The U2 360° Tour, the largest tour ever, required a power and data network of equal scale. It needed to be quick and efficient to install and set up, have high network speed with absolutely no lag in cue reaction time, and it had to be rock-solid and flexible. Systems crew chief Craig Hancock worked with show director/designer Willie Williams from the early design phases of this production, and he engineered a power and data network that would satisfy all of the requirements of a tour of this magnitude.

The PRG Concert Touring group supplied the entire lighting package for the tour. The data and control system includes MA Lighting grandMA consoles and NSPs, Avolites dimmers and relays, City Theatrical SHoW DMX wireless DMX system, and as the backbone of it all the PRG Series 400™ Power and Data Distribution System. There are a total of 25 universes of DMX with custom dimmer carts at the bottom of each leg of the structure. These contain Series 400 racks, S400 main breaker racks, the Avo Art 2000 dimmer and relay racks, strobe distribution racks, communications, etc. There are a total of four carts up on the catwalk in the roof structure that handle the power and data for the lights in the roof as well as on the pylon. Using the Show DMX system, wireless DMX is sent from the top of the pylon (the central vertical element) out to the seven satellite lighting positions that are around the top of the stadium.

LD: Other than the sheer size, what is it that makes this set so spectacular?

HDM: The design, the 360° concept, the new technologies, and also the size of the organization. With three completely identical stages leapfrogging all over the world, 38 trucks of Stageco steel per set, and 25 Stageco crew, production involves over 250 people; and the scope of the vision of the whole team—from Stufish to Willie Williams and Jake Berry.

Stageco loves to be part of a team that takes a challenge and creates something that has never been seen or done before. The sheer scale of the engineering on this project goes way beyond anything previously seen in a touring stage. This gives the set, video, and lighting designers a great deal of artistic scope. Plus the scale of this project forced us to think alternatively, which ended up using a lot of new state of the art technologies: look at the computerized, hydraulic lifting, the stage design and scale, the video screen, and so on. We are part of a collective project whose passion is to amaze audiences on every creative level.

Speaking of the tour, are you one of the many who are waiting and wondering about "Drowning Man"? U2 rehearsed almost throughout the two weeks they spent at Camp Nou last month, but there's been nary a whiff of the song live. (And, no, I don't count Bono's reciting of a line or two from the song as a snippet.) If you're not a U2.com member, you may have missed this excerpt from one of Willie's Diaries -- the ongoing, awesomesauce writings of Willie Williams. This is from his June 27 diary entry on U2.com.

"We did another full run-through this evening, which has brought us very close to the set that I think we'll play on Tuesday. It's working well overall, with only a couple of things still proving troublesome. Drowning Man is one of these and I am beginning to wonder whether my judgement has been clouded by my sheer delight and joy at hearing this being performed live after 25 years waiting in the wings. Everybody really wants it to work and it sounds great but it's proving to be a very difficult mood to recover from. We tried going into Bad afterwards but by the end of that double-whammy of beautiful melancholy the set didn't recover for about half an hour. This may well be why U2 never performed this song in '83. I remember we tried a set which opened with it (brave move) but as far as I recall this was never unleashed on the public. We were all a bit too post-punk at the time, I think. The plan is to rehearse bits and pieces tomorrow night then do a final dress rehearsal on Monday at which point we'll make the call. We're going to shuffle its place in the show a little too, so it may not be over for Drowning Man just yet."

If I did not read this stupid thread, I would not know that u2 were touring.

Simply no media attention being given to it.

its a non event.

a shame. they used to be a "big" band.

I predict next summer they will be doing a shed tour opening for Depeche Mode and Echo & The BUnnyman

" Wu into DTME thru Reelin nearly equaled the energy both band and audience wise of "THE" Roseland gig. Crowd on its feet from Itchin' intros' till Tango outro. Carlton's second half playing more than made up for his virtual non-existence on the Aja set. Obviously the first time NYC Wu played a big part in my loving this night so much more so far. I also had zero problem with another Aja set. Both Sat and Mon the crowd was on hits feet at the end of each song and looong ovation at albums completion. Not so after each Aja tune last night, not as much at least. Last night contrary to twat and confirming previous post-Black Friday after T intro, prior to Aja; I also remember Deacon Blues in the set-perhaps too many shows merging with the alchohol? But BF opener for sure. Good to hear Dr Wu again; sounded more jazzed up than first time-also Sat night the crowds singing overshadowed DF and perhaps that's a major reason the youtube vids lead you to believe DF was off. He was overwhelmed by the audience responce and seemed to pick up on the energy more so than last night.Coulda sworn he wiped tears from his eyes after that first Wu (NYC) was done. I agree that Daddy was inserted for its NY theme as Boston Rag in Beantown; think that Rag was voted on, Daddy NOT. Still enjoyed it-WB had some great solos throughout it. Liked his Haitian D better, even liked his Gaucho better. Hopefully the non-special shows the rest of this week/tour will have full Aja slipped in as atreat along with DrWu. They.were both crowd pleasers and a major part of why so many fell in love with the band.  "

My Joshy need not be idolized ;

Or enlarged at ' Shidobee ' beyond what he was at ' Rocks Off ' .

He IS to be remembered as a kind and decent man ;

A man who saw wrong and tried to right it ...

Saw suffering and tried to heal it ...

Saw War and tried to STOP it .

And those of us who loved him ** Young Joey's voice now cracking with visceral and heartfelt emotion *** ;

And who take him to his ' transition ' here today .

Know that what he was and what he stood for ;

Will someday come to pass for all the world .

As he said many times in many posts throughout the decades ;

" Some Men see message boards the way they are and say , ' Why ?!?! ' ..... ' WHY ?!?! ' .........

I dream of message boards that never were and say , ' WTF ?!?! ' !!!!!!!! "

anybody here seen my old friend Joshy?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good they die young.

You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good they die young.

I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good they die young.

I just looked 'round and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?

Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?

And we'll be free

Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

I thought I saw him walk up over the hill,

With Joshy, Martin and John.

It’s not always easy to remember every song you’ve ever recorded. Just ask Steely Dan.

Singer / keyboardist Donald Fagen and guitarist Walter Becker have a few special moments in store for fans on the Dan’s late-summer tour. On select dates they’ll play one of three of their albums from start-to-finish while on other shows they’ll play requests fans post on the Steely Dan Web site.

Sure, other bands and artists do the album-in-its-entirety thing, and many do take requests. But for legendary perfectionists Fagen and Becker it means having to relearn some songs from back in the day.

“We had to learn a lot, a whole bunch of stuff we haven’t been doing, just trying to guess what people might vote for,” Fagen told the Associated Press.

Unlike, say, Crowded House, which accepts requests delivered by audience members via paper airplanes, or Springsteen, who fills up the night by taking requests fans have painted on signs handed up to The Boss during the show, Fagen and Becker had to limit their fans to 50 Steely Dan classics.

As for the complete album renditions, Fagen and Becker are performing one of three – Aja, Gaucho or The Royal Scam.

“We had stopped performing in the ‘70s when we recorded these three albums, so we never really went out to perform the tunes from these three albums,” Becker said.

“They’re only able to request Steely Dan songs from a menu of choices that has maybe 50 tunes on it,” Becker said. “Not knowing in advance what would be the most popular, what we’d end up playing, we couldn’t prepare all of the songs from all of the albums.”

And if you’re wondering how big an impact Steely Dan had on the world during the ‘70s and early 80s, Fagen summed it up very nicely.

“I’ve met many parents of Ajas and Josies over the years,” Fagen said. “It’s very flattering.”
