Came via email..not sure if its a re-post....

Stones Fans,

Last spring, The Rolling Stones and Academy Award®-winner Martin Scorsese thrilled audiences around the globe with the theatrical release of Shine A Light.

This summer, they'll do it again - in your living room!

On July 29, Shine A Light, the much heralded concert film from the greatest rock band in the world, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. Featuring four bonus songs not seen in theatres, including a scorching version of "Paint It Black," a featurette with footage from the Stones' rehearsal at the Beacon, candid moments with the band and celebrity guests and even additional archival footage, Shine A Light is bigger and better than ever.

Experience the film called "one of the most thrilling films in years" by Jeffrey Lyons and "a rip-roaring concert documentary" by the New York Times, along with over 45 minutes of bonus material, with your copy of Shine A Light.

Fans can pre-order Shine A Light on Blu-ray and DVD today at The Rolling Stones store, along with Shine A Light t-shirts, key chains, the soundtrack and more. For this special occasion, our friends at the official Rolling Stones store unearthed an amazing Jeff Koons lithograph from the Licks Tour 2002/03 to give away to one lucky fan! Everyone who pre-orders Shine A Light will be eligible to win this very rare 18'' x 39'' lithograph. And did we mention that the lithograph is hand-signed by both Jeff Koons and the Rolling Stones?

But that's not all - starting July 2 and continuing through the end of the holiday weekend, the Rolling Stones store will take off 25% on all merchandise (CDs & DVDs excluded). Celebrate the Fourth by taking a fourth off your order of the latest shirts, hats, mugs, posters and more. Visit the official Rolling Stones store between July 2 and July 6 to get in on the fun.

You don't have to wait for your next order to start saving. Pre-order Shine A Light on Blu-ray or DVD as part of one of our many bundles and you save on the film and all your other Shine A Light items.

It doesn't matter how you get it. Once you have it you won't be able to turn it off.

Order now and enjoy all the action of Shine A Light this summer without ever leaving your living room.

Forget what it felt like to see Shine A Light or never seen it before? Get it today or learn more at RollingStones.com.

Cheers,

Rollingcon.com's latest coup: they offer you 25% off from all merchandise EXCEPT CD's and DVD's. How very generous...

Do you get the full blue-ray experience with a HD tv?

I have a Playstation 3 and a HD tv. I was wondering what the discs are actually like.

________________________

Hi. I just viewed your PM. Check yours for my response. I had not checked it in a long time. Sorry about that Factory Girl. I hear blu-ray is considerably better in picture and sound compared to normal DVD but I have no idea as compared to a HD-DVD. From reviews they seem to be about equal in terms of quality. You-tubers also rate them about even. HOWEVER...there are more titles (movies) available with blu-ray. Blu-ray has an advantage in the amount of things you can buy versus HD-DVD. So it appears Blu-ray is winning the battle right now. Once a big advantage occurs it is almost impossible for the other format to compete and they usually go extinct. Not that it is the case yet. Just letting you know who is winning right now. If it were me I would get a blu-ray. Someone said if you have blu-ray and DTS compatible stereo you will be taken back at how good the audio will be (as well as the picture). They said the audio is basically as good as SA-CD! They came right out and wrote that. I don't know how familiar you are with SA-CD sound but it is fantastic. Has a live feel to it and you can hear every little nuance. Three words to describe Sa-CD sound is: Live-ish (almost life-like, as if the musicians are almost right there in the room with you), Detailed, and much warmer. It is a fuller sound as well. It fills the room and your ears in a way normal CD's cannot. So if you have this quality sound coupled with a superb picture, even comparatively better than a high quality DVD it should be awesome.

HD DVD is DEAD, but quality was comparable to BRD I hear

@Honky Tonk Man - don't you even have a game with your PS3 ? Well that's what a BRD looks like, same as a DVD, goldier finish.

Better off buying a Beta video than HD. It's deader than a dead mans dick.

Blu-Ray is a bloody belter! It kills normal dvd. I got a ps3 & a 1080p lcd tv and the detail is amazing. I've got 5th element blu ray and you can see every pore. Every hair. Every ear follicle. And from what i've read, 5th element is a poor transfer!

I am Legend is stunning on blu ray. Though i still prefer the book!  Grin I dont know what the price is in America of blu ray vs normal dvd - here in Oz it's not much more - so for something as important as SAL i just gotta go BluRay.

What's nice too with the PS3 is that it eats up pretty much every 720p torrent out there after its been converted with mkv2vob, works great for the US series !

What type of sound system do you have? Also how is the sound? Is it better than DVD or the same? Is it as good as SACD as some state it is.

If it is better than regular DVD, how so? detail? clarity? separation? Stereo Image? Loudness?

Tell us please.

Of course I have a game! Grand Theft Auto!

It's just that I thought you can't get the "full experience" of blueray without the HD ready tv. Well, I have one of those and I've just bought the lead, so I'll get back to you.

I'm afraid i havent updated the sound part of it yet. I still have my Yamaha receiver and though i would like a new Sony HDMI surround thingy, i cant afford it. In fact, i am only playing stereo as since my kids were born i had to take down the rear surround speakers. I have Energy surrounds and a Yamaha subbie, which was superb but i am considering updating everything audio wise soon.

Shine a Light on DVD
Stones Paint It Black

By PHYLLIS POLLACK
© 2008 Counter Punch http://www.counterpunch.org/

Even if you have already seen Shine A Light in a theater, there is an upcoming DVD/Blu-ray package slated for release that is still worthy of buying. So you think you’ve seen the Light? Think again.

When Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert documentary Shine A Light was released on April 4, its theatrical run in both Imax and conventional theaters was limited to a select number of theaters due to its documentary format. Therefore, countless fans still have not yet seen this critically acclaimed film, documenting performances from the largest grossing concert tour of all time. However, they will finally be able to do so when Shine A Light is released on DVD/Blu-ray on July 29.

Because I had seen Shine A Light prior to its theatrical release, and had written reviews on it, in addition to the fact I had both attended and written extensively about the Rolling Stones press conference that was held in New York for the film, and I had interviewed the Rolling Stones on the red carpet (which was actually black) at the NY premiere, I wanted to go full circle, and review what is in the DVD package, aside from what is included in it that was seen in its theatrical release. Therefore, the focus here will be on the package’s added features, because I have already reviewed the theatrical release it contains.

Already having this DVD/Blu-ray package, it is apparent that its Special Features create a sequel to the theatrical release. Parts of the Featurette leave you thinking, “Don’t stop” when they end, and a few of them could segue into new films of their own.

The entirety of Shine A Light is the predominate feature included in the retail package that is slated for release by Paramount Home Entertainment.  Filmed at the shows that were held at New York’s Beacon Theatre from the Bigger Bang shows on October 29 and November 1, 2006, with direction from Scorsese, whose numerous credits include No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Kundun, The Departed, Casino, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull, several award–winning cinematographers captured the band on stage, including Robert Richardson (The Aviator), Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), Andrew Lesnie (Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship Of the Rings), John Toll (Legends Of the Fall), Ellen Kuras (Summer of Sam), Stuart Dryburgh (The Piano), and Declan Quinn (Leaving Las Vegas).

The DVD is widescreen enhanced, and features Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, plus subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The Blu-ray offers 1080p high definition, English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and English 5.1 DTS Master Audio and English, English SDH, French and Spanish Subtitles. This will mark the first time a Stones concert film has been released in High Def on Blu-ray.

In addition to the film Shine A Light, there are also four bonus songs in HD, performed in their entirety, starting with “Paint It, Black.” While the credits on the disc do not include a comma in the song’s title, I have a penchant for including one here, as its original release that topped both the British and American charts in 1966 contained one. At one point during the song’s performance, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is seen kneeling, with one knee one the stage, as he plays guitar. The way in which Richards emotes during his playing is as singular, and as expressive as Chuck Berry doing his duck walk. No one does Chuck better than Chuck, and as we have seen for over forty years, no one does Keith Richards better than Richards, whether it is when he is playing or when he is not.

The band’s rendition of Richards’ “Little T&A” is also among the full live performance bonus tracks, not seen in the theatrically released film.  “Tits and ass with soul,” “The little bitch got soul,” he sings, with an added kick that comes from a short vamp, courtesy of Stones bassist Darryl Jones. This is one of the tracks in which more footage is seen of backup singers Bernard Fowler, Lisa Fischer and Blondie Chaplin. The rest of the musicians in band are also intermittently seen throughout the added features.

The third bonus performance, “I’m Free,” witnesses Jagger dancing on stage, as the rest of the band plays. With keyboardist Chuck Leavell counting, “One, two,” the band breaks into the fourth bonus track, “Undercover Of The Night,” on which Jagger plays his Fender Telecaster.

The Supplemental Featurette section features additional newsreel footage that was not included in the theatrical version of the film. It continues to show a parade of hopelessly inept, pathetic interviews the band is subjected to doing on a constant basis. The ironies are glaringly obvious (at least to some of us), but these moments still manage to provide great entertainment due to their utter stupidity.

Here is one such exchange from 1973:

Interviewer: “There’s in England, kind of an underground talk about people that are expected to die soon.”

Richards: “I’m on the list.”

Interviewer: “You have taken the number one position on the list on there.”

Richards (irritated, barely concealing his contempt): “Great. Okay, I’ll let you know.”

Stupid questions still plague the band to this day, and it dawns on the viewer that an entire film could be made, consisting entirely of stupid questions people ask the Stones, and how they respond.

The Featurette also includes guitarist Ronnie Wood, stating that Eric Clapton had told him, “I could have had your job.” Woody notes that he responded to Clapton by saying, “But Eric, you’ve got to live with them. You’ve got to be able to live with these people.”

There is ample footage of Mick Jagger. As a result, we revisit some of his many incarnations, reflecting numerous trends and fashions from various periods of the band’s career.

Drummer Charlie Watts says he’s happier at home than on the road, and he has a discussion with Scorsese about wardrobe.

Blues legend Buddy Guy discusses his first having met the Stones at Chess Studios in Chicago, when he was recording “My Time After A While.”  Guy recalls, “I am like, ‘who is that?”  Guy goes on to explain how it came about that he began answering to the name “Motherfucker.”  This is another segue, a prefect vignette, where an entire new film could begin.

...

There is also rehearsal footage of “Wild Horses,” featuring Jagger on harp, and rehearsal footage of “Factory Girl.”

There is more of President Clinton with the Secret Service, from the October 29 show, ending his “birthday celebration,” although he was born on August 19. He describes his having been given the opportunity to hold a fundraiser there as one of his birthday presents. Reference is also made to the seating provisions for his sixty guests who will be attending the show.

In part of the DVD’s main feature, Shine A Light, Richards is seen wearing a red and silver pirate pin, a skull with crossed swords. It was a gift to him for his performance in Pirates Of the Caribbean: At World’s End. It is seen on his long black jacket as he performs “You Got The Silver.” As it turns out, in the Supplemental Featurette, there is a scene, presumably during a break of some sort, where Richards is alone on stage, engaged in his thoughts, and playing guitar. What he was playing sounded familiar. After an immediate second listen, I realized it was “Only Found Out Yesterday,” the same song Richards plays in Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End, in his role of Captain Teague.

The words from the song’s title, “Only found out yesterday,” are also lyrics heard in his heartfelt track “Thru And Thru,” from the Voodoo Lounge album. There is also part of the melody line that is reminiscent of that song, as well.

What is the connection with the line “Only Found Out Yesterday?” Well, there’s an interview question that no one has asked yet.

Phyllis Pollack lives in Los Angeles where she is a publicist and music journalist. She can be reached through her blog (http://www.electricearl.com/phyllis)

My PS3, Samsung LCD HDTV, Marantz amp and Infinit speakers await the Shine A Light DVD. And Yes, Blu Ray is better in pic and sound. It has more storage than the HD DVD.
I also found out, that Comcasts had such a weak HD signal in SF, it's like I got a new TV in Austin, the signal was so much better I practically shit myself.
Ooops, I take that back, I just shit myself, on purpose.

got a promo copy of Shine A Light in the mail today...it has the movie and bonus tracks but not the featurette that shows them rehearsing songs not played at either show and more interviews from over the years...guess they want you to buy the official DVD(I've preordered the Blu-Ray disc!)
It has incredible sounding Dolby 5.1 sound too! Grin

I wish someone would start a law suit against the bastards at Comcast for the way they compress signals and advertise it as HD.They are the mp3 of the TV industry.Fuckin cable companies can pound salt.Been with Directv since they started.

NOTHING beats DirecTV! My brother-in-law and sister have HD on Brighthouse cable down here and when he saw the picture I get on my 50 inch Sony LCD he said it was the best HD he'd ever seen...problem was that channel wasn't even in HD...when I turned on Discovery HD he shit himself on purpose! Shocked

I just noticed, Loving Cup and Satisfaction are quite a bit longer in the film than on the soundtrack. The soundtrack versions sound a lot better. Satisfaction gets very messy at the end of the movie.

damn straight. looking forward to the dts-hd master audio track, for sure...

speaking of stones brc (blu-ray content) - i cant wait for gimme shelter later this year; i hope that criterion digs up something extra to add to the title, besides superior audio and a new digital transfer, which are enough to get me to bite. anybody else, i would think there would be nothing new, but seeing how it is criterion, and this is one of the titles they are using to (finally) launch their foray into hd, i am holding out hope there might be a fresh, unseen, unheard nugget or two in package, as well (though roeg's walkabout is the only title that is announced to be getting revamped). we'll see in a few months...

I just watched it. It really is a fantastic movie. There are so many neat subtle treats in there. There was one shot where the camera circled the stage. And you can see a person hold his hand up to take a picture and you can actually hear the camera click.

Even though, I did enjoy the Shine A Light movie, I found all the supermodels in the audience distracting.  Why do they get to sit FRONT-ROW-CENTER?  Just because they're young and pretty?  That is not cool!  Not that Rolling Stone fans are old and ugly, I'm not saying that.  But, when I have gone to the concerts, all the people look normal, average, like everyday people.

For me, as a REAL FAN of the music, it would have been real cool to see someone from ROCKS.OFF or even the official Rolling Stones website.

I would be like, "Oh My God!  There's Pdog!  And, there's Denton!"  Something like that!

Plus, if they had gone for REAL FANS, instead of paid talent, the energy of the show would have been a lot better.  And, the movie would have done a lot better at the theaters.

My humble opinion only.

For a doco on a 40year+ band, i think SAL did very well at the cinemas. How could you say it would do better if the models were not in the crowd? That's kind of silly, man.

As for Gimme Shelter, unless there is something like 50 minutes of extra stuff, i cant be bothered getting it in blu-ray. The Criterion dvd is fine with me.

“Undercover of the Night” (5 minutes)

“Paint it Black” (5 minutes)

“Little T&A” (4 minutes)

“I’m Free” (4 minutes)

How long before a region2/pal version is released?

Not sure if this would actually be region encoded. As for NTSC/PAL, thats a hard one too. Over here, our tv's/dvd's/VHS have long been dual ntsc/pal/secam. But i am not too sure if the ps3 plays all formats. Knowing SONY, it might not.

Best Buy is selling SAL DVD under the radar for $13.99, that's a BLOW OUT.  Blu-Ray is $29.99.

Is Blu-Ray superior to dvd format?

I picked up mine yesterday and watched it last night. It's very cool. The special features have four additional songs, Paint It Black, Undercover, I'm Free, & Little T&A. There is also an additional like 15 minute snippet of footage that was not shown in theaters which is really cool.

The acoustic rehearsals sound really sincere and genuine. I think it would be really awesome if in the next tour they would have a segment of 4 or 5 songs where they all just sit on stools and play and sing with each other. That would be an awesome b-stage segment.
