  Hitler Statue Decapitated at Berlin Madame Tussauds (Update1)

July 5 (Bloomberg) -- A man ripped the head off a wax sculpture of Adolf Hitler on the opening day of the Madame Tussauds museum in Berlin, police said.

The 41-year-old man pushed aside a guard and an employee who tried to stop him from attacking the likeness of the Nazi dictator shortly after 10 a.m., Berlin police said in a statement. The man was taken into custody and was due to be released later today, police spokesman Uwe Kozelnik said in a phone interview.

The employee suffered a ``slight'' leg injury in the incident, according to the police statement. The man who lives in Berlin's Kreuzberg neighborhood will face charges related to damaging property and injuring a person. The headless statue was removed from display after the attack.

The new museum, located on Berlin's Unter den Linden, not far from the Brandenburg Gate, opened to the public for the first time today. The statue of the Nazi ruler has sparked criticism with some commentators calling it ``tasteless.''

Madame Tussauds said before the museum opened that it would be leaving a gap in German history if Hitler weren't included in an exhibition showing personalities including actress Marlene Dietrich, Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

``There wasn't a compromise,'' Natalie Ruoss, a spokeswoman for the exhibition told N-TV in an interview before the opening. Madame Tussauds ``wanted to show the entire German history.''

Restrictions

The Hitler statue is placed behind a red cordon and has a sign asking visitors to refrain from taking photographs or posing alongside the figure, out of respect for the millions who died in World War II. According to museum policy, a member of staff is on location to ensure they don't.

Merlin Entertainments Group, Europe's largest operator of visitor attractions, owns Madame Tussauds. Merlin itself is owned by Blackstone Group LP, the world's biggest leveraged buyout firm. Madame Tussauds couldn't be reached for comment.

I have sympathy for the guy - the only thing that went bad is - an  employee suffered a "slight'' leg injury
...and hey, the guy got up early on a saturday morning, cued for an hour and was the 2nd to enter the museum and yes, he did pay to get in.

also, he lives in my neighbourhood 
he shouted " No more war, ever again."

a comment of an elderly woman: "Finally someone succeeded to assasin Hitler."

It's not about erasing Hitler from history  - (my estimate) 95 % of the todays germans  know and despise what was wrong.

I'm pretty sure it was not about getting some sort of satisfaction out of that action, but the disgusting passiveness... like ; if no one said anything  adainst it.

The hitler figure and scene was roped off and it is prohibited to take photos......

haha - were you oficially allowed to take pics of the Stones?...

Quite right, also. If it's really a protest against war, then he should have ripped off Bush's and Blair's heads instead, that would have had a little more "present" impact. If I remember correctly, that war ended, and he lost anyway.

well i take your point regarding the banality of evil Jizz but i would stand by the assertion that hitler certainly was from the margins of german society at the time and i would say there is plenty of evidence to support the idea of him having the loner mentality.. but i accept that  yes perhaps the werido epithet was gratuitous to some degree

Hitler was a failed artist and full of self hate. He was either gay or asexual, regardless he had issues there. He failed at everything in his life, until some jumbled hard to follow ramblings called "Mein Kampf" caught on among other losers and became a movemnt to take over a great country suffering from failed leadership.
Hitler was a loser who got lucky, but not in the Tom Petty sense.
One fight that continues is the fight between fascists and communists. It just wears a new face and has new names and justifcations.

stalin made Hitler look like a Wanna Be Dictator, when Stalin ran out of Jews to kill, he just killed his own people. If it wasn't for those two assholes, Europe would've been great in the 40's.

Who was more evil? I always kinda thought Stalin was... I've met many Pollocks, who hated the Nazis,but have hatred so deep for Russia and the USSR you would think they wished The Germans had won, and i'm not even being sarcastic. I'm going by the words of only a few old enough to have been there Pols, but nonetheless, you can feel it when someone breaks it down to you.
We got it really good in North America!!!
