The Irish rock band U2 grossed more than $100 million in the first 13 shows of its 360 Degrees tour, box office totals show.

Billboard.com reported Friday the "With or Without You" rockers grossed $28.8 million of their total during three shows at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, in late July.

The profitable Dublin performances allowed U2 to post the fourth-highest recorded gross for a performance run at a single location.

The U2 performances were narrowly edged out for third by the 1999 Woodstock festival, while the Spice Girls' 2008 performances at London's O2 Arena held second overall with $33.8 million in earnings.

Tops on the single gross concert list was U.S. singer Bruce Springsteen, who raked in $38.6 million at Giants Stadium in New York in 2003.

Billboard.com said Springsteen and U2, along with pop star Madonna, are the only touring musical acts to have exceeded $100 million in overall ticket sales so far in 2009

AGREB — More than 120,000 fans from all over southeastern Europe have gathered in Zagreb to see legendary rock group U2 on their only stopover in the region on their current 360 Degree Tour of the world.
It is the Irish band's first visit to the region since their concert in Sarajevo in 1997. Local media have dubbed the two shows "the performance of the decade."

Some 63,000 people filled Zagreb's Maksimir Stadium on Sunday night, and as many again are expected at a second concert on Monday, organisers said.

More than 40,000 fans have arrived in the Croatian capital from countries including Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Slovakia and Romania.

The event has dominated news in the Croatian media for the past week, with detailed reports of the setting up of the stage on the home turf of the Dinamo Zagreb football club.

The futuristic décor is dominated by a huge metal structure nicknamed "the claw," which measures 50 metres (160 feet) and weighs 390 tonnes.

The opening concert on Sunday lasted around two hours and included songs from No Line on the Horizon, the band's 12th album which was released in February.

Zagreb is one of 15 European cities on the 360 Degree Tour, which began on June 30 in Barcelona and will end in October in Vancouver, Canada, with a total of 44 concerts scheduled.

By the end of the tour, the group will have performed before an estimated three million fans.

Paul McCartney Sets Fenway Park Concert Attendance Record

Before the Boston Red Sox were embarrassed by the New York Yankees with a four-game sweep this weekend in the Bronx, there was some good news at the Sox' home stadium: Paul McCartney came to town for a pair of concerts on August 5th and 6th at Fenway Park, and according to Live Nation, McCartney's pair of gigs set a new record for the highest-ever two-night attendance in the stadium's 97-year history.

Read Rock Daily's report from McCartney's first Citi Field performance in New York, featuring Billy Joel.

Remarking on McCartney's set list those two nights - a blend of newer tracks alongside solo and Beatles favorites - Live Nation East's Dave Marsden joked, "No one in history has ever had 33 hits in one night at Fenway Park." According to the Baseball Almanac, Marsden is right: The most hits by the Red Sox at Fenway Park in one night is 28 on June 27th, 2003, a game which saw Boston beat the Florida Marlins 25-8. The Red Sox scored 14 runs in the first inning of that game, 11 before an out was recorded, which is also probably a record.

It goes without saying that McCartney also set the three-night attendance record for a concert at New York's Citi Field, considering that Macca was the first artist to perform at the new home of the New York Mets. (The show marked 44 years since the Beatles' historic show at the Mets then-home Shea Stadium.) Three more dates remain on McCartney's North American tour: An August 15th concert at Atlanta's Piedmont Park, August 17th in Tulsa, Oklahoma and a visit to Dallas' new Cowboys Stadium to close out his summer trek on August 19th. Paul McCartney live at Fenway Park

It was over an hour and a half into a sweltering set of hits that Paul McCartney decided to exert even more energy into his concert. Right before manically banging his fingers against the keys of a grand piano, McCartney sang the words "Live and let die," prompting fireworks to shoot into the night sky behind him, golden sparks raining down majestically upon Fenway Park on August 5th.

A sea of Beatles t-shirts washed over Yawkey Way before the show as anxious ticket holders flooded Gate A, eager to join their brethren inside the park who were already singing along to McCartney tunes being played on the loudspeakers. Though no tickets were sold in the "Monster Seat" section, bleachers and infield area, patrons easily filled in the remaining seats in the park.

A large stage was erected in the deepest section of centerfield with a few thousand additional seats added to the outfield area. Though the distance from an area like the loge section on the third base line was a healthy one from the stage, this shortcoming was made up for by two towering projection screens that provided video images of Sir Paul's every move.

The show, conducted in support of the former Beatles' Fireman effort, 'Electric Arguments', was McCartney's first at the hallowed baseball grounds, a fact that he playfully made sport of when talking about the Red Sox in a Boston accent (at least a Liverpool lad attempting to do a Boston accent).

McCartney's joking aside (and there were many in between songs), the set got off to a expeditious start with "Drive My Car" and "Jet" prompting much audience participation.

A series of tunes retrospective of Macca's post-Beatles career followed (including "Only Mama Knows", "Flaming Pie", "Let Me Roll It" and "Highway") before the band slowed things down for "The Long and Winding Road", which caused quite a few audience members to grow teary-eyed.

Despite being 67-years-old, McCartney bounced around stage with a youthful energy for two and a half hours, playing five separate instruments and interacting with the crowd between nearly every song.

"Dance Tonight", "Mrs. Vanderbilt", "I'm Down" and "Hey Jude" provided fun sing-alongs, the latter of which expectedly drew the largest response with McCartney breaking down the ending by asking only the men to sing a stanza, followed by the women. Upon hearing the women sing, McCartney asked them to repeat the lines as he posed like a male model. When he asked for the singing to be split between the back section and the front, however, the nosebleed section turned decidedly Fenway, booing those up front who didn't sing as loudly as they did.

McCartney honored his fellow Fab Four brothers when he pulled out a ukulele for a version of George Harrison's "Something", while John Lennon was honored with renditions of "Daytripper and "A Day in the Life". As quickly as the band launched into "Give Peace a Chance" they stopped playing, allowing the crowd to fill the park with an a cappella version while the soothing lights of the Prudential building twinkled in the distance. The wife of U2 frontman Bono has sparked a legal battle with Stella McCartney in a row over a new perfume, it was reported today.

Fashion designer McCartney is about to bring out the new fragrance Stella Nude, an eau de toilette of her Stella perfume.

But 47-year-old charity campaigner Ali Hewson -- Mrs. Bono -- and her business partner Bryan Meehan, the founder of the organic food chain Fresh & Wild, are understood to have taken umbrage at the use of the word "nude."

The business partners run Nude Skincare, which produces luxury all-natural skin care products and counts Helena Christensen among its fans.

Nude Skincare is reported to be suing for compensation over branding and the use of the word "nude," not because of anything to do with the scent of the perfume.

But "nude" as a concept is already a huge part of 37-year-old McCartney's fashion brand. She is well known for her collections based on nude flesh tones and this summer's catwalk show featured models draped from head to toe in flesh tones.

A source said: "It would be quite funny, if it wasn't being taken so seriously. There are other perfumes with similar names after all."

A writ has been issued and the case is understood to be coming before the Chancery division, which deals with copyright infringement and patent claims, this autumn.

McCartney is said to be hoping to settle the matter out of court.

The source added: "Stella isn't likely to make any changes now because the fragrance is coming out in September and nudity is a big part of the perfume's look. The bottle is a nude colour."

Perfumes using the word "nude" in their branding are available from Estée Lauder, Bijan and Bill Blass. Nude Skincare declined to comment.

U2 must cough up €80,000 for being too noisy at their Croke Park concerts, say residents.

They have said MCD, promoters of the three gigs, should forfeit the cash they lodged as a bond after breaching sound limits -- and give the money to the local community.

The residents spoke out as they prepared attempts to block any more concerts that would cause as much disruption as the U2 gigs.

They are to meet the GAA next month for talks on future events at the stadium.

Dublin City Council has confirmed that the 75-decibel maximum allowed at the venue under planning conditions was broken on all three nights of U2's 360 degree tour concerts.

Barbara Ward, of the Clonliffe and District Residents Association, said: "There was an €80,000 bond put up before the concerts and Dublin City Council were to withhold all or part of that bond if there were any breaches.

"We haven't heard yet what the council will do, but we want the full €80,000 to be withheld, and it should be reinvested in the area because we are the ones who had to put up with it."

Ms. Ward said there would be more protests if there was a repeat of the disruption caused by the creation of U2's "claw" stage.

Patrick Gates, of the Croke Park Residents Alliance, said he would be seeking guarantees from the GAA that the problems suffered would not be repeated at any future events.
