Rap, rock, classical _ music to Obama's ears
By ANN SANNER – 10 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod.

"I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.

Growing up in the '70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tops his favorites from the band.

The Illinois senator's playlist contains these musicians, along with about 30 songs from Dylan and the singer's "Blood on the Tracks" album. Jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are also in the mix.

"Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is 'Maggie's Farm,'" Obama said of one of Dylan's tracks. "It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."

In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them."

Several musicians on Obama's iPod support his bid for the White House, including Bruce Springsteen. Earlier this month, Dylan told a British newspaper that he believes Obama is redefining politics in the United States and could deliver change to a nation in upheaval.

"I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable," Obama said. "Those guys are icons."

Obama said he hasn't met Springsteen, but the two have talked over the phone.

"Not only do I love Bruce's music, but I just love him as a person," Obama said. "He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."

And did he address him as the Boss?

"You've got to," the candidate said.

Asked what he thought of rap, Obama said the genre has broken down barriers within the music world, though he's concerned about his daughters — Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7 — listening to it.

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

He said hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were "great talents and great businessmen."

"It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves," he added.

Obama appears on the cover of the magazine, which endorsed him for president in March.

Presidential playlist: Obama opens up his iPodAngela Balakrishnan guardian.co.uk, Wednesday June 25, 2008 Article history

The Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama showcased his diverse musical taste, ranging from Bob Dylan to Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen, after revealing the playlist on his iPod.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, to be published this Friday, the Illinois senator said he had "pretty eclectic tastes".

The list of bands reads like the acts at a summer music festival, with the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow and Ludacris all in the mix.

Obama said that, growing up, he listened to Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire but that Stevie Wonder was his ultimate musical hero during the 70s.

The Stones' track Gimme Shelter topped his favourite songs from the band.

His selection also contained 30 songs from Dylan. "One of my favourites [for] the political season is [Dylan's] Maggie's Farm. It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."

In the song, Dylan sings about trying to be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them".

The jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker were also included in the compilation.

Many of the musicians on Obama's iPod, such as Bruce Springsteen, are supporting his White House bid.

Earlier this month, Dylan said he believed Obama was redefining politics in the US and could bring change to a nation in upheaval.

"I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable," Obama said. "Those guys are icons."

Obama said he had not met Springsteen but that the two had talked over the phone.

"Not only do I love Bruce's music, I just love him as a person," Obama said. "He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."

He added that, when speaking to the singer, he addressed him by his moniker the Boss. "You've got to," Obama said.

The candidate said he thought rap music was also helping to break down barriers within the music world. Indeed it was reported last month that Obama will make a cameo performance on the rap singer Q-Tip's next album.

However, he expressed concern over his daughters – Malia, nine, and Sasha, seven – listening to some rap songs.

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

He said the hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and the rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were "great talents and great businessmen".

"It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying they were getting bad images of themselves," he added.

Obama appears on the cover of the Rolling Stone issue. The magazine endorsed him for president in March.

Blue, why can't people see this guy as the oh-so-obvious fraud that he is?!?! The bastard liar first says that he will accept public financing of his campaign. Then he reverses course and says he will bow out of public financing. Why? Well he says it's because he wants to avoid the "broken system of public financing"! How fucking stupid does he think the American people are?:! Only a complete idiot could miss what he is really trying to do!

He does not want to accept public financing because it would put a cap on what his naked blind ambition could spend on his quest to become POTUS! With public financing comes an 80 million dollar cap on what he can spend. He will raise more than that and he knows it. So, he lies about taking the "high road" and tries, by implication, to turn the issue on it's head be claiming that evil Republicans, and their nasty 527s will lie about him and distort facts! ROTFLMAO!!!! Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!

To date George Soros and his radical 527 groups, Obama supporters all, have out spent Republicans 10 to 1!!!

Obama is a god damned lying fraud, and anyone that would consider voting for him is an idiot. It's really that simple.

This is beyond partisanship for me. The man is gaming the whole country and nobody seems to be willing to admit or acknowledge it.

Obama's plan for the energy crisis? So far all he has proposed are taxes!!! That's his plan-tax everything! He wants a Capitol Gains Tax on Oil Companies. He wants a Win/Fall Profit Tax on Oil Companies. He wants to enforce Cap and Trade on Oil Companies. Who the fuck do you think are gonna pay those taxes?! It sure as hell won't be the oil companies! Oh, and he also wants no new drilling. No new refining. No new nuclear power plants. No new clean-coal plants. No growth at all.

Great plan, huh?!

The guys a fraud, and you're a know nothing moron if you support him. Fucking read a little people!!!!! The guys a god damned committed Marxist!! That's not hyperbole either! That's a strait up fact.

Riff, I still get NEWSWEEK & it's awful to read it. The NY Times has more fair & balanced coverage than NEWSWEEK. But the DBM at large is in the tank for O'Bama & nothing he says or does that's dishonest/bordering on criminal will dissuade them from promoting the fraud. He's a Chicago pol; what else do we need to know?

True dat, blue. The thing that is so god damned funny about the whole thing is that I have yet to meet one single person that can tell me what Obama endorses that they like. Not one person! They can't even tell me what he does endorse! The sole reason that they like Obama? He's not Bush. That's it. That's the whole story. The idiocy is stunning in it's shortsightedness.

Obama told a group of admiring Jews (why Jews would ever consider voting for this man is just one of life's mysteries) that he believed in a non-divided Israeli held Jerusalem. Three weeks later, while addressing a group of Arab Americans, he said the exact opposite thing! He made a complete 180!!! Did you read about that in the papers? Did you hear about that on CNNMSNBCPBSCBSABC????!!!!!

Hell no! Obama is their mastabatory black messiah!!

The media has absolutely no problem in blantently lying and covering for this fraud. I'm just shocked that people are so god damned stupid that they wouldn't do just a minuscule amount of research about him. I firmly believe that if the American people knew the whole truth about this Marxist that he wouldn't garner even 30% of the vote. But, alas, many liberals are brain dead drones who just happily march towards the slaughterhouse without a care in the world. The problem with that is that we are all going to have to suffer the consequences of their shortsighted stubbornness.

Bucky I can honestly say that I have a very hard time sitting back and enjoying the ride when I know more about Barrack Obama than over 90% of his supporters do! The man is scary with a capital S-C-A-R-Y. What he wants to do to my country is frightening, and the media happily steers simple minded liberals, and uneducated drones away from any of his inconsistencies and blatant lies. It's journalistic malpractice out in the open, and nobody seems to want to confront it. I will because I love my country, and can't I stand what this charlatan is trying to do to it.

See ya in the rice fields! Yay Obama!!
