Sir Paul McCartney's children's book about the adventures of a squirrel is to be adapted for the big screen.

The musician will also write new songs for the animated version of High in the Clouds, according to Hollywood trade newspaper Variety.

Rob Minkoff, whose credits include The Lion King and the Stuart Little films, will direct the release.

The book, published in 2005, tells the story of Wirral The Squirrel's search for an animal sanctuary.

It was co-written by Philip Ardagh and illustrated by Geoff Dunbar.

'Child-like'

Michael Lynne, part of the team bringing the project to life, said: "Paul said he would commit a score of original songs as part of it."

He added that the story had convinced him and his partners to make an animated feature for the first time in their career.

Lynne's previous production credits include the blockbuster Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

This will be Sir Paul's biggest involvement in a major animation since The Beatles' Yellow Submarine in 1968, when he was one of the main stars of the film.

The songwriter's 1984 hit We All Stand Together was also taken from an animated feature, Rupert and The Frog Song.

Wirral the Squirrel, described as a "cheeky Scouse nut-muncher", made his animation debut in a video accompanying Sir Paul's 2004 song Tropical Island Hum.

The star said at the time that an interest in cartoons brought out some of his "child-like quality".

This concert event at FedExField marks the latest in a series of landmark performances that link the beloved Beatle with Washington D.C., beginning with The Beatles' first concert on American soil in 1964 at the Washington Coliseum, and continuing with McCartney's critically acclaimed appearances in the District over the past forty-five years.

The FedExField concert on August 1 will feature classics from McCartney's extensive catalog, including Beatles, Wings and solo career hits as well as selections from his most recent album Electric Arguments, released under his alias The Fireman.

Additionally, the FedExField show will be among McCartney's first U.S. appearances since his recent headlining stand at the first night of this year's Coachella festival and the same weekend's record-breaking one-off opening of the new Joint in Las Vegas. The FedExField concert will also come on the heels of Paul McCartney's three sold-out shows at the new Citi Field in New York, with the public snapping up tickets minutes after they went on sale.
McCartney gave his first ever American performance at the Washington Coliseum on February 11, 1964, a concert so historic that it was released to the public on DVD in 2003. Joined by the Caravelles, Tommy Rose, and the Chiffons, the Fab Four played to a capacity crowd of over 8,000 people, heralding the arrival of Beatlemania in the United States.

The show on August 1 at FedExField marks McCartney's first performance in Washington D.C. since October 8, 2005. Dave McKenna raved about the show in his review for the Washington Post, stating "folks came to hear McCartney sing, in a voice still strong enough to leave listeners awestruck."
