" No matter who you are in the music business, it's hard to tell a former member of The Beatles to stop playing if you are given the privilege of hosting one. So Coachella organizers can be forgiven for not informing Sir Paul McCartney that his performance was going beyond the curfew imposed on the festive. Indio Police spokesperson Ben Guitron said that Coachella organizers were warned that they'd be fined $1,000 for every minute after midnight that Coachella performance ran. McCartney's headlining opening night ran at least 50 minutes past the curfew, reports the L.A. Times.

In fact, not even the Indio police were going to try to shut down the chief orchestrator of Sgt. Pepper, but Guitron did say "we are talking to the people responsible. . . . If we end up having artists go a little over, there are consequences." Ultimately, the responsibility was up to concert promoter Goldenvoice to pull the plug, and while they will be the ones who will be disciplined here, they probably avoided a much more public and ultimately costly brou-ha-ha by not pulling the plug on McCartney.

Lest you think Indio's laws about public festivals rather Draconian, may we remind you about California's history of large outdoor concerts with British invation bands. "

Short takes from the new Joint

Killers homecoming, epic McCartney show make Hard Rock venue's first weekend special

" The Hard Rock was the hot, glowing center of the Vegas apopcalypse this weekend, opening its refurbed concert venue The Joint with the one-two-three combination of the Killers on Friday, Avenged Sevenfold on Saturday and Paul McCartney on Sunday. Sunday was also the first day of the "daylife" pool party season, with Snoop Dogg headlining for the hundreds of overheated, overserved hotties packed into the all-day Rehab party.

A few random observations, interpretations and Joint statements:

The Killers were lucky - or wise - to play a few days before McCartney, a living international treasure, whose Sunday set, basically a 2 1/2 hour standing ovation, effectively pre-eclipsed the rest of the Joint's season, setting the bar unapproachably high.

"They would have to call it that, right?," McCartney quipped, referring to the venue's name and his famed fondness for herbal refreshment. Fresh from rocking the Coachella Festival (the Killers played it, too), McCartney was preternaturally bouncy and boyish looking at 66, sporting a buttoned-up Beatlesque collarless black suit, which later revealed a white shirt and black suspenders.

"It's good in here, isn't it?" McCartney remarked, referring to the venue's sterling sound system, video screens and all-around comfort, which add up to make The Joint the best music venue in town. I saw the Killers from the top-floor seats  ................... "

Spinal Tap (unwigged) speechless in presence of Beatle

The lovable goofballs who made up Spinal Tap, the faux heavy metal band in Rob Reiner's 1984 cult classic comedy "This Is Spinal Tap" - the same guys who became the Folksmen in the 2003 mockumentary "A Mighty Wind" - are on tour.

"This is not a Spinal Tap tour. This is a Christopher, Michael and Harry tour," Harry Shearer tells the Sleuth. "We are out there as ourselves."

Ourselves would be Christopher Guest (known to Spinal Tap fans as Nigel Tufnel), Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) and Shearer (Derek Smalls).

The shows on their "Unwigged and Unplugged" tour are all acoustic, and nobody is in costume. The band's sound will be "familiar but different, in some cases radically different," says Shearer.

And even Shearer, who does all that and more, gets star struck. He tells us the coolest moment by far on this tour was having Paul McCartney walk in on their practice session at a rehearsal facility in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. Even before the trio had played a single note, McCartney walked in and demanded they play something. They came up with a Folksmen version of "Start Me Up."

"When you get a request from Paul McCartney..." the 60-something funnyman said, knowing he need not complete the sentence. "People say they've never seen the three of us so speechless for so long."
