Studio version - you know the deal
'72 - Electric guitar intro, nice lead guitar on the chorus, nice solo
'73 - same as '72, but some shows have loooonnng solos, including a sax solo, sounds nice, Keiths rhythm is rocking
'75/'76 - similar to previous, a bit of a "Little Feat" vibe with Ollie Brown's percussion and the slower, jazzier pace, nice solo, fun "Y'all wanna sing with us...come on ... (crowd) YOU CANT ALWAYS...." part
'81/'82 - bluesy, faster paced version, blistering guitar solos, sometimes simultaneously played with sax (E. Watts) solo, also includes a sing-a-long
I also enjoy some recent versions, which include the sped up final chorus a la LIB version.

For me is the original Studio version and of course the raw Rock and Roll Circus live debut in 1968

While I love the R&R Circus arrangement, I think my all-time fave is the '72-'73 arrangement. There's a version from the Philly Spectrum in '72 that damn-near brings me to tears every time I hear it. To me, that song needs Nicky Hopkins and Mick Taylor. And Keith actually playing his fucking guitaryou made a grown man cry

Exact same way I feel!!!!!! the studio version has the original feel to it, & on The Rock 'n 'roll Circus, a different version live, even though some people think that The Stones version was the worst! I love this performance! a down to earth version! what I can't understand is the Stones performance wasn't released because The Who performance blew The Stones away, I think The stones performance was fantastic!!!! & Bastard Allen Klein owns the rights! what a bummer.

I can't compare the live versions to the studio versions... at least not the way they used to play live, not todays let's sound like the record... My fav. ;ive version is anything 72-73 and the studio version is the shit... such a great song... probably recognizable to most people alive today...

i agree with ebmp...the brussals affair one is great.  i like the studio version one too.  they play it here on the radio all the time and i never seem to tire of it.  i like the choir and the banging drums at the end.

Are you fucking serious?
