Is Paul McCartney on the run . . . to Fenway Park?

Don't breathe a word of this. Because nobody's supposed to know. But word from Yawkey Way is that Sir Paul McCartney will play two dates at Fenway Park in August. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Fenway management has applied to the city for a license to hold a concert - complete with pyrotechnics - at the old ballyard Aug. 5 and 6 when the Red Sox are in Tampa and New York.

Although no headliner is named in the application, word is, the former Beatle will play Fenway for the very first time.

Patricia Malone, director of the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing, acknowledged that "there are rumors" about McCartney, but she said the Sox suits aren't expected to reveal the name of the act until a public hearing June 22 at City Hall.

Adding more fuel to the Beatlemania is that Sir Paul, 66, yesterday announced he's playing Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets, on July 17 and 18.

The event in the Apple has a sense of history to it. The Fab Four played the first concert at Shea Stadium in 1965. And last summer Sir Paul returned to the ballpark as a surprise guest at Billy Joel's Last Play concert at Shea.

"I am really excited about playing Citi Field," McCartney said in a press release. "The Beatles were the first to play at Shea Stadium and, along with Billy Joel, I was the last to sing at the old Shea. So to be the first to play this stadium is incredible. I am really looking forward to a buzzing show."
