I am not a fan of CSI. I'm just not a fan of TV. "

Joey, I heard from a guy I know in the know, who says the upcoming Stones stage will be huge. It will use the Claw to pick dingleberries from it's hiney.

Declaring that "all you need is love -- and a spaceship," U2 brought its 360 Tour to North America on Saturday night (Sept. 12) with the first of two shows at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Playing its first full-scale U.S. concert since 2006 before a packed house, the Irish quartet presented a 23-song, two-hour and 15-minute show that followed the mold set by the European leg of the tour earlier in the summer. And like those dates, the star of the show was The Claw, the 164-foot-tall, space-age, crustacean-like stage that houses a variety of visual effects that U2 frontman Bonn told the crowd "we built..to bring us closer to you" via a series of ramps and bridges, as well as a large circular video screen that expanded and contracted, accordion-style. Even drummer Larry Mullen, Jr., was able to play to all sides of the stadium via a rotating platform for his kit.

But unlike previous stadium tours such as 1992's Zoo TV Outside Broadcast and the 1997-98 Popmart trek, neither U2 nor its songs was dwarfed by the visual spectacle. Rather, The Claw and its components enhanced the songs, which included seven from the group's latest album, "No Line on the Horizon" -- four of which opened Saturday's show -- and a careful selection from U2's 29-year recording catalog. "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" remained in the set after more than a decade and a half away each, while "Elevation" and "Bad" were special "treats," the latter concluding with snippets of the Rolling Stones' "Fool to Cry" and U2's own "40." The group also slipped a bit of the Beatles' "Blackbird" into "Beautiful Day," Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" into "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Oliver's Army" by Elvis Costello into "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which was accompanied by video images of this year's violent Iranian election protests.

The emotional high point, however, was "Walk On;" dedicated, as usual, to imprisoned Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi, it was performed while three-dozen "volunteers" stood on the lower stage ramp holding masks bearing her likeness in front of their faces and was followed by a powerful version of "Where the Streets Have No Name." The tour program also included Suu Kyi masks for audience members to wear.

Bono also celebrated the tour's opening locale, telling the Chicagoans "there is nowhere else we'd want to be this evening than hear, the heart of America" and claiming "small part" for the Irish in the city's "majestic skyline." "We're the wind in the Windy City," he noted, subsequently explained a lack of humility by explaining that, "When you put this band with this crowd, there is no room for modesty. Anything is possible."

U2 will be in North America until Oct. 28, when the tour wraps in Vancouver. The group's 2010 itinerary has not been revealed, but it's expected to return to North America in June and July, then reprise Europe in August and September before heading to South America later in the year.

The set list for U2's North American opening night included:

"Breathe"
"No Line on the Horizon"
"Get On Your Boots"
"Magnificent"
"Beautiful Day"
"Elevation"
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
"Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"
"Unknown Caller"
"The Unforgettable Fire"
"City of Blinding Lights"
"I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Redanka remix)"
"Sunday Bloody Sunday"
"Pride (In the Name of Love)"
"MLK"
"Walk On"
"Where The Streets Have No Name"
(encore)
"One"
"Bad"
(encore)
"Ultraviolet (Light My Way)"
"With or Without You"
"Moment of Surrender"

Disney to remake Yellow Submarine

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8253104.stm

Yellow Submarine was an animated film based on The Beatles' music
A 3D remake of The Beatles' 1968 film Yellow Submarine has been confirmed, Disney Studios has announced.

It will incorporate the 16 Beatles songs and recordings from the original animated film.

Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said the new film will be directed by Robert Zemeckis using the same motion-capture effects employed in Polar Express.

Meanwhile, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been confirmed as the name of the new film in the series.

Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the fourth instalment, which will debut in 2011.

Disney has also said it was starting a new "scary movie" label venture with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro called Disney Double Dare You.

The announcements were made at a four-day fan convention in California, that featured appearances from Depp, Tim Burton, Miley Cyrus and Nicolas Cage.

John Travolta also turned up with wife Kelly Preston.

It was the couple's first public appearance since the death of their son, Jett, in January.

BY JIM DeROGATIS Music Critic
Touring in support of its first two albums in the new millennium, the unadventurous U2-by-the-numbers “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” (2000) and “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” (2004), Bono and the boys were in danger of becoming their generation’s Rolling Stones — a rote if occasionally rousing arena act more devoted to selling tickets than to breaking new musical ground.

Released last February, “No Line on the Horizon,” the Dublin band’s 12th studio album, came as a welcome surprise: Though they didn’t always succeed, the musicians at least took chances again, veering from that familiar U2 bombast to deliver their most creative disc since “Achtung Baby” (1991). Unfortunately, the new album also has been the slowest selling of their career, with U.S. sales yet to reach platinum status of a million sold — a fact that can be attributed to no one buying CDs anymore, or to fans being turned off by the group’s experimentation.

U2 rocks Soldier Field

RELATED STORIESMore on the U2 show at Jim DeRogatis' blog

Eighteen years ago, “Achtung Baby” inspired the Zoo TV Tour, a multimedia sensory assault that stands as the most inventive arena jaunt I’ve witnessed.

The question looming over Soldier Field on Saturday night as U2 launched the North American leg of its 360 Tour at the first of two concerts in Chicago was whether the band would uphold the creative spirit of the new album, matching or topping Zoo TV, or play it safe in an attempt to reconnect with conservative fans and please its new partner, giant national concert promoter Live Nation.

The answer, as is often the case with this band, was that it tried to do it all and please everyone.

Though it avoided the most ambient and atmospheric of the new tracks crafted with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the group did play a hefty chunk of “No Line on the Horizon,” including the strong show opener “Breathe,” the hypnotizing “Unknown Caller” and the soaring “Magnificent,” which really was.

But in place of the disorienting buzz of Zoo TV, U2 gave us the empty spectacle of the multimillion-dollar stage fans have come to call “the Claw,” a ludicrous, fog-belching, crablike mega-structure that primarily succeeds in dwarfing the musicians onstage, recalling David Bowie’s equally silly Glass Spider Tour and making recent Stones stages seem modest in comparison. (U2 really ought to talk to the Flaming Lips, who’ve been building a more impressive UFO stage out of supplies found at Home Depot at a cost of a few thousand bucks.)

Zoo TV wasn’t the superior experience only because of technology, though. The early ’90s were the only period in U2’s three-decades-plus career when the band dared to laugh at itself, with Bono trading his messiah complex for irony and the Macphisto alter ego, and the group suggesting that maybe, just maybe, its desire to save the world was a bit pompous and self-aggrandizing.

Alas, the crusaders were back Saturday, linking “Sunday Bloody Sunday” to Iranian pro-democracy demonstrators, turning “Walk On” into an act of solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese politician under house arrest, and trotting out Archbishop Desmond Tutu on video to make a plea to end poverty and cure AIDS.

Um, Bono, old chum, many activists cite corporate globalization as the prime culprit responsible for some of the ills just cited. Care to explain how that jibes with you and the band wholeheartedly endorsing Live Nation’s controversial mega-merger with Ticketmaster? On second thought, maybe there was some irony on Saturday.

In between the bounty of new tunes, the band trotted out the expected crowd pleasers — “Beautiful Day,” “Pride (In the Name of Love),” “Where the Streets Have No Name” — though some of these were truncated or delivered medley-style with awkward bits of covers (“Blackbird,” “Stand By Me,” “Oliver’s Army”), with choppy and unsatisfying results.

As always, the deft rhythm section of drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton did their best to keep things moving, and the Edge was a deceptively simple one-man orchestra. Meanwhile, Bono posed and preened, emoted and yowled, flogging every millimeter of charisma he possesses. But as someone who has seen the group on nearly every tour since it first came to the U.S., I never found what I was looking for — that perfect mix of genuine passion and stadium-rock showmanship.

This band just may not be capable of it anymore — which means it may have become the Rolling Stones after all. "
